Live Blogging Nationwide Series From MIS (ABC - 3PM ET)
Marty Reid is once again off in IndyCar land. So, it will be Allen Bestwick calling today's Nationwide Series race from MIS with Rusty Wallace and Andy Petree alongside.
Nicole Briscoe steps into the Infield Pit Studio with Ricky Craven and Wallace. Dale Jarrett and Brad Daugherty are off this weekend. Down on pit road are Mike Massaro, Shannon Spake, Dr. Jerry Punch and Dave Burns. Tim Brewer will be in the Infield Tech Center.
This is one of those weekends when NASCAR gets a nice exposure for the Nationwide Series on ABC. While there are other sports in progress, there is no NBA, NFL and the NHL season is now over. Great opportunity for some quality exposure.
Nationwide Series regular Justin Allgaier is the in-race reporter and ESPN has a solid number of in-car cameras for this event. MIS is often a fuel mileage race and it takes some consistent work from the guys in the TV truck to keep it interesting for viewers.

ReplyDeleteYAY Allen in the booth no cringing for 2 1/2 hours today <3. Although I did cringe when Rusty asked if the tracker was broken when Paulie was making his run :( thought that was rude & inconsiderate. He wouldn't like it if someone said that if Steve was on a pole winning run.
Good to see Paulie & Sammy on the front row today hope they both do well :).

ReplyDeleteCan't watch the race, but did they address the Gibbs cars that were found with illegal parts? Wonder how long this "cheating" has been going on? All three Cup cars were found with the unapproved, and heavier part.
ReplyDeleteActually, the JGR cars has perfectly legal oil pans.
ReplyDeleteWhat they did was jack up the weight and take it out of the car elsewhere.
The only thing JGR was guilty of was not submitting the new oil pan for approval prior to the race.
Had they done that, there would not have been a peep said about it.
Someone made a little mistake.
It would truly be a nice race for us viewers if ESPN turned off Rusty's mic! Looks like a nice day I sure hope a regular NW driver wins.

Once the field spread out, the tight shots began.

Ron, the key is that the violation begins when the car is on the track.
ReplyDeletePrevious items removed from cars prior to going on the track have resulted in fines.
NASCAR told reporters at the track that the oil pans were legal. Right size and specs, just different material so they weighed more.
Still waiting to see what happens on Tuesday, but right now it looks like cash only.

ReplyDeleteanyway, in re: JGR oil pans issue. i'm not in agreement that the only "illegal" issue revolved around not getting them approved & that there was nothing wrong with the weight or machining of the oil pans, per se.
nascar's ruling ONLY dealt with the failure to get approval because the cars never made it to the track. there appears to be a very large "what if they'd gone on the track for practice?" question that is very carefully remaining unanswered -- unless you've seen something from nascar which specifically states differently?
nascar was extremely careful to NOT say anything about whether the actual pans would have been legal or illegal. they repeatedly stated that they were only looking at the failure to get approval issue (although initial comments from nascar indicated that the pans had been machined to have bottoms that would sit flat against the chassis cross bracing. this might have represented an aero advantage over the normally rounded bottom pans.)
it may, in fact, be accurate to say the pans were legal in and of themselves but i haven't read anything that has gone that far.
and, as always, our buddy dr diandra posted a great column on the science of it all on her Building Speed site!
so, sorry to hit and run on this but i'll check back in (late!) tonight and see if i can find other information. perhaps a race show covered it in detail, which i wouldn't have seen or known about today or yesterday. so, i concede i may be way off base here.

ReplyDeletePretty easy to understand. They changed the weight by using another substance to build the pans.
ReplyDeleteThis shifted weight at a track where balance is key. I think it was pretty smart.
If someone was supposed to submit it for approval, that is going to be one thing. If JGR was trying to get it by inspectors and run it in the race, that is going to be another.
I have a feeling the NASCAR popo are on it right now.

Jerry, and during Q's Rusty kept on stating all the cars are in the 50's this is really something (screaming it at us)! Then no one was but he never talked about the faster cars and under 50!

ReplyDeleteJD,it's courageous of you to stay objective on the JGR oil pan issue. You should see the posts on other web sites that ran with the earlier speculation on Jayski where the pans were 20-30 pounds heavier. Technically, that would be pretty hard to do if you have any experience with cast aluminum.The Waltrip cars got busted a while back for these humungous radiator pans that weighed a ton. AB is a big improvement. I could do without Crusty and Nicole. A long, wide track like Michegan suits the Network TV broadscasts. The Fords are just playing right now.

ReplyDeleteWith the tight rules on the new COT cars, weight shifting has been a theme.
ReplyDeleteJust think if JGR had gotten the pans approved during the week. Probably would have gotten an advantage for a week or so till others caught on.
I really view this as creative, but minor.
Seems to me - if you wanted to be a little sneaky, take the loaded-bat approach.
ReplyDeleteGet hold of a stock looking pan, pour thin layer of lead in bottom. Could probably add a decent amount of weight.
Heck, could even weld in a bulkhead over top w/really thin aluminum if it's constructed from plate.
No idea what might happen if caught, but that never stopped anyone.

ReplyDeleteNASCAR put them in such a tight box that there is little else to do then deal with components that bolt on.
Lots of dollars spent on using all kinds of compounds to create different engine components.
Use to be the chase to be lighter, now it's the chase to move weight around.
Hope NASCAR limits the cup drivers next year, this is darn near unbearable, then add Rusty ugh.
ReplyDeleteI'll be the first to admit that I'm an old fart because I think that some of the post-race gimmicks are a little lame. Everyone tries to outdo the other. First we had Castroneves and Smoke climbing fences. The Carl's backflips, Brad's American flag tour and now communing with the fans in the Grandstands. Having raced a little myself, I always marvel how the #18 just never gives up. I can see where that would frustrate the other drivers. I'm sure Menard thought he had him. I'll bet Harvick thought Menard had him too!

ReplyDeleteI didnt either, but not by choice. Mother nature kept that from happening, on my birthday even! Dish pooped out on lap 20 and Internet wouldnt load justin.tv or an MRN stream so that wasn't too much fun. TV came back late in the race but severe weather warnings covered the lap ticker so I didnt know what lap it was till the final lap. Ive called my local affiliate (WLOS Asheville) and complained but they refuse to move it. I did get to see the post race and Im quite pleased with how that went. From the 30 or so laps of racing I saw it was much better than any broadcast all year. AB gels really well in the booth and even made Rusty tolerable. Nice job by the ESPN boys.
JD I just got back on and in response to your re. A team is in violation when presenting a car for inspection before going onto the track. In the past if a part wasn't approved by Nascar they were subject to a fine and or loss of points.
