Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series From Kansas (FOX - 12:30PM)
It certainly is going to be fun to watch NASCAR on FOX today. Chris Myers has to walk Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Hammond through the Richard Childress and Kyle Busch mess from Saturday before he can move to today's race preview.
As veteran fans know, FOX always has an interesting perspective on this race which is the final event for the network in 2011. It's often more melancholy than upbeat, especially for Waltrip who has actually teared-up in the past on the air.
Waltrip will continue on SPEED's RaceDay covering for Kyle Petty this summer while Hammond will work for RaceHub and SPEED's at track coverage of practice and qualifying. Myers will continue to host Inside NASCAR on Showtime for the rest of the season.
Mike Joy will call the race and other than some Barrett-Jackson auctions he steps aside after this event. Larry McReynolds moves on to TNT as the strategy guy working from the infield.
Steve Byrnes and Krista Voda continue working for SPEED, while Matt Yocum moves to TNT for the summer. Only Dick Berggren ends his TV run after today. Berggren is having a tough season and this break is coming at a good time for him.
FOX has dumped Pizzi, moved the pre-race out to the fans and got into Twitter and social media. On the flip side, they continue to use tight shots and in-car cameras to show random groups of cars instead of stepping-up and showing the actual racing on the track. The finish line struggles have also continued.
Big networks make plans well in advance of how to televise major sports. FOX carried out the plan this season and has changed nothing since Daytona. While ratings have crept up due to the better racing storylines, the network is now going to step aside and watch TNT and ESPN take on the challenge of finishing the season.

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 250 of 250in a nutshell, here's what makes me turn off the race:
i turn back to the race, get the replay of the 20 making minor contact w/the 88 and then . . . booth starts talking about youtube video of reaction to last week's race finish. crap that could -- nay! SHOULD -- have been part of pre-race IF it was deemed to be important or interesting. it was neither.
all under green flag.
is there really nothing else to show or talk about on the track?
Just watched the You Tube video that Mike Joy was referring to.. Quite funny.. Highlight of this race really.
This is tough to watch today. I can't tell if what they're showing us is live or if it's a replay of something that occurred a couple of laps ago. Very very tough.
For those Bobby Labonte and Mark Martin fans - how is your driver doing.
Wow...the most informative section of the race just came from an extended segment from the Hollywood Hotel.
I. Am. Stunned.
What about Regan Smith?
I think they mentioned BLab when he got the Lucky Dog. A long time ago.
OMG! Why does it feel like I'm watching a four hour GIGANTIC commercial or infomercial, full of product add placements. Does every camera and every update need an official sponsor? All the while I think there is a race going on. Does anyone know if TRUE GRIT going to be available on blue-ray or DVD? WOW!
Say it with me.....GAS MILEAGE!
I'll ask it again. Who has the honor of anchoring the 6 p.m. SportsCenter tonight?
So, what's the difference between 'riding shotgun' with a driver or using the in car camera that Fox is addicted to?
Sally.
It had a sponser!
huh. just realized that somehow, at some point, i started following nascar on fox on twitter.
took care of THAT mistake!
If I were asked how to make this broadcast worse I am not sure I could come up with anything.
What Fox is doing right now is pretty hard to beat.
@tespo...
(smacking myself on the forehead) Of course! How did I miss that?
How could the fox broadcast be worst? It could be ESPN
Charlie...
I've got two easy ways to make this broadcast worse.
1. More Digger.
2. Trade Mike Joy for Marty Reid.
XD
Christ, Darrel, as if we don't have enough cautions of dubious origin already!
Heres an idea: lets bulldoze the turns here at kansas. Then burn the fox production truck and the hollywood hotel, and use the ashes as fill dirt and add some banking to this place. Win for everyone...well except Fox.
Ok heres a more realistic idea: run this race at night next year. Makes no sense to run this thing in 95 degree heat. This race has been a total bore. And the coverage is espn kind of bad.
It is an interesting point, if it becomes gas mileage, would nascar throw a caution for a water bottle again?
p.s. the espn guys making fun of not knowing how much gas, mentioned telemetry, nascar doesn't allow it like indy
@KoHoSo hahahaha so true!
Darlington in midsummer heat is one thing. The track is a huge challenge even withoutthe heat. KC is another animal entirely.
Nail biting race. Can't you feel the excitement with just 30 some laps to go.
@bozo,
ESPN just likes proving how little they know about stock car racing.
Repeat - In-car cams and tight shots do Not show the race.
Using in-car cams and tight shots does not give this race any flow to it.
Still laughing. Mike Joy said "38 more nail-biting laps to go!" heading into the last break.
Here we go with side-by-side!
One big question to ask -
Does Fox know where the start/finish line is.
At least they are cutting in the box this week. Thanks for a bone.
@charlie,
Only for one car...the winner. after that they get lost on the pit box and celebrating crews.
Does Fox know where the start/finish line is.
LOL!!!
15 Laps to go.
I gotta say, I like that LeTart and Jr are willing to take the chance on making it on fuel. Going for the win instead of playing it safe.
where's the radio chatter from the 2 and 88 car.. sure would add a little here
Fuel mileage. Yech.
Wouldn't it be nice for the camera to show the #2 and #88 in the same shot to get some perspective on the gap?
Here we are again. How slow can you go?
And Jr. didn't run out of gas! Not bad for starting in 28th. Nice for Kez, a Michigan boy!
and once again, we don't see the finish!
Fox caps of their season with a poorly done finish.
But we have replay.
Kind of a bittersweet way to close it out for the FOX guys.
If you are heading out, the TV Police post is up with our old pal Joe Mannix!
I'm happy for Kez...glad to see another good finish for Junior...sad that Fox thinks this is an appropriate way to telecast a car race.
That finish was messy. No shot of the line as the others finished, or any sort of graphics to show how they crossed the line.
I guess the new way NASCAR racing is going to win over fans is to see who can get the best fuel mileage. Maybe it will renew interest in the soap box derby or watching grass grow.
BORING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
jr always seems more out of breath than almost any driver...
Hey Fox - What happened to the graphics at the finish?
Good race
Men crying on TV. Here we go!
Is the Fox camera director ready to retire?
Interesting race in that Junior continues to improve and the fuel mileage issue was in play again. Don't really care for the mile and a half tracks for the most part. The cars get too spread out too quickly.
Nice to see Brad get a win and nice to see Kurt run well.
Glad it's Fox's last race. LOL
Going to move your comments up to the TV Police post.
Thanks for hanging with us for the FOX portion of the season.
TNT is next! See you then!
