Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series From Daytona (TNT - 6:30PM ET)
It's the biggest night of the year for the NASCAR on TNT bunch. This is the "Wide Open" coverage that allows the commercials to be run in a video box while the live racing is still on the TV screen.
The trade-off is that the sponsors get extended commercial elements and lots more signage on the screen. Some folks love it and some folks hate it. Either way, the racing is rarely interrupted and it makes for a very different telecast.
Lindsay Czarniak has confirmed that once the TNT package is over she is off to ESPN to be a SportsCenter anchor. Good luck to her, she is a very professional and hard-working journalist/reporter. She hosts the pre-race show at 6:30PM.
Kyle Petty and Larry McReynolds are alongside. It should be very interesting to hear their opinions on the tandem racing we will see tonight due to the current car rules and the new track surface.
Once things get underway, it will be Adam Alexander with Petty and Wally Dallenbach Jr. in the TV booth. Ralph Sheheen, Marty Snider, Matt Yocum and Chris Neville will handle the pit road duties. It should be rough for these guys since almost all the green flag pitstops will be tandems.
RaceBuddy is once again free and open at NASCAR.com with ten video sources. The pictures should be great from the track after dark. RaceBuddy has been a wonderful addition to the live races on TV this season. If ESPN chooses to pass on this technology, it may be a rough Chase once again this season.
TNT told me the goal again this year is not to miss a lap of green flag racing. It seems this is the only network and this is the only race where we hear that sentence. Let's hope a smooth race and good coverage can serve to motivate others to move in this direction.
This post will serve to host your comments on the NASCAR on TNT presentation of the Sprint Cup Series race from Daytona. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. Thanks for taking the time to stop by!
Hi folks, here we go! No rain at Daytona and maybe some good racing.
ReplyDeleteHope we have a good, fun race.
ReplyDeleteIt sure feels like Sunday to me.
Let see some fantastic racing tonight. I expect RPM to get its first win from AJ tonight.
ReplyDeleteNo rain, no Waltrips, and no Wallaces. What more could one ask for?
ReplyDeleteThat's the combo platter? Got it.
ReplyDeleteeven tho' we're running "wide open" tonight, i suspect i'll stay on RaceBuddy for most of the race. i like the options it presents, the various cameras and the fact that it's not interrupted by commercials of any sort once i log on.
ReplyDeletebesides, with just 1 tv working right now, i can watch the race in its entirety while the family watches something else, if they'd like!
looking forward to tonight, altho' i seriously dislike tandem racing in a very big way.
Happy Race Night Planeteers <3
ReplyDeletePray for safe good racing!
I watched the pre-race show for the first time in nearly three years yesterday. I won't be doing so today unless I catch Pride of NASCAR at a right time.
ReplyDeleteFirst race with my laptop. Looking forward to all of the "social media" that will be available during the race.
ReplyDeleteToday, I watched a few minutes of Race Day before reaching my tolerance level. After watching the NNS race last night, I'm expecting a bunch of unnecessary wrecks followed by an insane finish. But no one knows. Last night, the pundits were hyperventilating over "The Four Horsemen" from KHI. They all wrecked including Bowyer going through two cars. To put a period on last night, Race Day, this afternoon, played a perplexing interview with Danica talking about her wreck. She said that "Mike Wallace was like fish out of water going high and then low..." Huh? Mike Wallace is widely respected as a great Super Speedway driver. Hardly a fish out of water! Tonight is an impound race so qualifying didn't mean much as some drivers concentrated on race setups while some leaned toward qualifying setups. The Planeteers always come through with a wide range of insights. I'm looking forward to it!
ReplyDeleteNot many fans there for such a big time race.
ReplyDeleteI'm not yet sure what all I will be using to watch the race tonight. I just want to pop in now to wish everybody a happy and safe Independence Day and, as always, to thank Mr. Daly for providing us this forum for our views.
ReplyDeleteCharlie, I have a relative who runs a beverage stand there for charity.
ReplyDeleteShe was told to order half of what she normally sells.
Mixed reviews on this tandem racing stuff.
Hoping everyone has a great race!
ReplyDeleteWishing all the Planeteers a safe and fun 4th!
As always, thanks to JD.
Lets all hope for a safe race and no flips like DW's 20 years ago in the 400.
ReplyDeleteThe weather is supposedly much less oppressive (83* now) tonight which should have resulted in more "walk-ups". I, too, wish to thank JD for all he does. Stay safe Planeteers!
ReplyDeleteWALLY'S WORLD-replica there with Kyle and Wally. I enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteLiked the piece TNT just did with Kyle & Wally drafting on the track.
ReplyDeleteWhy not show what the driver in the 2nd car sees in that last segment.
ReplyDeleteI thought they were going to show us.
I just happened to sit down and watch that segment of Wally and Kyle out on the track. Very enjoyable. Stuff like that might get me back to watching full pre-race shows again.
ReplyDeleteanon 6:49...in another interview, Danica sounded like she was talking about his *car* not him. I'm a fan of Mike, but it did not look like it was handling well. She probably didn't phrase it right, but I think that's what she meant.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching the first tandem "race" at the track, I would not spend my money on attending the second "race" of the year at this track. It's like the automotive version of Russian roulette. You make your move and take your chances.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the Wally and Kyle segment on the prerace show.
ReplyDeleteStill find it weird this kind of racing, but TNT did a good pre-race show as usual.
ReplyDeleteThis pre-race show was definitely interesting. Of course if we had the Kellys still that would top it :)
ReplyDeleteJD - I'm trying Race Buddy for first time. How come I keep seeing the Coke commercial over and over?
ReplyDelete8 bars in and it's already a great anthem. nothing beats brass.
ReplyDeleteAngela, Coke is the sponsor and why it is free.
ReplyDeleteThey commercial plays when you change from the mosaic or the in-cars.
The team scanners and the program audio will begin online shortly.
TNT audio on the mosaic channels, team scanners on the in-cars.
No complaining about that version of the National Anthem!
ReplyDeleteAnthem + Flyover = Chills
ReplyDeleteThanks JD - so excited with my choices tonight. TV/Twitter/RaceBuddy :)
ReplyDeletehey jd,where is the 360 cam on racebuddy at?
ReplyDeleteI guess Wally & Kyle made themselves relevant this time. Doesn't make them experts, but then, neither are the current drivers. I enjoyed watching them try it out, and using Larry as the crew chief was kinda funny.
ReplyDeleteThat really rocked. Nice start.
ReplyDeletethat Medal of Honor segment still wasn't very organized looking. I think last year they messed it up somehow. It's a great thing to do, it just didn't look right. What's so hard about calling their names & having them step forward or something. They could even do it before the anthem.
ReplyDeleteAnon, scroll down on the RaceBuddy homepage. It is in the lower left hand corner.
ReplyDeleteIf you are on an iPad, you will not see it.
Were those cars TNT's?
ReplyDeleteNo, two back-up team cars. Can't switch now for the race!
ReplyDeleteLike 45 actual minutes? :| - 45 minutes wasted if you ask me.
ReplyDeleteUsing RaceBuddy I see they have a camera in Tony's car that will show what he sees as the driver. A camera close to driver eye level. Cool.
ReplyDeleteAnd the 48th Annual Firecracker 400 is green :)
ReplyDeletehave all my cameras on RaceBuddy but no leaderboard, tracker. don't want to reboot right now.
ReplyDeleteOnly you red! It might need a refresh to start the telemetry.
ReplyDeletethanks, jd. will reboot now while we're under yellow.
ReplyDeleteSomeone at TNT needs to learnto cue the booth. Everytime they comeback from a break every week you can hear the booth talking.
ReplyDeletegeez...five minutes & my guy is done. But if it was the old style, 10 or 15 cars'd be wrecked.
ReplyDeleteok, a reboot did the trick. thanks for letting me know it was just my laptop, jd!
ReplyDeleteAnon - That happens in every sport. And as I said last week, I enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteAnd thank you Bad Brad! Regards, TBayne!
ReplyDeleteanon 8:00--it's been that way since TNT started. No idea why. Maybe they think that's cool.
ReplyDeleteWell, not off to a good start. The start was weird with all the attempts at "pairing". It'll be interesting to hear what Trevor Bayne says. Why the #2 would be on him so hard so early is strange. The last replay doesn't look good for Brad. Looks like he just turned right to go up to the wall.
ReplyDeletePlease forgive me universe, LET WALLY & KYLE speak more than the screaming Adama Alexander...and I shall enjoy THIS race.
ReplyDeleteSorry to see the 21 of Bayne wrecked.
Miss Ralph S in the booth. Hell I miss Bill W in the booth compared to the current chemistry...sigh.
But looking good on the tv so far after seeing the Reds lose again.
Adult beverages handy & making 3 ways for dinner (Chili folks. also 4 & 5 ways :) )
Detest this tandem racing but LOVE Daytona. hopw they can get rid of this two step racing next time!
Team orders? Jeff Gordon is told not to win? What happened to racing?
ReplyDeleteI have yet to watch a love=bug race on TV including this one, but if I were home I would be on Racebuddy because what came over the scanners last night especially among the cup guys was a different kind of chatter than I had hears before in these races. You could hear them askinq questions of each other, sharing impressions, etc., and figuring out potential tatical moves.
ReplyDeleteOf course they may not do it tonight, but it really made me believe they have all been working hard on love-bug racing and are close to figuring it out.
Double secret team orders!
ReplyDeletebite your tongue, Sophia...Bill? Ouch! So far I thought Adam was okay tonight. Not great, but okay. But I have some kinda adjustable sound thing on my TV, the 'yelling' isn't very strong for me. Also--you know, sometimes I think, the guy's only done about 9 races. On the job training. He could improve. Maybe. Hopefully... :)
ReplyDelete24 told not to win and to push the 5 no matter what.
ReplyDeleteTeam orders? REALLY?
Seriously people! How much absurdity must we put up with before we decide to tell the sanctioning body where to shove it?
@Glen
ReplyDeleteLarry Mac just said the 22 works better with the 78 than with the 2 Now the 2 is getting lapped! Regards, Karma
Thought I'd try Race Buddy tonight and I'm glad I did, it made me appreciate DirecTv's Hot Pass. Better video and audio without the delay.
ReplyDeleteTook about 3 laps for me to close Race Buddy and switch back to Hot Pass.
Decent coverage, but this racing is just stupid. I'm out.
ReplyDeleteThose pit stops were awful!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteOn which lap will Carl make his way up to the broadcast booth?
ReplyDeleteThis race may settle down, but its surprising that we've had some strange wrecks so early when most are just 'riding'.
ReplyDeletedon't know how the spotters do it. i can barely breathe, listening to this in-car from the 88 & 48. it took the yellow for me to realize i was actually holding my breath.
ReplyDeleteRPM - I'm boycotting RaceBuddy from personal use until their comments section is removed or massively censored. The behavior is despicable.
ReplyDeleteRoadgeek Adam: from the first week, i minimize my RaceBuddy window so i don't even see the comments. my RaceBuddy window ends on the right side of the window.
ReplyDeleteyou're right: they're ignorant and obnoxious and, unfortunately, typical of what happens on most race sites during the race.
That bottom bar is to big and to busy for me.
ReplyDeleteI don't work in advertising, but if I did, I'd be on the phone with the Turner executives wanting in on this for next year.
ReplyDeleteCharlie, i use that to watch the leaderboard for lap times but i have also shrunk the entire raceBuddy window so all i have is the window with the action and the left side camera options. clean and streamlined
ReplyDeleteI love karma...lol. But it didn't last...
ReplyDeleteWould someone tell Petty that there's a race going on while he's BS'ing about texting. This is getting ridiculous. Now they've dragged Larry Mac into it.
ReplyDeleteI am loving this broadcast! I am even watching the commercials. Thank you, Thank you TNT!!! Where are you nascar? If this was how the broadcasts were every week, you would be having a lot less problems. It is your call. MC
ReplyDeleteMaybe next time team cars could have a paint scheme that when they are in tandem it is like looking at a bill board.
ReplyDeleteThe Hendrick cars dropped to near the back of the field intentionally. If they go to the front near the end of the race and one of them wins, the next restrictor plate race will have most of the field running to the rear of the field. It would be egg on the face of NASCAR and further the drop in race attendance and viewership.
ReplyDeletePetty has to get organized. I'm not sure Cassill's sponsor is thrilled by Petty's comments.
ReplyDeleteIs anyone else having trouble hearing Kyle Petty et al? We can barely understand them, the track noise is so loud.
ReplyDeleteUgh...my 16 is dancing w/2. I am confused. LOL!
ReplyDeleteCharlie...that would work if they didn't have to keep switching places. Maybe we should just chain the pairs of cars together like a gimmick race at a local short track.
ReplyDeleteDefinately making the announcers talk over the car noise.
ReplyDeleteThey did a nice job covering Edward's problem, but sacrificed covering Blaney's wreck.
ReplyDeleteOsborneK...cars been doing that for like 5 or 6 years. Roush was one of the first. Didn't change a thing.
ReplyDeleteIf you FULL screen RB with your battle cam or whatever, you can no longer see the insipid/ignorant comment section the rt. I do think they should OUTLAW the comments section UNLESS WE WANT THEM. Too many haters/trolls.
ReplyDeleteIf Carl E is vomiting from fumes he should be YANKED by car imo. That's just crazy..not worth it to get poisoning :(
anon, they are texting. Bootie talked about it on NASCAR Performance. It's just one aspect of this racing.
ReplyDeleteI wonder why I am watching the "race" at this point. The drivers are just making laps that are meaningless until the last 10 or fewer. Someone could make money if they had an app that would notify us when there were 10 laps to go.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's me, but I don't feel connected to this race. The focus is clearly on the top 10. You have to try to see the position tracker long enough to get a sense where the other drivers are. The three guys in the booth are doing just terrible in my opinion.

A race to the back. It used to be racing to the front...........
Why would 99 not run with a cool box?
ReplyDeleteSo the COT still has carbon monoxide issues....How is this possible??????
ReplyDeletewhy are there suddenly so many full screen commercials..did I miss something???
TNT runs the full-screen commercials in the caution periods.
ReplyDeleteThe idea is to save the side by sides for the green flag breaks.
Working pretty well tonight.
I don't know what the purpose of Inside Trax is. A scanner with video?
ReplyDeleteI agree. Petty/Wally surprised me by recognizing Cassill. Then Petty goes off for five minutes dumping on Landon's sponsor! Unbelievable. Wally and Kyle need to tone it down. Far too much talk.
ReplyDeleteDUH! Thanks JD. multi tasking, tweeting, RB & wondering why Carl E is driving so ill...not a fan of Carl but do not want him to be 'under the influence' of fumes either :(
ReplyDeleteLOVE KYLE & WALLY!
Busch, they are trying to do the NMG behind the scenes thing during the race. Makes no sense.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like TNT is apologizing for the cars riding in the back.
ReplyDeleteI respectfully disagree regarding Kyle Petty's sponsor comments other than he didn't need to repeat the same point so many times. I agree with him that a driver being forced to miss practice in order to make some kind of appearance is disgraceful. Are drivers drivers or are they salesmen?
ReplyDeleteAgain, JMO. No anger intended toward anybody.
Falling to the rear of the pack to miss "The Big One" isn't something new. The racing starts with about 20 to go.
ReplyDeleteI sent them a note in the last break saying "What about the cars in the back just riding?"
ReplyDeleteYou got to tell the whole story.
switched to SD TNT on 52 in tv & HD TNT..Either way is better than Indy Car side by side or N full screen~ I remember watching watching this on SD tv this was still a heckuva lot better than Fx & BSPN!! My house mat eis letting me enjoy this on hit LR TV (GRATEFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
ReplyDeleteTNT tries to give us more love cam wise but the commercial load is tough & the changes in the booth in last 2 yrs. But tonight, it's all good.
Thank you TNT.
p.s. NASCAR, you really need to change your tv priorities..not that you care one whit WHAT I think....
xoxoTNT
KoHoSo - I agree with Petty's point, but it really isn't his place to judge sponsors. Cassill drove hard to get his sponsor attention for Petty to slam them.
ReplyDeleteWas so looking forward to this race on our new gigantic HD screen. But it's not what I expected - I guess it's the 2 x 2 racing that's just not making it work for me.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I was just going to comment that Wally was all wrong about Joey Logano falling off from the #18. When they start to overheat, they swap positions. I think rather then do that, Logano would just drop back to get clean air. Looks like they agreed to let the #18 lead. Not good guys.
ReplyDeleteBuschseries61...I understand your point as well and I don't completely disagree. However, I must admit that it's darn refreshing to hear some critical commentary instead of the usual NASCAR brown-nosing.
ReplyDeleteIt just does not seem that Adam fits in well with them this season.
ReplyDeleteLast year was new, but this year it seems like Adam is not in on the jokes and not up to speed.
Kind of weird.
Can't hear the jokes or anything much at all. Guess I'm not missing anything.
ReplyDeleteJD...I think AA's probation period with many Planeteers is over especially when we remember how good Ralph was when he took over.
ReplyDeleteHere is the difference. AA has been in the studio this year working on SPEED Center.
ReplyDeleteHe is never at the races and has no NASCAR field work this year before TNT.
That is a big switch.
Jr is tired of laying back. "C'mon Jimmy, let's roll!"
ReplyDeleteI love HotPass.
Hey everyone Happy 4th of July weekend!!! Cant say im a big fan of this kind of racing but let me say one thing Race Buddy is such a pleasure to have its amazing it makes this race exciting and the broadcast is much much better than last nights ESPN Nationwide race
ReplyDeleteI love the 88 In car its awsome hearing him talk with JJ love this we need this full time with every Sprint Cup Race!!! With the NBA and NFL lockout Nascar should jump on it
ReplyDeleteAdam's lubrication comments are spreading laughs around the internet.
ReplyDeleteI think the lap positions are meaningless. I think most of these guys are just riding right now.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Practice at Dega is more interesting than this.
ReplyDeleteJimmy: Jr, we're surrounded by a bunch of guys I don't like. Let's get the **** out of here!
ReplyDeleteJr: OK man, let me make a hole!
I like this "lovebug" racing for the radio conversation between drivers if nothing else.
Did Vickers only take 2 tires?
ReplyDeleteWish they would spend a segment on the guys in the back on camera. Not just talk about them.
ReplyDeleteWhy? The guys in back tonite get plenty of coverage every week. If they want coverage get up front.
ReplyDeleteNot a lot to cover, but TNT has done a good job so far.
ReplyDeleteDW on Twitter suggesting a caution flag.
ReplyDeleteI've got a suggestion for DW but the rules of this blog prevent me from posting it. ;-)
ReplyDeleteHalf of my RaceBuddy is down. Wah.
ReplyDeleteOnly get Mosaic #2.
Race Buddy down here as well DOH
ReplyDeleteThis is when the caution happens
ReplyDeleteJD
ReplyDeleteDidn't you say Mike Wells went to Indycar? If so, who is producing TNT?
Lots more useless, extended bumper car than I've every seen.
Stil scads better than FOX or ESPN!!!!
Just curious...if you posted this, I missed it, sorry.
They made a great observation with that bumper cam shot & stuck with it for a while. The other networks just use it randomly for 5 seconds and switch shots.
ReplyDeleteI like how Nascar is letting this play out no cautions its about time!!!
ReplyDeleteUmmm...missing something on what was happening with the 43?
ReplyDeleteThe 43 crew had a botched takeoff and the pit reporter didn't even comment.
ReplyDeleteI noticed Vickers took 2 tires (Neville reported 4) the last wave of green flag stops when everyone else took 4. Seems like many other teams are using that strategy now.
ReplyDeleteJr telling Jimmie to take the corners lower so he can stay to the right or he'll spin Jimmie.
ReplyDelete15 Laps to go.
ReplyDeleteGet the caution flag ready? Maybe with ten to go?
ReplyDeleteI miss Elliot Sadler in Cup.
ReplyDeleteOh look! They decided to race!
ReplyDeleteWhat a save!
ReplyDeleteWOW! What a recovery by Jeff Gordon!
ReplyDeleteFastest caution flag in NASCAR history!
ReplyDeleteYocum should report why the #48 pitted instead of the booth guessing.
ReplyDeleteTime for some "fun" GWCs?
ReplyDeleteUggh, they go to local commercial right when Jr wants to talk strategy.
ReplyDeleteLooks like Hot Pass has it's drawbacks afterall.
jr is just mashing the gas doesn't care who is where..3 laps to go..ain't waiting
ReplyDeleteNot sure what that caution flag was for..
ReplyDeleteEven for the conspiracy theorists.. that was shaping up to be a great finish. No need.
Jimmy Johnson story was ignored completely
ReplyDeleteThis is soooooo freakin stupid. They ride around for 150 laps and wreck each other when they try to race.
ReplyDeletePoor follow-up on stories all night...a stark contrast from the first race on TNT this season when they did so well.
ReplyDeleteJoey Lugnuts is not making friends and with all due respect to Mark Martin, it's time to hang up the helmet.
ReplyDeleteCan't stand this two car teams. NASCAR thinks this is racing that true fans want to see? Get real.
been busy & multi tasking off the net all night...sorry to read reviews that TNT is not covering the stories like they used, too.
ReplyDeleteSTILL the better camera work helps me but to WHOM do i thank the tnt camera work?
No mo Mike Wells, correct??????????/
DETEST GWC...sigh
first said 2 laps to go now 3 laps?WTHH?
So now because of a caution flag that never needed to be thrown, now half the field is wrecked.
ReplyDeleteCase, totally agree.
ReplyDeleteanon 10:22...not Joey's fault, or Mark's fault, just a product of this racing. Cars checking up on restart, nothing new.
ReplyDeleteAlso, what makes you think NASCAR wants this? They just haven't figured out how to make them not do it.
Anonymous 10:22...in all fairness, it's not like we didn't have big wrecks with the last setup. However, looking at this love-bug style of racing overall, I could not agree with you more.
ReplyDeleteKP's description of having to get a new date for the last dance is apt. Not the kind of racing that breeds new fans. Or holds the old ones.
ReplyDeleteYo guys, how's about you do some more reporting? You had the big one and no word on who was actually involved, who's out, ect.
ReplyDeleteWhy the *&&%$& is this caution lasting so long?????
ReplyDeleteTypical NASCAR "manipulation"
disappointing :(
I'm sorry, but I think that Kyle and Wally were just terrible tonight. They seem to get worse with each race. I predicted that the end would be insane. Thats not a big surprise in that regard. I'll be glad to move on to the next race.
ReplyDeletejr worried about right front going down
ReplyDeleteNascar CAN do things to change e drugging, but they choose not to. They've known the COT sucks, but they just keep plugging away with it. Nascar changes things all the time, except for things that would make the racing better.
ReplyDeleteLooks like Johnson pitted to get hooked up with Gordon, and it worked.
ReplyDeleteAn absolute joke.
ReplyDeleteThe only two storylines of this race: David Ragan was shoved across the line first and carbon monoxide is bad.
ReplyDeleteUgly finish.....but nice to see a different winner!
ReplyDeleteI am so done w these multiple GWCs. too many restarts fakes the ending....sigh.
ReplyDeleteGoing to be some angry drivers and some interesting words after this one.
ReplyDeleteLet's see how TNT handles it.
What a mockery. I hope I can somebody see a real race at Daytona again in my lifetime.
ReplyDeleteI called this after Regan Smith won the Southern 500. These crown jewel events, pardoning the World 600 have produced first time winners. I got my 3rd of the 5 crown jewel events.
ReplyDeletecan I ask why my last comment wasn't published? I commented on the lack of reporting on the big one? did I do something wrong?
ReplyDeleteI thought the booth gave little to no information on the last lap and the race results. they just said "It's great Racing!".
ReplyDeleteAnonymous 10:41...it's up there...sometimes Blogger is slow.
ReplyDeletesee it now, sorry JD!!
ReplyDeleteComments are open right now, no moderation at all. Say it again.
ReplyDeleteMust be a tech issue.
They gave a lot of interviews, but they were quite rushed. Running off the air 10 minutes too.
ReplyDeleteI'm happy with the ending, it seems no one else is.
ReplyDeleteTNT did a rather good job tonight, given what they had to work with.
ReplyDeleteHowever, this is horrid racing. I'll not waste my time for the next restrictor-plate race.
why the big delay for online starting..because they quit off the air so early? Plus it screwed up anyone with a dvr doing it 10 minutes early
ReplyDeleteNo, they just have to patch the TV stuff into the online stuff.
ReplyDeleteIt's on now.
The TV Police post is up. Please leave us your comments on the TNT coverage today.
ReplyDelete
