Live Blogging Camping World Trucks in Talladega (SPEED - 3:30PM ET)
It's the preview to the big show on a track that was never meant for the truck series, but here we go again. SPEED is at Talladega for a Saturday afternoon drafting contest.
Krista Voda hosts the Set-up at 3:30PM ET to get things started. Ray Dunlap and Hermie Sadler are her reporters. Rick Allen, Phil Parsons and Michael Waltrip will come along at 4PM for the live race.
This is a tough track for trucks. A lot of these teams are not big dollar and time in the wind tunnel and all the slick aero tricks are left for just a handful of trucks. Sometimes, it makes for a boring runaway of a race, but sometimes circumstances work out and keep things exciting.
SPEED always puts on a good TV show and this race should be a good one. The camera angles at Talladega, when worked correctly, make it exciting. After the tragedy of last weekend, one hope is for a safe race. Trucks on this track have always been a bit of an odd fit.
This post will serve to host your comments on the coverage of the truck race. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. Thanks for taking the time to stop by!
Hi all.
ReplyDeleteHope it's a good, exciting, safe race today!
ReplyDeleteHello John.
ReplyDeleteI would take safe.
ReplyDeleteOughta be interesting ...only a handful of drivers have experience on a superspeedway ...lot of inexperience may leave just a few running at the end ...at least they won't have many laps to create the 'big one'
ReplyDeleteHello and thanks for having us!
ReplyDeleteI would like to mention that Direct TV in my area (central ohio) says that they may drop Speed and Fox cable channels on November 1st. Hoping they get that worked out! I have Direct TV and love it. I love the Speed coverage too!
Be talking about that this week.
ReplyDeleteGreat! Look forward to hearing what you have to say!
ReplyDeleteGot to fess up. On a road trip, not quite there yet. Gonna catch first part of race online. Don't tell!
ReplyDeleteJD, you'll get the 'on line viewing experience' first hand!
ReplyDeleteIf my EVO doesn't explode!
ReplyDeleteScott, the big one always happens. Hell we had 2 of them in Daytona :P
ReplyDeleteThings to see today:
ReplyDeleteJohanna Long starts 8th. Chris Fontaine 14th.
I am hoping Fontaine gets a win today. He's shown his niche for these tracks. (OF course getting help by Kyle Busch tends to do so.)
I can't believe this silly troll doesn't get tired of himself! SO repetitive.
ReplyDeleteHey everyone! I like this race think this is going to be the race of the weekend, not a big fan of the 2 car crap
ReplyDeleteget a life kid!
ReplyDeleteYou know, the closing rate of the pack when the Siamese trucks/cars switch really can be scary.
ReplyDeleteLove the nice WIDE shots.
ReplyDeletecaution
ReplyDeleteJosh Richards is way in over his head. Dude wrecks in every race hes been in. I know he has talent, just needs to quit trying to be Kyle and just log laps.
ReplyDeleteI don't remember Josh wrecking in his last attempt.
ReplyDeleteAdam he is the Hornish of this series.
ReplyDeleteHe's new, versus Hornish who had 3 years to fix that problem.
ReplyDeleteKyle Busch on Trackside tomorrow...do hey have some sort of deal with toyota to make sure he os in front of the camera every week?
ReplyDeletelook at that beautiful camera work and areal shot!!! ESPN this is how you do it!
ReplyDeleteScore! Huge widescreen HDTV in the hotel!
ReplyDeleteNice looking pictures today!
aerial* lol sorry bout the 2 post JD
ReplyDeleteHow is Johanna Long doing so far?
ReplyDeleteI sure hope the truck series survives. between the great racing action, and Speed's ability to show a race so you stay interested, it would be terrible to lose the best races in Nascar these days.
ReplyDelete10th average.
ReplyDeleteBest FLYOVER I've ever seen. IMPRESSIVE.
ReplyDeleteWish the cameras would do a better job of this. FABULOUS & on the tv screen for a very long time..what 30 seconds?
Thanks SPEED!
Sally, everyone and their brother is worried about tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteIt could me a total mess. Not from crashing, but from the team tandem junk.
Time will tell if Josh can get a handle on it. Like I said he has talent, just doesnt know what to do with it. Lots of torn up trucks from him this year
ReplyDeleteTheres going to be a big wreck today because of the tandem deal. Once we get past halfway I think pack racing as we know it will cease to exist. And they'll probably wreck more than half the field when they all start tandeming. Yes I just invented a word.
I've heard that the track managers at Daytona and Talladega have noticed that 'fan ratings' (accoring to the Nascar fan council?) of the plate races have gone down steadily since the Siamese Twin racing happened. I would assume they aren't pleased, now that the novelty has worn off.
ReplyDeleteAwesome camera work today with the nice wide shots of Dega!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy this folks, because tomorrow, it's back to INTRUSIVE & Jumping in car/bumper cams via ESPN.
Oh, it's awful. Might have to get it out of the Chase if this one tomorrow stinks or if cheaters make it a big mess.
ReplyDeleteJD what did you think of Denny Hamlin's comments on how to fix this 2 car racing? He said they should make the holes in the restrictor plate bigger It sounded like a good ideal
ReplyDeleteoh and dont forget everyone we have racebuddy for the truck race! always a BIG +
ReplyDeleteDear ESPN Truck person.
ReplyDeleteWatch TODAY'S Truck race on SPEED.
This is what we should see from our TVs! This is actually enjoyable to VIEW. Not aggravating. Take notes please. Love, Soph
The MDA commercial is 100 times louder than the others.
ReplyDeleteSauter and Crafton wreck. ThorSport can't be happy.
ReplyDeleteDAMN that hurts Sauter!
ReplyDeleteNeed a replay
ReplyDeleteFrom Bob Pockrass on the twitter:
ReplyDelete"Sauter told that Neuenberger blew a tire in front of Crafton, Crafton lifted and Sauter, doing the pushing, didn't know."
Correction. We need a BETTER replay.
ReplyDeleteYet another danger of twin racing and sight restrictions on the new cars.
ReplyDeleteThis caution is taking forever...
ReplyDeleteMike Wallace and Ron Hornaday...old age and treachery come to the fore!
ReplyDeleteI just hope that this tandem "racing??" isn't an indication of what we can expect tomorrow. This isn't racing. Just one person's opinion
ReplyDeleteBIG DEAL for Speed to use a tweet to give info on something they missed! YES!
ReplyDeleteGee, didnt see that coming. Surprised it was only a 2 truck incident.
ReplyDeleteLimited in-car cam shots
ReplyDeleteWhich is good
Nice wide shots
Which is good
Hope Espn can do the same tomorrow. ha ha
@anon at 5:16 The tandem racing is exactly what we will see tomorow. Pack racing wont exist. Just 20 some odd tandems. The rules changes had no effect.
ReplyDeletePlease quit explaining tandem racing every five seconds, we get it.
ReplyDeleteTodd Bodine wrecks where did I put my shocked face?
That was just too weird! No good explanation for that, could have been HUGE!
ReplyDeleteSomeone needs to warn the 33 of Wallace you shouldn't be backing off coming to the restart. Potential to cause disaster.
ReplyDelete"Biggy" Bigelow was doing an online poll, wondering how people watch the races...since, when he watches by himself, he has had a hard time staying awake thru an entire race. Sounds like a familiar problem!
ReplyDeleteStill good pics, even almost missing the Sauter replay.
ReplyDeleteIt's been a rough Chase. I thought this might be the breakthrough, but not yet. Need some better stories!
ReplyDeleteI don't have a good feeling about these final laps.
ReplyDeleteJD, it amuses me when I hear some pundit calling for an 'elimination' format for the crapshoot. Since 3 teams are basically out of it, isn't that what's happening already? Guess they think we need yet another gimmick!
ReplyDeleteJust asking...has Mikey shut up for more than 15 seconds yet this race? I know he's talked over the radio traffic several times.
ReplyDeleteSally, tennis and golf both tried this whole fake playoff deal to counter the NFL. Not working.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts exactly, JD.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a decent crowd for the trucks!
ReplyDeleteWhen I hear someone won the Chase I don't consider it the same as someone that won before the Chase.
ReplyDeleteI don't care about the Chase winner.
Preaching to the choir, Charlie!
ReplyDeleteMikey : His horrible very worst ..
ReplyDeleteIf If he had a normal voice...
he would almost be ok ..but not
a chance.
The disaster is that the suits
think he is a " good person to be
the voice of nascar ""
Think about that..
on second thought dont I will
pray Amen.
This might be the ONE time I agree with that poster! Zip it Mikey!
ReplyDeletelistening to the radio myself...
ReplyDeleteMikey is over-talking everyone.
ReplyDeleteChase haters! BOOOO lol I like the Chase its exciting! The other format is good as well but it is what it is and wont change, but if you cant accept a Chase Championship winnder as a real Champion then you shouldnt be watching this Sport "just my opinion
ReplyDeleteThis dual stuff is awful on TV.
ReplyDeleteYou know, the thought of 2 waltrips in the booth next year is truly frightening. I may end up using the ear plugs I never used when I went to Bristol!
ReplyDeleteSally, one in the booth and one in the Hollywood Hotel yelling at the guy in the booth!
ReplyDeleteJonathan-you're entitled to your opinion of course, but don't tell me I'm not a fan because I think the chase crowns a fake champion. And most fans that I know also hate it.
ReplyDeleteAny bets on whether Kyle stays behind Austin past the finish line?
ReplyDeleteJon, everyone has an opinion on that topic. Lots of views on this big change!
ReplyDeleteThis is getting annoying. We need more tandems if we want a race. Better yet, can we wreck the 18 and the 2? That might even these teams up.
ReplyDelete15 laps to go.
ReplyDeleteAustin Dillon is doing well with this ridiculous racing. so far, so good.
ReplyDeleteim sorry there is NOTHING fake about winning 5 championships in a row in Nascar! Thats amazing, jaw dropping, unheard of! Pamm not sure who your favorite driver is but if he wins or has won in this format would you consider him a champion that year?
ReplyDeleteJon, take it easy my friend. Most of us have been around a long time. The Chase changed the entire sport and made it very different for veteran fans.
ReplyDeleteEveryone has an opinion, you are certainly entitled to yours.
Sorry,k Jon, but winning a 10 race set up after manipulating the points just doesn't have the same cachet for me. Now, if Jj had managed to win even ONE that he had to carry the entire season....
ReplyDeletek sorry my bad I got carried away for a sec Sorry Pamm
ReplyDeletelets enjoy the rest of this race
ReplyDeleteHoo boy! Going to get interesting now!
ReplyDeleteit'd ok Jon-it's a hot button topic. friends..:)
ReplyDelete@#?! Not who I wanted to see bring out the caution...
ReplyDeleteHeck of a save my Mike Wallace! That could have been a disaster!
ReplyDeletefriends! =>
ReplyDeleteMan, I still have people ripping Trackside today in email!
ReplyDeleteHope they keep working on that show.
here we go!!! WOOoooo
ReplyDeleteMikey slow down a bit. You are just one of three people in the booth.
ReplyDeleteI wish Michael Waltrip would just shut up!
ReplyDeleteIt took them that long to notice the 3 did that?
ReplyDeleteThis is just not racing.
ReplyDeleteIt's because of situations like this that caution laps shouldn't count in the last 5 or 10 laps.
ReplyDeleteI think the first AND second place cars should both get the trophy, since it takes 2 to make it.
ReplyDeleteGreat for Mike Wallace! Couldn't happen to a nicer guy!
ReplyDeleteNice win for a great guy
ReplyDeleteWhat a sad excuse for a race.
ReplyDeleteAnd Mike Wallace was just subbing today to.
ReplyDeleteI HATE this racing but soooo happy for Mike Wallace!
ReplyDeleteGod Waltrip sounds like a cartoon character!
ReplyDeleteOld age and treachery beats youth and enthusiasm! Great to see the
ReplyDelete'old guard' win one!
Great to see Mike back in victory lane, wish that racing we saw at the end though had happened earlier (White/Bodine and Carmichael/Buescher).
ReplyDeleteCongrats to Mike Wallace. Someone needs to muzzle Waltrip in the booth...he's almost as bad as Crusty. Love the new smart phone interface, JD. Very nice!
ReplyDeleteIt would be so wonderful if tomorrow Espn did the same kind of camera work that we say today.
ReplyDeleteThe combined ages for P1 & P2: 105. The combined ages for P3 & P4: 52.
ReplyDeleteNow that's taking the kids to school
Mike is a good guy. Mikey was over the top. Combo-racing is awful!
ReplyDeleteLet's try this again tomorrow!
Thanks everyone.
JD
I was out at a party and used the DVR to record the race.
ReplyDeleteI'm thrilled for Mike Wallace, but this type of racing is terrible.
SPEED made a choice to give the 2 car drafting teams primary attention and the pack secondary attention. It resulted in bad replays for the #13, #16, #88 crash and the #84 crash. When Timothy Peters ran out of gas at the line, Rick Allen sounded like he couldn't give a s***, the front was more important. Nevermind Peters was in 5th in the standings, within 30 points of the leaders.
It seemed like every ten laps the booth explained how the team drafting worked. It led to Michael Waltrip becoming so long winded that he would forget his original point. As trucks were four wide, Rick Allen had to wait for Michael to shut up before calling the racing.
If Michael brings this same garbage over to FOX, that intolerable mess will advance to a new level of terrible on the dial. Enough is enough Michael!
Well our driver suffered an engine problem, but never ever heard anything from the booth. Very disappointing but then again, he wasn't in the top 5 or a cup guy!
