Daytona 500 Live 7PM FOX: Chatting On Twitter
Live race chat is once again on Twitter.com using the #TDP1 hashtag. You can easily sign-up and participate. It's free and easy to use, please join us.
5PM update: Conditions still go for 7PM racing, one last rain band moving toward area. Hoping it misses track.
Update 12:50PM: RaceHub on SPEED at 6PM will serve as the Daytona 500 pre-race show. Full updates from the NASCAR on FOX team at the track as well as SPEED analysts in-house.
Update 12:30PM: FOX PR spokesman Dan Bell has confirmed that every local FOX affilate nationwide will carry the Daytona 500 live. That is huge, especially for West Coast viewers on a Monday at 4PM local time.
Update 10:15AM: NASCAR has announced that due to continuing rain, the Daytona 500 will be run at 7PM ET Monday and televised live on the FOX Broadcast Network. It was raining in Daytona at 9AM with jet dryers shut down and the track wet. Forecast is for daytime rain with clearing after 3PM. Will update track drying efforts and potential for 7PM start on this page. Thanks for your patience.
It was a valiant effort, but no amount of positive spin from the NASCAR on FOX gang could defeat Mother Nature. From the opening weather forecast that predicted possible light rain but no problems getting the race in to the subsequent five hours of rain fill, the Daytona 500 was not to be.
Here is the reset information for fans about Monday's TV and radio coverage:
FOX is scheduled to come on the air at noon ET and if the track is ready the green flag will be dropped by WWE star John Cena only minutes later. There is no pre-race show on either FOX or SPEED. There is also no flyover.
RaceBuddy or any type of video streaming is not done with the NASCAR on FOX race package. The network pays top dollar to have viewers watch FOX and that buys them what is called "exclusivity." As far as video is concerned in the US, it's FOX or nothing.
As of midnight Sunday, SPEED stated that network has no plans to re-air the race Monday night if it is completed on Monday afternoon. An email to FOX went unanswered, but it is highly unlikely that the Monday primetime line-up would be set aside for a replay of the Daytona 500 on the FOX Broadcast Network.
Basically, this means set the DVR, VCR or whatever recording device you may have available for all day Monday from noon until you get home from work. Right now, the only scheduled re-air is later in the week at noon on SPEED. Why these two sister networks could not agree on this issue as of Sunday night is anyone's guess.
For our friends in Canada, TSN2 will have coverage should the race get underway at noon. UK fans the word is Premier Sports will carry the race live when it happens on Monday. For those of you down under SPEED Australia will carry it live.
On the radio side, click here for a direct link to the Motor Racing Network (MRN) homepage. In an agreement reached only a short while ago, MRN can now stream races online through the MRN website in addition to using the normal radio affiliates nationwide. On Monday, there will be direct links for fans to use either the website page or the MRN mobile page to stream the race.
For those with android phones who want to use an app, click here for the I Heart Radio homepage. This provides feeds of local radio stations nationwide and there are several MRN affiliates on the list. You can scroll down on that page for a list of apps easily installed on your phone.
iPhone users it has been recommended that the TuneIn Radio app, click here for the link, is easily installed and is free. That will allow access to the same MRN affiliates for coverage of the race. The list of MRN stations is right on the MRN homepage.
As always, the SiriusXM NASCAR channel will carry the race live. SiriusXM has a live stream, but it is not allowed to carry any NASCAR content. To hear the Daytona 500 on SiriusXM, you must listen using your auto or mobile receiver.
After the race, SPEED will offer RaceHub at 6PM anchored by Danielle Trotta. She will have multiple reporters updating the stories from Daytona. ESPN will be using SportsCenter and ESPNEWS for post-race content.
We will once again be running a live stream on Twitter for TV comments on the coverage. Enter the #TDP1 hashtag into the Twitter search box to see all the comments in our stream display in real time. Please join us, Twitter is free and loaded with information.
Once the race is over, there will be a new post up right here for your post-race comments on the NASCAR on FOX coverage. Please take a moment to stop by and give us your wrap-up of the telecast. Thanks again for hanging in there, let's hope we have Monday racing at Daytona.
UnFortunately directv has not updated the guide so you can not set the dvr unless you record every little show starting at noon.
ReplyDeleteIf NASCAR wants to be a big player in the world of sports, then they need to quit worrying about stupid things like the Oscars. They have lights, run the race under them. Quit whing about going up against other events on other channels, they never did when Bill Jr. ran the sport. Hell, he welcomed challenges like that!
ReplyDeleteOr an even better idea, and the same can go for the Super Bowl: Run the events on Saturday night. Better ratings, and employers wouldn't have to worry about whether their staff is going to show up on time or at all....
JD, that's a great job of covering a variety of formats and international options! Unfortunately, I suspect you're going to have to do it all again tomorrow. I've set the DVR, but I'll listen to the MRN stream so they can tell me when to set it again Tuesday.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
The weather forecast indicates we might get the race in tonight. As a student, I hope it's postponed to noon tomorrow, because my schedule today is very full and I'd only get to watch any of the race if the start was delayed at least six hours.
ReplyDeleteWe never had any postponements when the 500 was run a week earlier...just sayin'...
Joie Chitwood himself admitted the race probably won't start before 5 or 6 PM with the forecast as gloomy as it is...which would put the finish right around Monday-night primetime!

ReplyDelete@Bill Hicks: Directv has a manual record option. I think even if they update their guide you would still get the race with that option. Not sure though. If you record separate shows and they update their guide, you will lose the recording. At least that has happened to me in the past.
For those with Directv I just saw Directv has updated the Hotpass guide. Might also be a way to insure getting the race. They show the FOX feed in one box, driver in other.
Not sure why Directv can't get their act together and just update guide. Although with rain delay may be a moot point.
They do have an app on iPhone (not sure about others) so you can set recording away from TV. It allows you to record exactly as if you were home in front of TV.

ReplyDeleteSitting in our motorhome outside of Turn 1. It is raining and some people packing up and leaving. Feel bad for them.
However, I think this race happens. Around 3PM chance of rain goes to 30% with some sun peaking out of the thunderstorm pic! Same as Friday night for Truck Race which turned out to be a beautiful night to watch a race. 6PM no rain with more sunshine that clouds.
As much as we don't want to sit around all day, would be better if race started at 6 so more had opportunity to watch.
Keeping fingers crossed.
We are blessed that we can stay and have motorhome to hang out in.
Sorry for all, but especially first timers. Happened to me for my first Indy 500. Never saw one lap. First time that had happened. Working at time and flew in, so had to leave. So disappointed.
Didnt think about the oscars being a reason for not showing it last night. They can't do tonight how is John cena gonna wave the flag and wrestle at same time?
ReplyDeleteDaytona 500 was never rained out before Danica Patrick .... Just saying :)
If your guide isn't updated, set it to DVR whatever is on at noon. then adjust the record end time to extend it. Mine lets me go 3 hours longer than scheduled time. So, I set up 3 shows and have 9+ hours of recording. Should be over by then, but I might add 3 more just to be safe.
ReplyDeleteJ.R.
I'm a little surprised FOX agreed to preempt House for a NASCAR race. But that's good for me. I chose to come to work today. Now I can get home, eat supper and watch the race on TV, while listening to it on XM.
ReplyDeleteI applaud NASCAR for making this decision to push the start time from noon back to 7 PM EST. The quick, decisive announcement gives some ease to us fans that have to work on Monday and want to see the race but do not have any recording options. Also it takes a great deal of potential waiting and uncertainty off the table.
ReplyDeleteAs for House vs. NASCAR: The decision is simple, NASCAR is a much bigger animal and brings much more advertising revenue which if I remember correctly, FOX didn't go too deep into their commercial stock.
If there was ever a win-win-win with the Daytona 500 getting rain delayed, this was it.
It's been an annoying and frustrating road but I am good with this outcome provided it runs on schedule tonight.
Monday night primetime Daytona 500 has the potential to be a gamechanger for our sport. This is a very big deal for us. This is exciting!
ReplyDeleteI agree about the primetime start time. As stated before, if they would run the Super Bowl of Racing during primetime under the lights, sit back and watch the ratings soar..... Please NASCAR, give some consideration to Saturday night under the lights! This habit of running ANY race during the week during the day has to stop. It's almost as if they just mail it in at that point...
ReplyDeleteGarry,
ReplyDeleteThere is more that goes into that then just making a knee-jerk decision. Namely, the race after this is Phoenix. If, by some chance, the race washes out today and runs tomorrow it will have to be as early as possible. The teams have to travel back to Charlotte and then head to Phoenix so that the cars arrive by Thursday night.
When you have to pack up and head down the road, the sooner the race is over, the better.
I disagree with having Daytona has a primetime race all the time because we did that for a few years and the ratings really did not improve by doing it. Also, as a traditionalist I enjoy Daytona having the 1pm start.
Had they not declared this race would have run at noon today and said it would run at 7, and we get a clear morning but rainy night, NASCAR would have looked like fools. I applaud their decision again to remain flexible with the situation.
This could indeed be big for the sport but lets see it first then discuss a future change.
JD
ReplyDeleteWhat is ironic is that last Sunday, not yesterday, the weather was absolutely gorgeous. The Daytona 500 should have a set race weekend. Realize TV is an issue but it would be a lot better leverage for fans than what is happening at this moment.
The race day for the Daytona 500 should always be between February 14-20th from now on.
I agree Loosewheel, but have to add that NASCAR doesn't need any help looking like fools, they're pretty good at that by themselves. I was merely stating that if they chose a Saturday night (like the Shootout), it would make it seem more epic... I also know about the tear down and packing and moving on to the next race (my brother worked for NASCAR teams for 13 years). Would just like to see NASCAR do something that suits the sport and the hardcore fan, and stop worrying about the "casual" fan. There is no such thing as a "casual" fan in NASCAR. Thanks for the valuable information, though. It's great to have a forum where fans can interact with each other. Thanks JD!
ReplyDeletein 2013...Imagine: when there is no NFL on Monday nights...select tracks have their Cup races on Monday nights. They even have heat races, instead of boring qualifying. They even have Kelly Pickler or similar do the intro: "Are you ready for some racin?"
ReplyDeleteGarry,
ReplyDeleteTo play Devil's Advocate: A Nationwide/Daytona 500 doubleheader on Saturday?
And I agree, the "casual fan" nonsense boils my blood.
ReplyDeleteActually, there are casual fans. I don't think NASCAR needs to go out of their way to try and attract them, mind you, but you can't say they don't exist. Last Monday I guy I work with came by my office and said, 'how about that racing the other night, that guy whose car went tumbling'....he didn't know who Jeff Gordon was, he just talked to me because he knew I was a race fan. I've had this sort of thing happen before. Now, I have no idea how he came upon watching the Shootout, but somehow he did. Quite honestly, I was a casual fan myself until 1997. I would watch the 500 and a few other races during the year but I really didn't know much about it. I just don't believe that lowering the level of a broadcast or changing the way NASCAR schedules things is the right way to attract them. If they like it, they'll come back.
ReplyDeletesaltsburgtrojanfan, you do realize that it could just as easily rain on that weekend, right? NASCAR did not want to go up against a possible rescheduled Superbowl (had the lockout not been solved). I can't blame them there, it's practically a national holiday. The Oscars, on the other hand; I'd have had no problem with runnning against that. NASCAR hasn't said if they plan to go back to normal next year, the teams had disliked that extra weekend off so early.
ReplyDeleteAs for the Saturday nights....it's been said over and over, but here it goes again. I've been told by people who attend regularly that having Saturday night NASCAR just kills business at the local tracks. I don't know why they don't just schedule around them, but for whatever reasons they can't or it's not practical. Now, this early in the year means many series are not running yet, but later it becomes more of an issue. This is the first time in history a 500 has been moved; I don't think we need to overreact.
I believe anyone with a DVR or Satellite system may want to be prepared for tonight's event and input the recording manually... I've not know some 'systems' to update properly and hence, I don't depend on the automated features in tough times like this! (when the D500 is postponed...)
ReplyDeleteThis will either be very positive, with the first Daytona 500 in prime time with lots of new viewers. Or this will be very negative, with millions of viewers pissed off NASCAR has preempted their shows. Fun experiment!
ReplyDeleteAnyone else happy that the Daytona rain coverage was almost as popular on TV overnight ratings as the NBA All-star game?
ReplyDeleteNBA 5.4 NASCAR on Fox 4.5 (without the actual event) pretty dam sweet.
I expect the invocation and the anthem to take place before FOX goes on the air. What do you think?
ReplyDeleteRachel,
ReplyDeleteSince SPEED is live at 6PM for one hour, we might see both on the Race Hub show that is being used as the pre-race.
JD
I agree this could be good for ratings. I just hope the Waltrip clowns don't embarrass themselves. Wishful thinking?
ReplyDeleteYou're right, but then again I expect the prerace festivities to be preempted by commercials during Speed TV's airing of NASCAR RaceHub. We shall see.
ReplyDeleteI think I told this story before, but years ago when they had that delayed Rockingham race, our local Fox affiliate refused to show it. Glad they got everybody on board this time (well, not showing their usual primetime lineup would take care of that...) Our affiliate's reason? They wouldn't be allowed to show their local logo in the corner of the screen. As if we were too stupid to know which channel we had on. So it was Ricki Lake intead. Seriously. But you guys are right, it will be really interesting to see how it does affect ratings. CBS sitcoms, The Bachelor, The Voice, some college hoops and a hockey game.
ReplyDeleteIf it comes to any benefit, I don't have DVR, and for whatever reason an empty schedule this week on campus after 10:50. Only day that would bother me is Thursday if the rain would keep up that long.
ReplyDeleteI agree with an earlier poster who said that Saturday night racing kills local short tracks. But the Daytona 500 should have special attention, especially since they already do special qualifying, consoloation races, and an All Star Shootout. To Loosewheel, That double header could prove exciting, and economically viable to the fans, who travel cross country.... I never meant any disrespect with my "casual" fan comment, I too, know some that tune in when ever, I just don't label them casual. If NASCAR truly wants a "new" fan, they should try to get them to go to a race. I have ran into so many people that went for the first time, and they were hooked! Just sayin'... Thanks everyone for not beating me up too bad...lol
ReplyDeleteMaybe Mikey will have to leave to and go back to Charlotte today.
ReplyDeleteAfter yesterday I just can't stomach anymore.
He wore me out with Fox's extended coverage of the RAIN dely.
Nascar in Primetime should be fun.
The pre-race show was done yesterday afternoon, so all they have to do is go race...BTW...a few years ago, on Monday following the Daytona 500, we were on I 10 in LA, and ALL the top name haulers were heading west to Phoenix... seems they brought the Phoenix cars from Charlotte to Daytona, so the big rigs could leave from Daytona that morning.
ReplyDeleteWOFL (Fox Orlando) radar looks good at this time (5:05 PM EST). They will definitely try to start around 7:15 PM, maybe with a Safety Car Start (laps count under caution). They will get the race in, although MSNBC is reporting chance of storms and rain goes up to 55% at 10 PM (when the finish is expected).
ReplyDeleteThe $200,000 lap will be important. If the radar shows green nearby, and we're close to the $200,000 lap, we could see hard racing. If we get 96 laps and there's a Safety Car for rain, NASCAR will likely have the Safety Car run five slow laps to reach 101 laps, and if they cannot continue, call off the $200,000 lap (100 must be a green flag lap; otherwise, it's five after restart), and get home after 102 laps.
@ glenc , I liked what you said on your 12:52 PM post. Also, I'm guessing your co-worker saw JG's flip on the news or the many airings of sportscenter.
ReplyDeleteI was reading on Jayski about the rules to the Shootout and the now known as the Debacle 500 Qualifying. Back in 2003, they changed Q to Saturday because of the conflict with the SB on Sunday. That made sense. Had brian france not changed this years' schedule (worried about SB) we'd be talking about a great race two weeks ago. The one good thing about the schedule this year is no off weekend two weeks into the season.
Garry, it's probably just a case of different ways to describe things. I was a more serious race fan for like a year before I actually went to a race, but if you can get someone there, you're right, it's the best thing. The trouble is not everyone has access. I was lucky the Glen is close by plus we have a few local tracks. I got into it because a friend was.
ReplyDeleteTodd, in a rain delayed race, they still do the anthem again (unfortunately, I've been to two). But I don't think it's necessary to show it on TV again, we already saw it once. They don't show driver introductions or the Canadian anthems or lots of other things.
Dot, you may be right but I was thinking it's more likely he was channel surfing. I'll have to ask him though.
Well one more segment I can not
ReplyDeletewatch. Anything with Mikey. But I
fear that the suits cant get enough
of him.
Even if he talked in a normal
fashion -- which wont happend. and
of course he wont shut up.
Maybe he will only be on in the
pre race shows. Please touch the
monitor here ><<>>< let us pray.
this has the potential to be huge for nascar tv, attendance will look bad at daytona, but look at mnf ratings, nascar in prime time, get ready
ReplyDeleteWhy can't FOX do a traditional epic starting lineup for the Daytona 500? They even had theme music, but Joy stopped introducing the drivers after row 3. Arggg, they had multiple pace laps to talk to Tony Stewart & Carl Edwards.
ReplyDeleteFox and DW hit an all-time low when DW claimed Jimmy Johnson had learned from Danica to take his hands off the steering wheel when involved in a violent crash. 5 time champion JJ learned this from Danica Patrick?! Does Fox and DW think we are just plain stupid?
ReplyDeleteNo wonder TV ratings continue to decline, with mental midgets in the booth, the focus on a small handful of drivers while completely ignoring the other 39 drivers and cars in the race. After the insane comment by DW claiming Danica taught the 42 driver in the field how to properly drive in a violent crash, I turned the TV off and the radio on.
Mike Joy and the Waltrips are ruining the broadcast...Joy should work on Madison Avenue, with his constant promo placements and over-hype...M.W. can never be impartial...He's a team owner...D.W. claims every driver that takes the lead will win the race...Oh, another commercial; bathroom break...What a bore this sport has become.
ReplyDeleteWe gave up om the race and drove back from Daytona today, rain all the way. Can't figure put how to get to the Twitter chat.
ReplyDeleteI think the coverage has been below average until Juan blew up the jet dryer. FOX was in their prime when NASCAR was dealing with the bizzare.
ReplyDeleteTV nightmares begin, looks like FOX baltimore dropped out at 11:35 EST
ReplyDeleteGiven all that we've seen in this Speedweeks, that was a terribly anticlimactic finish. The new aero rules didn't create a good closing rate when it would have been really useful.
ReplyDeleteDannica Patrick learned to let go of the steering wheel when her rearend got damaged by watching the crash-test dummys on TV. It wasn't her fault anyway!
ReplyDeleteI turned my TV on at 8:30 am and my DirecTV guide had NASCAR Racing on Fox showing at 9am. This is on the West coast. Don't know if there's any difference in area coverage, but my area was covered.
ReplyDelete
