Let The Indy Rain Dance Begin (5:30PM N'wide Qual - ESPN2)

SPEED updates NASCAR Live will be at 7PM with a full wrap-up of the day in Indy.

Confirmed - ESPN is now going to split the coverage between the Nationwide Series qualifying and Sprint Cup qualifying.

1:30PM - NASCAR staying on ESPN2 and tennis moving to ESPN Classic.

1:15PM - Nationwide cars are now practicing until 2PM. NASCAR is saying possible Cup qualifying at 2PM. No idea where they are going to televise it yet. Stay tuned.

Noon ET - Jet dryers are out but the mist is still falling and there is a focus on getting Nationwide Series race started tonight.

11AM - Rain again and the track drying is halted. Now long delay into afternoon. No TV schedule updates yet. SPEED and ESPN are going to have a long day.

10:15AM - Lost both tracks to rain again, schedules out the window. Will advise when changes come from NASCAR at both IMS and ORP.

Rain is going to be a factor today in Indy and that is going to leave the TV networks scrambling. Both ESPN and SPEED were all set for a sophisticated dance of splitting time on the air from the same location. Rain will change all of that.

NASCAR fans are going to have to stay on their toes to keep up with the potential changes that weather may bring to the Saturday schedule starting with the 10AM ET live qualifying scheduled for the Sprint Cup Series.

The complete TV schedule as originally planned is listed on the right side of the TDP mainpage. We will use this post to keep up with the schedule changes and get your comments on the ESPN and SPEED coverage during the daytime.

  1. thanks for the heads up..I had forgotten to check the weather this morning.

anyone watch the F1 qualifying? Timing & scoring went down, it was a comedy of errors trying to sort out the positions. Anyways, the analysts had a lot of fun with it, saying stuff like 'Bernie needs to spend some money on timing & scoring'...it was very refreshing. All I could think was, would we *ever* hear an analyst make a comment like that about the Frances or the track owners? I really doubt it.

Now I'm going to look at the radar.

  2. This definitely makes things interesting, as ESPN2 was hoping to be off the air at 1:30 for tennis coverage. I doubt they can get all the cars qualified by then starting at 11:30. They'll probably end up scrapping television coverage of Nationwide final practice.

Plus the Sprint Cup teams will be on a much tighter schedule...about the time qualifying will get done now is about the time the first practice session was to take place....and then that goes up against Nationwide qualifying that's supposed to start at 5p.m.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Let me add, if I were to guess, that 2p.m. Sprint Cup practice will probably get scrapped and instead of one hour of practice at 3:30, they'll probably make it one 90 minute practice session and that broadcast will go to 5p.m. just in time to send it to ORP for Nationwide qualifying.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Being told a new TV schedule will be along shortly. All of that is nice until it rains again.

    JD

    ReplyDelete
  5. Just lost both tracks to rain again, TV schedules out the window.

Will keep everyone updated. This is going to be a very long day.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I have to think at this point qualifying will get scrapped and the focus will be on practicing. Just don't lose track of your remote for the TV.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Mike, don't forget there are a lot of drivers who are doing double duty today at IMS and ORP.

    ReplyDelete
  8. The radar looks good........No more rain on the way

    ReplyDelete
  9. And where can I find qualifying order . . . of course it might be a moot point if the rain keeps up and they won't have it.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Exactly JD....the worst possible scenario is taking place. I had a look at the revised schedule, but as you mentioned, it's all out the window because of the rain.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Vicky, I bet Jayski.com has it for you.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Candice Spencer: Would anyone be surprised if qualifying was cancelled in favor of a Tony Stewart/Jeff Gordon front row?

    Let the conspiracy theories begin.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Radar looks good, but little showers keep poping up without a lot of warning. Mood at the track right now is not very optimistic.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Oh good Lord! Spent 20 minutes fixing the DVR last night and ran around this moring getting everything done so I could watch between laundry loads and now this mess. Don't you just love mother nature.

Thanks for the continuing updates JD hope you didn't have anything else planned for today.

    ReplyDelete
  15. NASCAR Nationwide Series: Second revised ORP schedule: when the track is ready NNS practice goes till 2 PM ET. Qualifying still 5:35 PM ET, race at 8 PM ET.

    ReplyDelete
  16. One good thing is they're showing that special some of you missed on Thursday. Not all at once but they should get the whole show in during this rain delay.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Are you freakin' kidding me?? Kelly Ripa doing race interviews? How stupid is ESPN? I don't want to see an anorexic, air-headed TV host, who knows absolutely nothing about Nascar, interviewing drivers. Regis and Kelly have great ratings, so what's the reasoning behind this? Don't get me wrong, Kelly is OK in her element interviewing actors and selling appliances, but why, oh why are they pushing her in Nascar??

    ReplyDelete
  18. Just turned on qualifying after watching F1 qualifying. Reports on the BBC say Massa is stable but looks like he won't race tomorrow. Shows why debris on a track is so dangerous.

As for ESPN - having all four guys with those blue shirts is kind of distracting.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Isn't Regis & Kelly a Disney property, as is ESPN? That's probably why.

    ReplyDelete
  20. dar,

Gordon is a NYC resident and has been a guest host with Reg and Kelly many times.

The piece is designed for the Indy pre-race show and is supposed to show Gordon and his NYC connections.

Jerry did not really talk about those parts of it.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Not as bad as the disco shirts on SPEED, but a bad color for TV.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Ripa has some big thing on QVC next Saturday so I'm sure there's some cross promotion going on.

I have no idea why I know about the QVC thing much less Kelly Ripa. On the rare occasion I'm up that early in the morning I'm watching Robin Meade :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. You imagine what the double-duty teams are going through with this rain-delay? It's not like the Brickyard and ORP are next door to one another. Lot of logistics being thought about

    ReplyDelete
  24. Bevo

Room mate told me first thing about Massa wreck. I saw the clip on youtube. Hope he is ok..talking afterwards means nothing,

with head injuries or concussion, they need to keep a CLOSE eye on hims the next 24-48 hrs. My room mate heard he was so agitated he had to be sedated, on SPEED. I wonder what that is about. Can't remember hearing that as a side effect of concussion but if it was a hard hit to the frontal lobe area....that concerns me.

Major DARK THUNDERSHOWERS in SW OH this AM..2 hrs from Indy..heard more were coming this afternoon...from that direction. Winds and hail...hope they are wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  25. @JD- Yep. Plus a background of parked cars is kind of odd too.

    ReplyDelete
  26. 11AM: NASCAR lost both tracks again. Long delay into afternoon.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Currently more drizzle at the track.

    ReplyDelete
  28. @Sophia- Didn't see anything about him being agitated. He waved to the cameras on the stretcher, kept his helmet on.

I'm sure he's going to be a bit peeved after getting hit in the head with a big old spring off a Brawn car

    ReplyDelete
  29. I just don't see them getting qualifying in at this point. They really can't push practice much later.

    ReplyDelete
  30. 2 separate tracks, but everyone is in uniform with their shirts. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  31. So I guess this means Arute will not be on the IRL coverage from Edmonton eh?

    ReplyDelete
  32. This is going to be a long two hours until the 1:30PM off time.

Better start knocking on the RV doors and getting the drivers out to talk.

    ReplyDelete
  33. after hearing there are weepers at ORP, i feel there will be no race tonight. One storm after another coming in again here and Indy gets the storms before we do.

    Sigh.

Mother Nature has really interferred with lots of racing this year. Not a race fan.

word veri is allows...as in allow us to race?

    ReplyDelete
  34. It's too bad ESPN2 has tennis coverage stuck in there at 1:30p.m.....otherwise, they could've shown Nationwide practice once it got going until 2p.m. and then the 2 Cup practice sessions. This has to be a nightmare.

    ReplyDelete
  35. is ESPN going to move qualifying - if it happens - to Classic at 1:30 eastern? ESPN U?

SPEED comes on at 2 PM - don't even want to guess how that will play into it.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Absolutely no way to tell. That is why it's soo much fun to watch.

ESPN should have been loaded for bear in this broadcast. Talked about IMS issues, NASCAR news and used all the folks at the track that they have.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I hope SPEED will at least band on RV doors to speak to drivers.

THOSE interviews have been some great ones over the years..few years back seeing Harvick's dogs...and Tony's..and somebody's cat? Give us a peek behind the scens instead of B roll footage....sigh

    ReplyDelete
  38. I meant bang on doors...give us a feel of what drivers are DOING during all this... baking cookies? Watching tv, playing games?

    ReplyDelete
  39. The rain has slowed to an extremely light mist. The radar looks the best it has all day. Unfortunately, there is no grey visible on the frontstretch. If we're going to get this in, I'm not sure we can have any more showers.

    ReplyDelete
  40. weather.com radar looks great to me.

    ReplyDelete
  41. nothing against greg, but why does he get so many interviews compared to many other drivers?

    Just curious....

    ReplyDelete
  42. Of course it's raining! There's a *race* scheduled! :sigh:

This should be an interesting day!

I'm in Philly this weekend so but might get a chance to pop in tomorrow for the race chat :) Provided no rain

Kelly Ripa on ESPN? What was that all about? Odd indeed!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Why show this disaster of last year? I wouldn't want to remind anyone of this train wreck.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I"ll keep checking in with TDP.

Being west coast I had it on DVR. Saw the rain, logged on to TDP, and just FF looking for things I wanted to watch.

@Dot from yesterday.Firmly believe in in-race reporter jinx :-). And pointing on Caitlin jinxed her. Although she did finish which is amazing. Maybe I'm down to partial jinxing.

Also believe in early/late (depending on track) qual draw jinx. As in, JR had 6th qual slot, so I was sure the rains were coming...LOL! Dang.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Speaking of in cam jinx. Some writer tweeted days ago Tony Stewart is the in race reporter!

    Say it AIN'T SO!! Aargh.

It's still very dark here but the trees, lawn look lush and green. And the birds are singing LOUDLY so they are happy. That was before I fed them...hmmm..maybe they were calling for their food now that I think about it.

It's so COOL outside. What a delightful July we've had for the most part.

M Reid said 18 ORP to fit inside IMS. I love statistics like that. :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. It looks as if ESPN is running out of fill material.

    ReplyDelete
  47. speaking of rain why not intro sliced bread with New Hampshire shortened race.

    ReplyDelete
  48. rain shortened that is

    ReplyDelete

  50. from Kenny Wallace: In My Opinion...All Qualifying is Cancelled!!...Right Now Everything is for T.V..You Notice They Are Not Using Jet Dryer at Indy..

    ReplyDelete
  51. Kenny Wallace on twitter points out that at IMS there are no jet dryers on track and he surmises thats because they want rubber to stay and not be blown off - he thinks all qualf if off

    ReplyDelete
  52. That's what I've thought as well. This was all about holding the audience into thinking qualifying would take place.

    ReplyDelete
  53. @ WC Diane, it was you. I couldn't remember.

I woke up early to see qual. Saw rain and went back to sleep.

Does NASCAR take into consideration the weather when they set the schedule? I know it can rain at any time, but why do they go to tracks that tend to rain when a race is there?

Don't you love Twitter? Insider info.

    ReplyDelete
  54. but it don't rain in Indiana in the Summertime. well at least in song.

    ReplyDelete
  55. actually Indianapolis in the song. IIRC

    ReplyDelete
  56. Dot, did you tape early Q'ing? They showed some of the special you missed, I guess, Wednesday, not Thursday. I thought about you while watching.

    ReplyDelete
  57. @ Karen, no, dang it. Again, I don't live right.

I'll just have to wait until August, per JD.

    ReplyDelete
  58. If ORP is 6 miles away as the crow flies, how far is it driving? I know the guys take a helicopter. I think it's funny when they make you think it's right next door.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Jet dryers are back on the track.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Mikey said last night on truck race that he got help from police and beat KyB in his helicopter.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Just got in & got groceries put away, so if this was noted already sorry for repeat.
Has anyone noticed how good Doc is in this rain delay? He is energetic, engages well & on topic. Not the cricket master he is as PxP during race. This should point out he is in the wrong job! This is the real Doc us oldsters remember.

    ReplyDelete
  62. google maps says that ORP is about 7 miles from MIS and 14 minutes driving (w/normal traffic)

Funny how Larry Mac on FX used to make it sound like they were across the street from each other.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Dan, jet dryers on which track? I think I can hear them at ORP. Not the Speedway?

    ReplyDelete
  64. It's about 10 miles away from one track to the other. There's an interstate that runs north to south, and the Brickyard is on the east side of that interstate...and ORP is on the west side.

    ReplyDelete
  65. hard to tell from the infield studio as that is in merchandise row or a parking lot but nowhere near the track

    ReplyDelete
  66. Karen, one was going down the frontstretch as I was posting. I can't hear any right now, but I'm behind the pagoda, so I'm not sure if it was a one off deal or if they're somewhere else on the track.

    ReplyDelete
  67. They just ran the "we hope you enjoyed today's broadcast" which is used when closing out a broadcast. Was that just run by mistake, or does it mean something?

    ReplyDelete
  68. POLE DAY? message to J Punch - This IS NOT INDY 500.

    ReplyDelete
  69. in my best opinion when they run that disclaimer the NASCAR portion of the telecast is over . nothing more is going to happen til at least 2:00 PM

    ReplyDelete
  70. They are going to have cars on track at 2pm to qualify JP just said?

How is that possible on a huge flat track? Wow

    ReplyDelete
  71. Rusty "it's a big big track weather it's little or big" WHAT

    ReplyDelete
  72. Thanks for the geography lesson.

JP is good when a race isn't happening. The man cannot be spontaneous. That's his problem. This is what made him good on pit road. He had time to formulate his questions and what he was going to say.

    ReplyDelete
  73. what a shock - Jerry just confirmed my guess - cars on the track at 2PM after ESPN goes off the air.

Bet they knew that for a while.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Just said @IMS no action until 2:00, at ORP atound 1:15

    ReplyDelete
  75. Doc says cars to be on track - stay tuned - so is tennis being moved?

Guess Goodyear lost & jet dryers are gonna be used anyway. Hmm...

    ReplyDelete
  76. So, are we going to see any of this?

    ReplyDelete
  77. I'm trying to frame in my mind what this means for television. 2pm is when Speed was going to televise Sprint Cup practice. Could Speed be televising the qualifying session?

    ReplyDelete
  78. Mikey getting workout from blond trainer with accent. :)

    ReplyDelete
  79. WOW is that Mikey's motorcoach! GORGEOUS inside!!

    ReplyDelete
  80. WOW a trainer being interviewed LOL rain delay is really taking no prisoners!

    ReplyDelete
  81. ESPN2 has tennis from 1:30 to 3:30p.m. and ESPN has an Major League Soccer game at 3:00p.m.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Dan, you're the Lucky Dog 'cause you're there. Have a blast!!!

    ReplyDelete
  83. NASCAR.COM

NASCAR has targeted 2 p.m. ET for the start of qualifying at the Brickyard. Meanwhile, over at ORP, Nationwide Series practice is set to begin at 1:15 p.m. ET.

    ReplyDelete
  84. What's on now? Tennis doesn't start until 10:30 PDT.

    ReplyDelete
  85. let me get this straight. NO TV coverage at 2pm???

I need to make a quick run to Kroger.

Well, only if we want food to eat :) London broil roast on sale --for tomorrows dinner

    ReplyDelete
  86. Too bad ESPN folks couldn't find someone more involved in the racing to interview - they are scraping the bottom of the barrel especially since she barely speaks English and was very hard to understand. Who wants to look at a very sweaty Michael Waltrip?

    ReplyDelete
  87. I guess this is on till 10:30.

    ReplyDelete
  88. There are currently five jet dryers on the track. There is some grey showing and the radar is clear. We've even got a little sun trying to come through. Hold your breath.

    ReplyDelete
  89. The best info they could give now is where is Q'ing to be shown so I can take a nap and not miss anything.

    ReplyDelete
  90. So are we getting Nascar at 2pm or Tennis. My DVR wants to know

    ReplyDelete
  91. Could they move this to BSPNCL? There's a block of bull riding on.

    ReplyDelete

ESPN is gonna tell us when they want to. Surprise!

    ReplyDelete
  93. Karen, if you consider being here since 6:30 lucky...

    ReplyDelete
  94. Here's a thought....the tennis match is in Indianpolis as well....maybe that's being affected by the weather too?

    ReplyDelete
  95. Dan you close enough to the car for a nap. You got tickets for tomorrow too? I'm still jealous rain or no rain

    ReplyDelete
  96. Less than 20 mins of practice that we get to see?

I'm going to the pool soon. Tired of planning my day at BSPNs whim.

    ReplyDelete
  97. NRF - no can do on the nap. I'm actually working this race.

    ReplyDelete
  98. So, Nationwide practice from 1:15PM through 2PM.

    ReplyDelete
  99. @Dot - I hear that! I got stuff to do, and They will lose my eyeballs too - it will be on in background.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Tennis at 1:30, so I figure practice from now till 1:30. Hopefully they'll tell us at 1:30.

    ReplyDelete
  101. No clue what is going on, ESPN2 has tennis in about ten minutes or so.

    ReplyDelete
  102. @ Dan, you cheat at work too? What do you do there?

    ReplyDelete
  103. the ESPN crawl cuts off on bottom of my tv..what was that practice they just showed from ORP? yesterday.

I need to run a brief errand.
I guess I will just leave if NOBODY can tell me..left the room briefly so if they ANNOUNCED the line up. I missed it.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Sophia, they're practicing now in NW.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Pretty soon they should have a "Program Alert" crawl running at the bottom of the screen.

    ReplyDelete
  106. @Karen

WOW, the track is dry enough? So much for the rain and weeper issues I read about an hour or so ago.

stepped out of room for a moment. Miss a moment, miss alot. Thanks.

Off to the store. back later

Kroger on Saturday...aka Screaming kids day. oy vey

    ReplyDelete
  107. Don't remember reading what happened to Steve Wallace and Lagasse after hauler invite. Anybody know? I think I have the drivers right.

    ReplyDelete
  108. It doesn't appear they're leaving practice coverage....the program alert crawl should run any second now

    ReplyDelete
  109. ESPN2 stays with nascar Tennis on Classic

    ReplyDelete
  110. Tennis moved to BSPNCL???? Did Hell freeze over?

    ReplyDelete
  111. DARN - OPTION WE DIDNT EVEN THINK OF

    ReplyDelete
  112. Tennis is going to ESPN Classic. That tells me everything from Indianapolis will be on ESPN2 right on through Nationwide qualifying. SPEED probably won't televise anything.

    ReplyDelete
  113. It's Indy. I just cannot believe they did not update that for fans until right now.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Thanks ESPN DVR is happy and now I can go get some lunch. Oh wait I think the washer is stopped. This is going to be a long day. But at least I am not watching tennis :)

    ReplyDelete
  115. Just announced, qual at 2, practice from 5:30 to 7.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Ok...time for exercise...I'll keep hitting refresh on TDP to get status on qualifying.

Ha..Rusty...Kyle gets all "amped up". Uh...do you think NOS energy drink appreciated that...LOL! Also..Rusty "Kyle did this last year, he's doing it this year....". Brilliant.

Weather...same at the 500...good news we camp in lot across from entrance to track. Never get used to it. First time, 1997, my now husband took me to race. Stayed in Bloomington, hour away. Up at 3AM to get ready, drive into track. Driving thunder/lightning storm. Got to hear first hand cannon going off at 5AM. Slept in car. Got to seats. Saw Stealth Bomber fly direct overhead coming at us (inside turn 3, no longer there). Started raining. Race cancelled. Only 3rd time in 500 history. Flew home Monday. Watched on TV Tuesday morning (lucky it was still raining Monday, so at least got to watch).

And yes, I still married him. See above...we RV across from the track!!

    ReplyDelete
  117. I thought to myself 'ESPN, do the right thing for the NASCAR fans.' And they did! (up to this point)

    Interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  118. ok how does SPEED now play into this - they have practice at 2PM and ESPN has final practive at 3:30.

Likely will not be two practices - is SPEED then shut out?

    ReplyDelete
  119. Hot - so far so good but they might slip the rug off from under us.

    ReplyDelete
  120. ESPN2 is staying for Nationwide practice and then will do the Sprint Cup Series quals.

SPEED cannot be live during this time, so look for standby programming.

The schedule will still be flexible, so keep an ear out.

    ReplyDelete
  121. is this Randy LaJoie first race (in the booth)? i haven't watched NW races much this year.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Like that new program alert... reminds me of a orange Tootsie Pop! :P

    ReplyDelete
  123. He has been working for ESPN doing NASCAR Now and selected races for three years now.

    ReplyDelete
  124. I'm off to the pool. Read you guys later.

  126. has Punch been around NASCAR this long and not know how Kenny Wallace got the nickname herman? - ok neither did I but i found out on wikipedia - point is that JP should know everything or have a researcher to do it for him. I did it it in 20 seconds

    from wikipedia

Lake Hill Speedway track promoter Bob Miller noticed Kenny Wallace’s boisterous behavior and started calling him “Herman,” after a mischievous cartoon character named Herman the German.

    ReplyDelete
  127. I think Randy is nervous the beginning of the broadcast then he gets into the racing and strategy. Glad the cars are out on the track too. Couldn't Roush find another driver for the 16 instead of putting Matt in there after 10 years??? Surely there's a worthy driver somewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  128. oops, need to turn off laptop.

for some reason, if I post and then leave laptop here, it makes it look like I did not post yet so I sent same posts, several comments apart.

Sorry for the self deletes folks.

It's a drag having short term memory problems.

  129. WOWSERS! Other sports being moved for NASCAR?!? I looked at the TV & stopped in my tracks at the program alert!

    Thanks ESPN.

    ReplyDelete
  130. apology here - to Dr Punch

sorry about JP reference & Herman Kenny Wallace- its Marty Reid - same deal applies - sorry JP

whatever happened to NASCAR's research - I remember Meyers making fun of him on FOX and hearing his name mentioned during TNT

PATRICK - thats it. JD does he still work for NASCAR but perhaps not ESPN?

    ReplyDelete
  131. researcher Patrick - used to work for FOX and TNT/NBC.

C Meyers always made fun of him during race breaks.

    He still around.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Pat Perrin (sp?) No clue where he is now.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Not a good start to pull away from the first driver's qualifying run mid-lap to show the "wow factor" of a full-screen shot of the series' 21st ranked driver walking down pit road signing autographs.

    ReplyDelete
  134. J.D.,

I got the first look at Bat-Cam right after Matt Kenseth got off the chopper. It gave a great swooping shot coming down the front stretch/pit road.

Thanks for reminding me this IS BSPN showing quals.

    Off to store for me...sigh.

    I miss SPEED!!

    ReplyDelete
  136. Thank you ESPN for not making NASCAR second class citizens.

Thank you JD. I would have given up with rain delay blah blah blah and probably missed that quals were still going to be shown.

NO THANK YOU ESPN for giving the results of todays Tour de France stage. Those of us on the west Coast get it at 4AM so we have to DVR. Since quals were on at 7AM checked in there first not even thinking about it and lo and behold the results. Not enough time to tape over bottom of screen. Stupid we have to resort to that.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Good to see ESPN using the Tivo style of qualifying or they just have enough time with the long warm speed-up lap.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Pet peeve---a driver is qualifying---on track action---ESPN gives us a pit road interview as if thats more important than what is currently going on in turn 1,2,3 & 4---Jamie take it down two rounds & lighten up---between her & Andrea Kraemer---I don;t know who is more fawning & "way over the top" Juan Pablo are you as fast as you look???????yee ghads....

    ReplyDelete
  139. Kurt Busch---Did you really want to qualify? Please Jamie--Whats it Like to race for Roger Penske----?

    Wow---

    ReplyDelete
  140. Jamie is not maybe having the best pit reporting kind of day.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Booth doesn't think anyone will catch the 5 unless things cloud up again. They're doubful that anyone will catch the 88. Someone commented that a front row of the 5 and 88 would be "good for us"

    ReplyDelete
  142. To DP Editor:
Am I being too critical or do the people at ESPN actually think that she add's to the coverage---It never seems to change---do they not review her past tapes of their previous interviews to improve the q & a?

    ReplyDelete
  143. Dan, that is before JPM kicked Jr. from the front row.

    ReplyDelete
  144. They're doing it again Kyle is qualifying----they can't help themselves....

    ReplyDelete
  145. Karen - correct. I had posting issues that delayed my post.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Why can't we have a next to qualify scroll....in place of the 2008 results.....?
    After all it's 2009 & we're watching qualifying---

    ReplyDelete
  147. Patrick the researcher is still around. He splits time during the first part of the year with Fox/ESPN then he works just for ESPN.

    ReplyDelete
  148. I think there's been more commercials in the last hour than all of rain delay time. Must've not wanted to lose us.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Speed will have a NASCAR Live at 7 pm to recap qualifying and the final practice.

    ReplyDelete
  150. anon 2:51PM,

Like all the NASCAR folks, they came from different places. Shannon was over on SPEED and Jamie was a model/reporter on motorcycle and XGames type stuff.

Jamie is sometimes too aggressive in certain situations and just does not get a good reaction from the person she is interviewing.

This is their first spin in the Cup garage this season, so it should be interesting to see how the big boys treat the entire ESPN pit reporting crew.

    ReplyDelete
  151. Since I do not enjoy Mr. Evernham, I would rather he be absent from the booth.

Poor Dr. Punch is not doing too well. Pole Day and now he just seems to be reading his cards. Sad.

I still do not understand why ESPN doesn't put Bestwick in the booth.

I really do watch qualifying and practice to see the cars. ESPN hasn't grasped this concept.

Third season might just be the third strike for ESPN with me. (thought I would throw in a stick and ball reference for them) :)

    ReplyDelete
  152. Anyone else lose the radio feed for qualifying thatruns through pitcommand?

    ReplyDelete
  153. Why do you cut away for talking heads--on track action is what this is about....why no in car cams?

    ReplyDelete
  154. I'm not going to scroll through, but has anyone noticed that the ESPN feed is delayed by like 10 min? I have Jayski's qual order and results page open, and I can see where everyone runs 5 drivers or so ahead of ESPN.

    ReplyDelete
  155. @JD- Jamie did IRL races for a couple of seasons before Cup. She was actually pretty good back then, she has regressed since then in my opinion. Wonder how much is due to the person in charge of the pit reporters now.

    ReplyDelete
  156. @Brandon- They're doing Tivo-style so they cover each car

    ReplyDelete
  157. Brandon, Behind is good. Tivo means we see all the cars, only thing better- real time and NO commercials but that isn't an option.

    ReplyDelete
  158. bevo- gotcha. Sounds like something ESPN would do.

    ReplyDelete
  159. DJ sure is throwing it down to the track a lot isn't he? :)

    ReplyDelete
  160. Best moment of Q'ing with Tony and Mrs. Haas. She's great.

    ReplyDelete
  161. @Karen- I don't think she's Russian ;)

    ReplyDelete
  162. Bevo, cute. But she sure loves her some Tony.

    ReplyDelete
  163. @Karen- it is amazing the transformation to "cuddly" Smoke :)

    ReplyDelete
  164. Derrick Cope is out. Sterling Marlin is now on the bubble.

    ReplyDelete
  165. Smokey14, thanks for ruining it for the rest of us.

    ReplyDelete
  166. SWEET interview with Tony and MRs. Haas

Max Papis SUCH A GRATEFUL sweet man...and answers comments and speaks to fans on Twitter. UNLIKE some that just yap generics to get the most FOLLOWERS like a high school game. Max is always grateful and honest..as is his wife..
I swear I hear his Italian accent in his tweets and he shares lots of pics. Wonder if he knows about Bubbletweet and has a web cam.

Tony Kanann helps me learn Portuguese.

Just got in from quick small trip to grocery. Glad I did not sit home THINKING I would SEE CARS on the track...all sorts of interviews.

BSPN does not get it..so sad. For NASCAR fans.

I hope Felippe Massa gets thru surgery ok...that wreck hit youtube shortly after it happened.

I can see why my room mate was so upset witnessing it LIVE.

P.S. Tony makes me proud I named my new rescue kitten STEWART..he is even very fast with nikname SMOKE as he is smoky gray, too. :)

    ReplyDelete
  167. Max Papis is the last to qualify. Let's see if he can beat Marlin's 51.22 to make the show tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  168. Jd

Seems you need to post a NO SPOILER rule for some of us who count on tv.

    thanks Smokey (NOT!)

    ReplyDelete
  169. JD are we going to see Happy Hour on TV?

    ReplyDelete
  170. Sure glad Jerry Punch told me that Bill Elliot met Mark Martin when he just said Mark.

    ReplyDelete
  171. SPEED says 7PM for a NASCAR Live update show.

ESPN said that they are just going to stay on ESPN2 and do as much NASCAR as they can unless it rains.

Should be back on schedule with the N'wide quals.

    ReplyDelete
  172. Scott Speeds sunglasses! LMAO...look like something out of the 60s!

    Mike Skinner

Again LESSON TO KYLE BUSCH, how to be classy in interview when you are totally DISAPPOINTED not to make a big race like the Brickyard. Felt bad for him.

    ReplyDelete
  173. Spoiler Alert. Mike was a little premature with that disappointment

    ReplyDelete
  174. It's been a long day for them, they've been on the air with Indy/ORP coverage since 10 AM!

I finally did see what happened to Felipe Massa... eek! Hope he recovers.

    ReplyDelete
  175. Everybody send a love Tweet to Max!

    ReplyDelete
  176. As much as I hate Papis didn't make it, glad Skinner did b/c Guy Fieri's restaurant is on his hood.

    ReplyDelete
  177. WOW! MIKE SKINNER IS IN!!

WOW..I hope he gets another interview! YES! SMILING BIGGER!

Woo hoo another older guy on the pole,

Max will be so disappointed :(

    ReplyDelete
  178. Nationwide Series qualifying on ESPN2 at 5:30PM ET.

    ReplyDelete
  179. Jack Arute on the Nationwide coverage? What does he know about short track stock car racing?

    (I'm kidding ...)

    ReplyDelete
  180. Just a quick note here -
While I was kind of listening & catching a glimpse when I could - was it me or as the broadcast progressed did Doc fade? He seemed to run out of gas. I know it was a long day - yet everyone else managed to sound alive.

If its me I'm sure you guys will let me know.

    ReplyDelete
  181. Jo, Punch was fine when he was in his reporter role hosting the infield conversation.

Once the cars got on the track and the grind began, it was progressively worse.

Sometimes, it is painful to watch after Mike Joy and Rick Allen.

    ReplyDelete
  182. Are the NW teams using last years' CUP tires?

Where did JR qualify? I swear I saw him on the first page on BSPNs line up. Jay is showing him 27th. Maybe too much pool for me today.

    ReplyDelete
  183. Note to cameramen:
    Zoom out! Zoom out!

    ReplyDelete
  184. @ Karen, thanks. Thought I lost my mind.

    ReplyDelete
  185. @ Daly Planet Editor
Thanks - it wasn't just me. So next up - does no one @ espn ever notice this? It very noticeable to a non pro from outside tvland, why does no one else inside tvland get it?

    ReplyDelete
  186. New last minute sponsor for JR, Depends. Poor guy.

    ReplyDelete
  187. @Dot
I did not know JR (John Roberts from RACE DAY) was in the race.

    Oh, you mean Junior. ;-)

I miss the SPEED/TNT guys already.

It is so muggy here, dewpoint now in 70's!! yikes. A bit lower in Indy.

Jr Stomach virus is not good. I can NOT imagine having clear mental state and driving car. not safe imo. But NASCAR allows sick drivers all the time.

If Jamie moved away to a new job, can I go on record that I FEEL i would not miss her interviews?

    ReplyDelete
  188. @ Jo, Ditto to your comment about JP. I missed Qual so I didn't hear him deflate.

@ dear Sophia, I nominate you as pit reporter to replace Jamie.

    ReplyDelete
  189. Did something happen? Last I saw JR qualified 3rd and in his interview he said he was better and planned to run entire practice. They were just going to fit Brad in the car and maybe let him do a few laps. JR has a new car first built by Lance. They will probably have to pry him out of the car after qualifying 3rd or 4th. Anyone???

    ReplyDelete
  190. WCD, agree about him getting out of car. No way unless he feels it's unsafe for him.

    ReplyDelete
  191. Massa in induced coma until tomorrow. Serious, life-threatening but stable after surgery.

    ReplyDelete
  192. Ms Dot

I thank you for your nomination to replace Jamie. I FEEL I could do a better job from home with my webcam and a microphoe...guys could be on one half of the tv, I on the other and I could host it on LIVESTREAM! Jamie has NO discernment for people's situation. (Jack Roush comes to mind)
Nor can she "feel" vibes from people.

I have tried to be patient with her and was glad to see her leave IRL.

But between her and TNT and MIKE WELLS camera work spoiling us & being gone, I feel she is going to get on some more nerves.

Only one thing about this Brickyard race: It needs more hyperbole!

    I feel it does.
