Live Blogging The Camping World Trucks From Texas (8:30PM - SPEED)

A long day of NASCAR TV on SPEED will cap with the Camping World Truck Series race. Krista Voda starts the pre-race show at 8:30PM with The Setup. Ray Dunlap and Adam Alexander are the pit reporters.

At 9PM, it will be Rick Allen, Phil Parsons and Michael Waltrip calling the action. This should be a dynamic event for the series. The field is a good mix of veterans, Cup driver cross-overs and some of the young guns.

SPEED's telecast may go a long way toward answering some of the issues raised when ESPN and NASCAR had problems this last week after Talladega. The truck series TV team covered the Saturday race from the very same track and had an outstanding telecast.

The coverage tonight should be straightforward, simple and effective. The high speeds and fast action of TMS mandate no excessive in-car cameras, no soundbite playback under green flag racing and quick transition into and out of commercial.

SPEED uses the racing TV fundamentals to put a comfortable telecast on the air. Voda sets the tone in the pre-race and Allen carries it through the on-track action.

This post will serve to host your comments on the Camping World Truck Series race from TMS on SPEED. To add your TV-related comment, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting.

Thanks for taking the time to stop by The Daly Planet and contribute your opinion.

  1. Well JD, we can't complain about poor scheduling with the trucks tonight and shouldn't get too many gripes about empty seats...should be a pretty decent show. See if Sauter and company can close the deal this time around!

  6. You jsut know Mikey took that picture of the three of them with his cell phone. Great pic. Truck racing go Rowdy!

  7. Would luv to play w/y'all tonite, but it's been a rough wk. Can only keep up w/a few things tonite & this is too late for an east coast gal..:( Liking this piece on the Set-Up rite now tho. A little behind the scences stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  8. cool piece there on Turner Motorsports

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  10. another nice behind the scenes feature.

    ReplyDelete
  11. went out to the kitchen for a snack and missed good segment. SMH

    Pamm

Gnite! Sorry you are so tired but understand.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Re: tails up pennies. You turn them over for the next person to pick up :)

    ReplyDelete
  13. JD, why doesn't ESPN ever have features like that about the smaller teams? TRG would be a great project for them, Baker-Curb in NW is another...

    ReplyDelete
  14. Graphic designer!?! That answer just about yanked my head off my sholders.

    ReplyDelete
  15. @ David, BSPN interviewing the smaller teams would detract from their JJ script.

I love that SPEED does that. That's how we find out about possible up and comers.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I just love when they interview the women.

    ReplyDelete
  17. David, that is why they had no defense for the Talladega fiasco.

There are soooo many great stories throughout the field, regardless of whether the TV boys "want" the racing to be one way.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Amazing to me that one pre-race show can remind me of all the reasons I love nascar, really excellent piece.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I really think that one-upped ESPN's segment last week by a good amount

    ReplyDelete
  20. Smaller Teams aren't in the script :(

    ReplyDelete
  21. Don't you wish ESPN could just get the same feeling for the sport going in the pre-race?

Maybe JP could be a key to that next season....hint hint...

    ReplyDelete
  22. it is neat when they interview the women...one of the main reasons I love this sport is because it really is a 'family' sport with families driving, being part of the crew, crew chief, announcers, on the staff of NASCAR...it is just so cool!

    ReplyDelete
  23. @ JD, are you preaching to the choir, or do you know something?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Good crowd from what I can see.

    ReplyDelete
  25. hmmm started out a few off notes in and out of key and shoulda not tried the two point 'free' at the end.jmo

    ReplyDelete
  26. other than that, good anthem.

My mouse keeps shutting down my FFox tonight and my touchpad makes my fingers hurt. Apologies ahead for any cut off sentences mid word

    ReplyDelete
  27. other than that, good anthem.

My mouse keeps shutting down my FFox tonight and my touchpad makes my fingers hurt. Apologies ahead for any cut off sentences mid word

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think JD knows WAAAY lots, he just won't ever tell, not sandbagging, just discreet ;)

    ReplyDelete
  29. That was NOT a very good rendition of the National Anthem ...

My sinuses hurt from it ...

    ReplyDelete
  30. I thought it was a great anthem, compared to what we have had to endure this year, she was an ace!

    Krista pit reporting tonight too?

    ReplyDelete
  31. We need some traveling anthem singers....

    ReplyDelete
  32. Waltrip seems to be getting the hang of this deal but Phil loves to give him grief!

    ReplyDelete
  33. David

I'm with JD..need some traveling anthem singers...that girl had a nice voice but it drifted off at times...easy to do accapella(sp) if you don't have a great ear for staying in tune.

    ReplyDelete
  34. You can tell the booth guys have so much fun together. I think that's what's missing on that other channel.

    ReplyDelete
  35. ok this mouse thing is shutting me down umpteen times and the race has not even started.

Need a glass of wine. No doubt will miss some tv excitement while I'm gone.

    ReplyDelete
  36. A couple of the really great anthem singers stand out this season, but I understand the track makes those arrangements.

    ReplyDelete
  37. The anthem started off fine, but right near the end we had to mute. It looks like a good crowd and wonderful weather. Wonder if Bevo is at the track?

    ReplyDelete
  38. It seems that there are more drivers from TX than the NC area these days.

    ReplyDelete
  39. David - She started off too high ... and wasn't able to properly go up the scale ... She'd have done much better starting on a lower note ...

Sophia - Just call me "Six" ...

The thing they missed on the "WaGs" bit was that Grampa's been married to Gramma longer than a lot of the drivers have been alive ... LOL ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  40. 'Here at SPEED' Says Rick, soto voche 'unlike that OTHER network'

    ReplyDelete
  41. And where's David Starr from Phil?

    ReplyDelete
  42. The old TV war got a little ugly this week, even NASCAR jumped in.

    ReplyDelete
  43. David,

Look at KB's stats, how can he NOT be fun to watch!?!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Im not going to be a singing critic, since I cant sing to save my life. I thought she did well, no where near as bad as some of the others we've had. Besides, do you really notice how bad they are at the track after a couple adult beverages? lol.

Phil mentioned where Starr was from....

    Green flag folks!!

    ReplyDelete
  45. So we expect 10 trucks to start and park?

    ReplyDelete
  46. So far so good.
To bad there is not enough money for practices and qual's.
Mikey haters beware, he's wound up tonite.
Then again all of they seem to be. Great excitement for the broadcast, but not the OVERHYPE we get from the other network. Just excited about what's happening.
Best anthem of the year for truck races.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Daly Planet Editor said...

"Man, these dudes are hauling the mail!"

That's good. JP could add that one to his repertoire:-)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Is it just me or are the guys STARTING out chattier than usual?

    David

I would put my money where my mouth is on anthem but no audio here. :) & Bubbletweet is only 30 seconds.

I love Mikey but he is yapping like a magpie...

these guys all over the track

    ReplyDelete
  49. Someone's off the track. A red truck.

    ReplyDelete
  50. nascar and espn = the blind leading the blind. The truck series and speed's broadcasts of it are the best of the top three series. I would LOVE to see speed do the NW's next year with the truck crew. Hmm maybe that would be hard if it isn't a companion race but they have planes don't they?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Mark Martin, in the 5 car, from Batesville, Arkansas is sailing his Hendrick Chevrolet into Turn 3.

    -JP

    ReplyDelete
  52. Its ok Sophia, I'm twitterless anyways :p

    ReplyDelete
  53. But Beating, JP would not know what a 'dude' was. He'd think it was some kind of Texas referance?

    ReplyDelete
  54. @ JD, you forgot the 50 yr old part.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Rick Allen and I really went at it over him mentioning the start and park trucks.

He thinks it's not important and that it takes away from the racing on the track.

I think the duty of the PXP guy is to tell us what the fans at the track are seeing, including the S&P trucks.

    What do you guys think?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Can't believe they are using this great old song in a Cialis ad...Be My Baby.

    First Viva las Vegas...and now...

Detest dipstick commercial too but there seems to be a theme tonight..;)

    ReplyDelete
  57. it only take a couple seconds to mention the s&pers so why not? I don't think it detracts, and if it keeps people more informed he should do it.

    ReplyDelete
  58. JD, you left out "50 year old".

    ReplyDelete
  59. The role of the guys in the booth is to document the action. Parking an entry is part of the action and should be documented. If a wreck occurred would it be documented? (Don't answer that one, ESPN.)

    ReplyDelete
  60. How did the camera get their right when Phil said trouble? It can be done. I'll be go to he**.

    ReplyDelete
  61. @ JD, if a truck starts a race, they should be mentioned when they park.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Well I think that's a place where Rick Allen underestimates what we want to hear about. If a guy falls out of the race, we want to know why. Even if it is a start and park.

It only takes a few seconds and doesn't kill you to do. Even recapping during a long green run going through the entire running order or mentioning all the guys off the track or out of the race would be good too.

SPEED does many things right, as does Rick Allen and company, but on that lone issue I disagree with him. I want to know.

    ReplyDelete
  63. JD

Some talking heads in NASCAR don't understand the hysteria over start and park cars & being called out. Says years ago they were called Independent teams...since this person had 30 years of history in the sport...I tend to believe him.

Thus I figure if teams S&P to survive in hard times, it's ok not to call them out (or in some eyes) humiliate them on tv.

As long as I can have good camera work and get other info...I am ok with not calling attention to it.

But I've only been watching 5 years so what do I know.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Speed lived up to their name on that wreck.

I think we got a new nickname to add to the already-long list of names for ESPN:

    TSPN (Too Slow).

    ReplyDelete
  65. We've been to all three series races at Texas and the vehicles really go fast and if they crash off turn 2 you can't see it from teh grandstands. The bad wreck we saw there was Reut & Lester in the trucks on the frontstretch. I think both of them were knocked out. Good racing and PXP so far sorry to see Stancil crash, he looks like a nice young guy.

    ReplyDelete
  66. No right or wrong, just different views on the subject.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Chris from NY said...

"Speed lived up to their name on that wreck.

Today, they're the 'Eternal Self Promotion Network'. ESPN is a 24 hour/7 day infomercial.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Took Mikey a while, but he found a way to get back at Phil too funny

    ReplyDelete
  69. Sophia, I see your point and its valid. I just feel it does more good to call a bit of attention to their cause by addressing the team is in a tough spot and is seeking help, than ignoring them completely.

    ReplyDelete
  70. See how they incorporated a replay that was NOT a crash?

    ReplyDelete
  71. @ JD, you mean the split screen?

    ReplyDelete
  72. David

I think it's ok to know if a team starts and then tell us when it's out of the race. but you don't need to call it by the name on tv as it REALLY has a stigma attached and has divided many who've love the sport for many years. I meant to clarify I still want to know if somebody stops racing...but the name "Start and Park"...well, hard to explain...kind of like a caste system but I understand why it sparks emotion from all sides.

    ReplyDelete
  73. They replayed Rick Crawford going through the grass....no crash, just a moment in the race.

    ReplyDelete
  74. @David--I think Vicky was being funny since she lives in Houston and he's a local boy :)

I also think those who fall out whether legitimately or due to S&Ping should be mentioned. It's only a handful and it's not like it's going to take an hour to so. An extra 5 minutes isn't going to impair the broadcast.

    ReplyDelete
  75. SPEED is very timely. I love their coverage. The fact that they show things we missed on a split screen is great.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Sophia 9:43

If they call out all the start and park teams and give them the distinction it is still advertising. Bad advertising is better than no advertising at all. These teams need all the help they can get, and if we insist the pxp guys call them out, that helps them. Good for us, good for them.

    ReplyDelete
  77. @ sophia I always thought it was a more PC way of saying 'field filler' which I think is really pajorative. I agree with you, it isn't necessary to say much more than that the truck/car is out.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I wish they would interview the guys who crash out like Stancil. I suppose they don't have a reporter at the care center. Maybe Ray could do it if he was wearing roller skates.

    ReplyDelete
  79. So when the 21 goes behind the wall because of a vibration after lap 2 Soph? ;)

I get what your saying though, it does have quite the negative stigma especially now...but there are some teams that their questionable practices have earned that stigma...

we'll see what they do in Phoenix. Maybe Rick will give it a try and see what the response is?

At the very least, informing us if a team has gone to the garage or has fallen out would be nice

    ReplyDelete
  80. See how they leave under green with the "natural sound" from the track and then come back directly to the racing?

No drivers on video, crazy music bumpers or race recaps under green.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Beating a Dead Horse:
Like I said, the list of nicknames is long. There'll never be enough.

Could this be another Todd & Kyle show?

    ReplyDelete
  82. Vicky, SPEED does not have enough budget for a third pit reporter and all the gear and staff that comes with them.

Once and a while, they keep Krista and she reports like last week from Talladega.

Hope next season after all the success of this series on TV that SPEED spends the money and gets a third reporter for every race.

    ReplyDelete
  83. JD, could not be said better.

    ReplyDelete
  84. "See how they leave under green with the "natural sound" from the track and then come back directly to the racing?

No drivers on video, crazy music bumpers or race recaps under green."

Good example of doing more with less. No endless self-promotion. (Harping on that again. Oh, that's my name!)

    ReplyDelete
  85. JD I have noticed they have used less of that bumper music that you didn't care too much for....

    ReplyDelete
  86. Look at that. Split screen to show us what was missed. Amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I think we should start the "Boot BSPN" petition.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Chris, we are about three years and 400 million dollars too late!

We got years and years for ESPN to go....

    ReplyDelete
  89. No one's started it yet, unfortunately.

    ReplyDelete
  90. JD

I love the added natural sounds and the WIDE ANGLE camera work even if the cars are spread out, we keep a sense of perspective! Go SPEED.

    David,

I don't care if they say the 21 went behind the wall because his dinner is ready. ;-) We can figure it out.

Still ALL CARS/trucks deserve to been SEEN on the tv without having to be in the top 10. Thus sponsors see value for their dollar.

Whatever helps the teams. I think we are arguing semantics maybe? Or splitting hairs? :)

    ReplyDelete
  91. Speed always announces the reason for caution after commercial break.

    ESPN waits.

    Speed wins.

    ReplyDelete
  92. @ dear Sophia, "his dinner's ready". You're killing me.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Where's the lap tracker so that we know what lap it is when they come back from commercial?!?!?

    ReplyDelete
  94. @ Chris NY. SPEED always wins over BSPN.

    ReplyDelete
  95. See how they held that triple split and let them all race off?

    How hard was that?

    ReplyDelete
  96. JD,
Don't the rights to play commercial music cost a lot of money? You said Speed didn't have the budget for another reporter, does that mean they don't have the money for music either?

    ReplyDelete
  97. JD, couldn't they get a report from the Nascar folks in the care center and just report that's he's ok?

    ReplyDelete
  98. SPEED has an agreement, but ESPN actually bought the rights to a music theme when they first started. Six figures.

That is why it's so strange to hear ESPN playing random oldies into break OVERTOP of the green flag racing sounds...

    ReplyDelete
  99. Bring back the Castrol Danger commercials please. "How far'd I go?"

    This dipstick is gross.

    ReplyDelete
  100. JD - But, they missed the post infield care center interview with Tayler Malsam last week ... And since KRKO-AM doesn't carry the trucks, some of us didn't know if he was ok or not ...

    ReplyDelete
  101. JD,

ESPN paying that much for music is no surprise. For years, The Disney company has thrown away bundles of money on stupid, unimportant stuff for years.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Sorry for my whack grammar there.

    ReplyDelete
  103. @ Chris NY. don't worry, you're among friends. Hey, they're doing a through the field.

    ReplyDelete
  104. How about that for a nice quick field recap?

    ReplyDelete
  105. JD - and the thru the field didn't take a lot of time either. Good job guys!

    ReplyDelete
  106. Sophia,

I know "Think with your Dipstick" may sound a little gutter-minded and perverted, but this isn't as annoying as those stupid commercials run by ABC and FOX.

    Especially those Progressive idiots.

    ReplyDelete
  107. what a revolutionary idea, have your young driver do some trucks before moving up to NW and then, maybe in a year or two a cup race. Ingenious

    ReplyDelete
  108. Hey, Rick mentioning the trucks off the track. JD, you must have gotten through to him.

    ReplyDelete
  109. I think "someone" from a certain network is reading this as we speak ... ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  110. It's an ongoing discussion. I told him to talk with Marty Reid to see how he does it with no sweat.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Rick and Ray read all the TDP comments after every truck race.

Ray yells at me all the time, he is great. Rick is intense as this is his first NASCAR gig.

    ReplyDelete
  112. @ ri88, that's how my boy Marcos did it. Fell in love with him when he started in trucks. All drivers should have to start that way, IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  113. what do you want to bet we never see that camera shot on Sunday from the stands

    ReplyDelete
  114. I can't wait until next year for the new (old) truck rules.

    ReplyDelete
  115. BSPN must not read this. Either that or it falls on deaf ears, like everything else that's based in New York.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Chris in NY

it's also, and ALOT of the WHIPPING sounds that make me cringe on the dipstick commercials...not so much gutter junk though it the gutter fits.. ;-)

Progressive commercial...I no can pull up at the moment in my mental dictionary...maybe that's a good thing...

    ReplyDelete
  117. I hate this truck two stop rule. So time consuming too.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Now, if we could get Rick / Phil / Mikey to say "what" lap the caution came out on ...

That's twice they've come out of commercial only to give us a caution ... after the incident's happened ... and we don't have a clue what lap we're on ...

    ReplyDelete
  119. Hey isn't it a sign of a great broadcast that we are whining ONLY about commercials and not the telecast..not the camera work...not the guys in the booth?

    Priceless!

    ReplyDelete
  120. Mike Helton followed through on what he said on TWIN.

Pit stop rules changed for next season and double file restarts....shootout style!!

    Just love saying that...

    ReplyDelete
  121. Only Mikey would say Uranus. Gotta love him. Some of us do.

    ReplyDelete
  122. That Mikey..such a stinker..but I can remember when we PRONOUNCED that planet in that manner :)

way back when I was a kid...

    ReplyDelete
  123. Six, plus we've missed one green flag. Why don't they give us an update on Benson's status too?

    ReplyDelete
  124. Sophia, there is another forum for commercial ranting. I'm not a member of it, but I like it.

    forums.commercialsihate.com

    ReplyDelete
  125. made the high side work.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Soph, I kind of think that was worth a GF repaly

    ReplyDelete
  127. Great scene in "Futurama":

Professor: We stopped calling it Uranus in the 24th century to stop all those tasteless jokes.

Fry: What do you call it now?

    Professor: Urectum.

    ***

So how's everyone doing tonight? I just woke up from a nap a little while ago. Truck race looks like lots of fun from what I've seen and heard while reading everyone's comments.

SPEED is doing an excellent job, as usual.

    --KarenB

    ReplyDelete
  128. These full screen replays aren't so BSPNish. Better announcing and no mispanned cameras.

    ReplyDelete
  129. complain and ye shall recieve a two box

    ReplyDelete
  130. @ KarenB, YOU are killing me now.

No biggie to me seeing full screen replay since Weed is leading. Sorry David ;).

    ReplyDelete
  131. How come they haven't said anything about the logo/decal on Tayler's hood??

    ReplyDelete
  132. I wished there was a fox trax for the truck series race oh wait I don't even need because speed keeps me inform all the time through out the race.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Working on that for next year too....oops, did I say that?

    ReplyDelete
  134. That is two commercials now for the Nascar Week in Las Vegas. Nothing is said about what is going on>

    ReplyDelete
  135. Digger:

    Go kill yourself already.

    ReplyDelete
  136. @ JD, you're just a wealth of information. We have ways to make you talk.

    ReplyDelete
  137. lol @Dot I can just see your ginning.

    ReplyDelete
  138. I've already seen the 2010 Digger die-cast, and it makes me wanna hurl more than I did this year.

If Lumpy can't get Digger, either Digger should just hang himself or I'll come for that little S.O.B.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Dot - the toothpicks under the fingernails works great I hear.

    ReplyDelete
  140. What? You haven't loaded up on Digger placemats for Xmas?

    ReplyDelete
  141. Why would I? I wouldn't want any.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Get it out of your system tonight KyB. No more wins this weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  143. @ JD

Didn't hear from the Fan Council at all this week, not even the points thingie email.

    My feeling has been hurt.

    --KarenB

    ReplyDelete
  144. So, no Digger cartoon in the Fox pre-race shows next season and fewer animations during the race.

We will see how that goes....

    ReplyDelete
  145. 26 laps to go and not even 200 comments.

    Just like BSPN coverage.
HA! most of these comments have been fun minutia, not criticisms ..well, mine anyway, I can only speak for myself and that one comment the kitten typed about Digger

    ReplyDelete
  146. kb, looks like it was a small email this week...interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Shhh, don't tell JD but, Digger is my secret weapon to get him to talk. I'm going to redecorate his house.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Vicky,

I'd like to pop the heads off those bobbleheads and line them up under his trailer.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Hey JD, I drool during those dream ride commercials so hush. Karen, I LOVE Futurama!

    Here we go....20 to go!

    ReplyDelete
  150. @ JD

There have been a couple of other times I've not been contacted after a race weekend (and those haven't been a Cup off-week).

I've seen no discernible pattern to weeks when they don't send me a survey, though honestly, I haven't been looking hard for one.

    --KarenB

    ReplyDelete
  151. LOL @ Chris. Pent up anger much?

At least his merchandise trailer has been getting less and less people...

    ReplyDelete
  152. Did Larry Mac say Jim Hunter is in the hospital during practice? Doesn't he sometimes do the PR for nascar? Maybe that's why Poston opened his mouth and inserted his foot.

    ReplyDelete
  153. SPEED scheduled until 11.30 my time

    ReplyDelete

"Futurama" is one of my favourite shows. See...we old people can have a send of humour too. :-)

    @ Dot

You could pull a KristaVoda™, redecorating JD's house like she did the set of Wind Tunnel when she filled in for Dave Despain.
