Live Blogging Friday Day Shift From Richmond (ESPN2 - 12PM ET)

Here we go with an all-day affair from Richmond International Raceway on ESPN2. The complete schedule of the day is posted on the left side of this page.

Allen Bestwick, Ray Evernham, Brad Daugherty and Rusty Wallace are the Infield Studio staff. Marty Reid, Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree are up in the TV booth. Dr. Jerry Punch, Jamie Little, Dave Burns and Vince Welch are the pit reporters.

Practice and qualifying is going to be broken up with two NASCAR Now programs. It should be interesting to see how ESPN chooses to lay this day out on the air.

This post will serve to host your comments on the ESPN2 coverage from RIR beginning at noon ET and running through 7PM. There will be a new live blog up for the NNS race tonight. Thanks for taking the time to stop by The Daly Planet.

  1. Happy Friday Planeteers <3

Look forward to some great racing tonight :)

Hope everyone had a great Friday :)

  2. I was just playing around with tickets at the RIR.com site. I fear we are going to see empty seats. Well, they spread them out so maybe we won't notice, but they still had blocks of 10 in 5 of the grandstands for the Cup race, and plenty of others other than the frontstretch.

I haven't been able to find out who's doing the anthem tomorrow--tonight it looks like it's a contest winner. Hopefully a good one. Because of the date, probably tomorrow it'll be someone significant.

  3. ok, two minutes in and i'm so disappointed that i can't be at richmond tomorrow night!

but! at least having to be off work today means i get to watch the coverage.

  4. Well, I won't be watching if Bestwick is on.

  5. great shot of little martin wrenching on the back-up car & wonderful to get an immediate, intelligent explanation from evernham.
we really don't need tim brewer. really we don't. especially when he completely discounts what the driver says he experienced.

  6. is there anyone who doesn't run well at richmond? according to rusty and brad: no.

  7. Did ESPN seriously just promo College Football on ESPN Saturday night? If this doesn't PROVE that they couldn't care less about NASCAR ... I just don't know what does.

  8. The only thing Rusty likes better
than say "I" is calling his own name.

If BS was brass, he could have a
    hundred piece orchestra.

  9. @red--more *hugs* :(

I tune out Captain Obvious and when I've hoped he'd do something intelligent (like after Elliott's Pokeynose wreck) I'm always disappointed. That was my last chance with him, so I've completely given up on him. But I was chatting with a new friend Josh last night and we were saying how Ray should take over. He's actually educational like you're suppose to be!

  11. right about now, i'm wishing the booth was beswick, craven and evernham . . .

  12. Red - I thought you were going to Richmond? Are you OK?

I'm going to have to live vicariously through the blog until I get home this afternoon.

Keep me posted on what's going on, please.

  13. Oh NO! More brake bias from Brewer. This will be the mantra
for the weekend for brakes and cooling. Guess I'll miss my
    dumb down on shocks.

I'm done for this. I'll have more
    fun mowing the yard.

  14. @GinaV24: nope: new health issue hit the fan yesterday. dr has me on stronger, new meds & doesn't want me that far from home in case of reactions. i am seriously bummed but sometimes, i can be smart and do as i'm told. still trying to figure out what all this means going forward, tho. may be related to the continuing inner ear issue, may not. lyme test has been done . . .

as for coverage of practice: so many brewer sightings & @ttiana hasn't been giving us advance warning on twitter; everyone runs well at richmond (even those who don't); 10 lap run averages are interesting -- last one had the 48 followed by the 82!; litttle martin's 2nd lap wreck was scary and again, i wish we had only craven, evernham and bestwick in the booth.

i blame the meds for my nodding off from time to time but then again, maybe not.

  15. I'm thinking you guys are more entertaining than the broadcast (even though I'm at work.) Red, sorry to hear you're not going to make it to Richmond, maybe next time.

I vote for Evernham too, or at least *someone* who's been in the garage a little more recently than Brewer. Knaus would be good but I think he's busy with another gig :)

You know who's been promo-ing ESPN/NASCAR like there's no tomorrow? The Weather channel, of all places. Must be the demographics or something.

  16. GinaV24: think is ent you an email yesterday about my being "black flagged" for richmond. lemme know if it didn't get to you. it was in response to your email about the new arrival in the family.

as for practice: everyone's loose, crew chiefs are saying "wait for tomorrow night," biffle's car has had evrything thrown at it but it's not responsive (altho' rusty states it's because of old tires so i wonder why biff's crew chief didn't think of that) and did you know that bowyer is the only driver with anything to lose tomorrow night?

bowyer still fastest in practice followed by newman, JPM, edwards and reutimann. first session almost over.

  17. oh man, I'm so sorry to hear that, red, since I know you wanted to go.

I hope you feel better -- I have doctor phobia myself!

You guys are my lifeline to all this and I'll bet I'd be yelling at the TV if I were home watching.

GlenC1 -- tires are round and go on the bottom -- did you know that already? LOL

  18. well, that brewer segment was pretty much irrelevant. i mean, nice to hear about the rcr connection but the "discussion" with shane wilson was . . . unenlightening.

    ReplyDelete
  19. lol...I swear last week, Mike Seidel on the Weather Channel said Long Island was a long island and it 'sticks out'....maybe he had 'Breweritis'. But at least he was ad-libbing out on a beach and wasn't doing a planned segment. geez....

veri word--excition. Sounds like something Larry Mac would say.

  20. made up for by a nice piece on nicknames & rusty explaining how he came to be known as "rubberhead."

but once again, i point out that if you give yourself a nickname? that's bogus.yes, i'm looking at YOU, young mr busch.

and kenseth will always be "cheesehead" to me, not "matt the brat."

    ReplyDelete
  21. Red - I'll check that e-mail account -- I got home late last night and didn't turn on the computer. Shower and bed were my priorities.

rusty is "rubberhead", hmmmmI always thought it was bonehead myself and my opinion hasn't changed much over the years.

I agree - you are not allowed to give yourself a nickname, it doesn't count.

My favorite is still Sterling calling Biffle a "bug eyed dummy". No offense to Biffle fans, but it WAS funny.

GlenC1 - yes, that is impressive -- a long island indeed -- go figure, but the again Florida sticks out too!

veri word - sureak -- that's the noise I make when I have to listen too much to Tim Brewer. LOL

  22. Gina, that was one of my all time favorites (and I like Greg too.) I was there for that one; Greg wrecked 'Nigel' at the Glen.

Always kinda liked 'CRusty', myself, lol. Except I like him, just not in the booth.

  29. and fools rush in ...school must be out.

GlenC1 - cRusty works for me. This is a family site so I'll keep the expletives I usually call RW to myself.

    ReplyDelete
  30. GinaV24 & glenc1: i think i knew it was earnhardt sr who nicknamed wallace "rubberhead." i don't think i realized it was after that horrible wreck that nearly killed rusty and when dr jerry actually had to perform cpr on him, tho. he says he came to, seeing earnhardt pulling the windshield off his car and yelling "don't you go dying on me now, rubberhead!"

    classic nascar moment.

    ReplyDelete
  31. red - I think I had heard that story, too, but I didn't remember the nickname part. Friends and rivals all wrapped up in one. No wonder Rusty decided it was time to walk away after Dale died.

    Gives me the shivers sometimes.

  32. As for the Anthem, at Richmond it's usually the Henrico police officer (I think he's a lieutenant) that can sing like an angel. I don't recall anyone else doing it recently, September 11th or no. We here in VA stick with our traditions.

Won't be at my home track - work calls (I'm a 911 dispatcher.)

  33. Marty Reid still thinks we're in Bristol.

    ReplyDelete
  34. red, I hope you feel better soon. I wonder how ratings will be this weekend, seeing it's opening weekend for the NFL? But Nascar should keep it's hopes up for next season. If the NFL has a lockout next year, there will be nothing to watch on Sunday afternoon. And it does look like there will be a job action as evidenced by the silly raised arms by the Vikings and Saints before last night's game. Yeah, solidarity for guys making millions, and wanting more. Sheesh.

    ReplyDelete
  35. LVI56: I think Marty was referring to Bristol, CT...

    ReplyDelete
  36. Terri--we haven't seen him in years. So much for tradition. Maybe not since the ISC bought it from the Sawyers, at least for the Cup racee. Shame, I enjoyed him. In the spring it's been the Marine band for a few years. One year it was Big & Rich, they were awful, I was there for that one.

    I see school's out.

  38. I really wasn't listening too much to cup qualifying but it seemed like they have moved over to the Kyle Busch lovefest! Doesn't look good for tomorrow, it'll be chase, chase and more chase. 51 Year Old Fan you are killing me! Bad news for Texas Terry.

  39. Vicky D, that's 51 yr. fan. Unfortunately; no fortunately, it's
plus a few more for the years old.
Just remember growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional.
    Enjoy the evening!
