Marty Reid is back after calling the Indy 500 for ABC. He steps in with Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree to call the race. Mike Massaro, Jamie Little, Dave Burns and Dr. Jerry Punch are going to cover pit road.
Allen Bestwick has Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty alongside for the pre-race show. Danica Patrick is in the field, as are three Sprint Cup Series drivers who flew from Kansas Speedway after qualifying. Carl Edwards, Brad Keselowski and Kevin Harvick are set to compete with a fading field of Nationwide Series regulars.
The story of this race might begin with the start and park cars. There are at least ten cars currently rumored to be starting and parking, with even more possible. Watch for these cars to drop off quickly and cash in after a long tow to Chicago.
Reid may have to reach into his bag of tricks to make portions of this race exciting. This is going to be especially true if the three Cup drivers go to the front and battle it out among themselves. It is not expected that Danica will play a role in the outcome.
ESPN has been working hard on the telecasts and making strides toward actually following the flow of the racing and not the stories discussed in the pre-race show. This will be especially interesting tonight as there is one group racing for the win and another group racing for the driver's championship of the series.
The track had rain earlier in the day and weather could still be a factor. Chicagoland tends to string-out the field rather quickly on restarts and is a track position race. Long green flag runs are typical of the facility.

ReplyDeleteThis is a standalone race at a track the hosts a Cup race. Can remember this happening years ago at New Hampshire, but it seems very unusual.
We are waiting to see if ESPN talks about the dust-up between Kyle Busch and Richard Childress today after the truck race in Kansas.

ReplyDeleteChip owned Chicago Motor Speedway, a flat 1 mile oval built in Cicero, Il that opened in 1999 with champ car and truck races. ISC and Indianapolis Motor Speedway partnered to build Chicagoland Speedway around the same time Chicago Motor Speedway was opened. Chicagoland got the Cup date obviously. No Cup date combined with the demise of champ car forced Chicago Motor Speedway to be shut down. It was demolished a couple years ago. Indy has since sold their share in this track to ISC, which now owns 100% of Chicagoland Speedway.
ReplyDeleteChicagoland got a second race because the IndyCar series dropped all ISC tracks after last year. ISC wants al their tracks to have 2 events per year. Chicago got a 2nd Nationwide race, The Glen already had the 6 hour, Homestead has a standalone Grand Am race, and Kansas got a 2nd Cup date.

ReplyDeleteKyle Busch was put into a headlock and punched several times by famed team owner Richard Childress before falling to the ground, according to several people with direct knowledge of an altercation that occurred after the Kansas Truck Series race on Saturday.
Busch, who had raced hard with Richard Childress Racing's Joey Coulter late in the event, was confronted by Childress in the garage following the race.
According to several sources, Childress removed his watch and handed it to grandson Austin Dillon before walking up to Busch.
Childress apparently didn't like what he heard from Busch upon speaking with the driver, and the 65-year-old grandfather placed Busch in a headlock and punched him two or three times.
Busch then went to the ground in a defensive position to avoid further injury, but Childress attempted to punch Busch again after he rose.
SPEED's Ray Dunlap reported Busch may have suffered a black eye in the incident.
I love that ESPN has been trying to focus more on Nationwide regulars lately...I just wish they had more to work with.

Hubby & going back and forth so it's hard for me to keep track of everything. Doesn't look like a lot of folks there but I guess the weather kept them away. Kevin's cup crew is there to pit him is that really fair to the NW regulars?

I cheered for Jimmy Spencer when he punched Kurt so I'm staying consistent on this.

You can't tell how fast they are going.

The thing that kills me about Cup drivers being in NE & Truck races is we always keep hearing it's because "they love to race." If that's the case, why don't any of them go run some local short tracks during the week and donate part of their winnings to their fellow competitors and donate the other half to charity...since they love to race so much.

ReplyDeleteI live in NJ and since my brother and I got back into NASCAR we've been working on getting to as many tracks as possible, but if this is what the racing is like at Chicago (and I only have TV to base my decision on) then I surely won't rush out and buy tickets and plan a trip.
Carl Edwards biggest challenge will come from his pit stall? Is that what DJ just said? So in other words, there's no competition out there that can beat him unless they screw up in the pits.

Gina, as much as TV and Nascar bend over backwards to tell us that there are no 'cookie cutter' tracks, these flatter 1 1/2 mile track tend to produce cookie cutter races. The cars string out quickly, clean air and track postition make passing very difficult, and not for the most compelling races.

ReplyDeleteI just went back and read up on what Marty was saying about the Indycar race in Japan. They're running it on the Motegi road course because there's structural damage to the oval from the earthquake earlier this year.

ReplyDeleteSally, I agree. They can talk about how they each have their own characteristics and I'm sure they do to the drivers, but they all APPEAR to be the same and having all the cars spread out makes for little passing and not much side by side racing which equals boring TV.

Gina, I agree....years ago I read that John MacEnroe's parents claimed to have disciplined him when he had a tantrum; took his racket away. If they really had stuck with that, he wouldn't have behaved like he did, imho. There had to have been something lacking in the parenting realm.

ReplyDeleteglenc, your'e probably right. I think one of the things that made 'old' racing seem so much more interesting was the characters that were involved with it. They used to be such rugged individuals (see: Richard Childress) who sounded like a bunch of hicks, but were some of the smartest people with motors and chassis. It wasn't all done by engineers and computers. And most of the drivers could build their own cars. Made it much more interesting, trying to 'out smart' Nascar.

ReplyDeleteI agree. We watch hundreds of races on TV but remember only a few through rose colored glasses. Even then, we remember the special moment and forget the 90% of the race we didn't like.
GlenC1 - I've heard that about McEnroe, too.
ReplyDeleteI recognize that in the "old days" people used to win races by multiple laps sometimes over the whole field, but I do think that the ugly car plus the proliferation of 1.5 mile D shaped ovals and the changes to the multiple changes to the points system has made the racing less compelling. I know my enthusiasm has certainly lessened in recent years. Of course I also know that it J. Gordon suddenly found the magic beans that had him running up front and winning races and championships again, I'd probably be a happier camper about the current state of racing.
If cars are being lapped that means cars are being passed.

Actually about 19 years ago, we went to watch an exhibition race at Texas World Speedway and Darrell Waltrip won by over a lap so it was possible back then but I doubt that could happen now.

ReplyDeleteIt took ESPN about 15 seconds after caution came out to figure out it was in turn 3 and show Ricky's car, then the better part of a minute to put it all together that Ricky was the cause of the caution.
Pitiful.
I think ESPN's problem there was that AB can't actually see the racetrack from his pit studio.

Should mention that the ARCA from Chicago wasn't able to go as scheduled earlier on because of the rain. ARCA was going to televise it on delay here in a few minutes (11pm Eastern). But now they should be able to show it live....if someone is up for some late night racing from Chicagoland. lol

ReplyDeleteI tuned in with less than 20 laps to go. The broadcast did very well to tell me about the fuel mileage situation, but that finish. Marty Reid had no idea where Trevor Bayne was. I didn't notice the finish-line debacle, but he shouldn't be confusing a lapped car with Bayne's.

ReplyDeleteDidnt hear about Marty's mishap till long after the race ended. I listened to MRN's B team cover this race. They didnt screw up the call. They knew what was going on. The thing about MR is that he is terrible at pxp. He is an embarrasment to Nascar racing. Half the time he dont even know what track were at. Youd think somewhere in his life someone would have told him he's just not cut out to be a broadcaster. How anyone with such a small amount of talent can get this far is beyond me, but then again Kevin Conway won rookie of the year last year.

I guess this group didn't learn anything from their indy 500 last lap debacle. Last night's finish was flat out embarrassing. from what I saw marty R wanted to give the win to trevor bayne so badly. He didn't even realize the guy he called trevor bayne was a lapped car. WHAT IS GOING ON WITH ESPN? how come viewers at home know more then the announcers who are at the track. that lapped car didn't even look like trevor bayne's car. WTH is going on at ESPN?

I was at Chicagolast night. If there were 30kin the stands id be surprised. The best races weve had here were the IRL. Iknow how TV must of played it last night but after the rain it was nice just to hear em run. This trackis 10 years old and is as single grooved as it was the first year. Well at least they let us bringin our own beer this year.
