Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series From Kentucky (TNT - 6:30PM ET)
The good news is that the track is a sellout tonight. The bad news is that for those of us watching on TV, full-screen commercials are back.
Kentucky Speedway is an odd duck. Located where few wanted a major speedway, Bruton Smith wound-up buying the place and leveraging one of his own race dates to bring a Sprint Cup Series date to a track that had hosted Nationwide and Truck Series races for over ten years.
Tonight, TNT plays to a packed house. Lindsay Czarniak is up first hosting the Countdown to Green pre-race show. Kyle Petty and Larry McReynolds will be on the TNT Infield Rig with her for the hour show.
Adam Alexander will then pair with Petty and Wally Dallenbach Jr. for the call of the race. Chris Neville, Matt Yocum, Marty Snider and Ralph Sheheen will be handling pit road.
This is a track known for a narrow groove, little passing and fuel mileage races. That makes it a big challenge for TV. Pit strategy, including tires will be a key to the race. Passes for the lead may well happen off pit road.
The number of cautions will feed into the number of double-file restarts. Long green flag periods will make it tough for TV. The producer is going to have to chase the best racing on the track and go after the stories unfolding on pit road.
Kentucky makes good pictures under the lights as ESPN and SPEED have shown over the years of producing NNS and truck races. The challenge is for TNT to make this telecast as memorable as possible by continuing to frame it as a first time opportunity for drivers in the field.
This post will serve to host your comments on the TNT coverage of the Sprint Cup Series race from Kentucky Speedway. To add your TV-related comments, just click on the comments button below. Thanks for stopping by.
Sold out crowd!
ReplyDeleteSold Out crowd and some stuck in traffic.. You rarely see that for a race.. Now days they will need to address traffic issues before next year race..
ReplyDeleteMLB game is tied up in the ninth - good thing race isn't on FOX.

ReplyDeleteHappy Race Night Planeteers :)
ReplyDeleteJust hope everyone gets in before the checkered :(. Saw a tweet that still backed up 16 miles :(
You would think they could use the Tv as a place to tell about traffic updates for people heading to the track. People watching could phone or text their friend that is stuck in the car and let them know what is going on.
ReplyDeletePretty lame of RaceDay.
ReplyDeleteI would think the local radio stations are keeping the people stuck in traffic up to date.
ReplyDeleteGymmie
ReplyDeletebacked up 18 miles NORTH & SOUTH on I-71 to get off at Sparta according to police information on 700WLW radio (NOT to be confused with WLWT Ch 5 tv!)
they said on news 90 minutes ago MANY are not going to see the first part of the race:(
Wow. How many SEATS were added since last year? Wasn't holding this race premature if there were not access roads to handle the added traffic?
Yet others say "folks should've left for the track earlier".
I'm ignorant of this topic but 18 miles SOUNDS HUGE to me 90 minutes before the race.
Good evening folks. Too hot to fish (and that's rare) so I'm here early and planning for an interesting night.
ReplyDeletep.s for greater Cincy folks 1530 AM is carrying the race on free radio. YAY...now, can I get this station in the house without bringing the car into the house :)
ReplyDeleteBut somehow the rules for radio in the area were loosened which I found interesting. Is that Smith or NASCAR?

ReplyDeleteDidn't Bruton have similar problems for the first few Texas races? I recall stories of Terry Labonte signing autographs for fans in cars three hours after the race was over.
ReplyDeleteI'm usually at the very early so my father can score a handicapped space. We make Bristol and Martinsville well before 8:30 am. This year for Darlington I arrived at noon, late by my standards, and almost didn't get a parking space on track property.
Greetings, Planeteers! While I do live in Fontana now, Kentucky is my home state. I am hoping for a great race and telecast today as I greatly fear the unpreparedness of the area for this influx of fans might end up overshadowing the event itself.
ReplyDeleteKoHoso,
ReplyDeleteIn this age of social media, there are lots of folks in the traffic sending updates and pics on Twitter of the chaos.
Highway Patrol is having a meltdown and even closed the main Speedway exit for a while.
I am floored that this entire story was ignored by RaceDay, but that is sometimes what happens when the sanctioning body's TV company produces a show.
Stories that are "negative" are simply ignored. Bad decision.
A lot of the tracks are out in the boonies. The key is to get there early. Walk around, look over the sites and sounds. There's lots to do and see all around the track.
ReplyDeleteJD, I'm not surprised that Race Day did not report on this "negative" story. That's one reason why I don't watch that show any longer.
ReplyDeleteHi everybody -
ReplyDeleteI appreciate TNT taking the extra effort with the added microphones at Kentucky for the "enhanced audio".
I just think for those "new" mics to have a big effect, the booth announcers will have to back off a bit from play by play and color commentary.
For years I've been requesting for all the networks to allow the first lap of the race to be "Nat Sound Only", no booth audio. Last week at Daytona, it happened ! I noticed & I loved it.
With dozens of cameras and 90 microphones, let the pictures and audio tell the story. Having the announcers "go silent" is NOT a bad thing.
Thanks to the production staff at TNT for at the very least attempting to try something new.
But, I have a feeling that to get the full sensation of the audio enhancements tonight, you'll need a "surround sound" style system.
I'll have mine cranked up.
The traffic story was not ignored on RaceDay.
ReplyDeleteBruton Smith had some classic and brutal comments about the traffic and Interstate 71.
The problem should fall on the shoulders of the speedway staff and highway patrol for not being prepared.
You have an interstate that close to the venue.... no excuse for that kind of backup in traffic.
Speedway staff, state troopers and local officials totally unprepared...... uncalled for.
Ken, they sent me tons of press releases about it this week.
ReplyDeleteNo clue why this is such a big deal in the middle of a six race package.
Sometimes, the TNT boys are a little bit different.
Ken, that hardly qualifies as being updated news when the track owner complains about public roads.
ReplyDeleteNice feature on Terry Labonte.
ReplyDeleteTNT just recapped the Nationwide race...are my eyes fooling me?
ReplyDeleteI've missed the Countdown to Green shows until tonight. Is Lindsey always this low key? She seems almost out of it.
ReplyDeleteAudio enhanced. Now thats cool. Ive got a beast of a surround sound so hopefully the announcers wont drown out the cars. Braves game is the 11th so Ill hit up TNT later
ReplyDeleteSure wish I knew what I said wrong to get my first post censored, so I won't do it again. Without knowing, how do I know?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, big thumbs up to TNT for talking about the 1954 race in Kentucky and keeping the history of NASCAR alive. And this is a great example of why their pre-race show puts FOX's to shame.
The traffic situation is exploding on Twitter.
ReplyDeleteTons of NASCAR fans still sitting in traffic not even close to the track. Been creeping for four hours or more.
Competition caution at lap 30 because sessions were rained out.
Talked to the RaceDay producer, he used all the info he had about the traffic deal.
Apparently, not a lot of info floating around from Bruton's folks about that.
About traffic getting to a race track.....
ReplyDeletethree words.....
Take Back Roads !!
Updating traffic issues on SPEED will help nothing. But Bruton Smith put the fault on the terrible Interstate..... fault should fall on him and his staff.
Robbie, Google has been eating posts. Sorry about that.
ReplyDeleteThis sort of traffic debacle happened in the old days at New Hampshire until they widened the state road and made all four lanes go in one direction.
ReplyDeleteIn New Hampshire, they have wrong-way lanes on the interstate near the toll booths south of the track for the traffic heading to and from Boston. You literally drive over the median and go the wrong direction.
ReplyDeleteI live just east of Atlanta and for years I could get to and from Talladega quicker than I could to and from AMS. They added a road, changed the traffic flow and have literally cut hours out of the backup in the last couple of years.
ReplyDeleteBy the way....
ReplyDeleteSince when is a "bumpy" race track OK ??
Its going to be ok until someone gets hurt or two teammates take each other out because of the bumpy race track.
Any other race track with bumps and these drivers are griping.
I like that about Lindsay. I never feel like she's shouting at me or trying too hard. She speaks clearly and not too fast.
ReplyDeleteTraffic sounds awful. You'd have thought Bruton would have someone from Bristol or another track show them what they do (maybe they did and it wasn't enough.) Only race I was at where people didn't all get in for the start was the Mud at the Glen...I forget which year, early 2000's, but the parking lots had large unusable areas because of the aforementioned mud. They had giant tractors pulling people out. They weren't as prepared as they should have been, but at least they had the stuff to try. It sounds like KY just didn't have a clue.
Anyone having audio issues? I keep getting complaints about the levels from viewers.
ReplyDeleteSports is going to be tied up tonight.... Derek Jeter hit #3000 in style, home run at Yankee Stadium :)
ReplyDeleteMaybe one of the race buddy feeds should be a traffic cam.
ReplyDeleteThere appear to be a lot of empty seats for a sold out race. I feel sorry for those still on the road and I understand this is the first Cup race there, but c'mon; Larry Mac just said all the N'Wide and Truck races sold out. How much different can this traffic be from those? Are those already seated the 'veteran' fans, and those on the road attending their first race?
ReplyDeleteJD Chrome keeps eeking out on me...can I post this link here? Guy who's been to lots of races says this traffic jam one of worst ones ever.
ReplyDeletehttp://cincinnati.com/blogs/shiftinggears/2011/07/09/theres-traffic-and-then-there-was-saturday/
From the aerial views.....
ReplyDeletelooks like parking is probably the issue. They werent ready for for 30,000 EXTRA cars, compared to previous event at this race track.
Yea, we know about the traffic, Sophia. Thanks.
ReplyDelete10-4 on Google eating posts, John. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteoldnewenglander, they do that at Richmond too, but they just have a lot of different ways to get in, as does the Glen. Dover seems pretty organized too, but I was never there when it was full. Looking at Goggle maps, it does appear there are some sideroads. I know just about every shortcut to get to the Glen (not all of them are paved, lol.)
ReplyDeleteKen, been on it all day since 10AM. Total infrastructure disaster.
ReplyDeleteGoggle maps...geez.....
ReplyDeleteI meant sideroads into Sparta. Traffic shows red on the Interstate.
Anthem: A-. Did a pretty good job.
ReplyDeleteHeard he has done Reds games before.
ReplyDeleteJD @7:24 Audio on Brighthouse cable during the preshow was all over the place -- On the Tony Stewart interview his mike level was lower than everyone else.
ReplyDeleteSeems to be better now, though.
Nick is a buddy of Jimmie Johnson....and a KY native. I made fun of the boy bands back in the day, but that was very good.
ReplyDeleteIf enough fans miss the beginning of the race due to traffic problems, I wonder how long they will sell out this race?
ReplyDeleteWas that Col. Sanders from KFC back from the dead?
ReplyDeleteAnthem was good.
ReplyDeleteLOVED the nice shot of the jets....more than just 2 seconds like Fox or ESPN do.
Ky looks good on TV!
Can't believe I forgot TNT still had NASCAR.
I'm going to get as tired of comparing 'horsepower' at Kentucky as I am of gambling in Vegas.
ReplyDeleteGovernor did a great command. He sounds like a natural.
ReplyDeleteAdam?
ReplyDeleteSeems funny to me that all parties said that this venue would not be ready for a cup race this year. But then again NASCAR has been saying for years that they didn't want a race to be held there because of over saturation. Just goes to show that if you have enough money you can get whatever you desire.
ReplyDeleteWOW look at that crowd this is going to be AWSOME :)
ReplyDeleteWally looks exhausted already.
ReplyDeleteNascar is too stupid to pick the
ReplyDeleteperson or persons to do the
Anthem.
Who did they pick ? Some
country singer and he sounded like
crap.
But of course Nascar wouldnt have a chance to get somebody famous .. or a group that was famous ...oh no ...only 1000 folks
would have taken the task.
How much more idiocy an
stupidity can there be ? Just
wait for the next race
and Is there a woman driver in
the field. If not ..why did the
person say """ drivers start your
engines ""
So bad there is no hope at all
Oh maybe dummy nascar could have
had a military group from
Kentucky...to sing the anthem.
That would be smart - but nascar
is stupid ..eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek
Anon, don't forget lawyers! That is the reason they are racing at a track without total SAFER Barrier coverage and no access roads.
ReplyDeleteDude, that was Nick Lachey! I have all his CD's!
ReplyDeleteJD -- I was sort of surprised that there was no mention of the years of litigation in any of the pre-race. Another case of ignoring the unfortunate truth.
ReplyDelete'Anon' @ 7:42, each track individually selects who will perform the anthem, not NASCAR.
ReplyDeleteNice way to start the race. No announcers, just let us see it and hear it. Well done TNT.
ReplyDeleteI do believe the tracks and track presidents now "get it" on the Anthem. Has been much better for 2011 than last years debacles.
ReplyDeleteHalf of the race so far has been bumper or in-car cams. If this was FOX you would be tearing it apart!
ReplyDeletecant tell a difference with the "enhanced" audio. Nothing
ReplyDeleteWOW !!!
ReplyDeletewould not have believed it if it hadnt heard that myself !!
Great Stuff !!
ok only 6 laps in an EXCESS BUMPER CAMS :(
ReplyDeleteI thought this was TNT...looks like Fox. Bummer
What happened??
Wow! Great way to start the race. Four full laps with no talking, just the sounds of the race. I hope FOX and ESPN are paying attention.
ReplyDeleteAs for the sound, I have my surround system on, cranked it up, and it was awesome! Well done, TNT.
geez, anon...3 races and 3 very good (and different) anthems, someone finally got it right.
ReplyDeleteYa know, RaceBuddy rocks.
ReplyDelete"...and smokin' hot trophy queens!"
ReplyDeleteOne less.
So far we've only seen one or two cars in a shot mixed with bumper cams. The audio is great, the cameras need some work.
ReplyDeleteSophia, TNT is trying this enhanced audio and they use in-cars during this feature.
ReplyDeleteDo you have the sound up?
9 laps - half of which were bumper cams - 4 of which didn't have a booth - and now a commercial...
ReplyDeleteThis is going to be a long night.
It's almost hard to watch because this track has me really nervous. I can't belive they are racing there.
When am I finally going to remember to hit my mute button when that accursed Samsung Infuse commercial comes on? :-s
ReplyDeleteLike I said, have no idea where this "enhanced audio" deal came from bit it is going to be the theme of the night.
ReplyDeleteGuess boring gas mileage racing is not good enough.
Anon why nervous????
ReplyDeleteTrack is very worthy of a Cup race - Bruton rushed it though - has some work to do. The talk of the week will be TRAFFIC ! Wait until they all try to leave tonight.
ReplyDelete"We'll see darkness before this night is over."
ReplyDeleteYeah, that's pretty much the definition of 'night'.
Sure didn't take long to become a typical 1.5 mile parade-fest.
ReplyDeleteApparently TNT has abandoned those viewers that still have 4:3 sets; that split screen wouldn't be viewable on one.
ReplyDeleteWe need a flow to this madness. We sae Menard get passed, jumped to Denny Hamlin, jumped back to an in-car of the #27.
ReplyDeleteok this is over kill of the in car cam
ReplyDeleteThis will be like Darlington - long night, checkered flag after 11 pm
ReplyDelete7 laps to CC at Lap 30. Also, another COMMERICIAL?
ReplyDeleteWhat is the purpose of that shot of Stewart in the cockpit? Yeah, he's got hands and a lap; we knew that.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, just got word that Shaq will be joining Sir Charles on TNT's NBA pre-game coverage next season.
ReplyDeleteThat is going to be some show!
JD
ReplyDeleteNo did not have sound up. 2 radios (1 Reds & 1 NASCAR) bouncing between 2 stations, and twitter & here. OVERLOAD. HA
but I'd reather see more wide angles to be honest. It's too much of an in car cam fest for me.
back to Mute & Reds Radio for the momento
Isn't it funny that it took a new gimmick to make the booth shut up for a change, huh? :p
ReplyDeleteThen again, commercial breaks every 9 laps isn't much of a trade-off...
Tonight the toys already seem to be the priority. Time for another silent period...and back to commercial.
ReplyDeleteWe've learned nothing about the race so far.
Commercials lap 10 and 23 with 2 "crank it up" segments. Weird start to this broadcast.
ReplyDeleteDarlington, 11? Darlington went till almost midnight if not past.
ReplyDeleteI have to say that if you have the hardware for it, the sound is stunning.
ReplyDeleteJonathan, it's like they don't know what to do after Daytona but they do know there is no passing going on anywhere!
ReplyDeleteOk Im mad. Apparently "enhanced" audio ment that the entire race will be covered with in car cameras. Even with the supposed 40 extra mic's I cant tell a difference between this and any other race. This coverage has been pathetic. Firin up the PRN
ReplyDeleteLet's take a break so we can show you the competition caution and then take another break? :-s
ReplyDeleteI'm not liking all of the time being spent on in-car cams at this point. I have no idea how the race is developing in the back. I guess I had better fire up RaceBuddy and see whether or not Time Warner will let me view it without throttling my bandwidth again.
I'm short the Live Leaderboard tonight, foo bar. So I have to wait till they come back from these incessant commercials? Isn't this just like the Chicagoland race last year? Too many freaking commercials
ReplyDelete'Character bumps' or not, this is going to look like every race on every other 1 1/2 - 2 mile track. Cars spread out single file, fuel mileage most important.
ReplyDeletecompetition caution? why??? they knew the race was gonna get away from them didn't they? i hate this.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the 'ticker' at the top had made it through the field once yet. It was close (34th) then the 'Caution' banner replaced it.
ReplyDeleteI don't care for the "Enhanced sound" Nothing more than a GIANT BUMPER RACE.
ReplyDeleteTNT is now just like FOX IMO :-(
R buddy is just too much to my sports night at moment w listening to Reds nonsense.
Anon, practice and quals rained out. Checking tire wear.
ReplyDeletegeez, why is adam alexandar using that "fake announcer" voice these days? Just call the race.
ReplyDeleteI thought Kyle led the first lap?
ReplyDeleteWTF? Is this an IMAX movie or a race broadcast?
ReplyDeleteNormally the pit reports state the obvious 4 tires and fuel, but I would like to hear about the driver's opinion of the car and changes being made.
This coverage gets an F so far
ReplyDeleteJD--they don't need no stinkin' SAFER Barriers just run where Kyle does & there won't be any issues. Bruton said so hisself *sigh*
ReplyDeleteI liked the natural sound with no announcers :)
Racebuddy is working tonight, hooray! since it appears that all TNT is going to show is in car cameras and commercials.
ReplyDeletefirst time it's worked for me in a while.
I'm running the surround sound tonight - so far, the only change I've noticed from typical broadcasts is that the overall mix isn't as good - i.e. background elements are running too hot in the mix and are swamping the main vocals in L/C/R channels.
ReplyDeleteForget MRN, since I can't get it up here in Jersey. Closest station for me is in Allentown and normally doesn't come in on a regular basis. I'll be watching the telecast end to end.
ReplyDeleteAdam, if you download the "I heart radio" app for free you can listen to any station in the US on your phone.
ReplyDeleteDmo, thanks for that info. Keep us up to date if you hear anything different.
ReplyDeleteTNT:I applaud your innovations in covering races, especially Race Buddy.
ReplyDeleteMany good ideas, but, all ideas don't work.
"Enhanced audio" is not worth all the hated in-car shots.
Keep experimenting, but, with as few in-car shots as possible.

Apps? I have nothing to put them on, another thing to do with the why technology today sucks.
ReplyDeleteBesides I have harder time listening to MRN then I can watching on TV because I like seeing not hearing.
tunein app or tunein.com. Its what I use
ReplyDeleteRegardless of a lack of passing, there's too many bumper cams for my tastes. Who let the FOX into the TNT hen house?
ReplyDeleteAlso...no RaceBuddy for me again due to problems with my ISP so I'm stuck with TNT for live video.
bored now. I'm going to need 5 hr energy tabs to get through this broadcast.
ReplyDeleteLooks like the 'enhanced audio' comes at the expense of having interval times on the ticker.
ReplyDeleteAt least we were updated on pit-road and they held off the audio toys in that segment.
ReplyDeleteTelevised sports is about live pictures, not recorded audio.
ReplyDeleteAfter a week's hype, guess what?? This is still a 1.5 racetrack, which makes for LOUSY TV! And if not for RB, the coverage would suck too-I'm not gonna stay awake for all this...:(
ReplyDeleteI'm getting a little more surround action from my side surround speakers.
ReplyDeleteEverything else is a little more clearer than before.
I think that overall sound quality depends on your system and how it's setup and calibrated
Is this the longest we've gone without a commercial? I'm impressed.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it's me, but I found the voices of Petty,Wally and Larry Mac very annoying. I wish they would just shut up. I haven't heard much about Nick since he and Jessica split up.
ReplyDeleteGINA LOL Yeah a pick me up is needed for tonight
ReplyDeleteAdam, you just had to say something, didn't you??? :-)
ReplyDeleteI havent been this PO'd since the last espn cup race. This stinks. I dont have 1 good thing to say about it. And if I have to see that "inside trax" graphion the screen or Adam Corolla eating spark plugs again Im going to lose it.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea what is going on in this race
ReplyDeleteIf you want to impress me with "enhance audio" DUMP the bumper cams & show the entire pack with the CROWD of cars enhanced sounds.
ReplyDeleteThis is just ANOTHER Excuse for a bumper cam fest.
I miss Mike Wells since was told he went to INDYCAR but they use more bumper cams now too...sigh
I AM enjoying NASCAR out of boombox...wish it were MRN guys but will take this over nuttin'
Enhanced audio does no good when there's TOO MANY COMMERCIAL BREAKS!
ReplyDeleteSince there is not a lot of action on the track, TNT didn't miss much in that audio segment. I guess that's better than announcers talking about nothing.
ReplyDeleteI'm still worried the coverage will fall behind on information if this race stays green & the audio segments get in the way.
Palmetto - I had to write that thing fast before one did happen.
ReplyDeleteGee, I just watch RaceBuddy when something comes on the TV coverage I don't like....
ReplyDeleteI guess TNT has to make up for last week's wide open coverage.
ReplyDeleteGold Star comment of the blog this week.

This just turns TNT into the HATED IN CAR Fox bleeping fest.
Hey, Jonathan. Either that or a REALLY stiff drink. Since I'm home, I'm opting for the drink. It won't interfere with my nap during the race.
ReplyDeleteAnon 8:28 - that's what it seemed like at Chicagoland last year after Daytona.
ReplyDeleteNot all of us have fast enough internet. Plus I pay for HD, Im gonna watch the race in HD
ReplyDeleteThey always come back from commercial with nice wide shots, then slowly the camera shot pulls in, tighter and tighter, It's like the job of getting us to the next commercial break is the main goal.
ReplyDeleteAnybody remember when long green flag runs meant a little goodie we used to call "Through the Field"? I guess that would drown out the in-car mikes.
ReplyDeleteI'm an audio guy through and through; BUT, I think the greatest aural addition they could make to these broadcasts is to carry MRN/PRN on the SAP carrier.
ReplyDeleteReading waaaay back up to Fireman17 and his comment about traffic. Sorry, but you apparently haven't been to a race lately. There are NO tracks that don't have traffic issues. Still. And always have. To me, this is a non-story that TNT has pushed to the front because they have nothing else to talk about.
ReplyDeleteI'm an audio geek too, and I do applaud the audio side of the presentation......but TNT is dropping the ball on everything else.
ReplyDelete@Mike(Detroit) they come back from commercial with on screen advertisements, stay for a minute, then go back to commercial
ReplyDeleteWell, I've switched back to TV speakers and turned the surround system off, since there's nothing new to hear, and the majority of the time was spent listening to commercials in 5.1. Not something I tend to do at all.
ReplyDeleteHey, JD, whadda ya do during the other 30 races?
ReplyDeletewhen is the fake debris caution coming???
ReplyDeleteI wish I could do that JD but Time Warner Cable in Fontana won't allow it no matter which of my computers I use (Linux Mint, Windows 7, or Windows XP). Even my next door neighbor here with TWC also gets throttled if he tries to stream RaceBuddy so it's not just my house or how I have hot-rodded my computers. As for fixing it, TWC has basically pulled a David Hill on us and said, "Tough."
ReplyDeleteBesides, RaceBuddy should be an enhancement, not a replacement...not to mention that we won't have it available once TNT hands off to Mickey Mouse.
GREAT IDEA DMO!
ReplyDeleteJimm57
I was plesantly surprised in last night's NNS race that they spent a fair amount of time showing the middle and further back in the field. Someone in the Truck obviously lost it!
ReplyDeleteAre there any reporters on pit road? Could they maybe tell me if tire pressures are being changed, or wedge in or out?
ReplyDeleteThis is looking & sounding like an arcade game.
ReplyDeleteThis is THE worst coverage EVER of a race.... makes me appreciate ESPN and their commercial/promo festival
ReplyDeletenice yeah Gina im having some Budweisers and have an AMP if I need a pick me up! Hows everything with you??? All is well in Chicago sat outside all day today nice and tan / red lol
ReplyDeleteCheers!!!
Except for Marty, Rusty and Brad I think ESPN did a better job in last night's coverage.
ReplyDeleteSo, the pattern is to let the natural sound happen during the pit stops and then review them later with the pit reporters when the cars are back on the track.
ReplyDeleteThat certainly is....different.
This worked when the field pitted under caution. Now I'm lost.
ReplyDeleteIs the sound out of sync with the images? First we see the pit stops, then we hear about them after the cars are back on the track.
ReplyDeleteIf the majority of mikes are on pit road, TNT has to work on more even mike placement.
ReplyDeleteFull screen replays have got to GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not only do you miss green flag racing, but they take the ticker down and start it over afterwards. Come on man!
ReplyDeleteDMO- That is completely possible. We in the baseball world put many different audio program channels into the broadcast feeds.
ReplyDeletecncspd
This coverage is extremely disappointing. It's like the 'Fox Syndrome' of tight shots and in car/bumper cams has bled into the TNT broadcast.
ReplyDeleteYeah Im not liking this.. at first I thought I would but this is bad! It is nice to see networks try different things but who thought of this???? Honestly if the networks want us to hear the race like were there why dont we just have a couple crank it up or call it sounds of the race... heck call it "Almost as good as being there" segment lol! But this is just bad ah well I like how there trying new things though
ReplyDeleteOne interesting change in the audio tonight is that they are shipping a L/R and Surround channel(s) out of the cars. Every time they take an in-car shot, there is pretty compelling, surround audio with it.
ReplyDeleteJonathan, TNT already did the big show at Daytona. This is all gravy heading out the door.
ReplyDeleteThis gravy is full of lumps. :-(
ReplyDeleteDmo, it maybe compelling audio, but it coming at the expense of camera angles that tell the story of the race.
ReplyDeleteGillilands car owner just reached race...86 laps in via jeff Gluck on Twitter.
ReplyDeleteThis ain't your typical traffic mess for racin'
I agree. Last night's coverage was better. Tonight, they just regurgitate what we've heard a dozen times. They ought to just sit back and wait for something significant to happen....between the commercials that occur every 71 seconds.
ReplyDeleteGood old Rutledge Wood just left the track and reports traffic is still backed up for miles to come in.
ReplyDeleteWhat a freaking mess.
Anonymous Palmetto said...

Agreed completely. But, if I was mixing at the truck, I'd probably be pretty happy with the content I was responsible for. Although, the overall mix sounds like the A1 is sitting with his head buried in the center channel...
terri...I think you need to read the rest of the blog. Many of us have been to races quite recently. It is not normal to be backed up for miles and not making into the race on time.
ReplyDeleteJD yeah I guess but with all the hype around this race you would think they would want a decent broadcast!!! Why didnt TNT try this at Pocono or Michigan??? oh well
ReplyDeleteboo, sun going down & the weak signal carrying the race is getting sputtery & Fuzzy :(
ReplyDeleteBack to Reds & PIP w race since TNT's camera work now STINKS just like FIX & BSPN :( Pains me to say that.
They fixed something that wasn't broken.
Thank god for a through the field!
ReplyDeleteChecked Google traffic...not sure how accurate it is, but it shows red and black (bad) for over five miles in both directions.
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna stop griping about the car parkers at the Glen.
things are good in NJ, Jonathan. A lot of storms the last few days - seemed we had a daily 3 p.m. thunderstorm every day all week long - thought I was in Florida! LOL I'm drinking rum and juice.
ReplyDeleteBut today was gorgeous - nice of it to give us good weather on the weekend.
You be careful getting burnt -- it can be bad for you.
I feel sorry for those stuck in traffic that has to suck! Thats why I always say if im going to a Nascar race im making sure im there 5 6 hours before the race and I enjoy everything the track has to offer im like a kid of Christmas when im at the track lol... And I always let the traffic flow out before I leave... and If I cant do that I dont go just me though my heart goes out to those stuck ive been there before not for Nascar but for the Bears game year ago
ReplyDeleteAll day fans have been coming into this track.
ReplyDeleteWhen race ends they will all leave together.
I find the Tums commercial disturbing
ReplyDeleteThese TUMS commercials are so.....gross. I hate the hotdog on a stick one & the one with Mikey & Reut. Just saw it on pip w no sound but that's enough.
ReplyDeleteThe one on evening news with hotdog was obscene imo.
Those commercials are just.....so wrong.
actually, there have been times I'd have liked to slap Mikey with something, I suppose a rib might have done okay.
ReplyDeleteI saw on twitter someone left from Cincinnati, 41 miles away. 6 hours before the race and in 4 hours they had gone 30 some miles.
ReplyDeleteThat is a bit much.
A lot of good cars like Martin, Newman & Gordon are having a terrible run so far. The viewers are left clueless why they are struggling.
ReplyDeleteTNT suffering from "new toy syndrome" tonight. I hope they tire of it and take it back for a refund tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteok what about the racing on the track??? Feel like this is the pit stop station lol
ReplyDeleteI wish both Waltrips and Rusty were in the booth. If we're not going to hear anyone talk, those are the ones I'd like to not hear.
ReplyDeleteLosing touch with On Track / Green Flag racing during pit stops....VERY BAD.
ReplyDeleteput the leader in a seperate box.
Poor choices.
Were under green and we get enhanced.
ReplyDeleteI could use a caution right now, it would be nice to refresh this race a bit.
ReplyDeleteSplit screen of pit stops???? No coverage of the track while pit stops are going on? That's ridiculous!!!
ReplyDeleteWith that many fans packed into that place, the post race mess will turn the parking areas into one large urinal
ReplyDeleteFor those here not on Twitter, it's still full of reports from people still trying to get to the track. :-(
ReplyDeleteSo...what's the over/under on attendance next year if Bruton and/or the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet don't improve access to the track?
Palmetto - you cracked me up with that one. Thanks.
ReplyDeletemm rum and spice sounds delicious!!! Great to hear your doing good and I love to get all tan in the summer... its hard to sit out when you have work at night mon-fri so I get my tan on Saturday and Sundays... lol well been lucky this and last weekend w races on Saturday nights its perfect
ReplyDeleteYeah - all of us have had something kind of take on a life of it's own around our mouth and it's certainly not pleasant. I can't believe that commercial got past the first review.
ReplyDeleteThis race coverage is terrible. I don't necessarily like the booth but going long stretches without it is very unsettling. Either use the booth or just go the whole race with natural sounds.
Again, this is "enhanced audio" night on TNT.
ReplyDeleteThey are using big chunks of "natural sound" only from the track and keeping the announcers quiet.
Some folks like it because they know the actual race is kinda boring and some folks hate it and want the info as it happens.
According to RaceBuddy, only 20 cars on the lead lap, with more about to get passed. And not even to halfway. Anyone with an over/under on number of laps to a debris caution?
