Live Blogging Truck Series From Bristol (SPEED - 7:30PM)
It's going to be a fun night for the Camping World Truck Series at the Bristol Motor Speedway. The track was slick during qualifying and now a full Whelen Mod race has laid down a different rubber compound. This is going to be a show.
Krista Voda starts off the coverage with The Set-Up pre-race show. Hermie Sadler and Ray Dunlap are the reporters. Once the race is underway it will be Rick Allen, Phil Parsons and Micheal Waltrip calling the action.
Waltrip was working the qualifying earlier in the day and had returned to his overbearing personality. It was tough to listen to him talk overtop of his two booth mates. Let's hope someone whispered in his ear to tone it down for the race.
The director is critical for this race. With short laps and fast action, if the director makes the decision to use tightshots and in-truck cameras, then most of the incidents will be shown on replay and the overall telecast will suffer.
The fact of the matter is that Bristol offers two of the most dynamic highshots in sports TV. One if from on top of the tower and shows the entire track with the cars just whirling around at speed. The second is the aerial shot that is tremendous on restarts and for showing groups of trucks racing in a pack. Let's hope we see those tonight.
A good showing at this track is just what the series needs. It is still reeling from lack of sponsorship and the fact that several top drivers are at home this weekend and without a ride. Some solid racing in primetime on national TV could be just what the doctor ordered to set the series up for the long run to Homestead.

Hey all, trucks are up next!
ReplyDeleteJD > you called the qualifying right on the button, Waltrip was way over the top. Lets see if the video is better in the truck race.
ReplyDeleteHe was sooo good last race. Weird that he was all creepy and over-talking today.
ReplyDeleteHappy Pick 'em Ups racin' Planeteers <3
ReplyDeleteQualifying was awful. They missed the #32 spinning due to an interview. Waltrip wouldn't shut up either.
ReplyDeleteStill weird to me that somehow that brings you a smidge of self respect.
ReplyDeletePretty crummy comment on your life in general.
My GF really thought the cervicks thing was funny. So. +1 on that.
It was sooooo weird. First, SPEED is out to lunch on truck quals which are usually top of the line.
ReplyDeleteThen, the director was totally awful and ruined the Mod race completely.
In my book, 0 for 2 today.
Ooooh, take nothing for granted at Bristol and tonight should be no exception ...trucks will be a spectacle to watch with drivers trying to survive on a track with different rubber ...might well be a skating contest ...if qualifying coverage was any indication, Mikey will be handful again showing no respect for his boothmates or the fans ...we can only hope Rick and the truck can reign him in, so we can enjoy the broadcast
ReplyDeleteO for 2, I agree. No surprise.
ReplyDeleteNot taking any chances. MRNing this thing.
ReplyDeleteoh, no ...that should have been 'rein him in'..he already thinks he reigns over everuy broasdcast
ReplyDeleteHe talked over Parsons as if he wasn't even there.
ReplyDeleteSo nice of the 22 team to put my blogger name on the truck! lol
ReplyDeleteEven a small crowd can make a big noise when Kyle Busch is introduced!
ReplyDeleteGotta love a Wed. Nite race! Krista Voda looks and announces great tonight and should be a part of the future Fox Cup announce team. Humm, how about Krista, Rick, Larry Mac and Mike Joy. Now that would be a treat one day.
ReplyDeleteOh and like Michael says on the new redneck show he is now a part of. "Bless his heart!"
Truck 1 is Paludo and Truck 2 is KB.
ReplyDeleteTime for my favorite track of the year :D
ReplyDeleteAnthem gets an F-. Ewww
ReplyDeleteThat was quite a rendition of the nations song?
ReplyDeleteKyle's hair looks weird...maybe from being a passenger while Sam drives...
ReplyDeleteOUCH. Somewhere in Tennessee, hound dogs are howling. That was not a good anthem.
unfortunately, I have iffy weather in my neck of the woods tonite, so sat blinked alot during the anthem. from what I DID hear, that was a good thing...smh.
ReplyDeleteas steeped in music tradition as the Bristol area is, and they come up with this joker ...gimme a break ...another screw-up screecher for the national anthem
ReplyDeleteThat was awful. At least the driver's kids do it on Sat. night as usual. That is always fun.
ReplyDeletePhil Parsons and Kyle Busch....nice hair!
ReplyDeleteMike seems like he is out of breath already. Just dominates the telecast.
ReplyDeleteI am watching truck #2 on race buddy and I do not hear the scanner. I switched to truck #1 and I can hear their scanner, switched back to truck #2 and still nothing.
ReplyDeleteMust be due to the bad weather they grounded the helicopter. Watching the 2 and the 18 is more fun.
ReplyDeleteCould be KB said no to the radio.
ReplyDeleteI can hear his truck noise but no scanner talk. Maybe he did say no to being heard. I never knew they had a choice.
ReplyDeleteTIGHT TIGHT TIGHT!!! Zoom out!!
ReplyDeleteAnd considering Hornaday has had a horrid season. Wish he had taken his car owner and Busch out with him, then its a fair race.
ReplyDeleteSo according to that stupid commercial, Alan Kulwicki, Awesome Bill, and Gentleman Ned all won championships in the Chase era.
ReplyDeleteSoooo things were going to get better now that Bruton Smiths daughter is in control of SpeedTV.
ReplyDeleteMight as well be watching FOX or ESPN, good tight shots show off those HDTV cameras. To Hell with the racing , bumper cams, single and two car shots show off the HDTV.
Much better. Yea sure.
If SPEED had no incar cams we would have no idea why Hornaday spun.
ReplyDeleteLooks like the Mod race.
ReplyDeleteThese video feeds are totally use less. Who is running the video?
ReplyDeleteRace Buddy Rules.
ReplyDeletethe director even made the aerial camera zoom in.
ReplyDeleteMan, I hope things change in a while. He is missing everything.
ReplyDeleteLooks like FOX all over again.
What is a "GLOB" of trucks?
ReplyDeleteBetween the tight shots and Mikey out of control, I don't know how long I can take this. May have to watch Ghost Hunters for a break.
ReplyDeleteThank you Speed for not using a full screen replay there.
ReplyDeleteJD, I'm thinking Phil is probably just glad to have some hair. Doesn't run in the family.
ReplyDeleteMissed caution. Fail

ReplyDeleteJoyce Davenport was Frank Furiellos girl friend from thr DAs office on Hill Street Blues
ReplyDeleteRace off pit road fail.
ReplyDeletePit reporter said he heard Kyle B. talked so at least they can hear him.
ReplyDeleteBut not on race buddy.
john in chico.....humpy wheeler's daughter patti is at speed ...not bruton smith's daughter.
ReplyDeleteAh. Bristol tempers already. Just like the old days.
ReplyDeleteHello? Can anyone reset the field? Update the race off pit road? Shut Michael up?
ReplyDeleteI guess michael feels he has to fill every second with mlather tonight. what a shame.
ReplyDeletejohn in chico.....humpy wheeler's daughter patti is at speed ...not bruton smith's daughter.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I knew what I wanted to say.
Got one eye on the TV , one eye on Race Buddy and the other.
Never mind...
OUTSTANDING "the retired drivers that are now broadcasters" were not scripted as to what happened in front of them, LOOK OUT THE WINDOW
ReplyDeleteEven the incar cams couldn't save them with that mess.
ReplyDeleteThey were showing a bumper cam when the wreck happened but they did show the wreck on replay.
ReplyDeleteJD
ReplyDeleteOur troll is now posting as Joyce Devenport
"Got one eye on the TV , one eye on Race Buddy and the other.
ReplyDeleteNever mind..."
Had beer shootin out my nose reading that one! Classic! Thanks
I'm watching a NASCAR race and get FOOTBALL commercial on SPEED? Really?
ReplyDeletePit reporter did not see the 88 pit?
ReplyDeleteThey showed him leaving the pits.
Given up on the tv broadcast, just watching TruckBuddy with the TV volume in the background.
ReplyDeleteThey missed the entire 88 thing because the coverage is so tight and focused on the lead.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a FOX kind of night.
I think the entire booth and crew are totally lost. 16 second laps apparently makes their heads spin.
ReplyDeletePhil Look out the window, they have a race going on
ReplyDeleteSince truck #1 is out they switch to another truck and that scanner is not turned on.
ReplyDeleteSo we have both trucks on RaceBuddy without scanners.
"We're building to a big finish".
ReplyDeleteWith more than 100 laps to go.
Wow!!! Hello everyone
ReplyDeleteman oh man that was something
Wow! The Bristol of old is back! As is the Busch of old!
ReplyDeleteLooks like Harvics obsession with eliminating KB has worked.
ReplyDeleteSad
Man, this is just not the kind of racing I like to see. Cheap shots.
ReplyDeleteKyle needs to grow up! I have no respect for that idiot
ReplyDeleteElliott did nothing wrong. Kyle just needs to GTFO & focus on winning a Cup championship.
ReplyDeleteI am so sick of hearing about the new Kyle Busch. He wrecks himself and then dumps Elliott for it. Hes not grown up, hes not matured, hes Kyle Busch, and nothings gonna change that.
ReplyDeleteyup, sure is the new more mature Kyle
ReplyDeleteFrom Brad Keselowski: Wow. Kyle did to Elliot what he did to me in last years nw race.
ReplyDeleteHow many times have we heard Rick say things happen quickly here at Bristol? We know! And way to potentially take out the best truck tonight Kyle Busch!
ReplyDeleteThis is turning into an ARCA race. A 1 truck wreck turns into 5 or more.
ReplyDeleteNow wreck the #2 of Harvick. Why is Kyle Busch not parked for that? Very intentional contact.
ReplyDeleteAdam, NASCAR has a love affair with with Kyle(example: NH nationwide race) so i would be suprised if he was
ReplyDelete@Roadgeek Adam I wish he would. With Harvick gone that means a Cup driver wont win!
ReplyDeleteKyle isn't parked because he has won 100 races, don't you know? He's the darling of Nascar and the TV coverage. They wouldn't dare park him!
ReplyDeleteElliott Sadler is a mediocre driver. He was wrecked for his mediocrity and ignorance rather than his internationalism there. Busch is the king now. Bow down.
ReplyDeleteThe shops of RCR abd KHI are obsessed with beating physicly or with their collective cars or trucks to take out KB.
ReplyDeleteWith 100 laps to go there's always room if the driver uses the brake appropriately. Both Brad and ES coulsd have done the same. KB let both of them know how to control a race car.
@Sally - this is true. No one, including me, would watch NASCAR if a random entry was allowed to willy-nilly, ignorantly drive as aggressively at all times as proved, skilled drivers. If Elliott Sadler doesn't want to brake, and take out the best car, then he can get wrecked. This happens all the time, but because it's Kyle Busch it gets highlighted.
ReplyDeleteHe had the best truck!
@John in Chico - THIS. You are 100% right on buddy.
ReplyDeleteThere are no words.
ReplyDeleteI am surprised that Race Buddy is still using KB for truck #2. He is just sitting there.
ReplyDeleteNo scanners on Race Buddy and that is what I enjoyed about using it.
Charlie, maybe they don't think he is done with his on-track antics yet?
ReplyDeleteMissed with a double shot on Sadler, heading back out to finish it?
Sadler had no idea Busch would move up the track. Busch forced himself into a hole that wasn't there. If Sadler could have used the brakes then Busch could of held his line on the inside.
ReplyDeleteThere you go Sadler wants to hit KB (heard over the radio) in the head when all he had to do was control the truck for a second a drive around him on the next lap.
ReplyDeleteOH, wait he hasn't passsed or beat KB so might as well put him in the wall.
PanWhal...in case you didn't notice, the king is in 30th place. LOL.
ReplyDeleteThis is getting annoying. This race could easily be Jason White's first win, but look who is in front of him, a cheater.
ReplyDeleteI know its ludicrous a bit to say that these cup drivers should be intentionally wrecked. However, what are you going to do otherwise, hope they blow an engine?
So, Sadler was racing kyle too hard? I see.
ReplyDeleteWAY too many commercials. Thank goodness for RaceBuddy.
ReplyDeleteNo surprise the world's worst
ReplyDeletebroadcasting team is the worst
the loudest and with all of that
they have NOT SHUT THEEEEEEEE
HELL up for 3 seconds.
How nice for the fans eh. I
cant forget HOW MANY TIMES they
mention the names of the drivers.
over and over and over again ...
Wow, the dreaded back to back commercial, and it strikes under green at Bristol. Caution is out BTW, the 3rd one theyve missed tonight. They dont even bother come back from commercial early and tell us
ReplyDeleteThere will be no dead air tonight, Mikey's on a roll.
ReplyDeleteIt's a double edged sword, cup drivers in the lower devisions, no other major league does this. But there wouldn't be many people watching in the stands other wise.
ReplyDeleteThe humilation that KB has been putting on Harvic and RCR is over. A proud victory I'm sure for them all.
Can't sweep them (humilate) this week.
Well race buddy keeping the truck #2 on KB didn't really work out. He is out of the truck now.
ReplyDeleteMay I be the first to predict a GWC finish?
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeleteLooks like TruckBuddy will not replace incar #2
ReplyDeleteNASCAR aint gonna tell you. it the trufh aint no lie.
ReplyDelete15 Laps to go.
ReplyDeleteGood grief! Even Bristol has come down to track position and fuel mileage.
ReplyDeleteNice hustle by Ray Dunlap!
ReplyDeleteShouldnt have waved the green
ReplyDeleteAmazing what info a good pit reporter can get when he doesn't just give a play by play ona pit stop. Thus the term 'reporter'.
ReplyDeleteFYI
ReplyDeleteScott Speed is on The Car Show right after this.
They have done a great job of totally ruining the coverage of the racing, but a better job in manufacturing an exciting finish senario.
ReplyDeleteAgree. Never should have waved the green.
ReplyDeleteDo we all understand about banking and fuel pickup now?
ReplyDeleteSally, we really needed Tim Brewer.
ReplyDeleteVICTORY!!!!
ReplyDeleteAh, who'd I beat?
Never mind.
NASCAR fans need a break from Cup drivers. Newman won the mod race, Harvick trucks, most likely a Cupper tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteThis should be an interesting winner interview.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeleteJD, I knew the was some reason Ineede everyone in the booth to explain it at least twice!
ReplyDeleteI just have to say it...without owners like Busch & Harvick, the truck series might have already gone away. I'd rather see regulars win, but new sponsors help keep the thing going.
ReplyDeleteWith all due respect, Nat Wide races Bristol Friday nite. No races tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteBut you're right, probably a cupper will take it Friday
Let's see for Friday:
ReplyDelete18 Kyle Busch
20 Joey Logano
33 Clint Bowyer
38 Kasey Kahne
60 Carl Edwards
64 David Reutimann
Some race.
I was disappointed that Race Buddy did not have a scanner for the #2 Truck. They did for the #1 Truck but once that truck left the race and changed to another #1 Truck that truck did not have a scanner working either.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the cup driver thing and thought that making everyone pick the division in which to earn points but it's not a solution, maybe limiting the number of races outside your chosen division. The rules are the same for everyone but money talks especially in motor racing.
ReplyDeleteDon't know.
Well, that was interesting. Nothing like I thought it would be.
ReplyDeleteFOX-style tight coverage that made us miss most of the racing. Big incident they happened to catch because it involved the leaders.
Now a story that the media can use for the Friday and Saturday races.
Nice to have a Wednesday race, but there will certainly be some folks dragging at work tomorrow.
New column up a bit later tonight.
JD
but there will certainly be some folks dragging at work tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteHu? Sun is still up here. :)
Normal bed time for us... :)
Hehe, I live by the ESPN motto: Only the East Coast matters!
ReplyDeleteI wasn't the least bit impressed with Rick Allen and Waltrip tonight. When cars are turning laps in 16-17 seconds, things are happening quickly all over the track. They seemed to ramble too much
ReplyDeleteit's 10 o'clock...not late on the East coast. I won't be dragging to be at work at 8am.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jimm, forgot today was Wednesday for a while!
ReplyDeleteThe series should die if the same 2-3 Cup drivers participating are the only thing keeping the series alive. In 2004, all but 3 races were won by regulars in this series. Regulars won all but 2 in 2007. Now regulars are 5 for 16 so far this season.
DVR theater finally ended. Coverage was OK except for bundles of commercials in final third of CWTS. Great to hear the "real" Mike Joy and the genuine enthusiasm for Mike, the Doc and Dillner.
ReplyDeleteDo you think they avoid wide shots because TV fears that it is hard to see the numbers from the side or overhead, especially for trucks and modifieds with small roofs/cabs?
I am lucky; somehow I can tune out Michael Waltrip; wish I could do the same for Rusty.
Finally, NASCAR has ZERO credibility if they don't park Kyle for a weekend. He's already in the Chase so that's no factor. To properly pile on, Joe Gibbs has ZERO credibility if he doesn't sit Kyle if NASCAR won't. Did his probation run out?
Excuse me? Harvick fields three trucks in the race, and sends one out to purposely rough up KyBu, and that's Kyle's fault?
ReplyDeleteHarvick won the race only because his team mate wrecked his only competition.
When Ray was interviewing Kyle, he should have been more explicit about the fact that Harvick's team played dirty.
So many commercials they seemed more than the actual truck racing.
ReplyDeleteFinally, NASCAR has ZERO credibility if they don't park Kyle for a weekend.
ReplyDeleteThis type of responce to KB is typical of KB haters. Anything, just anything to park him, for a "Boys having at it" responce to anothers indescretion. That or a complete lack of knowledge of how short track racing is run. It's called a "slide job", if a driver beats (humilates) another driver by getting ahead coming off a turn the driver getting passed either allows the pass or crashes. A slide jobn is SOP on short tracks.
That had been happening for several laps and the humilated driver lost his emotional and car control. Of course KB haters and their respective driver of choice aren't having much fun these days, not winning or beating KB.
One of two things to consider: Learn what a slide job is or line up behind a better driver....
@Michael S.
ReplyDeleteNeed to stay on topic but got to reply...Sadler was not in a KHI truck (no way the GunBrokers get that truck for free). He had Jimmie Johnson's pit crew, so no KHI tie-in there. And if you saw quals, Hornaday couldn't get out of his own way, so his ability to rough-up Kyle never existed.
Kyle runs Elliott out of the groove twice, and the third time, if Kyle's spotter said "clear," then the blame is on the spotter. Sadler had no chance to check up.
Anyway, to Kyle's credit, his was only the third most egregious payback I've seen, the other two being (#1) Carl trying to amputate Jr's left arm at Pocono, and (#2) Carl flipping Brad at Atlanta. Even Dale Sr. rattling Labonte's cage at Bristol falls behind those 3.
I was disappointed in both broadcasts tonight. Mikey seemed to have found his motormouth groove all over again and the camera work was all over the place.
ReplyDeleteAnd I don't believe a cup pit crew should be pitting a truck series truck even if it's owned by a mega-team Nascar owner. It's giving the little non-sponsored guy a harder time just trying to finish a race let alone a top 15.
ReplyDelete
