Primetime NASCAR Racing On ABC Saturday Night

As someone famous once said, "it's time to make the donuts." The Friday night support race is over, the talking head TV shows are winding-down and fans across the nation are tuning-in. It's Saturday night at 7PM and the pressure is on.

No race in the remainder of The Chase will get the hype and media attention of the Charlotte night race. The Musco lights make for pretty TV pictures and the track makes for tough racing and tight tempers. Casual fans surfing through the channels will stop when they see NASCAR racing at full speed on ABC. The big question is, will they stay?

All season long the NASCAR on ESPN group has been working with one goal in mind. That is the final ten Sprint Cup Series races of the year. Now, after the early stories of The Chase have begun to fade, it is once again time for the racing to return to the intensity that old-time fans used to know so well.

This is the best combination of ingredients that ESPN has enjoyed before a race all year. A fight in the garage, a bunch of drivers racing to keep their rides and a track that reaches up at the worst possible moment and claims numerous victims.

Dr. Jerry Punch is going to have to step-it-up to serve the broader mainstream audience of a Saturday night. Key to his success is going to be the intensity of Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree. Alongside of Punch in the announce booth until well after midnight on Friday, these two analysts are going to be the real face of the ESPN coverage to TV viewers.

Hustling on pit road the four ESPN pit reporters are going to be facing three challenges. One, the story of the race. Two, the story of The Chase. Three, this is the backyard of every team and no one wants to get pushed around on their home field. NASCAR politics are going to be pushed aside and intensity is going to be on display from the green flag. One bad or ill-prepared question from a pit reporter might get a very direct response.

Setting the table will be Allen Bestwick, Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty from the Infield Pit Studio. Bestwick has been steady and solid this season. Wallace has been himself and seems to enjoy his role as a commentator instead of an analyst. Daugherty has been the dependable cheerleader and NASCAR supporter.

Viewers of the Saturday night Nationwide Series race saw ESPN strip-down the telecast and put the bells-and-whistles on the shelf. The result was limited interruptions from Tim Brewer in the Tech Center. Bestwick was often heard but not seen and Wallace and Daugherty faded quickly into the background under the green flag.

The Director laid-off the bumper cams and used the in-car cameras only when they made sense. The low angle "speed shots" are great at LMS, and ESPN is famous for cranking the audio as the cars roar by. Fighting the tendency of the camera guys to zoom-in and show one or two cars instead of groups will be key. Also, look to see if the cameras frame the track and let the cars race in or if the coverage just keeps the same "camera loop" going under green.

This post will serve to host your TV-related comments about the Sprint Cup Series race from Lowe's Motor Speedway on ABC. To add your opinion, just click on the COMMENTS button below and follow the easy instructions. The rules for posting are located on the right side of the main page. I set here each week and just read all the comments as I watch the race. My question to the broadcast is, "Why haven't you mentioned the 29, 17, 11"?

instead of updating the situation on the track after pit stops, ESPN updates what's happening in other sports on other channels instead. nice.

did anyone see Shannon in the infield before the race when Hermie was interviewing someone on race day? She looked like a rediculose smerf in her ESPN fire suite and no one seemed to want to talk to her. Very sad. I feel bad for her in a way. It is clear to me that she has improved about as far as she is going to.

Last night when they were doing a through the field the difference between her abilaties and those of Jamie were in stark contrast. Jamie has made me a believer in her ability to get it right next season. Shannon needs to find a new job.

Bad on the IRL races ... Even worse on NASCAR races ...

The Loose Wheel said...

I fully agree Tracy. I honestly feel they could do just fine with 3 pit reporters instead of 4. If they were to replace Shannon, I'd like to see Bestwick get down there if they are hellbent to keep JP in the booth. I imagine Alan would shine in a pit reporter role and also continue doing the pre-race much as NBC used Weber early in their coverage and how ESPN used Weber in the first generation of their coverage

The Loose Wheel said...

Ax the infield studio. It honestly doesn't have any use during the race at all. Its merely a rip-off of FOX's concept they started in 2001 that EVERY network seems infatuated to follow with. None have been able to do it as well as FOX who gets away with 2 people instead of 3 or more.

Put AB in the booth, JP down on pit road and replace Spake with JP. 7 people could cover a race as well as you could with the 10 your using now.

You'd think Biffle moving up two spots would be important to cover, seeing how he would be the only driver within 100 of Johnson if he can stay in the Top 5.

Yet, not only did they skip talking about or showing Biffle pass Kyle Busch for 3rd, they then went to commercial and we miss Biffle pass Johnson for 2nd.

After all this, Biffle would actually GAIN on JJ, and it doesn't matter to ESPN.

Vicky D said...

Poor Matt. Can't get a break this year.

Anonymous said...

ok kiteman. part of the production process includes deciding what music to play during a broadcast. in some cases, like with Monday Night Football, they even sign a marketing deal to play music from the new Bond movie during the broadcast. it's about 5-10 seconds coming back from break and 5-10 seconds before going to commercials, but it's a production decision nonetheless.

if you were paying attention to the race last year, you may remember Denny Hamlin smashing the wall, being taken to the hospital and off the track in an ambulance, and ESPN showing it while going to break while blasting a rock track. Not a great decision.

The blog is about the TV aspect of Nascar. And it's part of that.

Dot said...

LMS will put in safer barriers all around now that the golden boys have hit the wall. Plus, they got pork from that bailout BS.

Daly Planet Editor said...

kiteman,

Music is a key element for every TV program. ESPN spent over 200K to buy the Aerosmith tune to make it the theme of the NASCAR on ESPN series.

That crashed and burned.

Last season, they changed to popular music for the casual fan. They brought in lots of music videos and songs like "Shut Up and Drive" and made them theme songs.

That crashed and burned...big time.

Normally, in a sports TV series like this, you would be hearing different tracks of the same type of theme music. Just like college football has theme music on ESPN.

When the green flag is out, music is not usually used because of the sound of the cars on the track at speed.

For some reason a couple of races ago, ESPN just started playing all kinds of random cuts of music.

Are you old enough to remember Born to Run by Springsteen?

First of all, that was last week, not last year, so yes I was paying attention.
Second, what would you have had ESPN play after the Denny accident? Maybe "Angel" by Sarah McLachlan? Oh yeah, that would be appropriate.
Third, if there is no drama or bad circumstance on the track leading to break, what the hell difference does it matter what music they play?

DJ the window monitor again tonight. Now if the pit reporter would shut up when something's going on.

JD. On the JP calling car # and driver thing: Do you think it may have something to do with him lapsing in concentration that for a moment he forgets whose in the car. We've heard him call the wrong drivers out before. For example Mears is driving through the grass and he gets ready to probably say the wrong name then pauses for a moment and say "The #5 car...Casey Mears"

I'm very disappointed if it turns out to be true that Chaser Matt Kenseth will be the only one of the three drivers involved in that crash that gets interviewed. This broadcast has definitely been a huge disappointment after last night's very enjoyable broadcast.

Stricklanfan honey, did you REALLY think last night would carry over to tonights show?

It's been typical ABC?ESPN junk.

Last night was a TOTAL FLUKE.

Especially two hours commercial free but I had so many snack breaks, I didn't know that until YOU pointed out the lack. :)

p.s. how can they have the GOOD HANDS pick of the race with SO many laps to go? ?

Thanks JD, for adding some interesting info about how the in-house music guy in the past.

Remember last year with the rap/hip-hop music? I remember my father-in-law getting mad every time they played that type of music, as if they had no idea who their audience was.

These little details are actually a big deal in production.

Tell ya what, this has been a year on TV that Dale Jarrett is going to remember.

kiteman-

Usual practice is no music when there's a potential injury, same applies to other sports

Dot said...

WOW, those splitters could be dangerous. Boomerang anyone?

Vicky D said...

Maybe there is someone in the booth with the guys and when JP says "Car No. such and such" that person points to the name on a sheet of paper. Also, can a car race in this race without a splitter?

Anon,

ESPN actually bought the worldwide rights to the Aerosmith song, made the video and was going to wrap the NASCAR coverage around that tune.

I just wonder what the total cost was of that debacle?
