Sprint Cup Series From Atlanta on ABC (1PM ET)

This is a very big week for the entire NASCAR on ESPN TV team. Only Texas, Phoenix and Homestead remain when this Sunday's telecast is over. The weather is perfect, the track is fast and the stories are plentiful.

As usual, it falls to Allen Bestwick to set the table for the fans. Along with Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty, Bestwick is going to work his way through a wide variety of stories from The Chase to the continual speculation about team mergers.

It should be interesting to see if ESPN talks to Marcus Lemonis, the CEO of Camping World and the new seven-year sponsor of the Truck Series. As usual, the challenge for this telecast is to try and strike a balance between The Chasers and the racers.

Bestwick will hand-off to Dr. Jerry Punch at 2PM to get the fans ready for a 2:14PM green flag. Punch will be joined by Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree to call the race from the broadcast booth. Down on pit road will be Shannon Spake, Jamie Little, Dave Burns and Mike Massaro. Tim Brewer will be in the Infield Tech Center.

Punch faces a track that was brutal to tires in the previous race and caused all kinds of trouble for the drivers and teams. Goodyear and their performance will be a major issue once the green flag falls. Mike Massaro has the experience to handle the Goodyear issues and any interviews that may need to be done.

The Truck Series race on Saturday featured high and low groves and the type of run to the finish that this track has become famous for having. With the newly improved Goodyear tires and the COT offering another new combination, this may wind-up being a big story.

Punch will have to call the high-speed action after the restarts until the field gets strung-out and then work hard to keep the fans understanding where the drivers are and how they got there. Hopefully, full field recaps will be standard this week so the problems of the earlier Chase telecasts will fade away.

Tim Brewer may have his hands full this Sunday as this track has proven to break, bend or mutilate many car parts over the years. Brewer has been kind of isolated this season as he is only seen when something needs to be explained. He is really the odd-man out stuck in his own little world of auto supplies.

Fans should look for the triple split on the pit stops and the effective use of the double video boxes throughout the race. The ESPN Director has been very good at keeping the video of the race on the screen under green flag conditions even while doing replays and interviews.

The final lap at this track is always big and how the finish line is handled can add or subtract from the overall telecast. Watching the cars come off the last turn and run down to the line is key and has often resulted in big stories throughout the top ten and beyond.

Keep an eye on the cars that drop out of the race. ESPN has struggled to interview the non-Chasers and this has detracted from the telecasts. Accidents on this track are high-speed and the fans deserve to see and hear from the drivers involved.

@red - Amen - the coverage is awful

I go thru my own field via the leaderboard on FOX. Oh great ESPU, start at 10th. Good grief.

Karen said...

Didn't we go through this a couple months ago:

According to Dictionary.com:

som⋅er⋅sault

–noun
1. an acrobatic movement, either forward or backward, in which the body rolls end over end, making a complete revolution.
2. such a movement performed in the air as part of a dive, tumbling routine, etc.
3. a complete overturn or reversal, as of

Dot said...

Hey, they're going the wrong way. I thought they were going from 10 to 1. Wow.

Anonymous said...

Dot thats why I asked for a complete thru the field. Starting at 10th doesn't count

Charlie said...

You don't suppose that they decided to do through the field, starting with position 11 is because Jimmie Johnson is in 17th place.

Dot said...

@ Jo, if they did that, they would have to mention those two odd wads in the top ten.

Dot said...

@ Charlie, I thought that same thing.

Sophia said...

hi everybody,

well, it's cooler hear and I did a bit of raking and turn on the tv and am clueless...so not really paying much attention but heard about Mikey's helmet radio problem. and saw Kasey's great save.

I see the cup coverage never changes..but nice to have this place to come and kvetch to and get input from all you multi-taskers !...thanks JD.

OT briefly..who won australia IRL race? I forgot about it and was out listening to music or would've taped that. :( I had heard Helio was allowed to attend.

now back to the race....I feel like a nap is coming on as the sun disappears.

Anonymous said...

so what? we got 10 thru 19? hardly a full field recap -- but typical for espn.

Sophia said...

karen

thanks for the somersault thingie...I googled months ago and read it could be forward or backward. :)

I would love to see a non chase, underdog win today.

Anonymous said...

Well said red I can't imagine any other sport putting up with the BS that some at ESPN try to pass as good coverage let alone made up stories about drivers etc.

Dot said...

@ Sophia, Briscoe won last night.

@ Red, ditto.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Wow, after 160 laps a recap of less than ten cars really did not fit the bill for the TV viewers.

Punch is energetic for the football promos but not for the action on the track.

Karen said...

Sophia,

Been missing you around here.

Anonymous said...

and prn finishes yet another full field recap, from leader to riggs at 143+ laps down in 43rd.

again, i note: it can be done.

Dot said...

Odd wad alert. Talking about Kurt B.

Cut away car - heaven forbid we get anything but a 1 car in a box to go with it.

Newracefan said...

Oh Lord this is a nightmare, thanks for the Mikey update but otherwise this is a mess. Oh by the way the 66 is back on track 124 laps down.

Dot said...

Wow, accidental live coverage. Kurt in the wall.

Nice that their race recap for so far all revolves around JJ and how he is effected.

Yet TV has the rundown running all the time in the ticker

Kenseth pitting in four according to Parsons

Charlie said...

Kurt Busch even after hitting the wall is posting some of the fastest speeds on the track.

Karen said...

My odd wad pick now in the top ten is Montoya.

Anonymous said...

anon 4:17: agreed that the ticker gives us postion for all cars in the race BUT what prn does is give a brief insight as to what's happening with each car and then moves on to the next car. no nonsense about this being someone's home track or what happened last week or in practice -- nothing but race-related information. that's especially important on green flag stops.

the point isn't that we don't know who's where: it's that we don't know WHY. and that's one of the elements that espn needs to bring to the broadcast.

The Loose Wheel said...

26 hanging tough.

The Loose Wheel said...

did ESPN EVER talk about riggs taking himself out?

Sophia said...

Dot

Thanks for the info. Karen, nice to be missed. :) I have just been distancing myself from tv coverage except for the trucks and catching the post race shows on SPEED.:)

I am afraid I had "Chase fatigue" before the last 10 races started and ESPN just drove me over the edge with their 'coverage' so I just had to find other stuff to do and watch the post race shows and TWIN. :)

But this is still the main site I come to to find out things and keep in touch.

But the energy in this booth induces sleep.

But it is a beautiful blue sky in Atlanta! I missed the pre-show where Jr commented about lack of fans at the track and more tickets needed to be sold. Zowee!! Bet ESPN wasn't expecting that comment. :)

I love it when drivers are real.

I get the feeling I am just watching cars go in circles and random conversation from the booth...and excess commercials...unless it's the same amount of commercials.

I am still thrilled to find out the TRUCK series is continuing!! :)

@ David No they blamed #19 then nary a word

The Loose Wheel said...

Wingo will be back next year so its been reported. He is still with the 41 team as far as i know

Anonymous said...

They spent 3 laps with a split screen, one with Jr's car and the other with the in-car and talked about a car that was 13th place.

No other racing shown.

Then cut to Kenseth by himself driving around the track.

No racing shown.

I'm seeing a pattern here.

Anonymous said...

@Inkthatpaints I'm not sure but I think that is next year

Nan S said...

Just got home, turned on the race and heard the voice of Ray Evernham. I've now turned the race off and will follow it on the Fox scoreboard and see if I can get it on the radio.

I'll watch the highlights on The Speed Report. ESPN will not get my eyes as long as Evernham is involved.

Newracefan said...

OK while I like the conversation does it really belong in the middle of a race. How about a thru the field first thru 20th and then keep going

You tell 'em DJ.

ok, i concede i may be holding a minority opinion here but: couldn't we save the discussion about what nascar needs to do/not do about tire width or wheel size for sometime after the race? or maybe before it started? while i appreciate the information, i'm not positive why it's taking priority over actually watching and calling this race. ya' know, the one that is happening RIGHT NOW?!?

Poor mikey

Dot said...

"Debris" caution alert. Jr next to go a lap down. Told ya. 55 the debris.

PammH said...

They are doing a little better today. Some guys not in the Chase are almost forcing them to talk about them, because of having good runs, JPM, KuBusch & Mikey. But it drives me nuts when they talk about one driver & show them ONLY for a couple of laps!

Anonymous said...

JR and Tony Jr getting hot with eachother lets hope no body tries to make a big deal of nothing

Anonymous said...

PRN gave us info on the cars pit stops. Quick & concise all the cars. espn zilch info on most cars. world wide leader in what?
not sports info during event thats for sure

The Loose Wheel said...

Im not trashing ESPN to trash them. I remember when they had the NASCAR coverage the first time and it was first class by far. They have become a hype network and have pushed that into NASCAR instead of letting the race tell itself they are trying to dictate the race. Throw out the script, let the race unfold and go from there. They have the people who can do it...DJ and AP have learned the tv ropes and come into their own, the more they script the worse it is.

Anonymous said...

anon @ 4:30: are you seeing a better race on tv than i?

and i have no control over what espn shows/neglects so there's no element of "self-fulfilling prophecy" involved here.

for me, as simply put as i can: espn is doing yet another poor broadcast at the cup level this weekend. i'm trying to provide some examples so that if/when they review the comments here, there's concrete information for them to ponder. and that's what i've tried to do with each network that has handled nascar races.

but i'm weary of it now. and when jd tells us that he hears from espn on monday, then i have to wonder why the "low-hanging fruit" errors aren't corrected in time for the next race.

Newracefan said...

@karen & sophia--in the world of gymnastics when it's done on the floor we refer to it as a 'somersault' when it's done in the air we refer to it as a 'back flip or back tuck' or 'front'. Watch the coverage they *never* use the word somersault when describing a back flip. That's why I cringe when Dr. Jerry says it. "Technically" he's correct, but how it's actually used in the gymnastics world he's not.

Anonymous said...

why would espn want to let the viewers know what's happening??? because they don't show much of the racing for one, and for two, they don't explain why cars are doing what they are doing (why they are performing well, why they are struggling, why they fell a lap down).

I'll assume you weren't serious with your question.

I will handle the trolls, it's just a sign that the race is really boring.

Even with Ray down in the Infield Pit Center, it is amazing that this is the end result.

What a tough day after a good Memphis Nationwide race.

The Loose Wheel said...

Anon. Tell us what ESPN is doing WELL in your eyes?

They showed up, DJ and AP do an awesome job as does Bestwick. Did you watch the NW race yesterday? Reid called the finish with enthusasim, yet you could have a side by side finish and JP would be monotone until it comes to commercial.

ESPN does things well, but there are simple things they dont do well.

What did we do years before the Chase? We told the story of the race, its a 3 horse race for the championship, how different is that then before the chase? So why cover 9 other guys when they are just racing for wins like the other 31 guys out there?

ESPN shouldnt have to cover all 43 cars, I agree with that. but cover the top 15 if you get a long enough green run. Tell us what someone is saying. Is someone worried about tires, does someone have a trick strategy up their sleeve?

Poor Mikey...another tire...sheesh.

As far as Jr and TonyJr...i think Mikey explained it best on TWIN a few weeks ago bout being on the track all alone...your on your own island and that 'button' to your cc is YOUR ONLY OUTLET to 'the world'...there are many things said on there in frustration or just to sound off!!! It often means NOTHING after the race.

I enjoy hearing it for what it is but hate seeing it used as "evidence" or to hype a story where there isn't one...or even if there was one, it's usually worked thru in a couple of days.

So many hugging the edge of the track today.

I understand, I feel I asked this person a valid question though.

What do they feel ESPN is doing right?

Im not here to bash the network, I just feel a change in the production trailer, and moving 1 or 2 people around who have on-air roles would make this network a major player in the world of NASCAR tv coverage. FOX is earning emmys for their NASCAR stuff, ESPN isnt even in the coversation. Enough said.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Yep, I understand. I sure wish they would show us the tires and what is going on.

I was expecting a much more exciting race that I'm getting even with the problems JJ was having. So seems to me it's 100 laps too long.

The Loose Wheel said...

Annon. Thats not what DJ was brought in for though.

His job was to add insight from a driver's view. JP got this job to be the play by play guy. He has zero credibility in speaking of the car and how it acts and why things happen/fail.

DJ has that credibility. JP also needs to engage DJ and AP to showcase that insight rather then DJ and AP engaging each other.

Re: storylines

Been doing some thinking about this. Two thoughts:

-the problem comes from the top. Last week, in an article that was linked from this site, David Poole quoted Brian France: "We want the storylines of the sport to be the focus," France said. "If we do that, we will be successful."

France supporting ESPN, or ESPN following France? You decide.

-good broadcasters know when the story is changing. You go into every event with some stories that you want to follow - but there isn't a single event where some of those stories become non-stories and where new stories pop up. The trick is recognizing when that's happening and adapting your reporting to fit the facts.

This happened all the time when I did basketball in college - I might go in to a game thinking that some record was about to fall and that would be the big story, but the player would have a bad night and a bench player would emerge as the star. Well, change the storyline! A script should be a draft, guide, something flexible. It shouldn't be followed rigidly, unthinkingly.

Good reporting lets the facts shape the stories. It does not, repeat not, force the facts to fit the stories. There is an epidemic of bad journalism in this country, and ESPN's NASCAR coverage is just another symptom. But the problem is not theirs alone; it is systemic.

Anonymous said...

His job was to add insight from a driver's view. JP got this job to be the play by play guy.

But he's shown all season he's incapable of fulfilling that role.

you, sir, have slammed the proverbial nail on the head! is this one piece is attended to by espn, there would be a VAST improvement.

as for dj taing PxP and doc trying color: still not working for me, altho' i, too, am noting the improvement. but what we need is a strong PxP voice.

and thats what we've been saying annon. He cant stay in the booth if he CANT perform his job. Alen Bestwick is sitting in an infield studio fully capable of doing what JP cannot and ESPN fails to recognize this. Best advice I can give is to get involved with your college newspaper and radio station. Cover as many games as you can, in as many sports as you can, and network, network, network. Sports reporting (broadcast and print) was the most fun I ever got paid to have. Just be aware that it can be tough to break into as a full-time gig (which is why I have a "real" job.)

I hope they follow the Montoya story and just do not let it fade.

October 26, 2008 5:38 PM

Story is he came out more than his 1 lane and ran into a chaser!

The Loose Wheel said...

whoa. no full throttle on the restart.

OK - I don't know who they have shading cameras (is Ray Charles still alive?) but they are doing a terrible job today. I realize the light is changing at the track but that is exactly what a camera shader's job is - to keep iris levels as constant as possible... somebody is seriously sleeping in the truck today.

Oh no! Poor Jeff & Juan Pablo was doing so well :(

Anonymous said...

double sucks to be the 42

Sophia said...

crap!! Blaney bad luck again and a bunch taken out as well. Wah...poor JPM...sigh..and others.

Phathead said...

Anyone else catch that fan with his arms in the air cheering as they were wrecking?

whoa. no full throttle on the restart.

yep. i was just coming to say a heartfelt "thank you!" for that! thank you very much.

please, sir, can we have that happen again?

Tracy D said...

So why are we watching JPM walk and not focusing on the 31???

Tracy D said...

What did they do to the 31? Anything?

Jessica said...

Junior says "is that juan walking?" heh

The Loose Wheel said...

"Thank you sir, may I have another?"

Sophia said...

ok...he waved off the cameras but SOMEBODY is still following JPM......sigh...this is such a twist to things....post the ticker please....

CRIPES that's a NOISY LOUD SOUND EFFECT GRAPHIC to mentioned who is in the crash..>ESPN PLEASE lower the volume on that..please nice.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Show us the chaos in the pits and garage please. Instead, we get Bestwick and promos.

bevo said...

Burton channel switching to Hamlin

Anonymous said...

lol ESPN can understand him not wanting to talk but hey they will still have a camera guy follow him in the hopes he says/does something.

Charlie said...

There in search of filler. What to do, what to do.

Dot said...

@ Phathead, yes I saw that. B*ttheads.

Junior says "is that juan walking?" heh

i think my guy's missed the obvious joke there: something about "a dead juan walkin' . . ." comes to mind.

Dot said...

I thought we were going to commls if there were yellows.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Ray, Boris and Massaro on Monday's NASCAR Now.

Anonymous said...

jeff burton didn't really lose a spot, why are they saying they feel bad for him now?

Anonymous said...

oh lord, i so do not want to see these guys right now. can't we spend time in the garage or pits or something? aren't there drivers coming out of infield care to interview? or crew chiefs? or something?!?

Dot said...

@ Red, too funny.

Phathead said...

After today I don't plan on watching any more races on ESPN. I stick to my trackpass and MRN for the rest of the year. I am so completely tired of their crap, I just can't handle it. Since they've taken over I've watched more than a half of a race just once. You can't even have the channel on and watch MRN at the same time because they focus on anything other than the Chasers or whoever is 'cool' at the moment. Pretty sure ESPN is finally pushing me off the edge.

Dave Blaney interveiw .

Anonymous said...

I agree Red 2 studio shots & full screen graphics.

PRN got interviews...espn 1 & junk

dot: we aim to please. humor is all that's left to us now.

Dinger, lead lap gunning for a top 15

Unknown said...

So....many....cautions!

Anonymous said...

Tony got lucky dog, debris?

Charlie said...

Will it be a single file restart?

bevo said...

Johnson taking four tires

bevo said...

charlie-

Yes, that's why Johnson took four

The Loose Wheel said...

single file restart indeed

Anonymous said...

Why does he feel the need to always call Carl Cousin Carl? We get it, we got it a few years ago. Enough.

Newracefan said...

By all means lets see Carl win from several years ago, how about resetting the field

Anonymous said...

Inside 10 to go yes single file restart

PammH said...

Gonna be a very short post-race. It's going to run over as is.

Anonymous said...

DJ even said the debris was out of the racing groove. Is this really what it seams in that NASCAR wants a single file restart so they made one? Maybe that kind of manipulation is a reason there are no fans in the stands,,, Just a thought.

Jessica said...

wait...this race was carl's first win?!?!? I almost forgot. its been at least 20mn since we saw that piece and it was at leas 30mn before that that we saw it for the third time....

Daly Planet Editor said...

OK, I am confused. Who is where and why?

Anonymous said...

Good camera work showing how hard it is for the drivers to see

Newracefan said...

Any guesses how short of a post race we'll get?

bevo said...

Watch out for Johnson flying to the lead

Dot said...

We're running late. Where's the post race show at?

The Loose Wheel said...

top 10 stayed out, everyone back of that pitted for tires

Daly Planet Editor said...

pammmmmmmmmmh,

This is the perfect reason ESPNEWS should be live once the race is over with the ESPN NASCAR team.

Daly Planet Editor said...

SPEED Report will be on at 7PM with live coverage of post-race from Atlanta.

Anonymous said...

If JJ wins I think the broadcast guys will have a collective um..well you fill in the blank lol.

bevo said...

Pemberton is doing a GREAT call on the Johnson channel. ESPN needs to tap in to the feed

Anonymous said...

bevo you mean the regular broadvast isn't the Johnson channel? Hm

Newracefan said...

Holy sh.. now that was fun.

Labbie said...

Albuquerque KOAT 7 just dropped coverage with 8 laps to go for a Local 1st Congressional District US House of Rep political debate.

They said it would be on ESPN2, but that must be on the local cable. I have DishNetwork and am not getting it.

Anyone else have this problem?

bevo said...

Yall should have heard Pemberton, amazing job!!!

Anonymous said...

Fans aren't in the stands because of the economy of the cost of tickets. Plain and simple.

The debris was in the racing groove then got knocked down to the apron after the caution.

Unknown said...

PRN called that with more enthusiasm than I've heard from ESPN all year.

bevo said...

Class move, Johnson just went down to Hamlin to pat him on the back

Anonymous said...

Almost a bittersweet win. Seeing Johnson move from 11th to 2nd cut all of Edwards points and it was the most excited I've ever heard Punch at the end of the race...for his 2nd place call.

He couldn't settle in with his usual boring call at the finish.

Daly Planet Editor said...

There is a new post up for the ABC coverage of the race today in Atlanta for your comments.
