Live Blogging The Sunday TV From Talladega

Thanks to jayski.com and ESPN for the injured fan information update.

So, here we go! Marty Smith is on NASCAR Now to start the day from the track. Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree flew to Connecticut to appear in the ESPN studios with host Nicole Manske. It's pretty clear that Smith enjoys Talladega.

RaceDay on SPEED is always a party from the big track. John Roberts hosts two hours of chaos that includes Wendy Venturini and Hermie Sadler reporting live from the garage area. This is key to today's show because there is a 30 minute overlap between RaceDay and the NASCAR on Fox telecast. Why this happens each season is unclear.

Chris Myers starts the day for Fox from the Hollywood Hotel. He is joined by Jeff Hammond and Darrell Waltrip for the pre-race show. This extended show is supposed to have several features, including Hammond flying with Carl Edwards. No advance word on the Digger cartoon.

Veteran Mike Joy will call the action from the broadcast booth. He will be joined by Waltrip and Larry McReynolds. On pit road is the best crew on TV with Steve Byrnes, Matt Yocum, Dick Berggren and Krista Voda following the teams and drivers.

The field is full, the weather is great and the crowd is huge. This is a great recipe for Fox to recover from a tough outing in Phoenix. Keep an eye on the caution flag pitstop coverage which has been a problem this season.

This post will serve to host your comments about the Sunday TV from Talladega, including the pre-race shows. To add your TV-related comment, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting.

Thanks for spending your NASCAR Sunday with The Daly Planet.

What's the record for lead changes in a race? This one sure has had a lot.

@bevo: hey! where's the philly love?!?! : )

great: caution flag for debris and we pick up coverage as every car is leaving pit road. and now an at&t race break. if we didn't have to do a race break, we might be able to recap the field as it stands now . . .

it is to laugh!! moyer was awesome: pitched 6 innings and singled. he's a local boy so it's always great to see him have a great outing.
maybe the marlins need another "take your dog to the game" day?

@nrf: you doing cup or the entire weekend at dover?

Less commercial trash in this race. None of the endless reads and sponsor billboards.

But I hate the music on that BK commercial.

NRF, we're planning a daytrip for the friday truck race. we get truck and cup qualifying, n'wide and cup practice and then the trucks race at 5. a great day and the tickets are under $35!

red said...

jd, that bk commercial is just wrong in so many ways.

and i thought the same thing about "the epic battle for 37th" -- but it was still focusing on two of the more elite racers, not the guys struggling for sponsors.

still, a nice touch and shows a sense of humor.

Dot said...

@ JD, I find that comml degrading to everyone. I've read elsewhere that people don't like it.

The king needs to be dethroned.

Newracefan said...

Red the other half has a hard enough time getting off work when we go on vacation so asking for a Friday is near impossible. It will be the 3rd race I've ever been to so I'm still a cup race kind of person, he's seen a lot of races and might not be willing to fight with the boss about the day. That said I am considering it for next year Friday and Sunday if the money turns around

@red-

Yep, that animation when they came back had her waving the checkered flag.

Just struck me as funny when you actually watch it.

Sometimes the final piece of the puzzle is the hardest to get in place. This is certainly the issue with JP and AB.

If ESPN makes the change, they get a breath of fresh air and a new start. If not, same old.

@bevo: missed it completely. i think i've trained my eyes to not look in that lower left corner at any point in the race!

The tough part of this coverage is that the ticker tells the tale for some many fans of the teams not in the front.

This season, Fox refuses to do the types of recaps that SPEED and ESPN offer as a regular part of the telecasts.

Fox offers the Hollywood Hotel racebreak which is just highlights and a commercial.

Arute is shining on the IRL coverage, I am very impressed.

Ken-Michigan said...

Decent coverage so far from FOX.

The Race Breaks take away from the green flag action.

My only comment on the in-car / bumper cams is that, I dont believe there should be successive shots of in-car / bumper cams.

I just dont like to see bumper cam switched to bumper cam to in car shot to another bumper cam.

More excitement to come.... hope the truck stays on their game...many more stories to be told.

bevo said...

Glad you're getting to watch it JD. Only their third race and they look like a well-oiled machine. They do an amazing job. IRL is lucky to have them doing the coverage.

In car camera's yes cool perspective but it disrupts the flow of the race, makes it difficult to get a feel for what is going on, and most of all we are watching racing and then BAM cut to a incar view ad I've got a hood decal and the guy in front so I can not tell what is going on. They are great for replays and occasions views but not to follow the race and we fans want to follow the race.

JD are they still showing the truck race in the morning? I was planning to DVR

red said...

NBaP said...
Hey gang, so for you, why do the in-car camera angles bug you? What are you missing?

speaking for myself: i'm missing seeing the actual racing. the in-car doesn't give enough of a perspective, not like an overhead or side by side can. yes, i can see what the driver (kinda) sees but i want to see what's happening with both cars.

for example, i can watch the other driver's hands, see how straight his car is or whether he's squirrely, gauge how the side draft is effecting the cars, stuff like that. and all that's invisible with an in-car.

in addition, it is simply over-used.

Newracefan said...

Sounds like I need to DVR Speed all day just to be sure, have other stuff I watch at 9, maybe its a rerun

Dot said...

@ dear Sophia, like they talk about them anyway.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Thanks Martin!

NBaP, just scroll back through the comments. In-car cameras were the problem for this telecast last season.

Late in the race, the in-cars increase and we miss any kind of perspective. Cutting between in-cars completely loses the audience in terms of what is being seen on the screen.

ESPN did not do this for the Nationwide race and SPEED did not do this for the ARCA race at this track.

DVR = Mandatory TV equipment.

JD

Sophia said...

if they SHOULD have the truck race, sounds a might confusing the 'real start times'.

:)

darbar said...

I got the following off the Nascar.com website, on the Truck page.

The race will resume where it left off, with Skinner out front followed by Brian Ickler, Matt Crafton, Ron Hornaday and Brian Scott. Hornaday began the race on the pole (lineup).

MRN Radio will resume its coverage at 10:45 a.m. ET; SPEED's TV broadcast will begin at 11 a.m. ET.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Dot, what time is that Eastern?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Thanks Dar, it's usually 10AM local time.

darbar said...

Anybody but the Shrubster, please.

Newracefan said...

Mikey and Reut lost the lead draft, Reut got a spedding penalty, looks like we'll need a caution for them to catch up. Bummer

Martin Vincent said...

Correction, when Speed left the air Saturday evening, they said 10:00am Eastern, but the re-air in the early hours of Sunday said it would resume at 11:00am Eastern.

Also, it looks like someone from Bowyer's team forgot to tell NASCAR they were out for the day, looks doubtful they will come back out so late in the race.

Someone mentioned Jeff Gordon's back issue -- I would be willing to bet that the hard hit at Pocono the year before (I stood in front of the TV set holding my breath waiting to see if I still have a driver to cheer for during that one) and then the big crash in Vegas last year has caused him to have major muscle spasms. Plus, I have to wonder if this POS is so stiff and unadjustable that it makes any pain get worse. I'm speculating based on what he's said -- I'm not an expert or a doctor.

I can't say I'm real interested in this race since my guy is definitely not in it to win it. However, I hate the amount of in car shots they insist on using. I'm listening to the radio and reading your posts.

red said...

bevo said...
@red-

i have no idea. i've never heard of a transponder falling off. my guess is that it "might" have been the camera, not transponder. gievn that we're green again, i guess it's moot -- for now.

GinaV24 said...

The 88's transponder fell off? Then why hasn't NASCAR black flagged him? Oh yeah, that's right, Jr drives the 88! And NASCAR can make this work out anyway they want if he finished even reasonably close to the front.
