Live Blogging The Sprint Cup Series Race In Darlington On Fox

ATTENTION NASCAR TV VIEWERS: NASCAR on Fox coverage will begin on SPEED is you have a baseball game in-progress in your area.

The weather is hot, the track is slick and even the veterans had problems in practice and qualifying. It is Saturday night in Darlington, SC.

Chris Myers leads the NASCAR on Fox gang onto the air at 7PM from the Hollywood Hotel. He will be joined by Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Hammond for the pre-race show.

Update: Driver Jeremy Mayfield has been suspended for violating NASCAR's drug policy as a result of a random drug test that was done after the Richmond race. This should be a big topic on the pre-race show, but NASCAR does not disclose if this is a medication that is on the banned list or a recreational drug associated with illegal drug use.

It will be Mike Joy calling the action once the race coverage is underway. Again this week, Joy worked a very long Friday for SPEED that involved many live hours on the air covering practice and qualifying. Now, he faces the task of keeping the excitement level high on a track that has featured very little passing in the COT.

Waltrip and Larry McReynolds are the Fox analysts while Steve Byrnes, Matt Yocum, Krista Voda and Dick Berggren will cover pit road.

Fox has been struggling under the weight of a very heavy sponsorship load. It will be interesting on an action-packed track like Darlington to see how the frequent commercials and sponsor mentions affect the coverage. Digger will also have a presence, from the pre-race cartoon to the frequent commercial inserts.

This track makes great pictures with the Musco lighting and the low-level cameras really conveying the excitement of the sport and the speed of this track. In-cars are effective, but the action happens so quickly that the Director can easily get burned by lingering on the shot.

Tempers have been running a little short recently on the track, so this is really a potential cocktail for trouble between drivers. Scott Speed did not qualify, so his sponsor put him in the Joe Nemechek machine for an undisclosed amount of cash. This week, the Nemechek car will certainly have enough tires to get beyond he first gas run.

This post will serve to host your comments about the Sprint Cup Series race from Darlington on Fox. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting.

Actually I'm enjoying the race mostly tonight. As I type we get treated to photos of wall from side car cam. Over all its nice to see a good race shown tonight on a rare nite off for me. I have jinxed us & I'm sorry. As I typed the dang bumper cam is back - I'm sorry.

I expect the girl's going to get season tickets for life...just glad she's going to be okay, she's a plucky one...

Nice catch --- not going to commercial when something is happening.

Good call NOT going to commercial when Sam spun

The Sam party is over.

Amazing they stayed with the race.

JD, who's in charge tonight? I want to send a thank you note.

Mayfield got his press release out preety fast!

And one thing we can say for Fox or SPEED guys..we are NOT going to see a Jamie-Jack Roush moment tonight. :)

Anonymous said...

Ask.com isn't the primary sponsor of the 96 tonight...I'm sure that's part of why we're not seeing all those in-race spots some of you seem to can't wait to see. ;-)

bevo said...

Something tells me that Mr. David Hill will not be pleased with this coverage tonight - too much emphasis on the racing :)

Vicky D said...

Even keel broadcast tonight and glad they stayed with the Sam's spin.

Lou said...

Glad they stayed with the caution and not go to commerical. thanks

Dot said...

Anyone notice how that guy in the NASCAR.com comml flies back in his chair? Didn't we talk about that?

@ bevo, so true.

Sams spin was awesome on HD! The shot selection tonight is really good!

Boy, another letdown.

NOTE- Any run outside the top 15 is a letdown to me.

Last weekend, I almost cried 'cause my driver finished a lap down.

JD, I have the distinct impression that Red is not a son. I could be wrong, but from her previous posts, she's female.

ok, granted i was doing someother internet/political work but how did the 24 get a lap down?

and many thanks to everyone for the mike joy recap.

if the producer would just stop with the digger cam and keep those great long shots, i'd be a happy planeteer tonight! i'm hearing lots of names that i haven't heard yet this season, seeing different cars and the script is being held in check.

Anon, you can give us your views on anyone in TV. Just reference them for us and do not call people names.

If you have noticed, I have been all over Fox this season for a lot of troubles.

No favorites here, just conversation. If you want to join that, have at it.

If your talking about the Vickers thing annon, Larry stated he got back on the lead lap, NOT mike joy.

As for Mike's performance tonight, cant really criticize anything too badly.

uhhh, that pit box thing they are using today sucks as bad as the quad pits. triple pits or nothing as far as im concerned.

TexasRaceLady said...

Anon, grow up.

Yes, Mike Joy made an error, but it's easy to do. Trying to read the lap chart and call the racing can't be the easiest job in the world.

"JD, I have the distinct impression that Red is not a son. I could be wrong, but from her previous posts, she's female.

Red, what say you?"

and so ends the social experiment.

and, because i promised myself i would answer the question if asked directly: karen: you are correct. and very perceptive.

the social experiment is, however, still ongoing on other sites for now and is why i never post a photo of myself anywhere nor use any handle other than "red" -- which is my hair color! (and, as i posted on another site: "As much a state of mind as a hair color.")

i'm pondering the difference -- if any -- between how a female race fan is perceived on various sites as compared to how a male is perceived.

it's been interesting.

Interesting..doesnt matter to me but my bad for assuming (know what they say about assume!)

Hamlin around, yellow's out

Daly Planet Editor said...

David,

ESPN has the triple split sponsored. That is what I thought we would see from Fox, but I guess it is a little late in the season for new sales features.

The Loose Wheel said...

That makes sense, but you can always supplement a car that may be pitting in the back half for a car that is in the mid section running well. they've done it before so why we are having that issue now is a little silly. Also, under a caution you have the time to do full recaps of your top guys and even show individual stops if necessary.

Just not a fan of seeing 5 seconds of a pit stop then the race off.

What does that 3D thing show that a replay doesn't? Am I missing something?

Vicky D said...

I liked the animation of what happened to Hamlin & Ragan.

Sophia said...

Ok...shark jump...
alright, guppy jump.

WHY did we see animated cartoon thingie cars instead of a REAL REPLAY re: Max Papis deal?

Just curious.:)

Daly Planet Editor said...

Wow, breaking out the old TV toys! Interesting use huh?

The Loose Wheel said...

I think 3d shows what caused ragan to get the run, and they didnt have a camera covering that area of the track or at least not the full story so they had to resort to 3d.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Man, they even got the old Ask.com thing in without messing up the broadcast.

sophia, did you think it was a bad thing?

Dot said...

I liked the 3D view. I could live with seeing that more often.

What I found distracting in the Fox 3D was that Hamlin's car was leaving a "ghost" imprint of the car on the track about 3 times a second.

Sophia said...

WOW. Giant letters on top of screen for some Terminator movie deal? That's new..but better than LOWER third of screen for DIGGER CHIMES

:)

The Loose Wheel said...

FYI jeff talking about his "students" he is a co owner of the PIT instructional and training school that cranks out alot of crew members for many of the divisions across racing. Red Bull trains there and a few others do too. I think Jeff Gordon is one of the principals in it too.

I didn't see that. I liked the animation. Very clear explanation.

Sophia said...

JD

Just curious why we did not see a replay of the real deal?

If it's a one shot explanation, I am ok. If used a lot, it smells like draft tracker cartoon.

Just being honest.
Only way I can be.:)

TexasRaceLady said...

sophia, we did see the live action -- from car cams.

Daly Planet Editor said...

That is why I am saying it David. Hinton and Craven will be good at explaining it. I would be surprised if Bestwick has not already reached out to Mayfield to be on the show. We shall see.

Hotaru1787 said...

I should be happy for Greg 'cause he's leading, but he's not my no 1.

TDP's whiner- me.

PammH said...

Red-Good job-and fun!! I will not make it up for the entire race, but I still haven't turned on the radio...guess that is a plus for Fox. I will watch it in the morn..then I will be here, reading the rest of the race comments. But from what I've seen, this is a MUCH better racecast from the previous wks. Maybe David Hill is just an ahole for fun...who knows?? ;)

Sophia said...

Ed Hinton on NN Monday?

Rats, may have to break my semi boycott of that show. Ed will get me to TUNE IN.

Only saw it once this year sort of, after Dega race.

bevo said...

@David-

Thanks! Just hope it doesn't become a regular feature

Daly Planet Editor said...

Pammmmmm,

I know its tough to understand, but most of the top TV guys are a tough bunch. Not easy dealing with the announcers, the production folks and all the leagues and their officials.

Lots of Tums in that bunch.

Dot said...

Shouldn't Mayfield lay low until he redeems himself? If he goes on the denial tour, it could blow up in his face. Not saying he's guilty.

I still don't know how to react to the race coverage. I like it. We now need a thru the field.

Karen said...

Red,

Sorry to "out" you. And I just knew you had red hair. Good experiment though. Something in your posts long time ago gave you away. Can't remember what it was.

Daly Planet Editor said...

We have been whacking ESPN around to have a journalist on the Monday shows now that Massaro is gone and a weekday host.

Marty Smith, Ryan McGee or Ed Hinton are fun to watch. They balance the hardcore drivers and crew chiefs ESPN has on staff.

Newracefan said...

I'm thinking Jimmie dumped him

Newracefan said...

Oh my Jimmie didn't dump him but you should hear him and now he's being held for a lap but JJ doesn't know why. Need some camera for this one

Daly Planet Editor said...

Dot, failing the drug test does not mean you are a druggie.

It means you ingested a banned substance. Explaining that might be as easy as a bad cold or something else and taking a substance prescribed by a doc that is on the list.

This is a normal problem in pro sports. Reminder this is the first season of drug testing in NASCAR.

In the PR world, you want to get the info out ASAP.

Anonymous said...

complete miss on the analysis of that wreck. it was the #48 that slowed up. Montoya just slammed the #6. Regan was stuck on the #48's bumper. nothing he could do.

Karen said...

Maybe the announcers and camera peeps are trying to make up for the disjointed race last weekend. Sure is different tonight.

Sophia said...

Not to bring up an old but sad topic, wasn't Tim Richmond banned for using Sudafed in the 80's? So they DID test back then but only when they wanted to I guess.

Did not watch back then but read that a few times.

Hope Jeremy does have a good explanation.

Newracefan said...

@ JD, oh I know that. It would be nice if they could mention the category of drug. There would be a lot less spectulation.

I can't imagine Jeremy jeopardizing his name and career. Maybe this is blown up way out of proportion.

karen: not to worry. part of the experiment was to watch how long it would take b/c i knew someone would eventually ask outright. i never changed the way i "speak" when i posted so whatever it was that you picked up on is just who i am!

david: it's been my experience that the majority of female fans tend to be personality-driven fans and make no excuses for that tendency. male fans tend to position as "gear head" oriented but appear to be equally driven by the personality of their driver -- altho' they generally won't admit to it outright.

i have also found that male fans respect anyone who is what they consider a "hardcore fan," generally meaning someone who has a sense of history and the technologies involved. many female fans seem perplexed or put off by the science of the sport. and they rarely allow any criticism of their driver without somehow using the "real fan" expressions!

as for stubborn? my husband would second THAT perception of this female fan!

sophia: no problem with making an assumption. my goal was to determine if i could perceive a difference in how my input is received. so it was an intentional vagueness on my part.

lou: you are a man to be trusted. i had no such concern nor would it have mattered to me. but thanks for playing along!

bevo: i simply do not understand bovines . . . or any farm animal, for that matter. didn't see a cow until i was 21.

all planeteers: i have to say that this site is the SOLE place where the gender of the poster was irrelevant and all are treated as diehard fans. and for any generalization i've stated, the planeteers are the exceptions! 'tis a rare, rare thing that's been built here and much of the credit goes to jd for active moderation and a focus on the issue, not the driver personalities. as a result, we don't degenerate into the banal or childish.

thanks for inadvertently participating and i hope no one is feeling deceived by me! was never my intention.

now, back to darlington!!

Dot said...

@ hotaru. I think you're done now. :(

Vicky D said...

DW says Ragan's car got hurt pretty bad. NO KIDDING.

Newracefan said...

JJ did not get held based on where he restarted, it was hard to tell because Jimmie was screaming and Chad was talking, perhaps it was just a warning but JJ was talking to Nascar (they do not answer of course) that he has no idea what he did wrong. JJ appears to have finally calmed down but the pit crew having problems too so Chad is having a meeting there too. An exciting day all around

The Loose Wheel said...

red, true that.

Thanks,JoJaye. I thought the stands looked pretty full. Last I heard, they had 5000 tickets unsold, so they must have had a good walkup crowd. I confess, I thought about it, but the weekend chores were ignored last weekend while we did Richmond, so...and the back yard looked like a hay field.

The Loose Wheel said...

they have safer walls on the outside. a few years ago there was concern that because they added them that they wouldnt be able to race or pass. i guess they just dont carry them as far off the corner as other tracks. but no track im aware of has safer's down the entire straightaways

west coast kenny: i think that nickname of "big red" comes with the territory. my staff used it frequently over the headsets when they were looking for me in the store as in "anyone seen big red?"

and that 00 is ugly: donuts everywhere, bent metal, missing paint and now just a big piece of junk. poor reut.

Poor Reuts car.

Sanford & Son. :)

great line, Mike.

Kenn, as I have said many times tonight, regardless of the reality Mayfield needs to get his message out right now.

Sponsors always have the right to stop the display of their company or product. How much they may still owe has been the subject of many NASCAR lawsuits over the years.

Best broadcast of the year for Fox.

That was a funny UPS commercial with David Ragan.

Strange race tonight. They should all be like this. The attrition of the usual front runners is amazing.

POSSIBLE NASCAR.com VIRUS ALERT...

I could be wrong here, but wanted to warn, and see if anyone else has had problems, pit command (after raceivew not working) was the only thing I had running at the time, zonealarm freaked out and I got a really nasty rogue antispyware program (bad malware, rated online as a level 5 critical) spent the last hour getting rid of it...

I highly doubt it was nascar.com, but nontheless that was the only thing I had up at the time FWIW

@bevo

I agree about the broadcast. Suddenly I am depressed these guys are leaving soon (though I ALWAYS miss the boys in the booth and pit road on FOX/SPEED)

I gave 'em hello last week but they are really on the ball tonight. Guys in the booth seeing things long before or shortly before cameras do. FUN night.

I have not turned on MRN NOR had the DESIRE to do so.

Kind of nice to actually enjoy the race for once.

I hope the TNT guys are watching.

anon, it's a Turner server. I would suggest running your virus scan after disconnecting from the Internet. Good luck.

Jamie, too bad he was having a good day too. Chad is PO'd at someone but not sure who, might be the 25 (not cooperating with pit stop) and now the 44 too. Chad really not happy, guess that's what happens when you crash on your qualifying lap. I seem to recall him having issues with the 25 and pit stops before you would think HMS teams would cooperate a little better than that.

I'm really enjoying this race, have to catch up on the laptop during commercials because I'm actually watching the TV, even though my drivers are not having good days

marty smith tweets:
