Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series on ESPN From Indy

Note: Please give us your post-race comments on the new column at the top of the page.

Hang on NASCAR fans. 12 announcers and 76 cameras are coming at you live from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It's time for the Brickyard 400 on ESPN.

Last season this was one of the biggest auto racing disasters in recent memory. The Goodyear tire problems unfolded live on global TV. ESPN could do nothing but watch the chaos and try to report the obvious. Now, things have changed.

The foundation of this season's telecast is clearly the incredible recovery of Goodyear from the struggles of last season to being a success this year. No tire problems will return the focus to the racing and the telecast coverage.

The 12 ESPN voices are familiar to NASCAR fans. Allen Bestwick will remain in the infield pit studio during the race. He will be joined there by Brad Daugherty, Rusty Wallace and Ray Evernham. Bestwick should serve to host the race recaps, the video highlights and the coverage under any extended caution flag period.

Jerry Punch is handling the play by play for the race, with Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree alongside. Down on pit road will be Shannon Spake, Jamie Little, Dave Burns and Vince Welch. This is a veteran crew, but this is a very big stage today.

ESPN has a new camera that swoops down pit road at over 80 mph. This angle should be great on restarts and to cover the race off pit road. Look for the ESPN director to try and strike a balance between the in-car cameras and the tremendous amount of cameras positioned around the track.

This is the first Brickyard 400 with the new restart rules and the double-file strategy should make for a new wrinkle. Tire strategy will come into play and the pit reporters are going to be busy keeping fans up to date on what teams are thinking.

This post will serve to host your comments about the ESPN telecast of the Sprint Cup Series race from IMS. To add your TV-related comments, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks for taking time from your weekend to stop by.

raceview isn't loading completely for me --- have cleared the cashe, etc....all things they emailed me to do the last time it froze up...pit comand is loading so at least I can see the spread out field

Robby Gordon held a lap for black flag but radio did not say WHY or I missed it?

Anyone?

bozo said...

like the pit time comparisons including driver time, but wouldn't it be better to compare stewarts time to someone who ended up passing him vice the leader?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Come on Jerry Punch, did you not listen to Marty Reid last night? Get excited!

TexasRaceLady said...

I will stay awake.
I will stay awake.

Maybe if I get up and run around the house it will help.

Newracefan said...

11 back on track. 55 sloooow something obviously wrong

PammH said...

I'm shocked Kryle talked to the media, but he was still basically blaming the 71 for his problem.
Sophia, they rescinded that for Robby.

Newracefan said...

NOOOOOOOO. We do not need Joey in a box. What happened to the 55. Update on Hamlin perhaps. This just SUCKS

Patrick said...

#19 spotter says they're coming back soon. Shouldn't you get this information from ESPN instead of some pre-records BS about Joey? "We've gotta figure out how to squeeze this tape in somehow"

Newracefan said...

Now we get 3 driver bumpers to commercial, Oh joy

IPingUPing said...

Officials channel on pit command say Robby was on the wrong lap, scoring correction, not penalty.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Wow, this got bad....fast. Tell the stories, make the pit reporters work and stop asking DJ and Andy questions!!

Thanks PammH Jeff gluck tweeted about RG...I came in the house but radio guys never mentioned it..sigh

IRL comes on at 5...will watch that..room mate watching F1 now

Dead silence except for car noises there...amazing!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anon 3:44PM,

Agree with you totally, just no profanity on the site please.

Punch cannot lead and this is slowly turning into a zzzzzz fest.

Vicky D said...

good field summary at least.

brad said...

i think we need to face the fact that espn cup races will be horribly disappointing until Doc is replaced in the booth. how can the same network put on the show they did last night think this is good. if they used different production crews and producers maybe they should use them for the cup races from now on.

Charlie said...

Why do a through the field right after a restart when there is more chance of racing to watch. Do through the field when they get strung out.

Anonymous said...

Flipping back and forth between this and F1.... talk about compare and contrast of broadcasts! F1 is delayed broadcast AND they are watching the feed!

PammH said...

I would be totally lost w/out the radio & tweets. Had to mute the TV..:(

MikeC said...

JP is out of material. Doing a 400-mile race is a whole lot different than doing Nationwide events.

Any minute now he should be starting to repeat stats.

Anonymous said...

Did the doctor just say "Juan Monpably Toya?

Daly Planet Editor said...

We tried to get Punch replaced for this season, but all ESPN did was bring in Marty Reid for the final Nationwide Series races.

Even Bestwick would be better in the booth right now. The Producer is also not following the stories, just pointing cameras and following the leaders. Blech...

Ken said...

The commercials are better than the coverage.

Anonymous said...

Have to feel bad that ESPN got this snoozer of a race to kick it off this year. That, plus the understating and underpowered JP and I am off to watch my grass grow.

Unknown said...

in order, the best pxp guys to replace punch would be:
1) jenkins (watch versus tonight and see he's still got it)
2) bestwick
3) reid
4) ANYONE ON EARTH

Anonymous said...

Good thing, Ken.... because there are plenty of those. Nothing like feathering in a few laps of racing between commercials

TexasRaceLady said...

Ken said...
The commercials are better than the coverage.

ROTFL

Sad, but true. To have such excitement last night...........*sigh*

Lisa Hogan said...

Well, looks like ESPN has solved the play by play problem, nobody is doing it. If this is the "new format conversation syle", I will stock up on batteries for the radio!

I feel that I must make a public service announcement:

My visiting Great-Aunt Mary just said, "Humph, I may be forced to go up to their headquarters and jerk a knot in somebody's tail and straighten those boys out!

For Dr. Punch, who loves the age factor, Miss Mary just celebrated her 83rd birthday. :)

rich said...

after what I considered a good pre-race show this production crew is simply blowing it big time. Hopefully the boss is watching this poor show

Anonymous said...

Have to say I'm really disappointed in the race coverage today. I think we got spoiled at ORP last night. I'm falling asleep, all this history and this amazing track and I'm fighting to stay awake!

Yes, it would help if they weren't so spread out but that happens. When it happens I would think ESPN would make even boring racing exciting.

Maybe they need some Tradin Paint - wonder if Mike D can arrange that?

Why did they ever take Doc off pit road anyway? He was better suited huffing it up and down the pits.

Daly Planet Editor said...

I think what makes this weird is that the ORP races were great and that the radio call of the race is also fun to listen to. It is aimed at fans.

Vicky D said...

I guess Marty & company made the telecast look easy last night but I do know that when my nephew did the sports show in Cleveland, it's a lot of hard work to put out a good product for the viewers.

TexasRaceLady said...

Please, spare us the crew cam.

Show us the RACE!

JP must be channeling Rusty --- I did hear him say "hot rod", didn't I?

Martin Vincent said...

Regan Smith is coming back on the track, someone commented earlier he might have been a S&P, but I doubted that very much. Elliott Sadler is still listed as Off, but doesn't look to be coming back out anytime real soon.

Unknown said...

Dear ESPN:

plz document the race.

thnx

GreenMeansGo said...

Man, this race could sure use the "BattleCam" from RaceBuddy!

Karen said...

Cannot get over KyB's attitude change. As Dot said last night, who is that in KyB's suit? Either that Gibbs book is really good or he had a come to Jesus meeting with him.

Kenn Fong said...

J.D.,

Did we just follow the 42 car around the track for 4 laps while he led with no one challenging?

WCK

Anonymous said...

I figure nobody will agree with me but I don't know how this race can be compared to ORP. In case anyone hasn't noticed, there is pretty much zero passing going on in this race anywhere. At ORP you had a short track with multiple grooves. I'm no fan of Punch and ESPN, but sorry, this is a snoozer.

Anonymous said...

It's like I'm on a gameshow set, 21 questions with our contestant Jerry.

bevo said...

I think I've finally figured out the problem. The broadcast has the look and feel of a bunch of people who don't love racing. Just showing up, punching the clock and waiting to go home for dinner.

Newracefan said...

Anon I agree the race is different but showing single cars 90% of the time is the problem. There are cars close enough together to actually be racing each other. Or perhaps some strategy discussion, or why certain cars are where they are or anything

Daly Planet Editor said...

anon 4:07PM,

This is the big time. Following the stories in the pit, in the garage and on the track is something this team cannot do.

They want to follow their own planned and carefully arranged TV broadcast. Recorded radio conversations, recorded driver reactions and single camera shots.

Daly Planet Editor said...

btw, we like all opinions here, that is the way good discussions begin.

Anonymous said...

@VickyD - its hard work to put on a sports show - that is true. It must be harder to put on a live race like this when the on air talent does not care to participate in said event.

BTW lived in Clevland for my first 48 years- sports in Cleveland is tough period, get it wrong & its ugly. :)

bevo said...

Looks like Elliott, Logano and Newman have a pretty good battle going on. They could show us that.

Sophia said...

Lisa Hogan I feel the same way as your great aunt!

came in from outside, watering flowers, looks like qualifying..one car on a big screen or junk over racing.

Then a Pitcam over GF racing. and all these HUGE driver face taped bits.
how about showing us the back of the race, more distant wide shots if nothing else.

Pitiful just pitiful
.. not enough hyping of this show before the race. ZZzzz

I am beginning to agree with Jenna Fryer...not the best place for a NASCAR race

but in all honesty we are seeing it TRULY does not matter who is in the BOOTH of the Camera DIRECTION STINKS. So not looking forward to experiments unless they get Mike Wells back.

back to the radio unless somethin happens to draw me to tv.

GreenMeansGo said...

Yea! Regan Smith back on the track. Hopefully the no DNF streak with continue!

Anonymous said...

I have a problem with people doing anything only half way. It's obvious ESPN is only doing this half way. I don't feel the excitement that I felt last night (yes it was a better "race" but the passion was there). Following a script seems ludicrous in a sport that can change in a blink.

NASCAR has worked hard to be considered a legit sport and the leader in sports coverage is tanking it bad. We didn't get cable when they did their first broadcasting stint, was it this bad then?

Where is Jack Arute? IRL?

Anonymous said...

@Anon 409 - thank you for the perfect answer! ROFLMAO

Mr Editor -
Should #48 wish to pass #83, he'd best use his foot, not the spotter ...IMS radio is remade PRN ...even hear IMS historian Donald Davidson recounting Indy 500 vs Brickyard 400 for laps led, etc ...what?

JD, i'm the 4:07 anon. I know you welcome all opinions here. I've been reading and sometimes posting for three years. That's why I knew alot of the regulars wouldn't agree with me. :>)
Again. I don't like Punch and the ESPN group at all. I just still think its a dull race. That's all.
Cheers.

PammH said...

anon 4:07, it's true, they had alot more to work w/last nite, but there are stories out there that could be told. Hope they mentioned Kryle is back on the track.

Bruce Ciskie said...

I'm not a huge JP fan, but I'm not sure Marty Reid, Mike Joy, or racing's version of Gus Johnson could get us through this muck.

It's just a pathetic show for NASCAR, further evidence that the COT, while a great improvement in safety, has solved nothing when it comes to improving the actual racing.

I can see better racing Sunday nights at the local dirt track. That's sad when you consider that these are the best drivers in the world.

Anonymous said...

Jerry Punch is a narrator---he doesn't have the ability to call or create enthusiasm...

MikeC said...

Typical Punch....out of commercial....."we have 51 laps to go....Montoya, Martin, Johnson, Vickers and Stewart make up the top 5....the defending winner of the race Jimmie Johnson is in 3rd."

Brian said...

Annon @ 4:07, while things are spread out there is some passing going on, its not the big name people so it doesn't surprise me the supposed tv network isn't showing it. Sounds like I won't even need to watch the race when I get home from the track.

Martin Vincent said...

Jerry Punch just said Jeff Gordon is trying to make history by "becoming the 5th winner here at Indy"...

Mr Editor -
At least IMS radio noted those 'out' of the race, vs. 'in the garage' ...no mention of start and park, but were the usual ...expect it's too much to ask that of Doc and cast ...btw, with all the build-up for this race, it's surprising ABC couldn't or wouldn't make room for it on the big network

btw that helmet Pitcam thing gives me vertigo

This race is an embarrassment to NASCAR production.
sorry folks blame Punch all you want...it's LACK of camera work telling more stories in what is looking like a SNOOZEFEST.

I love the commercials that don't stream on IMS..you either get quiet with little engine noise or loud engine noise...NO HUMAN VOICES! Great :)

Why, GOD, why? Do they speculate every damn time an engine blows and show that same tired computer generated representation of a dropped valve. If they insist on using it, why do we need Brewer to point to the monitor????

Anonymous said...

When Jerry doesn't know what else to say he says "if you just joined our coverage".

Martin Vincent said...

@Frank - Apparently, according to ESPN, valve springs are the only things that can blow up an engine.

Anonymous said...

I love how Jr. sneaks in his shots at the powers that be "I thought nascar was going to throw a few more cautions towards the end there..." LOL

Martin Vincent said...

@Anon 4:43pm - What JP really means is "if you just woke up..."

alex said...

"Shut up Montoya or Nasacar will said you did drugs"

His venting over the radio is the most exciting thing I've heard today.

PG_Harley said...

Dale Jr.... "we expect NASCAR to throw a couple more cautions before the end of the race..."

MikeC said...

"If you just joined our coverage"....maybe that's his justification for repeating stuff that he's already brought up.

PG_Harley said...

The questions is... When is Jerry Punch gonna join the broadcast?

Anonymous said...

JPM might want to not take a note from Mayfield. He might want to zip the lip or his rant will get him scored lower than junior with no engine.

TexasRaceLady said...

As much as it stinks, there isn't anything you can do about the speeding penalty.

A person sits at the pit out with a computer. The program automatically highlights anyone breaking the limit.

Johnson wins again at the Brickyard. This win might set the stage for the 4-peat. This might also set the stage for BSPN once again singing their praises towards Johnson and completely taking their focus off the rest of the NASCAR season.

TRL
I KNEW that's what today's director would do.

SHAMEFUL isn't it??

only 3 cars out of 43 finished the race

I'm still having trouble believing this would be an exciting amazing experience if TNT covered the race.
I dislike Punch but even with him I can enjoy an exciting race at a track like Richmond.
But the Brickyard? Sorry, single file shortly after restarts and its boring. A minor bit of excitement at end but as expected the 48 held him off.
Later.

@Holmes - Bill Weber got an early vacation... Anybody seen Ocean's Thirteen? Somebody go to Pocono and sabotage Jerry Punch's room so he flies off the handle at the hotel staff. Of course, he'll be flying off the handle with his monotonous voice, so it might not work... Oh well, it was worth a try!

OK guys, I put up my column early so we could get your comments on the TV coverage of this race.

Please do not leave before you take a moment to go back to the main page and leave us a race comment.

This was a tough one to swallow and your comments may bring some change...which we really need.

Thanks for always helping us out with your NASCAR TV opinions.
