Live Blogging The Sprint Cup Series From Fontana, CA (2:30PM ET on ABC)

Here we go with a race that is wide open. The Saturday Nationwide Series race at the Fontana track sizzled. Now, the big COT's get ready to try and pass on a track known for aero issues.

It will be Allen Bestwick leading the ESPN production team on the air at 2:30PM with a one hour version of NASCAR Countdown. He will be joined by Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty. There are plenty of topics for Bestwick to talk about and hopefully the TV team will try to balance the stories of the race with the stories of the Chase.

Jerry Punch is next with the race coverage. He will take over slightly before the 3:31PM green flag. Punch is going to have a very long day calling the action. This is a 500 mile race and covering all the stories is going to be crucial.

Now in year three, fans are used to watching these races without a true play-by-play call. Instead, Punch offers minimal information, no excitement and begins to lapse into asking questions of his broadcast partners about halfway through these races. Fans still email me about his total silence during the Logano accident two weeks ago. How much longer ESPN will tolerate this remains to be seen.

Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree look and sound like they have had a long season. Jarrett has worked with Punch, Marty Reid and been also asked to handle the play by play alone several times this season. As a result, his formerly crisp and interesting comments are not as well-placed because he holds back.

Andy Petree is the one who has just stepped up and let it fly recently. His ability to step in and point out action on the track that Punch and the producer are missing is key to these telecasts. Petree often calls out the accident location and then fans wait while Punch and the TV cameras try to find it.

Tim Brewer is about out of new things to tell the fans. Saturday, he detailed for fans who have watched the sport since February what a driver has to unbuckle to exit a car. It was painful. Who ever is producing this venue needs to understand fans want knowledge, not repetition.

Shannon Spake, Jamie Little, Dave Burns and Vince Welch are the reporters on pit road. Last week, this team was forced to ask post-race questions to everyone except the security guards as the network had to fill over thirty minutes. Amazingly, once the reporters got away from the questions they were forced to ask by the producers, they did a great job. Hopefully, a lesson learned.

Fontana is rough for tight camera work. It is rough to show the cars racing away from the camera. On the backstretch, only a wideshot shows the pack fanning out to set-up for the passing zone. In-car cameras work best for replays. How much of this is followed and how much is disregarded is about to be seen.

This post is going to host your comments on the ABC presentation of the Sprint Cup Series race from Fontana, CA. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thank you for stopping by The Daly Planet.

Full screen stop for Menard? During the GF?????

Sally said...

Or at least suffering from ADHD.

red said...

and just when i thought it wouldn't get worse: we get a pit stop with a helmet cam during green flag racing.

note: i used "wouldn't get worse," not "COULDN'T get worse."

Is the producer a blindfolded monkey or did someone just give him a football and now he is distracted?

Snarky comments by the Nascar.com leaderboard

"Lap 155

Stop me if you've heard this, but Jimmie Johnson is leading the race. ... If you need to grab another drink or more snacks, feel free to step away."

Jonathan Southside Chicago said...

patrick yes the drinking started way before this broadcast cause I know i need many in me before I can handle this coverage. there killing the best sport in the world!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Full screen pitspots...ugh...

Patrick said...

How elementary is it to use the split screen as a default on green flag pit stops? How about on any/all pit stops? Absolutely absurd.

Anonymous said...

Did you just hear AP and DJ about pee themselves when they saw 2 cars actually racing on tv???? a new concept, show them racing....

Anonymous said...

Why on Earth is Jamie pointing out the wrench ... as if we can't see it ??

Dot said...

@ Patrick, ditto.

Sally said...

Time for a debris caution? field is awfully spread out. Gotta manufacture that 'excitement!'

Patrick said...

#14 too fast, pass through penalty

Daly Planet Editor said...

Stewart speeding under green. Should be interesting to see how they handle that one.

Jonathan Southside of Chicago said...

oh well enough complaining.... So anyone think JPM will winn??? Hey so everyone knows MRN just said Tony Stewart Pit road speeding! Pass through

Beating A Dead Horse said...

How would we know if the racing was good or bad unless we were at the speedway to witness for ourselves. If we rely on ESPN race coverage to make that determination, well, we can't. We don't know about the racing because we don't see enough of it on the television!

kbaskins said...

Johnson is leader by 7.5 seconds. Prepare to nap!

--KarenB

Dot said...

In case you just joined us, #14 too fast exiting.

Newracefan said...

JD how about ignore it totally

Charlie said...

Hi, Just got done watching Golf and thought I would flick the race on but to me it looks like they are showing practice.

Anonymous said...

i can't believe the announcers actually say some of this stuff...."this is a real time clock"

unlike those other time clocks that we use the rest of the day...ARG~~~

red said...

ya' know: there IS racing happening under green flag, even with the 48 running away right now. so when espn chooses to show a timed pitstop for the 48 rather than just tell us about it, i have to wonder if anyone has any idea what they're doing in that truck.

Patrick said...

Thanks, Karen, Can't count on ABC to tell us that. Wouldn't want to spoil the surprise. This is like a horror/suspense movie. Never know what clues you might catch as to what's really going on.

Robby back on the track for the 3rd or 4th time (lost count).

Jonathan SSChicago said...

karen one rule if your a nascar fan no matter how awfull the coverage... Never Never nap cause anything can happen! its not like a baseball game thats 12-0...

Daly Planet Editor said...

I really hope they get some double file restarts and things get interesting.

bevo said...

Shouldn't be too many yellows from here on, Yankees game starts in another hour :)

Jonathan said...

Jr and Busch... wish they would show more of that battle..... Nope we get it for 2 secounds and then back to Jimmie. Jimmie Jimmie Jimmie!!!

Patrick said...

"I hate it when you ask me something I should know, but fell asleep because Jerry was talking"

Why do I watch this stuff said...

MRN get's excited about the 48 lapping the spring winner #17, ESPN goes to commercial.....That says it right there

kbaskins said...

@ Jonathan

Even if something did happen on the track, ESPN wouldn't show it.

Pattie telling Juan to save him a lap of fuel then go race. Next stop will be their last

much more interesting race with the radio guys than the ESPN bunch.

Patrick said...

I wonder when Robby going to just give it up for the day. Back to the garage.

red said...

@jonathan: those 2 have been battling for like 50 laps and it appears to be some of the best, cleanest racing up front -- at least, according to mrn.

sure wish i could see it.

(but remember: the 88's run is a double super secret today so shhhhh! don't tell anyone!)

Jonathan said...

gulp gulp gulp gulp pounding em down and the coverage still sucks. Screw it im going to direct tv hot pass. just hate it cause this tv isnt had and its hard to watch w the split screen

The Loose Wheel said...

So Casey Mears is driving for his career in 10th, have not heard a word.

Anonymous said...

look, they found Digger

Anonymous said...

How about adding another ton or two of weight to the 48 ... so it'll be slow ??

Patrick said...

Junior almost made contact with someone. I only know that because he said WTF and that there was no contact. Don't have any other reference but his radio on this info.

Steve L. said...

I'm having a hard time staying awake with this race. Yesterdays race was so much better with excitement and all.

Jonathan said...

7.178 sec leadans growing wow

dara2K said...

It took ESPN LITERALLY 10 full minutes to call that pit road penalty!! Are you kidding me? You know, some days "I can" and some days I can't. Today..."I can't". Can anyone please tell me why Nascar would ever negotiate another TV contract with ESPN/ABC ever again? What's fan to do?

Anonymous said...

Your car is handling like crap, how is this affecting you today???

Did she really just ask that question?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Wow, even Bestwick can't breathe any life into this one.

Becky said...

When will ESPN/ABC realize that showing a car on the track all by itself is NOT good racing, and zoomed in on that car no less. Grrr ...

red said...

@patrick: word on the internet is that it may have been the 83 that led to the 88's "observation."

Dot said...

26 secs back to 10th. Why is this race so bad compared to yesterday?

Anonymous said...

is this a race or is one car running on the track alone??? LOL No wonder the ratings are down

Anonymous said...

Listening to MRN and catching up on another forum I didn't realize 2 hours had passed.

@Karen--odd I haven't noticed any Silverlight but Dale is older so if yours is newer that could be part of it?

@JD--hmmmm...DTV in trouble? Maybe once I get a TV again I'll hold off and see what it's like Heard about Uverse but would only help me if I got a second TV as the feature that impresses me only helps to have more than one TV.

Patrick said...

Dot,
10 cautions to bunch the field

dara2K said...

Hey, did anyone notice? There's a race between the commercials on ABC/ESPN today?

Anonymous said...

yea ESPN it's pretty fun to watch Jimmie Johnson by himself while he drives away from the field.

PammH said...

OMG, when I finally look at the ticker for standings, they are showing Chase crap!!! Geez, unreal. And every other time I look up, it's JJ on the screen. There HAS to be racing out there somewhere-FIND IT! And SHOW IT! Caution

Anonymous said...

Here's a stat espn's missed ... LOL

How about 7 West Coasters currently in the top 12 ??

Jonathan said...

CAUTION

Jonathan said...

CAUTION

Patrick said...

Caution because someone brushed the wall? Without checking for debris? Officials really wanted this field bunched.

Anonymous said...

debreis caution, not that espn cares

The Loose Wheel said...

debris yellow

red said...

finally! caution flag! infamous debris.

Dot said...

Caution.

Newracefan said...

JJ spotter Caution Debrie. JJ WHERE. Chad 10-4. Show caution anyone

Vicky D said...

Dara - with ESPN it's always - I can't!

Anonymous said...

MRN called the caution live, went to a commercial, came back to there coverage all while ESPN was in one segment of commercials!

bevo said...

So at the end of the season when we choose our "best of" for coverage (pxp, analyst, pit reporters, host) is there any chance that anyone from ESPN will win anything?

Jonathan said...

woooo alright now time for some double file restarts thank god!!!

The Loose Wheel said...

This will set up beautifully the final stop, 2 tires, no tires?

Anonymous said...

I saw this "debris" caution coming when JJ stretched the lead out past 8 seconds.

Patrick said...

Junior, "100 miles too long. bored. I used to get pissed off when people said going around in circles are boring. It has been lately"

The Loose Wheel said...

Montoya and Denny contesting spot, 11 gets the lead by 3 inches per Pattie.

DJ talking about forward bite off pit road? what the heck?!

Jonathan said...

63 laps to go.... Hope everyone enjoys this as much as you can w this espn crap but hey its better than nothing!!! Gotta run for another Budweiser. GO JPM Pass JJ Please I wanna see him win so bad on an oval

Becky said...

So rather than reset the field after pit stops, they do an in race reporter interview. That's it. I've officially given up on ESPN/ABC. MRN/PRN is definitely the way to go.

The Loose Wheel said...

Patrick, Im kind of with Jr, why in the world California gets 2 500 mile races is beyond me. One NEEDS to be cut to 400.

Vicky D said...

I thought Mark was ignoring DJ. And JP who was the lucky dog?

@david and patrick: why fontana needs one race, let alone TWO, is beyond me.

hey! wonder if keselowski caused the 11 to spin there?

Newracefan said...

Jonathan said...

alright now it gets exciting.... Woooo good i hate Denny! UPS BABY!!!

Charlie said...

How many times do we have to say we don't care for full throttle.
And they like it so much they play it right through a wreck.

The Loose Wheel said...

What the hell was that?!

JPM's radio is saying Denny went left. Thats what the replay shows. Wow.

DrTeplisky said...

@bevo--I'd suspect the ESPN crew might be awarded best non-pharmaceutical sleep inducer.

Ann_Ominous said...

Many people say that they should level the high banks at Talledega and make it a BFT (Big Flat Track). I'm not a big fan of rp racing, but I worry that if they did that to 'dega would they just turn it into another Fontana or Pocono? We don't need another one of those!!!!!!

kbaskins said...

Wow. Looks like Denny did that to himself.

--KarenB

The Loose Wheel said...

Well, There goes our car. UPS...LAUGHABLE!

Beating A Dead Horse said...

Hamlin shot himself in the foot on that one. Yannow, alot like ESPN does every weekend.

Dot said...

What was DH thinking? I know what I'm thinking, hee hee.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Punch was totally lost. It's like we woke him from a nap.

Anonymous said...

Must have been Brad K's fault....since Denny does not drive stupid!

Anonymous said...

That was a fail. We didn't know he was in trouble until the camera showed his car was sideways on the apron. As usual, time for a replay to figure out what happened.

Vicky D said...

I wonder if Denny can blame Brad K for that.

Becky said...

Can't wait to hear how Denny spins this one. It looked exactly like the wreck with Keselowski in that Nationwide race a few weeks back. He blamed Brad then. I'm sure he'll blame JPM this time even though it was clear (to me at least) that he just didn't have JPM cleared (same as the incident with Keselowski).

Patrick said...

Can Denny drive the #18 now?

Anonymous said...

@red...I'm sure that's Keselowski's fault! (lol)

Dot said...

Funny about the Kez comments.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Flirting with disaster...get it?

The Loose Wheel said...

What...the...hell Denny?! What...the...hell ESPN?!

How great is this...while Hot Pass is using the Sprint Vision feed from the track, the over-the-air TV folks had Hamlin's crew banging out the dents in the garage before they went to commercial.

unfortunately, espn's fetish transfers over on to the 48 team and they get dissed for it.

just curious does anyone know why some cars have a lot of sponser decals on the side of the car, the small ones and some have just a few (Kurt Busch) and some have none (Vikcers)w just a Sprint cup decal. never understood that and just thought of it when they showed Vickers and he had no stickers on the side just the Spint Logo

Red, I hate watching that 48 dominate, but at the same time I am so fascinated by it because their consistency over the last 7 years has been remarkable. Gordon's hottest streak was 1995-1998, only 4 seasons. Jimmie's got a shot if they keep pace to really rewrite a ton more record books.

Ray Evernham jokes that soon he will not be considered the greatest crew chief of all time because his protege Chad Kanus is about to surpass him

Charlie said...

The money stop. I am so excited. It has to be important to show the stop in full screen during a green flag and racing is happening on the track.

Vicky D said...

I don't think they'll fill Jeff Gordon's car full of fuel since there's only 24 laps to go, Jaime. Unless I'm missing something about the weight.

Tom said...

Makiki,
I completely agree. Now you know where I'm at...definitely a safer place than BSPN.

red said...

@sally: did not know that about miller but it is a very wise decision on their part. now that you pointed it out, it's very noticeable.

The Loose Wheel said...

Jonathan, that is team choice. Teams choose which programs they want to enroll in and are paid accordingly based on how they perform. Red Bull actually has some more decals at the bottom of the car under the scheme design which are the Coors, and another one that escapes me right now. Just extra contingency money teams can opt to accept.

Newracefan said...

Stickers = sponsor money. Some teams don't have, need or don't want(penske)associate sponsors. Also some are "programs" that get them more prize money. That's how a car can finish further back and make more money in the race. That just makes my head hurt.

Jonathan said...

thanks Sally, that makes sense it does look a lil more slick that way

dara2K said...

Jonathan...good question about the smaller decals...Each car has individual sponsors, I have heard. They are not major team sponsors but contribute on a merit basis. Sponsor pays $$ to team/driver for wins, etc. Hope that helps.

It's like none of the Petty cars running Bud (now Coors) stickers for the pole. That's why they don't run at Daytona if they get a pole. Most stickers are for the conyingency awards.

kbaskins said...

@ ri88grl

They might as well show the lap-down driver stops. There's nothing going on at the front of the race, and those lap-down cars are someone's favourite. This may be the only time they're shown on TV all day.
