Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series In Daytona (FOX - 12PM ET)
They are calling it FOX NASCAR Sunday. Basically, it's still Chris Myers, Jeff Hammond and Darrell Waltrip from the Hollywood Hotel in Daytona.
FOX starts the Sprint Cup Series season on a cold and clear day in Florida. NASCAR has undergone several months of changes that have resulted in a solid increase in fan interest. Now, the action on the track has to live up to the hype.
The Hollywood Hotel is going to be the place for FOX to rise to the occasion. Myers has been both the best and worst of what NASCAR needs on TV. On this day, he cannot act as the "California outsider" who does not know a lugnut from a fuel cell. TV viewers need the informed and well-spoken Myers seen on other programs.
The NASCAR on FOX pit reporters are Steve Byrnes, Matt Yocum, Krista Voda and Dick Berggren. This team has been together for a long time and each has worked very hard to be accepted in the sport. FOX continues to be the standard in this area.
Mike Joy has been calling the action in Daytona for a long time. His challenge this February is to help the sport get back on solid footing after a tough 2009. There is little doubt he is the right man for the job. Having already handled the Bud Shoot Out and the Gatorade Duels, the big race is in good hands.
Larry McReynolds has been keeping a low profile and limiting his comments so far this season. After a big bump in the road last year that caused hard feelings all around, McReynold is looking to have a smooth telecast. Still the most detail oriented analyst on NASCAR TV, he should be able to get himself back on track before the checkered flag.
Fan comments have been flying about Darrell Waltrip this season. He was called out by Jack Roush for negative comments about the sport. Then, Denny Hamlin said DW was always telling the drivers how to drive. The bottom line is that Waltrip has been the most high-profile analyst in the sport for a decade. Criticism comes with the territory.
DW will be clearly in the spotlight once the action begins as the story of bump-drafting begins to unfold. NASCAR is turning the drivers loose and has changed many rules since last season. From contact in the corners to the green/white/checkered finish, things are going to be very different in this race.
FOX Sports executive David Hill admitted he was wrong about the later start times. The race today will be underway by 1:20PM ET. Hill admitted he would back off with the Digger character after negative reactions from fans. Finally, Hill said there would be no online streaming of this race because that protected the FOX local stations. That really does not help fans without TV access.
This is the fourth season of offering a live TV race blog. We are looking for your comments on the FOX coverage of this event. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Just click on the comments button below to add your opinion. Thanks and let's go racing!

«Oldest ‹Older 601 – 800 of 878 Newer› Newest»reporting from the 24 radio that they are talking about the patch coming up -- how many laps have they run?
I think they're racing hard instead of single file in case that pothole fix fails and cuts the race short.
Per 24 radio, control tower is talking about more trouble with turn 2 pothole, basically said race is on now, don't know how long we'll be green :/
That's why we got all that ad free red flag coverage...so they could drive us nuts with all the ads during green flag racing!
NOOOOOOO NOT DINGER!!!
OMG! They actually got a caution live!
oh sally, yes, it makes NO sense!
shoot that was close with the 24 and the fact that he didn't hit anyone else
pot hole coming up in turn 2 apparently....
I don't think TV is the only one losing it...Barney Hall saying this could be the money stop for this race on radio.
... but Fox is not going to say anything about it!
They missed the restart, and now we are on tape delay....
WEAK
MV, no, of course not, that wouldn't be POSITIVE.
They are talking about it on the scanners
Neither the 42 or 18 radio is talking about that patch
Per MRN, Dinger won't talk to media.
2 laps behind...
this is beyond weak...
Beyond...
Way to go Fox.. Daytona 500, biggest race of the season...
WEAK...
And not a word about it..
Pretty obvious the Fox announcers are lobbying for a later start time for the 500, by saying the racing is a lot better than earlier.
2 laps behind?
Pitcommand is only 3 or 4 seconds ahead of TV here... I am on 47 to go right now
Since FOX isn't providing updates on the hole from hell, Jeff Gluck is:
http://twitter.com/jeff_gluck
I don't think bumper cams, dirt cams and roof cams should be your primary cameras.
You are F...ing kidding me, they have almost 2 hours to show this.
May be a record number of lead changes but also a record number of MISSED lead changes by the director.
Ad for a movie NOW???!!
Wow, this is getting tough again. Bad timing for this break and hearing the pothole is back.
MikeC - hadn't thought about that aspect. Sorry, I hated having the 500 start so late. I felt like I wasted so much of my day when I was there and the race didn't start until late in the day. We got back to our hotel at midnight and had been up since 6 a.m.
JD, is fox thinking not enough people use twitter so they don't have to talk about what is really happening?
Just told Kyle that Denny is reporting patch is coming up. Now I believe the patch failing reports. Sorry, I take my info first hand lol
JD, is fox thinking not enough people use twitter so they don't have to talk about what is really happening?
Letarte told JG to keep racing hard 'cause NASCAR keeps talking about the patch on the radio.
not on Fox, you're not, but they are talking about it on the 24. Which was race hard, the pothole is coming back.
Great race so far. The red flag was so long but oh well. 46 lead changes between 20 drivers. NOW THATS COMPETITION!!!!!!!!1
MRN giving the race rundown --
caution is out
the hole is back per 24 radio
And that's just it.....the reason they're racing hard isn't because the track has gotten dark, like TV is trying to imply. In my opinion, it's because right now is money time. These drivers know it's time to get going!
13 laps run before it came up, so the 15 lap choice is the winner of the pool.
This is horrible. Missed green flag racing for movie promos. Shame on Fox for ignoring the pothole again. Speedweeks is ending with a dud.
As said before 500 miles is too long, you want real racing shorten it up like the nationwide race
it took them 3 minutes after the caution flew on Raceview to get to it on fox.. they were 2 laps behind on the coverage here on the west coast...
WEAK...
I win the pool! (although I picked 10 laps later)
Reminder: We are going to offer a new post immediately after the checkered flag for you to offer an opinion of the NASCAR on Fox coverage.
This is the most widely read post each week on TDP during the racing season.
Please take a moment when the race is over to leave us a summary. Thanks!
patch caution...going to bring cars back down pit road
Hoots just called cars down pit road.
And even more commercials!
red flag
MikeC, I agree you are right.
The 24 says fix it and then run the same # of laps as they just ran, and say that's the end of the race.
I think that's a reasonable plan - at least then everyone knows how many laps left to run in the race
I am watching the race on tv and listening to the satellite and everything is in synch so i am not sure why others are having problems with a 2 lap delay.
anon 5:43, I picked 15 laps. i win:)
we ran alot more than 13 laps after they fixed the hole
red flag is now out.
congrats, thort! Although I wish you'd been wrong.
We ran 35 laps
If they end the race early cuz of this, I will stop watching Nascar. Thats a promise
No race shall ever displace the 08 Brickyard as the worst in NASCAR history, but this one is making a fine effort to replace the 09 Spring California race for 2nd.
Red flag....done.
drivers are getting out.
actually, David is right. it was more than 13 laps. my error
Crazy....all those laps run on that track in the last week with practices, races, etc. and no problems until it comes to the marquee event.
36 laps using the patch
Kudos to FOX for showing the last few camera shots, verifying the problem, salvaging perhaps a sliver of credibility for this race
this race is done. another Indy moment :(
Least we got 32 years on a pave job...
Barney Hall just said the patch is holding up pretty well...he should fire his spotter.
drivers out of the car again!
39 laps to go but they'll never make it with this quick fix patch.
I think they need to say, we're fixing it then going to run the same # of laps just finished before it came up, so everyone is on the same page and can decide the best strategy.
That was weak...
Missed the restart by 3 laps.
Come back and don't say a word about it.
Everyone with Raceview or Pitcomand were actually 3 laps ahead of the coverage on FOX...
Major FAIL imo....
You imagine if they would've stayed with last year's start time? This would've been going on at about 8:15p.m. eastern time in the evening.
It's probably a good thing we can't see Mark Martin's mouth, or he might be getting a little fine from NASCAR.
Great development for Fox. Focus will be on the pothole and all will be forgotten concerning their abysmal coverage.
35 laps? I must have heard what they said on the radio incorrectly then.
Everyone with pit command? What are you smoking? Like i said I am off by 3 seconds not 3 laps!
how can they have pit reporters and not report what they were hearing about the hole. Fox should be called out on this by someone, this is ridiculous.
Good to hear Harvick saying he wanted to finish the race even though he's winning.
39 laps since the last red flag,... 39 laps to go! Fix it again, run 3 laps of yellow and run the advertised distance.
@Haus- Remember the NASCAR come-to- Jesus meeting with the media.
MikeC, yeah and the fans wouldn't get out of the track for another couple of hours. One year it took us 1.5 hrs to get ON the shuttle bus to get to the parking lot. I was beat after that day, that was the last time I went to Daytona.
@Andrew,
I was at the 24hrs of Fontana and that was the Feb. 2008 race where it rained & rained if that's what race you're referring to. This is starting to look like the 24hrs of Daytona Nascar style.
MV - that sounds like a reasonable plan. But we're dealing with NASCAR here - the most unreasonable group ever.
Patch it. Run 20 laps. Red flag the race. Patch it again. Then run the race and hope it is good enough.
I think I'll go have dinner while they are messing around with this.
HAHAHAHAHA who said the cone thing 3 hours ago?!
according to the lap by lap summary on nascar.com, the hole is BIGGER this time. Of course, that's because they pulled the patch AND more asphalt out with it.
man this sucks for Nascar all the good hype leading into this race and this happens. nascar cant buy a break damn
Repair crew must have made it to Home Depot...they got the bigger torch out there.
DOH
@David, that was me! Don't tell me they are actually considering that!
I say we get a steel plate, some 12 inch bolts, and fill that sucker for now. epoxy around it
FOX wanting to go in and change their camera batteries. Thats what they just said on the 42 radio
since this is a blog of the TV coverage of the sport. i hope that fox does not do the BS stuff and tells us the truth. track has lights. no need to cancel til another day. lets finish the race. I would guess though that this is not good for tv ratings though. but then again, it only 39 or so laps from a now lackluster Daytona 500 . good to see the 43 run well til his spin out
Let's see they said this race was sold out.....and DW said no one had left... but why is it I'm seeing a lot of bleacher space from the overhead shots? I would think it would be awfully hard to see bleacher seats if the race sold out and no one has left.
Gina, no but that is what David Ragan said they should do. He and Carl said they want to race even if the hole isn't fixed. both are saying we know where the hole is, just drive around it.
That is correct David. Hoots told the officials that the in-car cameras were going to get battery changes
That's strange Gina....MRN just said that this problem isn't as bad as the last one. Again, that word, embellishment. Paint a rosy picture.
I'm no asphalt expert, but it seems that they would want to make some cuts to get clean lines and then put in the patch to discourage the additional break up.
MikeC, Fox even said the hole was bigger. Well they eluded to it because you could see from their camera shot that the asphalt around the patch failed first, then the patch came up.
Biathlon is on. I love the crazy combined sports, skiing and shooting!
Maybe Nascar can go for racing and pothole jumping.
maybe they could make a chicane around the hole it'll slow the cars down that's for sure
NASCAR just gave drives permission to change their visors.
I'm just hoping they get this in before the Winternationals come on at 7! The weedburner they used last time caused this problem, you can't heat asphalt like that and expect it not to come apart.
I think the Kyle Busch / cat / toyota commercial is the best right now.
I've been working on my Sunday NYT crossword puzzle while watching local news. Anything new happening?
I love Montoya's radio channel
More from Twitter: "Daytona Beach columnist Ken Willis says Carl Edwards baby is now in second grade."
Now that's funny.
NASCAR requesting all teams to send a crew guy to their haulers
LOL!!!! Pattie:
Swear to God you know what I bet its for?
Crew guy: Your killing me, what?
Pattie: I bet they are going to ask everyone for their bondo to throw in that hole. They came to the Childress truck and got every bit of theirs
that has me worried that they are calling team members to the hauler
@David - Oh NO.
The Simpson's coming on soon. be Maybe they will drop race coverage. Wouldn't that be a hoot?
David what are they saying on the 42 channel, eager to go back to green I am assuming?
Boy will this mess screw up the ratings.
The story behind this hole and the journey to repair it is quite interesting
how does commercial time work? they obviously are showing more commercials then they originally planned so are the companies getting a freebie? is this to make up for what will be lower ratings?
David what are they saying on the 42 channel do they think they can win this thing?
Everybody is so happy and rosey. Nobody is blasting ISC or the track. Wait til tomorrow when the writers start their take.
Drivers to their cars
drivers to cars
WOW! THEY BONDOED THE HELL OUT OF THAT HOLE!
Another good reason for earlier start times. If this race took the green at 3pm, they would be more pressured to finish before it gets too late. At least that's one less thing to worry about.
Who would have thought that those drivers who wrecked early would be watching the end of the race at home.
I notice they refuse to show a real closeup shot of the damage. Is this politically the wrong thing to do?
Branden, they aren't saying alot about the car. I assume they know they are good enough to win. They sound incredibly relaxed though. Making all kinds of light about the hole, saying they should send Rick their body guy to fill the hole, wanting Starbucks because Pattie needs a coffee
Damn, I've never seen so much Bondo in one place!
At this point, Fox has probably forgot about ratings. They probably just want this thing to be over with.
Bill Elliot's up past his bedtime.
Kyle Busch last to his car again
cars will fire in about 2 min.
Time to start compiling the list of excuses for a ratings drop.
never been much of a Fox fan of their NASCAR coverage, but I thought today they were doing a better job, especially Waltrip. He seemed to have toned down his "act" a bit. But sheesh, I just don't understand how NASCAR could screw the pooch so much in terms of the giant pothole which wouldn't die.
OMG anon! Letterman certainly should do a list of excuses for his Top 10!
WOW the energey those 3 in the booth just had as they came back from the last break is what we needed the whole race. maybe they had some brews lol
Montoya starting to talk about the 5 and working to win the race and such but is thinking Pattie's first plan is the correct one. Talking pit strategy. Said 12th on back will take 4, 20th on back maybe 2 but Pattie says those cars are handling horrible. Juan is saying whatever call Pattie makes is the right one he is with him 100%
That is a BIG hole. let's hope the patch holds. I had my dinner so I'm ready to go.
Fox was showing promos for one of their Sunday prime time shows and I thought for a minute they were switching over it.
Nice that it only took one race for the early starting time to reap major benefits. If this race had started at 3:30 we would've been screwed over for a second year in a row.
@Tom- Couldn't disagree more. DW has been insufferable today. Joy can't or wont call the racing and DW just keeps on spitting out nonsense and contradicting himself when he's not towing the NASCAR and ISC line.
This has been a disaster by Fox way before the pothole issue.
pit stops in a few minutes, pit road is still closed.
Please, DW, of course they want to race. The fans are the ones who are sitting around with nothing to do
Let's see if cautions breed cautions from this point on. This about the point in the race where in the past things started to get dicey. 2 years ago, There were 7 cautions....the last 5 of those occurred in the last 40 laps. Look for some intense racing to take place when they go green again.
They do have "local yellows" on the road courses . . .
well now I know where I got the 13 laps from -- it is 13 laps on the current set of tires. Duh!
I have no idea how the falling temperature might affect how well the patch holds.
time to pit
Fox Race Trax isn't working.
What will be interesting is if they wad it up over the patch how it affects it
I have to say I think the comment about leaving the truck out there and make them run around it was pretty funny, but I know someone would hit it and that would be awful
I think this has to be a record for the longest nascar race?
Nothing like a bunch of red flags to boost the post count. What's the record? We're at 738, will we make 800?
Just run the next 33 laps under caution an end with a green / white / checkered. The patch should hold then.
Haus I hate it even more when they put a stop sign in the construction ramp. that really balls it up
With the problems with the track, it'll kind of feel cheap regardless who wins. But, by the same token, 5 to 10 years from now and that point forward, all people will remember is who won the 2010 Daytona 500, not how they won it....just as long as they won it.
So they really took all of the teams' Bondo and shoved it in the hole? Yikes.
No Justin. The 1998 NAPA 500 at Atlanta holds that record. 2 4 hour red flags for rain, race run time was over 12 hours and was still called early
Does anyone know of any other Daytona 500 that finished under the lights?? Will this be the first? I know they had the lights on last year but it was night time just very cloudy in 09
just put a merge sign in front of the patch...it would be just likes some of the expressways here in the Chicago area.
how about having caution out until 10 to go.
Its only us radical fans that would put up with a 5 or 6 hour race.
Andrew, I do not since just after that they called the drivers to their cars. Had it been early in the red flag then I would have thought so.
* i correct myself i ment to say last year wasnt night just cloudy
ok thanks david wow that would make a long day!!!
Jon, the 2007 500 ended under the lights, 08 too
Get ready....it's about to get intense!
Am I the only one with nothing on Fox race track?
What is the worst is being in a construction zone with an entrance ramp that has a yield sign...those on the ramp tend to ignore that sign more times than not.
OK, I have to just mute DW now
Uh oh, JG says the patch is still wet.
Pattie saying they are dragging the yellow out so the patch holds
crap, Gordon just said he thought the patch is still wet. OK, now I'm going to seriously bite my nails.
gordon on radio saying track is wet over pothole in 1/2
NorCal, Gordon is notorious for whining, that sounds like JG
I say tack another 100 laps on and make this thing a race!
ok just was curious. I forget these things lol as you all know its been a long day but then agian they started a lot later as well.
norcalfan - sounds like you listen to the same channel as me.
Just came back - maybe not, sorry. It won't help my nailbiting problem tho
They should stop the race now and declare Scott Speed the winner. Hahaha.
JG says patch is OK now. Drama queen moment.
here we goooooooooo woooooooooooooooooooo
Please don't have a huge wreck....please.....
Geez, the 82 didn't stop and he's in the lead. that looks like a disaster to me.
Wonder how long FOX wi ll stick with post race coverage?
inside line not moving because 82 is on old tires.
See the stuff kick up over the patch in the camera.
Kick the 82 out of the way.
On the west coast, FOX is behind Raceview, by a lot.
We are still in Yellow, but on raceview, they've done two laps already.
I watched stuff fly out of that patch when they just showed it..:(
Fox will do a victory lane interview, send everyone over to SPEED, and get out in a hurry.
fianlly the inside line is moving
As I recall 20 years or so ago the 2nd Pocono race was red flagged for at least an hour for fog.
How cool would that be if #82 wins?
I am in Phoenix AZ and we are green.
Blame your local affiliate there annon
oh boy I hate RP racing. My stomach hurts
I say we make 800 posts easily
commercial? They are going to commercial with 20 to go? what idiot called that?
THERE ARE 20 LAPS LEFT. You have had over two and a a half hours of red flag time. YOU SHOULD NOT BE GOING TO COMMERCIAL NOW. Absolutely inexcusable.
(Yes, I have been imbibing. Why do you ask?)
Any odds that we come back and there's been a huge wreck?
Wow. There is nothing more to say. Commercial break with 20 laps left and the race under green.
Another Jimmie Johnson commercial - #25 today.
Fox today is truly a joke.
I cannot believe this. I am watching a commercial with under 20 to go. Good thing I have MRN on
Idiots! complete idiots!
Can we go 1 lap without a tight shot or incar cam?
Fox must be making a fortune from commercials today.
ESPN & FOX should see this comment by a spotter:
Spotter = "well we are gonna finish under the lights, we are probably on some cable channel now
Spotter= the life-time channel, bunch of women watching us"
hehehe....fortunately not the case, but it made me laugh.
OMG!!! DirecTV has cut off the last 2 HotPass channels, including Jr's !!!!
48 off the pace.
Has JJ's luck finally turned?
News flash from Mike Joy: JJ will not win the Daytona 500. Wow, I never would have known
