Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series in Darlington (7PM - FOX)

The night race in Darlington this year should be outstanding. Chris Myers will start the day from the Hollywood Hotel with Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Hammond. This pre-race show is only thirty minutes long. The green flag is 7:44PM ET.

Mike Joy will call the race with Waltrip and Larry McReynolds. On pit road are Krista Voda, Dick Berggren, Matt Yocum and Steve Byrnes.

Darlington is a track where the speeds have continued to climb, well beyond what the track was designed to accommodate. This means the action is always happening very quickly. Bottom line, it is tough to cover on TV.

Aerial shots are great, as well as the famous speed shots of the cars running right up against the outside SAFER barrier. Good directors keep the cars coming around the corner in the camera shot and stay wide while the leaders run down the straight. This lets the viewers watch the race for the lead and monitor the corners, where the action usually happens.

Pit road is going to be key at Darlington as never before. Tire strategy may come into play at a track where teams were formerly forced to take four every single time. Kyle Busch said earlier on TV that teams may take two tires in order to pass on pit road.

FOX had a tough outing last week, but Darlington may be just the place to recover. Issues last week included using in-car cameras while missing the action and the lack of updates before restarts. The big issue, as it has been this entire season, is the incredible amount of commercial breaks in the races.

This post will host your comments on the FOX coverage of the Sprint Cup Series race from Darlington. To add your TV-related comment, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thank you for taking the time to live blog the race with us tonight.

Charlie u must not know Darlington it does get spread out during green flag runs! There doing the best they can much better than last week

Anonymous said...

Do any of the FOX camera guys contract and work for TNT also?

red said...

ummm, that's actually the left rear of bowyer's car, not the left front.

don't understand why we were shown the in-car of bowyer's car as he came down pit road: that visual adds nothing to the developing story. feels like a "well, we have that shot, let's just use it" to me.

tight shots, why? Green flag racing and show a car in the pits, Why?

Are these cameras not able to show a wide shot. Do they not have the right lens in their cameras.

What happened to Jimmie Johnson? Is he in the garage?

What do you guys think of Sams future??? Does he for sure have a ride for next year?

Oh man, a Lady in Black and Darlington Stripe reference - two drinks,

Jimmie is 26th, 20 seconds off

With Shell coming in to the Penske camp, I doubt that Mobile One will be welcome.

Sam will wreck with 25 to go - happens each week.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Nothing against Cialis, but come on now....

The Loose Wheel said...

Sam has a ride as far as Penske has said thus far. They also said they may have a replacement sponsor ready to announce in the next couple months. We'll see though

Jonathan, IndyCar calling his name. We will take Scott Dixon to NASCAR.

Wow, no love for Hornish here...

There is a group of folks who work for the NASCAR Media Group who service the networks doing TV on the weekends.

There is also a group that works specifically for ESPN, FOX, SPEED, etc...

It's only 9 on the east coast & I'm already exhausted w/trying to keep up w/the race on twitter & here & TV. Why tonite?? Because I FINALLY got hi-speed internet!! NO more dial-up for me! Still hate that the cautions happen during commls tho..:(

Anonymous said...

He's had his trial for three years. No real progress for Sam. A failed experiment.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Penske is going to flip someone. Wait and see. Penske loves Sam, but this is enough...

Anonymous said...

But NASCAR Media Group owns all footage right?

Jonathan said...

I think Scott Speed, and Max Papis (when he gets a better ride) will fare much better than Sam has

NorCalFan said...

No problems with PitCommand or scanner in N. Calif.

TexasRaceLady said...

I can't believe what I'm hearing -- Mike Joy is actually being allowed to call PxP.

Some of the camera work still needs to be improved, but it's not as herky-jerky as last week.

Anonymous said...

Penske needs to make room for Allgaier. He is the real deal.

Anonymous said...

The bigger question than Sam is about Penske's sponsorship. Is Verizon going to continue to not sponsor a Penske car the way Marlboro did for so many years.

Jonathan said...

Texas I couldnt have said it better myself it is nice this reminds me of Fox a few years back

Anonymous said...

Pretty sad that when Jimmie when to the garage, we had to learn about it from FOX RaceTrax.

But, hey, the 48 is just a back marker, right? No need to talk about him...

The Loose Wheel said...

No real progress? He was out of the top 35 or close enough to it year 1, Last year he showed flashes on tracks like Richmond and Michigan, so early to write the guy off.

Penske with the exception of Busch has been mediocre until this year. Oh, and his teammate wadded him up at Daytona...

I like Sam and believe he is talented. I can't imagine Penske just tossing him to the curb, and I can't see Sam going back to Indycar. So unless a Sportscar seat is open and Allgaier is getting the call, Sam should be back next year though it's the final year on his contract.

red said...

perfect example of why the broadcast doesn't work sometimes:
"there's elliot sadler in his #19 ford" and we get a visual of the car running by itself. no context, no story and then . . . we're on to the next visual, this time an extended conversation about the current leader.

it's just a disconnect. sort of "OK, we'll show a car that isn't one we talk about all the time" but with no reason or context, visually or otherwise. it doesn't flow at a point where it really could flow.

Jonathan said...

didnt we say the same about David Ragan (ugh I wish he would do better I work for UPS) I think Justin Allgaier would flop just like David has in Spint Cup!

Daly Planet Editor said...

NMG rules are the same as NFL, MLB or NHL.

The league owns the footage once the TV network airs it. News can use it for 24 hours.

No NASCAR footage online unless it is on NASCAR.com website. Turner owns all the online rights.

bevo said...

You want fun from the IRL? Helio is your man.

As for Fox - booth is much, much, much better. Camera shots not.

The Loose Wheel said...

Umm guys, Jimmie is on the track. Foxtrax and whoever is saying he is off is lying. He is still on the lead lap.

Verizon's last year with Penske is this year so the Shell money replaces Verizon, but it scoots Mobil out of the picture. Thats why Kez is going to the Miller sponsor.

Roger has enough money and resources they could run that car blank...or with Penske brands on it.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Only thing I heard was Hornish was going back to open wheel. Probably a relief for him. IndyCar can use him and the open slot at Penske can bring a new sponsor and driver.

Love to see if it's Bud.

red said...

Daly Planet Editor said...
What happened to Jimmie Johnson? Is he in the garage?

WOW! thatis one damning statement right there, jd! we're watching the race and don't even know where the current champion is in the race.

wow. just . . . wow.

glenc1 said...

When Menard spun, I thought, oh, it's not Hornish, lol. I like Sam, but this has gone on long enough. He's improved, but I just can't see why a sponsor would find him appealing (in his defense, neither Kvapil or Gaughan did any better in that car either.) And the Penske cars have struggled a bit in general. But I'm starting to think, if it was gonna take, it would be showing now.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, David, they weren't "lying."

Chad sent him to the garage. Yes, he came back, but Fox didn't even tell us he was there.

Jonathan said...

JD you talked about maybe Dixon coming is there any truth to that or just wishful thinking? I myself wouldnt mind seeing Tony Kanaan come to cup!

MikeC said...

This could get fun. Johnson is about to be lapped.

Anonymous said...

Penske needs to FIRE the crew chief on Sam's team

Pay attention ... The car is either way too loose or way too tight ...

The pit crew is SLOW ... and then they have to fight the whole race to make up for mistakes that the crew chief made early on ...

Sammy won the Indy 500 ... That's as good as gold for The Captain!

There were other cars really close to Sammy and that's WHY he got into the wall ... And a certain 4-time Cup champ has been into the wall TOO today ...

Sally said...

About time for another convenient debris caution?

bevo said...

Pretty impressive if the 48 went to the garage and it's now on the lead lap...

The Loose Wheel said...

Who is Dixon going to drive for? Ganassi has him but doesn't have the resources to run a 3rd car.

It might be interesting but hasn't anyone learned from just throwing a guy in a Cup car just how bad that result can turn out?

If it's going to happen, they need to have all the details (team, car, sponsor, etc) worked out in about another 6 weeks otherwise it ain't gonna be pretty

Anonymous said...

Sam may have won the Indy 500, but in three years in this series, his major accomplishment has been wrecking at each track.

How long do you blame the crew before you realize it is the driver hitting the wall?

Sally said...

No kidding. Pretty good when you lose 2 laps just pitting under green on normal conditions.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Let's talk JJ. We were told he went to the garage and Chad told him to do that.

Did he not go to the garage? No way he is on the lead lap and went to the garage even for a minute.

Anyone know what happened?

Anonymous said...

I really like it when talk in the booth turns to strategery.

Sally said...

My thought exactly, JD. Nice trick.

The Loose Wheel said...

They may have told Jimmie to go to the garage, but if they worked on the car, he'd have to be lapped by now. He could have pulled behind the wall then U-turned out after a last second change of heart.

Speaking of how long do you blame the crew before looking at the driver, how's that 88 been fairing the last year or so?

bevo said...

@JD- perhaps Chad was being sarcastic?

Anonymous - IF the car is constantly CRAP, it's pretty hard for ANYONE (including the wonder boy twins) to do any good ...

Roger is the richest team owner ... Apparently, you do NOT understand what an Indy 500 WIN means to him ... Roger has said multiple times that Sammy will be back in the # 77 Cup car next year ...

Sammy had engine problems in the Gatorade duals, Fontana and Vegas ... Had a good run going at Dega til two certain 4-time Cup champs caused wrecks ...

Anonymous said...

Yeah, if you want to see what occurs during tonight's race, you best be in Darlington, because you will not learn from NASCARonFox.

The Loose Wheel said...

Well someone said he went to the garage and came back out...so did he or didn't he? either they tried to "break" the story and got caught early or he pulled some magical time warp, went to the garage and came out still on the lead lap.

The Loose Wheel said...

My favorite FOX feature.

In lap/Out lap times.

I still take credit for it lol.

Charlie said...

Has the booth told you where your driver is and why?

Anonymous said...

I was just waiting for a comparison to Michael Schumacher on DW's line about the importance of a fast lap on pit-in.

Anonymous said...

No, not tonight. I've learned more from Twitter than from TV.

The Loose Wheel said...

tia, Look at what 2 Daytona 500's got Mikey Waltrip...

Win a big race, you get alot more rope to hang yourself with. I hope Sam does well, it's been a long road thus far but like you, I can spin it positive because I actually follow Sam and pay some attention what happens and it's not always his fault.

Anonymous said...

If Roger Penske, the "richest car owner" keeps giving Sam a crappy car, then Mr. Penske has a real problem.

Face it, Sam has not performed well in this series. When you have to list how other people have screwed him every single time, then it's Sam who is truly at fault.

The Loose Wheel said...

Daly Planet Editor said...

Our fundamental belief here is that the role of NASCAR TV is to show the viewers at home exactly what the fans in the stands are watching.

This is a philosophy that ESPN and TNN used for years. Even if the best racing was for tenth.

These NFL guys always get caught up in tight shots of one or two cars battling and they begin to miss the big picture of the race.

It's a huge frustration. Wait until TNT starts with director Mike Wells. Totally different feel and look all race long.

RustyWaltrip,Jr. said...

Brad K. is a good barometer of what can be done in Penske cars. Let's just watch what happens this year.

@david: i take no joy in that.

and did mike joy just tell us "that bright green appendage under the front bumper of the fender is the splitter"?!? can you imagine a MLB broadcaster telling us "that bright white object with the red stiches is a baseball?"

dear fox, we are not stupid about our sport. please don't treat us that way.

The Loose Wheel said...

Ryan Newman in his last couple years at Penske aside from winning the Daytona 500 had some very rough times, Stremme had rough times, Gaughn, Kvpil and Keselowski at times have struggled, yet you call for Sam to leave NASCAR all together?

Penske has had a constant struggle getting all 3 of their cars going well, they had problems for awhile getting 2 cars going good.

It's not as cut and dry as the driver sucks, its all his fault, get rid of him. I agree though the next 2 or 3 months are critical for Sam in whether he is back in that car next year or not. I feel like he will be but if things go really bad it could be the end.

Rob,

The NASCAR Media Group is in charge of coordinating the TV compound.

Each network shares some crew members, like high camera guys up top, but has their own crew folks too.

It's a huge logistical deal that NMG has been coordinating very well for four years now.

If you think about coming on Twitter, you can get info from TV crew folks and updates on those types of issues.

The last ten years have convinced me we will never have the near-documentary style race coverage of the past ever again. What we will have to endure is the 'interpretive reality' that current rights-holders bring us. But we can feel secure in the knowledge that we can aspire to be as intelligent as the suit in the broadcasting business.

Anonymous said...

Why? What if I sued the name "IdontlikeSam?" Would that help you somehow?

Before the race, the booth talked about cars 'coming and going' as the race goes on. Too bad they can't seem to show that as it happens. Focus on the front of the field, and you miss things like KB moving from 35th to 3rd thru the field. Have no idea how he got there, do we?

At least that is my theory.

Hard to tell sometimes what audio goes where. Were they cheering because 48 wrecked or because he got out ok? Live TV is a relative term, isn't it. TV is behind Twitter and radio is behind TV 65 sec.

JD: My understanding is that if it is filmed at a race track during a race weekend (72 hours prior to a race, 24 hours after) NASCAR owns the footage. Period. You have to be approved by NASCAR to shoot at the track, and you cannot use the footage anywhere without explicit permission. NASCAR doesn't just own the video that is aired - they own everything shot at the track.

This race is a particular catch-22

If you start earlier you run into baseball and break the "same start times" rule Nascar went with this year.

Other alternative is to make it a shorter race, which normally I would be ok with, but 500 miles at Darlington is such a part of history.

Sally said...

Anon@9:45...Thanks for that. We are so used to people saying we kvetch for no reason. All we really want is coverage of the race as it happens, with information about all the cars on the track. Is it really too much to expect to be able to follow the race just watching the TV?

Anon 9:58PM,

Those are the non-program rights. You have to get either a news credit or deal with NMG if you are shooting for commercial or PR or a show for post.

Really close to NFL and PGA guidelines, those are the two they used when setting it up.

NMG currently produces all the Speed Stage shows. One reason SPEED started Race Hub and moved NASCAR Performance to the their own studio.

Has DW taken a breath tonight? I wonder if there's a blimp to show the lights around the whole track.
