Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series From Phoenix (FOX - 2:30PM ET)

The real season starts this week as the ten month grind begins at the Phoenix International Raceway. FOX starts with a thirty minute pre-race show, then opening ceremonies and race coverage.

Chris Myers, Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Hammond are first up. It should be interesting to see if FOX keeps the new smaller outdoor set used in Daytona. That put the trio out among the fans and gave the pre-race show a very different vibe.

Waltrip joins Mike Joy and Larry McReynolds in the TV booth for the race. Waltrip took away Joy's final lap call last week by talking over top of the TV veteran. We will see if Waltrip learned anything from the criticism he received or if he continues to be the primary voice in the booth.

Steve Byrnes, Matt Yocum, Krista Voda and Dick Berggren are the pit reporters. Unlike Daytona, this group should be busy today with tires, fuel and pit strategy being the big stories. We still have to see how long the tires last on a green track scrubbed by rain overnight.

While Daytona and the lovebug style of racing demanded wideshots and special coverage, PIR will tell the tale of whether the TV director is going to continue this style or return to the classic FOX approach of single car shots and in-car cameras.

The weather looks good and the scenery from PIR is outstanding. With some good racing, PIR has the potential to erase a lot of the bad memories of the lovebug push show seen at Daytona.

This post will serve to host your comments on the FOX coverage of the Sprint Cup Series from PIR. To add your TV-related comments, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thank you for taking the time to stop by The Daly Planet.

Editor -
here's the link I use - http://107countrypsk/com

btw, looks like Fox's production team didn't get their shot this year, they obviously caught ESPN disease ...don't know that I can hold out for TNT's 6-race deal ...not really interested in ESPN's return to Sprint Cup coverage, so this 52-year long fan may truly toss in the towel ...enough that networks abuse fan loyalty, too much that NASCAR condones it

Considering that DW is probably a member of AARP, you'd think he'd be paid to talk about it more. oh wait, it's not a toyota and DW only shills for them.

In other words, even more reason for wrecked cars to get back out on the track to serve as slow-moving chicanes.

Thanks, Brian.

Single car shots, commercial, promo. REPEAT

Anonymous said...

Commercials that are run during a Red Flag don't "count" towards inventory, so anything that is run during a red flag has to be run again, right JD?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Got a long way to go, hope they spice it up!

Daly Planet Editor said...

They should count, it's rain that is the big commercial issue.

This broadcast has been abysmal. I'm glad I was in Daytona live so the Fox folk didn't ruin it for me. Confused booth guys, too many in cars, tight shots. oh boy, it's gonna be a long season.

AncientRacer said...

WHOMEVER it was that suggested Thundercountry THANKS. My Station in Rome Ga, is not streaming as well today for some reason of which I know naught

brad, sounds like post-Daytona letdown for the TV guys too.

Walter gets the Gold Star tweet of the race. And it's early yet!

Shame NOBODY running NASCAR cares. It's truly sad for those of us WHO USED to plan our tv viewing AROUND the broadcast. Now we plan our housework/other stuff & catch highlights/comments online.

Brian France & TPTB of NASCAR should be so proud of their criminally bad telecasts!...insert sarcasm

:-(

I'm surprised the haven't mentioned junior for a while. He's back mid-pack, as usual...just as I typed that, they mentioned him...Pizza promo, of course.

No mention of Carl coming up to speed just ahead of Kyle.

KudzuCarl said...

By what I see on Track Pass, there is a heck of a battle for the lead between Stewart and Gordon. Wouldn't know from the TV since we're in commercial.

Daly Planet Editor said...

This is going to be a scramble with cars coming back on.

Anonymous said...

Getting close to changing the channel.

larry said...

Carl? Oh yeah...you mean the Subway guy...

Sally said...

Wow...Montoya got a mention? Oops. Wonder how much longer Regan will have a job?

GinaV24 said...

Ragan in the wall per MRN

OSBORNK said...

What are they going to do without Subway and UPS?

GinaV24 said...

hard hit for the UPS car -- I wonder if we'll continue to see the full screen UPS ad since the car is back in the garage.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Pretty much hopping around and trying to figure out what stories to tell. No easy task right now.

AncientRacer said...

Actually this says something:

Johanna Long just tweeted that she has been for a walk on the beach.

Now think about that. A driver. A good one. Raced Friday. But today she is not suffering with the rest of us. SHE IS NOT WATCHING A RACE

It is cool. and it says something.

GinaV24 said...

JD, they could try just calling the action on the track rather than hopping around like a bunch of headless dummies.

GinaV24 said...

Ancient -- I knew she was a smart woman! i should go do that.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Got a point there.

KudzuCarl said...

A "through the field" would be nice. 14 is my guy, but I'd like to know who is back on the track, and who is unexpectedly doing well. Doesn't hurt to give everybody at least one sponsor view either.

bevo said...

This might be the most disjointed FOX broadcast I can remember.

KudzuCarl said...

Afraid David Ragan will soon be back pumping gas in Unadilla, GA. Roush can't put up with this much longer.

slander q. libel said...

And to think that a while back they claimed that there would be less retarded rat on the screen. Seems to me that there's been more of it than ever.

GinaV24 said...

If they have the post-Daytona blues, then Fox needs to consider having another team in place to do the 2nd race, if they are too tired to do a decent job.

GinaV24 said...

LOL, sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes your the bug! That was perfect timing for that in car shot.

Sally said...

Harvick is running in 5th after being in the thick of the wreck. Nice of them to mention it.

erb224 said...

Ummm #56 goes in P3 comes out P20... no mention of what happened to him on TV.

larry said...

@AR - When I raced, I never left the track even if I crashed out. I stayed to watch, because it was my passion. It was a sport and competition, not a business. I was frequently among the last to leave. Now the drivers are the first to leave, especially when they crash out.

brad said...

I believe that 2 lap crank it up may have been the best 2 laps yet. ofcourse noone was talking!!coincidence????

KudzuCarl said...

@erb -- I think they actually did talk about a left front problem on the 56 pit stop.

Sally said...

@erb That's a huge reason the broadcasts are so bad...so little information given that is useful. If they did that, there would be less time left for useless babble from DW.

GinaV24 said...

gee, KyBu made a clean pass of the 39. I wasn't expecting that.

Sophia said...

Bevo

It's so EARLY in the season too for such putrid races on Fox. OBVIOUSLY they do not care.

I miss having MRN in house radio or car so could leave house to listen....sigh...though grateful to find online.

A local twitter peep who used to LOVE NASCAR & Tony Stewart did not even watch Daytona 500 this yr. NO interest.

But hey, they keep changing the rules & "listening to the fans"..make me sick.

My cats could step on switches in the truck by ACCIDENT & show better camera angles...

GinaV24 said...

gee are they actually showing some of the field? It's a miracle!

GinaV24 said...

That's a pretty shot of the sky, but I'd rather see the cars on the track.

Anonymous said...

I'm not saying they should count. I remember someone saying in here that they don't count. Heck, most of us watch even when there's a red flag.

NorCalFan said...

@KudzuCarl, I've thought the same thing about Ragan. If he doesn't have a miraculous turnaround this season, I think Trevor could replace him.

@Gina, as a JG fan myself, Nascar.com are aware of the radio problem & stated on their support page that it should be working again shortly.

AncientRacer said...

@GinaV24

Ancient -- I knew she was a smart woman! i should go do that.

Yeah, but for her and me it aint no big thing. the problem around here is keeping that danged white sand outta your house.

Walking on the beach here is sumpin u du when u got nuttin 2du

And that is, oddly, why it makes it so special

Daly Planet Editor said...

Well, we are getting there!!

brad said...

JD the question is how many people did Fox run off before they decided to actually shoot the race in a decent manner?

GinaV24 said...

NorCalFan -- thanks for the update on SuperG's radio issue. I won't hold my breath -- it will probably be fixed tomorrow!

Ancient -- that's probably true, I'd have to go a bit further to walk on the beach, but it still sounds like a good option rather than dealing with the Fox-up that I'm watching on TV!

Thank goodness for MRN's broadcast.

Anonymous said...

Maybe it's me, but I don't remember Chris Myers being so bad. I know he recently had a personal loss, but he just seems out of it. This has got to be the worst race Mike Joy has ever called. I wish they'd all stop talking until something significant happened. Hard to believe we're only to the half way point!

Sally said...

How many cars left on the lead lap? Shouldn't that info be on the streamer? Never mind...it's too useful.

AncientRacer said...

"Fox-up"

Sweet. Shoulda thought of that myself.

Nearly an Olbermannism

GinaV24 said...

good grief, more commercials

Sally said...

Using the words "FOX" or "ESPN" with the words 'race coverage' is an oxymoron.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Can we all agree this is just a weird on-air vibe today?

AncientRacer said...

Jd

Yes we can say that and I can say I just saw MW's hinie again on TV!

KudzuCarl said...

Larry Mac seems oddly out of it today. He didn't add much to Daytona either. I wonder if something is going on with him.

brad said...

you would never know this whole on air crew has been together from the start just by watching. seems like they were just put together this morning.

Sophia said...

yes we can say that JD

And I'm WAY beyong tired of MW rear end shaking commercial too.

Gotta admit, I detest all NAPA music adds.

Miss the letters to Mikey ones :) And where they spoke in them...not lame lip syncing.

Still listening to MRN w tv on mute while it storms around us.

GinaV24 said...

Ancient - when I'm bored, I can get very inspired, although it isn't always in a constructive fashion. LOL

JD -- yep, strange vibe is probably the politest way of putting it.

GinaV24 said...

Tony was told to pit and let the 48 lead a lap.

Anonymous said...

@KudzuCarl

Larry is confused and distracted as he tries to break Brandon into the big time. He is working so hard to get sponors for Brandon that he is really distracted. He is confused because his prominence does not/has not resulted in sponsorships.

bevo said...

Agree JD, has that last year NBC feel to me

Anonymous said...

Seriously? "Carl was in the garage long enough to have not one, but two of those (whatever) chicken sandwiches he likes!" How professional that was.... NOT.
Cathy

Sally said...

Did mike say Tony Raines pitted????

GinaV24 said...

Maybe Larry should listen to last year's broadcasts and it might become more clear why he's not influential enough to get sponsorship for Brandon.

I have nothing against him or Brandon, but we know that sponsorship $ are tight as evidenced by the trouble that Stewart & Gordon had getting sponsorship money. So why would Larry think that a former crew chief and now broadcaster should be able to command sonsorship $?

And we'll also mention what that driver's favorite sandwich is, too. Don't tell me those weren't paid for showings! lol

*sigh*

MRN should be carried in every city on LAND radio. I swear that would increase INTEREST in the sport. Imagine being able to work out in the yard/garden & listen to the race while enjoying the voices, pictures in our head & fresh air.

Did you hear Mike Joy when he actually had to cue DW to talk after the checker?

Sophie....I did what what you said. I have a tv and radio in the garage. Cranked MRN while washing the car, straightening up, etc. Glanced at the tv only when something exciting going on. Great end of the race, glad to see KyBu in 2Nd.
