Chris. Jerry Punch did call all those races they showed this morning. If you don't believe, then just visit youtube and find the races.

Anonymous 6:22pm - Well.... It certainly seems as though we are a bunch of dummies.... sure left the inference that we would be able to see interviews on one of the ESPN's.

Anonymous 6:27pm - Don't let the door catch your backside on the way out the door....

Comment at 6:27pm must be from some ABC/ESPN employee. If you are, then let me say I think your entire race production package is worse than a 1st grade elementary school christmas production. Everyone involved sucks. Most of you all are no good at what you do and the majority of you should be fired post-haste starting with the two biggest losers, Jerry Punch and Rusty Wallace.

To anonymous at 4:14 PM about "if the race were to end right now",

Nothing could beat Buddy Baker on TNN back in the day when he would always respond "if they ended the race right now... I think there'd be a big fight."

Yeah, I think I'm the only one who really liked Buddy and Eli calling the races on TNN.

How many people have ESPN NEWS? Not that many.

I have it, but won't watch their highlight coverage anymore because the guys there have no clue what they are doing. The last straw for me was the duo showing the highlights immediately after one race -it may have been Dover- were making mistake after mistake in the script as they tried to show the highlights and then laughing about it. They just didn't care.

Now that's a witty intelligent come back. Does your boss at ABC/ESPN know your using the company computer to post on here?

Now NASCAR fans know how IRL fans have felt for years. If the race ends close to off air time... too bad. I disagree to what they did to IRL fans but to do it to NASCAR with a larger audience, Pathetic! Move it to ESPN News.. Oh wait.. ESPN News is too busy showing graphics and phone interviews of NFL games. What is this, ESPN Radio? I like ESPN but this monkey humping has got to stop.

PS: Love this site.

The rules for posting are on the right hand side of the main page. You are free to agree or disagree with any TV coverage, other posters, and myself.

What you cannot do is be mean or use bad language. Apparently, that is a challenge to some folks.

If you have a feeling about a TV issue, state your case. Where else can you leave a comment that will be read by ESPN, SPEED and most of the announcers and executives in this industry?

Choose your words carefully, and make your case.

The overall broadcast was good. Postrace = Disappoiting.

John. Will you be having another Question and Answer post on your site this week? I have some questions about today.

Sean said...

I've said from the beginning that ESPN should have picked Allen Bestwick to be in the booth. Jerry Punch is much more comfotable on pit road with his monotone voice.

Anonymous said...

What will Erik K. use as a headline tonight on NASCAR Now. Most likely knowing him it will be something like "Talladega best race in NASCAR history".

Daly Planet Editor said...

The question and answer forum will open up on Tuesday afternoon and will continue all the way through Friday.

If the questions continue to be strong, I will keep this going weekly through November.

Thanks for asking.

You never know. Next season ESPN could switch the booth up a bit. Like NBC did, and what ABC did to the IRL announcers.

For those looking for post race coverag. Speed Report at 7:00/

Sean said...

John will you be putting a column up tonight?

Vince said...

Sean, I agree. I got a chance to meet Dr. Punch on a flight and he is a super nice guy. Just don't think he fits in as the "main" guy in the booth. His delivery just seems forced and he doesn't seem comfortable. He was great as the lead pit reporter. I'd like to see them at least give AB a chance to do a Cup race again. I liked him when he was the NBC play by play guy in the booth and don't really know what happened to get him demoted and replaced by Bill Webber. JD any comments on why AB was replaced with Webber on NBC?

Daly Planet Editor said...

There will be a column coming up on Sunday's one hour NASCAR Now, another on the RaceDay vs. NASCAR Countdown saga, and one on the ABC race coverage.

They should begin to be posted around 8PM Eastern after editing and content checking. Yes, I have people that check stuff!

ESPN and their talking heads, especially on SPORTSCENTER are "LEGENDS IN THEIR OWN Minds"

Or alleged minds...That's why I do NOT watch that show...I have tried when desperate but no thanks.

Oh, and a few months back, an IRL went off a little before 4pm here. Before Tony Kanaan could answer an interview question, he was cut off MID SENTENCE to go to a freaking INFOMERCIAL. When you call the local stations on the weekends, nobody answers the phone but the news rooms. But I was livid.

ABC STINKS. ESPN, ESPU, All 'Bout Cash...they do not care about the fans. They are so busy praising and promoting themselves.

Oh, and one last bitch, I thought those REPETITIVE promos for DH were disgusting and not fit for little kids.

God, I never thought the coverage would be WORSE than TNT's. I never ever thought I would miss the drama marches of Bill Weber.

God I miss Benny.

Anonymous said...

My question is if Allen was ever mad at Bill, or if there was any rivarley.

Anonymous said...

Coverage is not worse than TNT.

SophiaZ, Lighten up.

Just an observation or two:
The final half hour of this race should have been the most exciting but with the large amount of commercial breaks the continuity of the race was lost! In any sports broadcast, the viewer wants to have connection with what's going on and ABC/ESPN just blew it until the final few laps. I wish the announcers had, instead of going to a couple of those commercial breaks, had filled us in on the rapidly-evolving track stratagies.Instead its pack in more commercials! I don't see this happening on other sports broadcasts and it seems to be a disservice to NASCAR fans in particular!(I'll be at Charlotte next weekend and unless I watch the monitors in the Speedway Club I won't get to see another typical Chase broadcast!)
Also to Vince: your blog at 3:31pm - please for the rest of the season, if they haven't mentioned the draft tracker please don't mention its absence! (I can't wait to see it at Martinsville, especially the dreaded "draft lock"!
Thanks, Mr. Daly, for these excellent columns!
Tom in Dayton OH.

Reed Sorenson did not pass inspection.

Another low car deal. announcements on Tuesday according to Dilner

I missed where Stewart finished but he was mad enough to avoid the media again. Hmmm...even Speed guys.

Vince said...

Boy ESPN really gave us a lot of new post race interviews on SC, huh? Yawn.........

Tom in Dayton, OH; yeah I won't mention that again! All was quiet on that subject until I spoke up.

I gotta go fix dinner and catch the REAL RACING NEWS on SPEED. Pitiful SPEED is not on basic cables for ALL to see.
October 7, 2007 6:10 PM

Am I the only one with SPEED on standard cable?

Anonymous said...

I sure if NASCAR had better TV ratings, local affiliates would have no problems for the race broadcast to go beyond its scheduled window, and ABC wouldn't mind their Sunday night lineup, which can exceed 19 million viewers. However, NASCAR just isn't a big enough draw as it pales in comparison. Local affilates can make more money with their regular programming.

Sophia said...

Twarner NEVER had speed on basic. You are VERY LUCKY if it is a basic package. I wish Fox would bump it DOWn to basic....could help ratings when more folks could watch the TRUCKS, the ALL STAR RACE....and LACK OF NASCAR news on ESPN to SPEED. And speed could do all monday night Post race shows and stuff. Some shows used to be digital and were bumped DOWN. FOX has the money to make it more affordable and getting it to the masses could PAY OFF, maybe?

I don't know anybody that gets it on basic. Consider yourself blessed. :-)

Now if they would just drop the T&A and cover more types of racing.

I just read on another board that SC devoted an alleged 4o seconds to NASCAR?

I am enjoying SPEED REPORT and next is VL

Then W Tunnel...but I am pretty obsessed on Sundays with NASCAR. I don't even answer my phone once the action starts. I don't have TIVO or anything.

Low tech household, we.

:-)

JD, could you address the alleged complaints by local news affiliates that have apparently resulted in rushed post-race coverage?

that has nothing to do with TV. This is no place to put down team Hendrick

I have speed on basic tv, channel 38, and i live in podunck Iowa, only a town of 8,0000!!

It has never been digital cable. ESPN NEWS, on the other hand, is on digital, which I never watch.

oops.......town of only 8,000!!

I know SPEED is on standard cable in San Diego and Los Angeles.

Punch is such a good guy, sometimes I just feel bad for him. Imagine if a Steve Byrnes or Allen Bestwick was up top and Punch was in the Infield instead of Kolber.

John, what are you thinking? Steve Byrnes couldn't carry Allen Bestwicks water. Byrnes isn't a play by play guy.

I would love to see Bob Jenkins or AB with Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree next year.

I like Jerry as well, but he was so much better on pit road. Even if they split the time in the booth between him and Bob/AB, it could be great.

I would love to watch Speed, and you can say all you want about them "catching" ESPN2, but they're not even close. The 70 million homes they're in is an inflated number.
October 7, 2007 10:48 PM

JD, Can you explain exactly the "70 million homes" number is obtained?

Anonymous said...

Note: I posted the above comment in the wrong column.

One way to help get the races done before 6:00 pm eastern is to START THEM EARLIER!

Anonymous said...

Agree that Byrnes couldn't carry Bestwick's water or anyone's water for that matter. He's a lousy pit reporter. It's all about him and, he's as bad as Michael Waltrip pimping certain sponsor companies everytime he's on air. Does anyone know if he owns a marketing company or is a sponsor rep for certain companies?
