In-Progress At Daytona: 50th Daytona 500 On Fox Sports

The build-up to this race on Fox has been supported by the hard work of both the SPEED and Fox crews for the last several weeks. Beginning with pre-season testing, SPEED has filled the role of hosting almost all of the on and off-track NASCAR TV programming including the Sprint Cup qualifying.

Now, the torch is passed once again to the most experienced NASCAR TV crew in the history of the sport. No group has been deeper in experience and the understanding of the inner-workings of NASCAR. The intensity of Larry McReynolds, the enthusiasm of Darrell Waltrip and the calm leadership of Mike Joy have formed an on-air team that provides NASCAR fans all the information needed to enjoy a race.

On pit road, Fox uses the low-key but very effective group of Matt Yocum, Steve Byrnes, Dick Berggren and Krista Voda to follow-up the on-going stories of the race. This group has quietly provided the information that allows the announcers in the booth to be fearless in asking questions and expecting answers.

Jeff Hammond continues to provide the counterpoint to Larry McReynolds. His style is so very different that he often points out the aspects of competition and mechanical issues that require a little different perspective than McReynolds. During the 500, especially with the tire and engine issues waiting in the wings, Hammond may wind-up providing some key information.

This telecast will provide the foundation for a season of live Sprint Cup coverage. The importance of this race on TV to set the tone for the year cannot be understated. Last season, this TV package went downhill once Fox departed, and never recovered. This season, there is a renewed sense of optimism on the part of the NASCAR TV partners. Hopefully, this one telecast will start the ball rolling in the right direction.

This post will serve to host your comments about the Daytona 500 on Fox Sports. I would stress to you that this is not a racing board, it is a blog that focuses on the TV coverage of the sport. Please keep the focus of your comments on the TV coverage aspects of the race today.

To add your opinion, just click on the COMMENTS button below and follow the easy instructions. We do not need your email, and there is nothing to join. We would just like to know what you think about the Daytona 500 coverage from Fox Sports. Thank you for taking the time to stop by.

HUGE waste of time on that last turn NOT to let us see the cars from above and not the insipid gopher cam.

&^%$#@!?

This is the daytona not a short track...let us see the cars wide angle and NOT GOOGLE shots or zoom/gopher cams. If I want to see under the cars i can go to Jiffy lube and stand under the cars on the lifts

good job by Fox with replays of 6 & 17

overall still think Fox camera coverage has been balanced. Two seconds here and there of gopher cam is not unreasonable. If all you want is to watch dots going in a circle try trackpass or something like that.

Sophia said...

I did not say a thing about watching DOTS...not a fan of the GOOGLE earth deal..just NORMAL camera shots...I think JD said the best way it to see headlights not tail lights in one column...or to see the packs of car.

and not so much in car cams

I don't remember hearing Jeff Gordon had a serious car problem until the last break...did I miss that while I grabbed food or wat that kept quiet until he left.

Sorry that HUGE GOPHER GRAPHIC is annoying. I am not entertained by GIMMICKS

COOLBEANS

ENGINE SOUNDS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you Fox

great in car shots specially from Dale jr.

Tony doesn't seem to want to work with Dale Jr. anymore.

I don't think Tony wants to play with anybody this year :)

It's becoming obvious to me that Fox front-loaded their breaks. There's been a lot more laps between commercial breaks in these last 50 laps of the race.

i hope ur right Alex they should go the rest of the way commercial free (yeah, right)

Well, fair is fair..I like the guys in the booth but the commercials are nuts.

and they should use SPEED camera style work

why is Joy talking about stupid trophy? is there no news from the pits?

who's going for two tires, four tires, no tires, gas & go

Oh who cares, right?

alex said...

I don't think it's as bad as the draft tracker. At least cars don't drive past the gopher cam with colored flames behind them.

The camera doesn't bother me and it serves its purpose of giving you the sense of speed, it's like the one they have attached to the outside wall at most tracks. But I do think it's stupid to use that camera when the sun is blinding its view.

i'm going to hold you to that for the cookies

sorry the gopher cam is way over used...I don't like the zoom deal either...just show me REAL PERSPECTIVE of racing

Trying to catch up with the comments, y'all have noticed the same things we've noticed.

Does the booth seem rusty to y'all? Normally they're the best They seem not quite on it, same with pit folks. Maybe in Fontana it will click.

We're laughing here because DW said JPM had to go because Kurt Busch was on his tail...DW was explaining it rationally and maybe JPM didn't do it on purpose. Maybe.

But secretly I'm sooo glad JPM knocked Boywer out since Bowyer did the same thing to JPM last year and was laughing about it on the radio and in a TV interview after.

As he noted on NASCAR in Primetime, JPM doesn't forget! Y'all better remember that. (insert evil laugh here) Love him.

Anonymous said...

To clarify (with Claritin), Bowyer didn't knock JPM out of the Daytona 500 last year. It was another Cup race.

Anonymous said...

Do you think there would be less complaining about the TV coverage if the race was even remotely exciting??

Tripp said...

Are you kidding me? This is a great plate race and I don't like plate racing.

Wait for 5 to go.

I was wondering if they were going to mention how well Robby Gordon was doing.

Anonymous said...

restrictor plate races are never exciting except for crashes and the last 10 laps

Fox does not seem to be meeting their own high standards for broadcasts. Many stories just went untold and they failed to update problems that various teams had during the race. Pit reporters seem to be nonexistent.

Hopefully they are back to speed at Fontana

Sophia said...

Let's not FOCUS on the dang WIFE the rest of the race.

There are MANY CARS in this race.

I EXPECT to see more than JUST THE WINNING CAR CROSS the line or I give up on NASCAR.

Another ambush of NO SEEING the cars finished and I am done.

I can smell the "Director's cut" ala PSPN already :(

winner, pit crew, commercial...

Fox is enamored with this damn gopher cam. And they act like it's never been used before. If I remember right ESPN had a similar cam for their Thursday Night Thunder series years ago.

Erik said...

Fox has been doing what they've always have been doing. Nothing has changed.

JD and others have been constantly blasting the other network partners so much, claiming they are far inferior to what Fox has done, setting Fox high upon a pedestal.

Though, now Fox is back, reality sets in where they weren't any better than the rest of them.

and Vince or whomever, THANKS FOR NOTICING the Gopher Cam OBSESSION.

Shoddy camera work in many ways tonight. If they would dump the ZOOM cam, that RIDICULOUS OVER USED GOPHER cam, less blimp GOOGLE EARTH shots and give us more wide angle, close up on PACKS of cars, would've been better.

And not good follow up as usual either...but, it's fox...so...I remember now..their cam work is not perfect.

Anonymous said...

I never understand why Nascar TV announcers have to constantly tell the audience that they are watching a great, exciting race. Shouldn't the racing speak for itself? I dont remember Jack Buck or John Madden ever telling the viewers not to go "to the kitchen" or that something great is about to happen. The last lap is particularly over-hyped.

Each winter I forget have awful DW is as a broadcaster.

Steve L. said...

I agree the bumper cam and in car cameras are over used when tight racing is on the track. That near the end of the race was not the right time to use those camera shots.

more production issues... Voda is still talking and Byrnes is halfway thru his question to Busch which we didn't hear

FWIW

On top of this house gripes with Gopher cam, the split screen and stupid BUMPBER cam RUINED the final laps for us.

Should've had better camera angles.

I do not understand this poor camera work for the serious fan WATCHING from home.

I can't believe I am so disappointed with FOX but got a sinking feeling when they mentioned "their new toy" Gopher cam.

Sophia said...

Agreed about the Matt interview..what was his question to Kurt...simultaneous interviews do not work.

But I am more miffed at the camera work at the end.

Vince said...

Too many usless graphics. The only graphic I want to see is the ticker at the top telling me the running order. Too much in car, too much split screen, too many closeups. WIDE SHOTS so we can see more of the action. Less is more.

The race director for Fox needs to go to his local short track and watch a race. Do you watch the drivers wives in the last 10 laps? Do you watch the pit crew in the last 10 laps, do you look in car with your binoculars to try and see a driver that you can't see anyway? No you idiots. You watch the race for the lead or who ever is racing for position. Sorry, sorry camera work today Fox.

All in all... not a bad day for Fox. If nothing else, the excitement heard from the boys in the booth is fun to hear.

Some of y'all need to look for something positive in the coverage presented by the various NASCAR "partners"... The glass is not always empty, although one would get that feeling watching some of your blog entries.

Of course there are improvements to be made... some networks more than others, but I have found over the last couple of weeks that they have all stepped it up this year; Fox, Speed and even ESPN.

I am looking forward to a great year... here's hoping for great times and great fun!

Sorry I didn't realize we were on the 2nd page and thought everyone went away. I appreciated the replay of the last lap and frozen picture of the top 5-10 finishers. Too many in car shots, gopher cam didn't bother me kind of liked it actually. Coverage got better at the end, I think the guys were rusty and possible exhusted it's been a long 2 weeks. Evidently MW had damage but I don't know why, so much for DW being all about Mickey and MWR. Never got a thru the field perhaps that is because this is Daytona and it kind on doesn't mean much since where you are with 20 to go has nothing to do with where you finish on many occasions, but would have still liked to hear about how everyone was doing.

Anonymous said...

Yes forgot the Kim Burton shots. Why, Why, Why! Disgusted with Fox. It was the DW and Hammond show all day. Will Hammond please shut up!

IPingUPing said...

Overall I give the coverage a B+.

Things I liked: Radio rewind with the in car audio mix. Long commercial free segment at the end. Mike Joy's steady call. Ryan Newman's car full of smoke. Plenty of post-race interviews. Even Gopher Cam was good in limited quantities.

Things that can use work: Local affiliate (Atlanta) break ins, missing green flag pit stops, Larry Mac's speechifying, more pit-road reporters, give us the lucky dog every time, why did Andretti go the the garage. More details on Waltrip and Johnson after the Reagan wreck, they were the front row starters.

Those are the things that jump out at me.

Anonymous said...

Based on Fox's standards it was about 7/10.

Compared to the other networks it would have been a 8/10 or 9/10.

Anonymous said...

Fox is still way better than espn.
Tony's interview ended and he walked away Voda was talking about race position ( sounded like Kyle) when Steve was on w/Kurt.

I agree the gopher cam was a bit much, but not as bad as draft trak.
Most of the field was shown crossing, so that was good.
A solid B if I was grading.

Anonymous said...

B- from me. Though all came across as very likeable. They should have had the finish drop down list of the first 15-20 cars at the line. All races should have that.

Tony was walking away after that first and only question that Krista asked (such a baby! I hope we don't hear that Krista was pushing him to hard!) I'm sure the director didn't want to see him go completely out of camera shot and immediately called for a switch to the next interview.

Krissie Newman is one of the prettiest and most unpretentious wives out there. Look at her in her ponytail and sweatshirt - she still looks so pretty and isn't seeking the spotlight at all.

Congrats to Ryan. What I want to see is Rusty Wallace's face at 10 PM tonight in trying to fake happiness for Ryan! (Note Ryan said he's never had teammates to help him before Kurt came last year.) Tune into NASCAR Now at 10 Eastern tonight people, to see a great acting job!

Also want to see Ray Evernham on NASCAR Now tonight and what he thinks. He's a Great crew chief yes, but Hendrick said a week or two ago that Ray did not want to share info with other teams like Terry Labonte's when he was Jeff's crew chief. And after Ray left that's when Hendrick decided all info would be shared, creating the success they had the past few years.

I can't help but think that has happened with the Dodges. Ray is out of power now, and the Dodge head guy did say he sat everybody down and said this year information WILL be shared among all Dodges.

And you got six Dodges in the top 10 all of a sudden. Hmmm....

So did anyone catch the ad for Michigan Speedway with a guy in a shirt that reads "THINGS TO DO: YOUR SISTER. YOUR MOM."

I'm glad the fine minds at Michigan International put *that* guy through to represent their audience.

Stay classy, Michigan.

Sophia said...

Labonte 11th

I saw a brief crossing of the finish line but no finishing order. Again, unusual camera and graphics work. I scream because last year ESPN would leave the winning graphic down for 2 seconds. Took forever to show the finishing order on fox.

As mentioned, way too many graphics elsewhere and the stupid over use of BAD CAMERA DECISIONS.

Frankly I was glad BURTON didn't win..the split screen would've again been WASTED on one google shot of race and WIFE/CC shot.

Geez

I somehow expected better but enough from me. Most of us old enough to know what good camera work means (as opposed to toys and fancy MTV Camera/artsy cam tricks, useless graphics)

THEN AGAIN Fox Sports did "lead the way" or ruin, depending on folks outlook, on the gimmick/graphics department and it's getting worse.

Anonymous said...

Yes, Stewart was most definitely walking away from Krista. That wasn't a production issue in going to the next interview so fast, no way they wanted that (him walking away) on camera.

It's going to be a long 38 weeks with Smoke, maybe that haircut he said he's getting will ease some of his psychic pain.

Sophia said...

Ugh. missed the ad for Michigan and the tasteless T shirt.

Anonymous said...

This was among the most unwatchable productions of a NASCAR race I've ever seen.

Gopher cam? Really? First of all, throwing aside the stuipd cartoon gopher, the camera added nothing to the broadcast. 1/3 of the screen was a blurry piece of asphalt. The other 2/3 or the screen was a weird angle of cars you could barely make out because they were going by so fast.

These announcers on Fox give the impression that they're openly rooting for certain drivers. Their coverage of the Toyotas leads me to believe, especially at the end, that they were glad to see them lose.

DW has to go. He adds nothing to the broadcast and spends most of the time acting like the buffoon he was when he once won the race and did the "Icky shuffle" in victory lane. Geez, and they say Michael's the dumb one.

Also, while it doesn't bother me that they only show the winner at the end of the race. I don't need to see their wife/girlfriend/mistress. I want to see the guys who put the effort into winning the race. Driver, crew chief, crew. I think all of those guys deserve to be seen celebrating. But I don't need to see the wife, who hasn't really made any contribution to the race win. Thankfully though, although John and his merry band of followers will disagree, I didn't have to see 15 other cars slowly going around the track while the announcers spoke about how their day went. You win, you get shown. Hey, during the Super Bowl, I'm not upset when they don't show video of what the Rams are doing right now. Those who win, deserve recognition. Those who don't, deserve a shot to try harder next week. My favorite driver is Matt Kenseth. Once he was out, I didn't need to see him finishing over the choice of shots of the winner. That's what the internet is for. I can just look up the standings and see where he's at without having to look at a bottom of the pack ride while Newman is robbed of his day in the sun.

IPingUPing said...

Two other things to add to the negative list: 1) the "NASCAR" song they started and ended the race with. 2) They didn't spend more time showing the former winners.

Sophia said...

Ok, I thought Tony walked away but could not figured out why he was so angry...then again, he has been cranky in SPEEDweeks.

Don't know what his deal is but I wish he would snap out of it...so wasn't a production issue..thanks for the clarification...I take THAT GRIPE back.

THE GOPHER CAM WAS DONE BY ESPN STARTING IN 1988 AS 'PAVEMENT CAM'
ONLY IN ESPN'S CASE, THE CARS ACTUALLY RODE OVER IT AND IT WORKED ALL RACE.
FOX'S CLAIMS AT INNOVATION ARE BULL. ONCE AGAIN THEY STEAL OTHER PEOPLES IDEAS AND CLAIM THEM AS THEIR OWN
THIS TELECAST WAS A C+ AT BEST

Tripp said...

I'd give Fox a B+ for good coverage of a better than average, but not great 500.

The major miss was not going through the field. Yes, positions can change every lap in a plate race, but I want more information on the top 15 or 20. People like Robby Gordon got short shrift.

I'm with many on wanting wide shots, but they don't convey the energy that tighter shots and speed shots convey. They're selling the sizzle, not the steak.

As someone said, the gopher cam is just another speed shot, like the cams on the outside walls. I like the different perspective. I can't really blame Fox for running the gopher cartoon as much as they did. They want to promote it. It does convey action in a big way. Since these cam locations have been installed at a number of track, expect it to show up on the other networks, with a different name, as well. With ESPN, it'll probably have computer generated flames coming out of it.

The guys in the booth were very good, as one would expect. Mike Joy has a deep respect for the sport's history and dropping the Junior Johnson and the trophy story was appropriate and in character for Mike. It was reported that most of the drivers didn't know who Harley Earl was.

Good job overall.

bevo said...

Got to agree with anonymous there - spending 10 seconds showing the cars finish and a graphic of the finishing order would have "robbed Newman of his day in the sun".

Brilliant!!!

I don't know that Fox said they invented it. WRC broadcasts have been using for over a decade. Burying a camera in the dirt for cars to run over goes back to the 1960s.

There ain't nothin' new. Just ask Paul McCartney.

DW is NEVER going away. Get used to it and stop wasting time telling us you don't like him.

Same for girlfriend/wife shots. All the networks do that now and they're not going to stop. So quit whining about it please.

Also never ceases to amaze me that people take a 10 second TV shot of somebody like Stewart and blow it out of proportion. He just raced his guts out for 3 1/2 hours, lost the Daytona 500 in the last lap and has to answer stupid questions from some pit reporter. I'd like to see anybody else in that position.

Anonymous said...

ESPN NEWS has been covering since 7:30. they just went to another break and said coming up, Ryan Newman, I assume either press conference or live because they already showed his FOX interview.

Sportscenter is on but I haven't been watching.

Usually the ESPN NEWS anchor guys are not too knowledgeable but one of those guys knew Tony Eury Jr was Dale Jrs Cousin and knew they didn't get along for a while in the past. That came up because Shannon Spake was trying to get Jr to blame someone for some decision at some particular lap. she asked who made the decision on that lap. He kinda looked at her like she was crazy, (but politely). And he said he wasn't going to make any excuses he was proud of his team. So the anchor guy figured shannon must have been talking about Tony Jr.

Shannon must be hard to hear at the track. Like Kurt Busch last year, Jr didn't seem like he could hear her when she asked her question. He said "come again?" and she had to repeat. He wasn't mean or anything, but something about her voice must not project.

I think Shannon is going to be the reporter that the driver's aren't liking this year. Just a hunch.

Without tone of voice or stupid ;-0 thingie, were you serious in your "brilliant" comment or were you kidding?

While Fox did briefly show the finish, I thought it was short and lacking in info.

Usually FOX shows the graphic down the screen.

I think they have a new camera crew...or director....NOT a good thing.

How were the MRN guys tonight? Did they just focus on the WINNER like for the truck race? I was too lazy to drag out the boombox..

Update to previous: they're showing the press conference now on ESPN News waiting for Ryan, Roger Penske and Roy McCauley are already there.

Fox during the race already covered Dale Jr missing a pitstop because there was too much chatter on the radio and no one told Jr to pit.

Espn is just looking for controversy as usual.

Six Dodges in the top eight! Bye-bye Ray Evernham! Don't let the door hit ya. Thanks for the reminder I do want to see what Ray says on NASCAR Now tonight - and if he can explain why Dodges did so well. This morning they were all making their predictions on NaSCAR Now and Ray said a Toyota or a Hendrick car would win today.

I don't have any problem with them showing wives/girlfriends after the race, like they did with Ryan's wife. And that hug with his dad. I think that kind of stuff belongs there. Remember his wife had to go through his car breaking apart at the 500 a few years back. Breaking into pieces and rolling over a million times. She's probably just happy to have him in one piece, never mind winning. She may not be part of the official team, but she's still important.

I don't really need to see the split screen during the race like with Kim Burton though.

I heard part of Tony's session in the media center and it sounded like he felt he made a mistake and as a result lost the race, which would explain his bad mood.

Also, my impression has always been that Newman was the one that would not share with Rusty - which I still cannot understand Penske allowing, especially since Rusty was a sizeable, minority owner of the team until he retired.

On to VL on SPEED for those of us lucky to have that station.

EDIT" NOBODY has a problem with WIVES or family, etc AFTER the race. It's the SPLIT SCREEN OBSESSION DURING the race we were commenting on...show us the race.

Not the person on the sidelines..it can be better timed as opposed to ruining what's going on across the finish line and showing us the winning order.

A few moments of that does not STEAL the spotlight from the WINNER.

Anonymous said...

After watching the race I am pleased with the product. Yes FOX made some errors and over used the gopher cam. But you have to expect some errors after being on the air for 5.5 hours.

Something that shocked me is some of the comments in this blog, mostly by anons. The guys in the booth are not "idiots". Mike Joy is the best in the business. FOX has one of the best booth teams.

Talking about the Daytona 500 trophy was not "stupid". If your a NASCAR fan, you realize the trophy is not "Stupid" and means a lot to the driver who wins. And the comments about NASCAR and FOX working together to stage the race for a "Phantom debris caution" is ludacris.

All in all the Broadcast was good. Some of the comments I read on here are out of hand and im shocked some were not deleted. I cannot wait for the new Daly Planet to come out so we can get rid of some of the rediculous anon comments.

Give FOX some constructice criticism. Comments that "you idiots", "you suck", and "stupid" don't help the production crew out at all.

bevo said...

What's with the Evernham hate? He brought in a partner to handle all of the sponsor and day to day business stuff so he could get back to a more hands on style with the cars. Can't say I'm a fan of his or anything but the guy does know a few things about cars.

Thanks for the update on Stewart...as I saw the final few laps on another station (without all the split screen junk) I can see how Tony lost the race on the final lap or so and was probably VERY FRUSTRATED and upset.

Understandably so.

Still the boy has been mighty unhappy for weeks and I hope that improves.

I don't want to get static when I wear his Jacket to the store in the next few days. Been way too cold to wear it lately. But I am a big Tony fan and fan of many drivers.

The Evernham dislike comes from the fact that he's NOT working on his cars. If you've kept up with his interviews this week, he said he is too burned out to devote time to the business side OR to the cars. But he's not too burned out to work for ESPN and that's what he decided to do, he said he wanted to have some "fun" as a minority owner.

After he said he was going to work on the cars and that's why he was selling, he's NOT doing it, he's doing his TV job for ESPN instead. Google him for his interviews this week.

He's not doing anything with GEM so he better not try to take credit for it. I'll do my best to get the word out - because I think a lot of people -like you- think he's still working on the cars and the drivers like Kahne will tell you that's not the case.

The positives for Fox - like the easy to read ticker at the top. Mike Joy is still the best since Ken Squire. Larry Mac has some good insight. DW?...good when he puts aside the goofy stuff which happens less and less nowadays. Generally good camera shots for the first race of the season.

Thanks for clarifying things. I thought you were kidding on your 'Brilliant' statement but never like to assume anything...especially on message board or email...easy to misinterpret.

Oh, and I was never gonna post a recipe to the anon. it was a figure of speech saying I would share cookies for all if FOX remained commercial free.

But they honked me off with the lousy SPLIT SCREEN and Bumper cam on the last lap....sigh.

(ok this word veri thingie has also been using some fancy, handwritten looking deal that's difficult to read....like old handwritten books from the 1400's!! >:-o

JD, have you ever thought about an online poll so people could rate the TV production of the race? Say 1-10 scale or letter grades.

Overall my impression from today's posts is Fox would get a 7 or 8 out of 10 or about a "B"

My complaint about the race and speed week was annoucers for both fox and speed bringing up facts, such as no foreign brand has won in Nascar Cup since 1954(or so). Then they don't tell you the make of the car that won! Another one during the bud shoot-out the annoucers mentioned the ARCA race took place earlier, but did not mention who won. Finish the thought! Tell us viewers the answers. Also, Fox came back from a comercial today and never told us why there was a caution. It must of been the mystery debris, but the did't mention it. Otherwise, I prefer Fox over anyone else.
thanx for listening

Fox needs to use less in car and 'gimmick' angles. It's impossible to keep track of what's happening with them from such a tunnel view. What happened to the days when the network would use the in car scoring monitors to put up the finishing order as cars came across the finish line? Was Robby Gordon in the race before the last lap? I don't recall any 'thru the field' at any time. Too bad. It looks as if Sprint has co-opted the 'draft tracker' to use in their new ads...only now they have 'faces' on the cars. The more in car shots they used during the end of the race, the harder it was to get a sense of what was happening.

Hey Folks,

Thanks for all the great comments, there is now a new column up about the Daytona 500 which will allow you to post comments.

Thanks!

Whatever, John, your pets who have names are the ones calling the broadcast team names and you'd know it if you scroll through these posts.

Vince at 7:12

SophiaZ123 too many times to count.

don't blame us anons and let others blame us. You'll see when people are registered that those with names cause just as much or more trouble as anons. Good luck with that because you won't be able to blame us.

The reason you see criticism here is because JD asks for opinions ABOUT THE BROADCAST!

Lack of follow up info on drivers who have engine problems.

Or bad camera placement

Or poor camera work

Or gimmicks

Or unnecessary graphics.

And we compliment and say good job when called for. Like the great minute we get of ENGINE SOUNDS sans talking

(need more of those Fox)

So you need not sound sanctimonious because some of us gripe. The reason we over do the griping is because otherwise, the NASCAR BROADCAST PARTNERS do not get it.

The end

:-)

But Sophiaz123, Brett's point was that the anons are allededly calling names like buffoon and idiots and stupid. You all with names are doing the same thing. Is that necessary to include in your criticism of a broadcast? I think not. If it is, you need to work on your vocabulary.

And when people do critique the TV production they are taken to task by other people who disagree.

Why can't people just post their opinions and not be attacked by others or be deleted.

I never called the guys in the booth names?

An inanimate object can be a stupid thing and bad decision making.

Sorry...I just call it like I see it. Also, I capitalize words to emphazise (sp? tired) things as I am too busy to type in bold...but it is not shouting.

Typing an entire post is considered shouting and rude.

Besides there can be idiotic decisions made and their often are.

That's why fewer are watching on TV of ff with tapes and DVR.

Simple as that.

I am not going to get into a debate with a stranger about this.

Time to go read the new column and give my two pennies there.

bevo- Yes, you are right, I don't think Rusty ever did have a teammate he got along with well - except maybe Mayfield, after they were no longer teammates - and I was/am an Earnhardt fan, not a Rusty fan. However, it always seemed to me it was up to Newman to try to get along with and share with Rusty, a past champion and part owner of Newman's car. For all of Rusty's faults, I always thought Newman did more damage to the team than Rusty and, in particular, I still cannot understand why Roger Penske did not put a stop to the disagreements. The lack of teamwork at Penske South still amazes me in light of consistent teamwork at the Penske CART and IRL teams.

JD- 305 comments and no food fight is quite a testament to you. Thank you.

I don't know where to start, but let me try to express my disappointment in FOX's broadcast.

Too many production mistakes to name, bad tape rolls and bad audio (not sure what you call it, but obviously they had taped interviews and they aired on each other).

The balance through out the broadcast was very heavy Mike Joy (I mean he wouldn't shut up), and very little from the Hollywood Hotel and the pit row reporters. In fact, they were pretty absent over the final third of the race. Where the heck did they go? They missed too many stories. Then Larry MacReynolds said, "Steve said during the break", I mean why couldn't steve tell us?

The gopher cam was the same thing Espn used on Thursday Night Thunder. Near the end of the race, I was wondering what happened to my favorite broadcasting crew, because they disappointed us. I give them a C- for what should have been a historic day.

He just raced his guts out for 3 1/2 hours, lost the Daytona 500 in the last lap and has to answer stupid questions from some pit reporter. I'd like to see anybody else in that position.

You can, after every race, because TV shows lots of other drivers, and all of them answer the same questions with a lot more class and antagonism that Stewart.

They're adults, not sullen children.

This is the daytona not a short track...let us see the cars wide angle and NOT GOOGLE shots or zoom/gopher cams. If I want to see under the cars i can go to Jiffy lube and stand under the cars on the lifts
Geez, Sophia, have you EVER been satisfied with anything you've seen on TV?

You sure post a lot.

I don't think anything they do would ever be good enough for you.

Thanks Fox and team for an enjoyable broadcast. There are ups and downs in any tv broadcast of any sport, but your ups far exceeded your downs. Keep up the good work.

Is it possible that we could actually WATCH the race instead of all their filler stuff? We missed more lead changes than we saw; we got to see 4 laps of coverage and then were gone to a nascar racing commercial for over 4 laps; I know they have to get their commercials in, but do they have to do it every 4 laps? The reason we are tuned into the coverage is because we want to watch the race live, not so we can see all their cute little videos of past races, of past winners, or other videos that are not needed during the race. I thought the coverage was horrible and now I think pay per view wouldn't be bad if it got rid of the darn commercials. I think I will listen to the next race on the radio-at least they tell you what you are missing.
