In-Progress From Atlanta: Sprint Cup Race On Fox

After some bad weather on Saturday, the NASCAR on Fox gang is enjoying cool temperatures and sunny skies from the Atlanta Motor Speedway.

The Fox coverage begins at 1:30PM, with the green flag scheduled to fall slightly before 2:15PM. Coverage of the race is scheduled to run until 6PM Eastern Time.

Chris Myers hosts the pre-race coverage from the Hollywood Hotel, with Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Hammond alongside. Look for continued coverage of the Team 99 penalties and a preview of the close finishes that this track seems to provide.

Mike Joy hosts the race coverage, with Waltrip and Larry McReynolds alongside in the broadcast booth. Down on pit road are Dick Berggren, Matt Yocum, Steve Byrnes and Krista Voda.

Despite the tire issues, this race has the potential to be one of the best broadcasts of the season in any series. Fox continues to tinker with some TV elements and viewers should watch for the "quad split" effect on pit stops that shows four different pictures. Fox uses a good ticker for information, and continues to offer outstanding integration between all the announcers on the broadcast team.

This page will host your comments about the Sprint Cup race from Atlanta on Fox Sports. To add your comment, simply click on the COMMENTS button below and follow the easy instructions. The rules for posting are on the right side of the main page, and this blog is for TV-related comments. Thank you for spending time with us.

for DW, there has been 8 different leaders.

And unfortunately 4 of those were cars staying out to lead a lap under yellow or during green flag stops - 24, 9, 83, 16.

the first Sadler caution, we did not have a look that would show you anything but smoke. It would have looked sloppy to show it. Sometimes you just have to trust us.

We did have a good look at the second spin, which we showed.

March 9, 2008 4:55 PM

Nice info, but I don't have reason to trust you guys. I want to see the reason for the caution, even if the shot is smoky. If you have the shot replay it; we'll make the call if it's "sloppy".

These races have long had Jaques Debris and phantom cautions as an issue until Stewart said something. You and NASCAR have to earn that trust back, not expect it.

thanks anon 4:54! I didn't realize that-my bad.

Erik, some of these people would demand to see their driver with his 35th place trophy when the race is over. I do believe most people want to see the cars that are still in the hunt.

TV Guy, is that you Bobby?

The big delima. Do viewers want to see a battle betweens cars 4 laps down without a prayer to win. Or, do they want to see the lead lap cars that still in the race?

March 9, 2008 4:56 PM

I know when I go to a race, most times I'm watching battles in the pack, much more than the leader. I would think most viewers would feel the same way.

We almost need one camera on the cars battling for the Lucky Dog spot.

Thats a battle in and of itself today.

Real yawner today.

I love it when the talent admit when they are wrong and they dont ieven know it:
DW: Lap 70 to Go...
"We havent talked about about bobby labonte alot today but what a good run"

Anonymous said...

It would have looked sloppy to show it. Sometimes you just have to trust us.

You have the analyst saying he wasn't sure if the driver hit. That brings it to our attention even more. If the shot has smoke and we can't see anything, at least show it so the analyst can say, can't really tell from that angle. That's been done before and in this situatuion (suspicious caution called with very few on the lead lap) it was needed.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Did they say what the reason was that JJ is so far off the pace?

Erik said...

What was harsh about the comment? I just posed a question about what the production team has to ponder in deciding what to show the viewers.

Have to have comments from Elliott Sadler once he makes it back to the infield care center or the garage.

He has to have something to say about these tires.

Lets Hear From Him !!

stricklinfan82 said...

I agree with TV guy that if the cameras didn't catch an accident there's no point in showing a replay that just shows smoke. Unfortunately they can't have a camera on all 43 cars so sometimes we miss incidents. Fox 3D could be used for some incidents the cameras missed but in this case that wouldn't settle the dispute about whether or not he hit the wall.

Very good point by Larry Mac to mention the SAFER barrier on the inside wall after all of last week's talk on that subject.

Anonymous said...

Hey guys, if they say Sadler spun out and it didn't happen then the people at the track would have a HUGE field day of complaining. Just cause DW said it didn't look like the 18 hit anything doesn't mean it didn't happen. I can understand not believing the debris cautions that don't show the debris but not believing someone spinning out is plain stupid. Plus NASCAR watches the broadcast and would not like the broadcasters out right lying.

Too bad for Kyle Petty 43rd right now. I don't think we will see much of him after race 5.

Sorry meant the 19!!

the #48 issue....

just like last week at Vegas, we dont get to hear from Knaus about why they are out to lunch.

Knaus is getting a free pass the last 2 weeks from FOX pit reporters

TV Guy...Marvin Cale is PO'd...he said meet him in the compound after the race and he's pulling your hard card. You're a freakin' celebrity! Next week you'll have your own blog from your own sofa at home.

Have they talked about Vikers at all this race?
I mean top 10 for that team is like winning a championship. Heck on the lead lap is a major accomplishment. Never mind the fact that there are only 13 cars on the lead lap.

This should be an interesting post-race media center event on ESPNEWS. The comments should be very news-worthy, especially if Edwards wins.

Too bad for Kyle Petty 43rd right now. I don't think we will see much of him after race 5.

That might be a little premature. Unfortunately NASCAR allows something called "point swapping". I'm sure The King will swap the points on the 43 and 45 cars after race 5 to take advantage of Bobby Labonte's past champion's provisional, just like Penske did with the 77/2 at the start of the year.

If this does happen as I predict it should make for interesting talk on TV shows like NASCAR Now and of course... Tradin' Paint with Kyle Petty.

Anonymous said...

anon 5:02, you just can't compare actually being at any sporting event with watching it on tv. You have the advantage of being able to see everything, tv cameras just can't do that.

Yes, Vickers should have already gotten some attention. As they run he's 10 in points, he was just outside top 12 coming into the race

Daly Planet Editor said...

Wow, here is the big story. This should be interesting.

I appreciate your work and commenting here...I appreciate the race coming to us at home...I think the main gripe for TV is the tape over the GREEN FLAG racing stuff as opposed to split screen. But I know YOU aren't making those decisions.

Still, it's nice when insiders take the time to communicate with us. Thanks for that

Ken-Michigan said...

Would love to hear the audio / in car cam, of Edwards #99 coming up thru the gears on the restart.

I think he broke something coming up thru the gears.

Surprised the booth hasnt pointed out that a good number of cars other than petty that were top 35 last year might be out after next week the way they're running today. Hornish, Franchitti, Blaney, Regan smith and Petty are all below in driver's points, and yeley and Mayfield are right on the bubble. The owners points will match up pretty much. Those guys falling out with cars that have been longtime top 35 cars after Bristol will have repercussions- like lost rides.

oftikpThey talked about the top 35 on Tradin' Paint and Raceday. Nate's Monday headline was about the top 35 and Kyle acknowledged that he probably wouldn't be in it. The Raceday guys talked about the top 35 after talking with Franchitti because he is in danger of not being in the top 35.

TV Guy,
I think you might be missing the point of this blog a little bit.

Its to comment on the TV coverage of a sport that we all are fans of. It gets nit picky around here simply from the fact that if your on this website, you are a total nascar nut. This isn't the place for a casual fan . So yeah alot of people (including me sometimes) get real real picky about the coverage. But realize they are hardcore fans that know what they are talking about for the most part.

As to having people watch what you do for a living, I'm a Police Officer, I'll switch with ya any time :)

Hope to see you around here for all the races. Your perspective is interesting especially on the Saddler not getting a replay.

bevo said...

A few years ago ESPN did a behind the scenes broadcast of a Florida State football game - game on ESPN, production truck on 2, isolated cameras on the QB's on U. They showed how hectic it got. It would be great if Fox or ESPN did that for a race and everyone could see how it's done.

I'm sorry if the critiques bother you but just know that we do appreciate the hard work you guys do and we do recognize that overall you all do a very good job.

Most of us on this site try to be constructive and list specific things we like or dislike and how they could be improved, and often give credit where credit is due when we like certain elements of your coverage.

With any group of random people on the Internet you're going to have a few rotten eggs in the bunch but hopefully you can look past those people and appreciate the fact that most of us are only trying to help.

Well, just what Fox really needed. Good race, off on time and good weather. Edwards has a good showing, and then the drama of him falling out of the race. The remaining story is Busch and the first Toyota win.

Erik's conrarian comments demonstrate that he's not a real race fan at all. When I go to races, I don't fixate on the leader--like most others, I look at the whole field for the most intersting action.

But his comments do explain why ESPN has such a tough time covering races in a way that makes race fans happy--they, like him, don't get it.

Tony, whining as usual. He's becoming the latest incarnation of Jeff Gordon's old personality: Always something to complain about.

Does Tony have a dog in the tire fight? Is there a Hoosier agenda here or do you think that is just how he feels after a tough day like today?

Anyone have a clue on that one?

Tony's a BIG Hoosier fan. He routinely complains about Goodyear and never, ever says anything complimentary about their tires.

stricklinfan82 said...

Great interview with Tony Stewart. If you've been reading this blog all day you know that I agree with him totally on this issue.

If Fox had mentioned this issue during their pre-race show as I recommended then they would have gotten a heck of a payback for their pre-race storyline but oh well. They certainly can't ignore it any more.

Daly Planet Editor said...

ESPNEWS about to go live even on a huge day of hoop. Wow! That is a huge change. I am floored.

Anonymous said...

ok, tony just flat-out handed all the post-race shows next week something to work with: tires! goodyear best start lining up their people and getting their answers ready b/c, if the various nascar journalists are on the game this week, goodyear is in a very, very bad place right now.
like him or not, stewart says what he honestly believes must be said. he's been edging around it all week (as have other drivers) but it's clear that he's fed up with the non-response response tactic.
goodyear? good luck.

Hoosier is an official sponsor of the Eldora Speedway, which Stewart owns.

Ken-Michigan said...

JD -

I think Tony is saying that if Goodyear continues to bring tires like these, NASCAR might as well schedule a dirt track race and maybe...ummm....Eldora could be the choice.

I think NASCAR & Goodyear should be embaressed, IMO.

Vince said...

Tony mentioned Hoosier and Firestone could probably come up with a better tire, so I think they just want a little softer tire. Have you heard the tires squeal as the cars peel out of the pits. Squeal = really hard tire, as in no grip.

stricklinfan82 said...

JD,

He's obviously from the same place Hoosier Tire is but I don't think that has anything to do with it. MANY other drivers voiced similar concerns and by the lack of racing today I don't think you can blame Tony's comments on being a "homer" for Hoosier. His thoughts seem to make a lot of sense don't you think?

I've liked Tony since his IRL days but this part of his personality I can do without. He's too good of a driver to use Goodyear as a crutch.

I have one word to describe that post race news conference:

MESMERIZING.

I mean, I literally could not move while Tony and Dale Jr were talking; they were so honest about what they thought Tony especially, but did you hear Junior putting NASCAR on notice about the tires at Darlington?

Being able to listen to it unfiltered is amazing. I would never be able to get that kind of understanding of their frustration from the edited video or print comments later. Thank you ESPN NEWS.

Did you hear the anchor guy say WOW! when they cut away? I think even he was amazed.

Anonymous said...

bevo? i understand that stewart gets on one's last nerve sometimes but, in his defense (altho' he certainly doesn't need me to defend him!) -- he is NOT the only driver to complain about these tires for the past two weeks.

(by the by, espn news saying that dale was 'mildly upset' shows that those particular announcers haven't listened to him in public settings. that's about as open and blunt as he's ever been about anything to do with the sport overall and not just his efforts on the track.)

again, for all those media guys who are said to be paying attention to this site, PLEASE follow this story and do not let it get away from you like the #99 situation did last week.

ands many, many thanks to espn news for providing the press conference live for even a little while ! excellent.

Best example of reality TV in a long time. Even Jr and Tony whispering to each other while the questions were asked was intriguing for some reason.

Also, some of the reporters ask the most longwinded questions in the world, almost unintelligible the way a few of them ramble. Those guys on the podium are very polite not to look at them like they're crazy!

Yep, too convenient that Kyle's answer ended at exactly at 6:49 when they go to break.

I also believe they intended to carry Kyle live -they carried the "pressers" live for Daytona for Penske and newman, but I didn't see Cali or LV post race. IMO the circumstance of what Stewart and Earnhardt said made someone -ESPN, NASCAR, both - make a call not carry Kyle live. JD is there any way you can find out if I'm completely off base with that theory?

We'll see next week. If they don't carry Bristol comments live after already advertising "live Sprint Cup" coverage after the race, and they fit too neatly within commerical breaks, then something's up.

Or maybe they'll carry live pressers not involving Stewart.

He said NO WAY this won't be on tape delay in the future after that display.
I bet it WON'T be tape-delayed.

I think NASCAR stepped in quicker than any of us thought on the post race media center comments.

Unless ESPN can tell us otherwise, NASCAR stepped in and didn't allow Gibbs / Kyle Busch LIVE in the media center.... it was all on tape & nothing more was allowed to be said about the Goodyear Tires.

Those Stewart / Earnhardt moments were worth watching. Each looking at each other, shrugging shoulders, snickering ... Tony shot straight from the hip.

AGREE about the meandering, get to your point questions.

This is why press conferences shouldn't be televised live. The reporters are not there to make god live TV for you, so they can ask whatever they want however they wish.

"Ken michigan, that is so funny! my husband said the same thing. He said NO WAY this won't be on tape delay in the future after that display. Sad that seeing unvarnished, non-hostile thoughts won't be acceptable anymore - I'd bet on it being on tape from now on too."

Catching up on DVR, I hope you two are wrong - but I wouldn't bet against you.

What's unfortuate if this does affect the "liveness" of the media comments is Tony S. came across well in his comments. Often on TV he's mean and insulting for no reason. Today, he appeared very matter of fact, he didn't insult anyone by name, he didn't criticize gratuitously I thought. His thought were actually cogent, backed up by Dale Jr, who comes across as the "quiet little brother" who backed Tony up when they are side by side. Usually Dale Jr is "the superstar of NASCAR" so that was an interesting dynamic as well.

I don't mind hearing them ramble as long as I hear the answers which is what I care about. I concur that they should compose the questions better, because a couple of them rambled and then said, "What I'm saying is" and restated the questions.

While the drivers were polite as said above, you could see puzzlement cross their faces a couple of times during the rambles, which usually led to the "What I'm saying is".

Don't mind it, I think we were simply observing it. If you were there, don't take it personally!

to quote Dale Jr. the "meandering get-to-your-point comment" wasn't a hateful comment..just 'stating the obvious'

:-)

Lighten up folks.

Jimmy Spencer saying on VL to get rid of the bump rubber...cars were too spread out...Kenny Wallace agreed. Didn't M Waltrip say this a week ago?

On VL Kenny Wallace has just emphasized there was NO race today...drivers afraid to get side by side.

Need softer tires.

Jeff Gordon said it was no fun as well.Jeff Gordon said NASCAR RACED the MINIMUM SPEED! Even Jeff Gordon was nervous out there. You can bash Tony stewart all you want but there was not much side by side or passing today.

Proof is in the tv show. AND comments from veteran drivers.

Today's race was like watching an NFL Game with a football that had no air in the ball.

Sure, you could pass the ball, but it wasnt any fun. Some guys might get lucky and catch it, but most of the guys will drop it.

It was still a "game" (race) but it was terrible to watch.

FOX did ALL they could to make this watchable - but I bet the guys and gals in the truck were saying the same thing.

if they had a hall of fame for arm chair quarterbacks stricklinfan82 your a first ballot entry!
I have a suggestion stop watching the races and get in the TV business...you seem to have all the right answers!!!

I did watch the Fox broadcast yesterday, but didn't listen to 99% of what the talking heads on Fox had to say. It's only 4 races in and I've had enough of DW, so we listened to PRN or the driver scanners on Trackpass all day yesterday.

But from what I saw of the Fox broadcast, it was a lot of showing single cars running alone on the track lap after lap. Either Busch or Earnhardt, Johnson or others. Yet, PRN would be covering some racing elsewhere in the top 10 or pack. Imagine that?

It's getting to the point, I can't even stand to watch that stupid 4-way joke of pitstop coverage. They'd sometime show a full-screen of a car, like Edwards once when he was leading. Then they'd switch to the 4-way and it didn't include Edwards, so you had even less of an idea of where he was in relationship to the other cars.

When Elliott Sadler had his first spin (while Fox was at commercial), they never even showed a replay of what happened. Yet, they had time to do about 10 useless "recaps" of virtually nothing that happened the rest of the day. I guess Elliott wanted to get Best Buy some TV time, so he provided his own instant replay (by spinning again) not too late afterwards and Fox actually caught that.

During the first 8-10 lap segment of the race, Fox showed that stupid Gopher Cam THREE times! That's just absurd!

Then we have the hawking of their new obnoxious theme song as a "ring tone." Do these people have any shame at all???

Then we have the endless use of the in-car cams which totally suck the joy out of watching passes for the lead or position for most fans. Or them covering a single car and then getting back to a pass for 2nd just as it is occuring. No set-up on how the 3rd place guy caught the 2nd place one. This is what is typical for the networks these days unfortunately. No continuity to the race, just "features" on single cars running alone and then "oh yeah, here's a pass being completed.

It's getting to the point, PRN without the few useful things provided by TV is looking better and better to me.
