Sprint Cup Series From Fontana, CA on ESPN (7 PM)

Last week in Bristol the NASCAR on ESPN gang had a very bad Nationwide Series telecast and rallied to have a great Sprint Cup show. This week in Fontana, the Nationwide race and paint drying were running head-to-head until the last fifteen laps. Hopefully, with so many storylines in-progress for the Cup teams the network will once again get itself organized for a good race telecast.

This week Allen Bestwick gets his full hour for NASCAR Countdown. Story selection should be interesting as this is the time of the year when "the race" vs. "The Chase" becomes a tough struggle for the TV crews. Here at Fontana and next week in Richmond making The Chase is going to be said countless times by countless reporters.

Bestwick will have both Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty alongside in the Infield Pit Center. There is absolutely no doubt that Rusty Wallace misses the ability to step-up and do some ESPN races as an analyst. Earlier this year, Rusty did both selected Sprint Cup and Nationwide races while Dale Jarrett was on vacation.

Now that the final seventeen race stretch has come to ESPN/ABC, Wallace is stuck in the infield trying patiently do deal with the cheerleading of Daugherty. One gets the feeling that Rusty has finally begun to understand what he gave up when ESPN made the change in the off-season.

Tim Brewer had a tough Saturday in the Tech Center and it seems that he is often put on the air before he has the time to sort-out the real issue that he should be addressing. Andy Petree seems to be continually disagreeing with Brewer, even after Brewer has held-up and pointed to all kinds of car parts. This should be something to keep an eye on during the Sunday telecast.

The key component once again for this entire three hour telecast is going to be the ability of Dr. Jerry Punch to keep the excitement level high. Punch failed miserably in the Nationwide race and both Jarrett and Petree jumped-in time-and-time again to describe the action while Punch was silent.

Only two races until The Chase begins on ESPN and this is the critical time to keep the excitement high and build the momentum for the sport as it heads-into the final ten races of the season. This responsibility falls squarely to Punch.

ESPN will use the regular pit reporting crew of Shannon Spake, Jamie Little, Mike Massaro and Dave Burns. Last week this crew worked hard and had both good and bad moments. Saturday night in the Nationwide Series race, this crew of four tried several times to get through a full-field recap but once again never completed the rundown. It is going to be very important to rundown the full field several times during the Sprint Cup race.

This post will serve to host your comments about the ESPN coverage of the Sprint Cup Series from Fontana, CA. I was thinking the same thing when the other announcers were saying we haven't seen a car this dominant since Jimmie at the Brickyard.... Has everyone forgotten last week already? Great job by AB to jump in there and say what I'm sure all of us were thinking at the time. He could be relaxing in that studio with his feet on the desk waiting to be told to read a race recap and set the ball on a tee for Rusty and Brad but he's not. He's actually paying attention and doing everything he can to contribute to the broadcast.

AB did exactly what the network should have been doing for a while now - reminding the viewers that Kyle was this dominant last week and didn't win, so don't change the channel because the race is far from over.

hey, i just noticed the foxtrax has the reut car as the 00 instead of the 48 under his photo in the top 5 line-up. should be an easy mistake to correct, fox guys. I've got a brilliant idea on the restarts. Since they like all of the spotters talking at once why not have every camera on one car and do a mosaic on the screen?

Anonymous said...

This race might not be exciting, but ESPN going to commercial somewhat quickly after a restart is not the best idea. There's some pretty good racing and they missed it for 3 minutes, then will come back as the cars start to spread out.

Am I mistaken or wasn't that music they played going to the last break the theme song for NASCAR on NBC/TNT (the networks that covered this part of the season before ESPN came back). How painful to have an obvious on-air reminder of what we once had for TV coverage on this race weekend before the four-letter network came back.

That is the weirdest thing about his broadcast..if he just stayed quiet, we could guess he might have health/fatigue issues.

Via MRN and even Yahoo's Raceflash with commentary from four analysts, I know everything about when the cars need to make their final green flag pit stops and every other race strategy.

No offense to Petree and Jarrett, but it definitely seems like these are just three guys on the outside looking in watching the race. Yes, that does have something to do with the PxP guy, but Punch combined with those two just don't provide the excitement to call a race.

They just don't provide much of anything in terms of coverage of the race. Lack of strategy, no mentions of anyone other than 14 drivers 95% of the time, and a lack of being able to tell us what's going on at the racetrack.

That is one reason Punch is off key. The storyline of Busch vs. Edwards is not working.

He simply cannot call the PXP action and tonight is the best example.

When Bestwick yelled at him from the infield asking "who won last week?" he was really sticking it to Punch.

Basically, he was saying get up on the wheel and make it exciting. You never know who will win.

Dot said...

JD,

Any word from the CA race attendees?

Anonymous said...

stricklinfan: i've been thinking about your point since earlier in the week and i find that what you're pointing out may be THE single irritation for me with espn. i understand our sport and i really do NOT need the basics explained to me every week. if -- and i emphasize the "if" -- there is a casual fan, i will guarantee he or she is watching a race with a fan who knows a bit about nascar. one does NOT stumble upon a race broadcast and stayed tuned out of curiosity. so, there is inevitably someone around to explain all the basics.

your comparison to other sports is also well-reasoned. even hockey, a tough sport for most americans to understand, assumes a level of knowledge. it's a shame that espn thinks we're nitwits when, in fact, i feel we've demonstrated our depth of understanding.

good point, stricklinfan, good point!

Just did a quick google since this race is so exciting and informative. I stand corrected. PJ was in Hooterville as you probably figured.

Petticoat Junction is an American situation comedy produced by Filmways, which originally aired on the CBS network from 1963 to 1970. The rights to the show are held by CBS Paramount Domestic Television. The setting for the series was the Shady Rest Hotel in the farming town of Hooterville.

I feel a great deal of empathy for the man. Somehow I don't believe he ever wanted that job, but that it was thrust upon him. I think he was a much happier man in the pits and on the sideline of NCAA football games reporting in his fields of expertise. The executives at ESPN have certainly removed him from his comfort zone and it is evident each and every week.

What a freakin' boring race. Hey Nascar, when will you wake up? Your precious COT doesn't allow wheel to wheel racing. Cookie-cutter tracks like California can't bring exciting racing (unless all your lights fall off). Nascar is going to have less fans than the IRL, within a few years, if this continues. And what really galls me is the rah-rah artists on Sirius Nascar will come on the air tomorrow and say "What a great race we saw at Fontana". Bull

I did not watch the race, but did see the last 10 laps at work. Even skipped pre race. Just too much. Did review the first 20 minutes before green flag, then took nap before work.
