Friday Night Under The Lights on ESPN2

The rain is gone and the racing is about to begin. Friday night brings the NASCAR on ESPN team to the Lowe's Motor Speedway for the Nationwide Series race.

Allen Bestwick and the NASCAR Countdown crew will start the night at 7:30PM. Bestwick will have his regular crew of Brad Daugherty and Rusty Wallace alongside for this thirty minute pre-race show.

At 8PM it will be Dr. Jerry Punch, Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree who will call the Nationwide Series action. Tim Brewer will be along in the Tech Center and Bestwick and company will remain in the Infield Pit Center. Down on pit road will be Jamie Little, Shannon Spake, Dave Burns and Mike Massaro.

There are lots of stories in the Nationwide Series event and several of them cross-over into the Cup Series. Both Kevin Harvick and Carl Edwards will be in the field on Friday night. There will also be the normal storyline of the Nationwide "regulars" led by Brad Keselowski going up against the Cup drivers racing in the event.

This is a fast and tough track for TV. The only pause is on the backstretch and it only lasts a couple of seconds. Talladega, this is not.

This post will serve to host your comments on the Nationwide Series race on ESPN2. To add your TV-related comments, just click on the COMMENTS button below. The rules for posting are located on the right side of the main page. Thanks for taking the time to stop-by.

Raise your hand IF....

you saw that coming from the 66 car.

Anonymous said...

you would think they would sink the video/audio up, it is a replay not live...sort of confusing when you hear the spotter say go low and there is a car spinning there..then you finally realize the audio is 2 or 3 seconds behind...

Anonymous said...

Do we really care WHO is on the pit box for the 18?? Esp after he caused one of the cautions earlier because he doesn't know the difference between the right and middle pedals ...

The Loose Wheel said...

Ken...I saw it coming when they came off turn 2...Wondered if Steve would back off since Ragan had the position and used Jeff as a pick. I turned away from the tv...turned back and saw the 31 go airborne...thats when I knew steven hit him.

JD

There was several moments of delay earlier...didn't help That word

:)

I am enjoying the camera work, though. JP's voice has sounded raspy on a couple words tonight. I hope he is doing ok. such a nice man. . .

Annon:"Do we really care WHO is on the pit box for the 18?? Esp after he caused one of the cautions earlier because he doesn't know the difference between the right and middle pedals ..."

Ummm did you see the replay? He NEVER hit the brakes or slowed down...

The 1 and 32 tried to get a jump and were all over their pedals...THEY caused that wreck. not the 18

Anon @ 11:26pm - The sync problem happened earlier when they heard someone saying they had a flat ... but, the booth (all 3 of them) didn't know "who" it was ... And then we see a car on pit road and they're still thinking it's someone on the track ... Then they finally show McMurray on pit road ...

The Loose Wheel said...

I'm pleased with the coverage of who is on pit road getting what repairs though. It's been a fairly solid show thus far. Shocked we didn't hear from Rusty after that

Nice replay package on the 31 / 66 wreck

Anonymous said...

The 31 got aero loose when the 6 came up on the high side ... before the 66 got into him ...

Daly Planet Editor said...

Sophia,

That is the difference that I was talking about.

The delay is for the live scanner audio from the teams like the networks tried to use once before.

What I was talking about was the same thing that happened to Kyle Petty last year in Sonoma.

The TV crew cued-up a video replay without taking the time to listen to the audio on the recording. They thought they would get "nat sound" of the crash and instead they got the F bomb.

They actually played that back.

@ 3Bud, I hope I didn't offend you. That wasn't my intent. I just get excited when the demographic isn't always 18-34 yrs old. Love, the old hag.

the camera work has been solid.

Justin INDEED gave a mature interview for a new guy. Hope he does well in the ARCA this weekend.

Anonymous said...

why would he say top 5? why not just tell us he is in 4th place..seems like that tells us more and requires no more time to say it.

The Loose Wheel said...

The 66 has been in this series for 2 years, he was caught up in racing the 6 car rather than being a mature driver and easing off and giving the position, PASSING the 31, then going back after the 6. Steven even said as much. He wanted to race the 6 and expected the 31 to get out of the way.

Do you think Jeff Burton would have run Green over had he been where the 66 was?

Green ran his line, Ragan ran his line...Steven should know by now these cars are prone to getting aero loose yet he pushed his luck...

Anonymous said...

Unbelievable that 66 was involved (created) the turn 4 situation and Rusty's replay focus was on Carl Edwards.

Lets get comments from the OWNER of the 64 and 66. Both cars are junk due to BOTH of RWI drivers driving over their head.

Thats gutless !!

Sophia said...

bummer TRACKSIDE is on against the car race? BOo hiss...wil that be repeated?

Hate missing Steve and the boys if it's a good show. Regan Smith is on now.

The Loose Wheel said...

Stremme flat got wrecked Ken. Steve drove over his head. I dont know what Stremme could have done to prevent getting wrecked.

Anonymous said...

My computor just had a moment, alittle late but I sure would like to see steve Wallace catch alittle luck.

That Algaier kid is impressive on AND off the track.

Handled it all very well.

This is exactly the time when I would like to hear from Rusty if he was not in the ESPN booth.

How frustrated does that poor guy have to be?

Dot said...

Okay, I'm opening the can of worms. Have we seen any bumper cams tonight?

@ Sophia, I don't think Trackside is being repeated. I set the DVR so I can FF Jessica later.

Stremme knew darn well he was pinching Mike Wallace to the bottom of the track.

I saw that one coming too before it happened.

Stremme knew exactly what he was doing. Stremme caused Mike Wallace to get loose, we've all see it countless times.

Just gotta disagree with ya Dave.

The Loose Wheel said...

Thats fine Ken. It'll happen.

I didn't see anything wrong what what Stremme did...Mike Wallace saying he never hit the 64 was eye raising though.

JD -

Is Rusty "off limits" when it comes to these situations ??

Is it a contractual thing that he has written into it or is it more of a "courtesy" NOT to approach these issues with Rusty on the air ??

Sophia said...

thanks I just reminded myself on the timer 11am tomorrow for Trackside. :) Just found it in my digital guide when I saw your posts, K.

Dot gets a thump on the head for mentioning those types of cams.

The JP and ESPN curse.
If I was a driver I would beg them not to tell everyone how good I'm doing.
Thanks to DJ and AP, you're doing a great job. AB, RW, and BD have done well also.
I can only say that the pit reporters have been on the spot talking to drivers. Can't say much for the conversations, I change to the PRN broadcast when they do an interview, to many "******" (fill in the blank) questions.
Thanks for the Justin Allgaier interviews.
I finally have figured out what I don't like about the ESPN broadcasts. To many talking heads with only a few that have a clue what their talking about. When someone is on TV, talking about NASCAR, and I know their blowing smoke, they ain't to smart. When DJ, AP, TB, AB, RW speak I listen, it might be informative or it might be hype, but I listen. They have credibility in the profession. I would include JP, but he is better for facts on what has happened, not for what's happening.
I'm so discusted with the "program" or "script". Most all the complaints have been said over and over, so I won't repeat.
There has been so good camera work tonight, but when the commentary doesn't work with on screen, it's just boring.
I have had my fill of pit reporters, "I talked to", "This morning I asked".
Thanks DJ and AP. I'm sure you're doing the best you can with what you've got to work with.
Well there the "pit reporters" go again, I think i'm gonna be sick.

Happy Racin all

Satellite does NOT work well in this neighborhood...well not if you watch TV longer than 2 hours. HUGE trees around this house.

That camera list is getting long. First I need a new laptop since thie DELL deal is 19 months old and sitting on a freezer pack (rotate packs) due to bad Motherboard. :(

But thanks for thinking of me...I could go in LR but too tired...so will watch TS repeat.

Poor RS having to relive last week in detail again...poor guy.

How convenient. Do they consider sparks debris? I didn't see anything fly off.

Anonymous said...

David - They actually showed Jeff Burton bumping someone multiple times out of the way ... earlier in the race ...

The Loose Wheel said...

Joey wont be in the 18 for the simple fact that the car isnt locked in. Should something happen like did with Denny at Darlington and they fail to qualify then it would be egg on their face. I have to imagine they are looking towards next season and getting Joey ready for Cup rather than pulling out all stops for a meaningless owners championship...

stricklinfan82 said...

Repost due to typos....

Wow, nice to see an owner's points graphic. I've gotta wonder if J.D. Gibbs might be planning on moving Logano to the #18 and putting Kyle or Denny back in the #20 for the remaining companion races.

There's still 40 laps to go but so far this is an unbelievable turnaround from what we saw a week ago. I don't know what changed in the production truck - one or more people in it or just a change of philosophies - but if this keeps up all the way to the end I say don't change a thing in that truck from this day forward. Bottle this up and duplicate this every week, in both Cup and Nationwide. We've actually seen nothing but on-track racing... I'm shocked!

Sophia said...

JD, who is directing the camera tonight? Mike Wells School of Directing graduate? :)

ams

Good camera work can help this wench's mood a lot.

David said

"Mike Wallace saying he never hit the 64 was eye raising though."

I am glad SOMEBODY else heard that...Why would he lie like that? The replay showed he bumped him. He seems to wreck people a lot OR to be in the wrong place a lot when there are wrecks...I like MW but that's just what I am remembering...if I am totally wrong, I know some savvy poster will correct me.

Where the heck is Kenny Wallace?

The Loose Wheel said...

Annon: lapped car or a lead lap car?

I dont imagine you would take that chance with someone whom you know is already loose to run the risk of making them even looser as you could lose your own car as a result. If its someone who looks to have good balance on their car and are just slow then yeah...you may be able to get away with bumping them to send a message.

Anonymous said...

Sophia - They do have out a new invention ... for laptops ...

It's a special cool pad that keeps the underside cool ...

My friend has one & loves it ...

You don't have to use "Blue Ice" ... LOL

The Loose Wheel said...

sophia i am not 100% if that was MW or not but I heard someone say they didnt touch him...

Im imaging it had to either be MW or MW's spotter just trying to reassure MW and get him through the race...

But as was stated after the restart pile-up...karma came full circle.

Sophia said...

Ditto your last post STF.

If ONLY they could've done this all season on all races.

There would not be comment pages of 600 or last week I think this place went well over 700.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Come on Jerry, get up on the wheel and make it exciting!!

The Loose Wheel said...

JD...curious:

Any explanation asto why we haven't had any commercials in about the last 2 hours?

Anonymous said...

I guess this is a lesson on why you DON'T run your commercial inventory during a RED FLAG.

But the more i think about it, I bet that those particular sponsors paid for PRIME TIME commercial spots.

Therefore, ESPN was pretty much forced to run those spots during the PRIME TIME block.

But I am surprised they arent filling breaks with a boat load of ESPN / ABC Promos.

The Loose Wheel said...

Irony:

My motherboard is not communicating so my fan never works. THUS the freezer packs. :)

My latest computer guy is a DOLL and has looked at my laptop twice for an hour each time and never charged a penny. He knows he can't fix it and when he thought he helped things initially, he was afraid it would only be temporary.

He has NEVER seen some of the bizarre behavior of this thing. He said if I can keep this thing COLD (sometimes it will NOT turn on if it gets too hot) I might eek it out a few more months.

It's warm NOW with the freezer packs....it's an unusual problem..being a dell VERY EXPENSIVE to fix and motherboards aren't worth it for laptops. I know about the cool things for laptops but we are talking

SERIOUS HEAT!!!

P.S. He also has a voice that sounds very similar to Chad Knaus!!! On the phone, I keep picturing Chad's face, lol.

How is this happening JD?

The Loose Wheel said...

sophia...i was thinking the SAME thing lol.

stricklinfan82 said...

David,

I strongly disagree with your complete dismissal of the owner's championship. It's a far bigger deal, in my opinion, then you're making it out to be and I think quite the opposite... the small risk of Logano wrecking in qualifying and missing a race is minimal compared to risk of losing a title by keeping the rookie in that car. We'll see what happen though.

Daly Planet Editor said...

No clue on that part yet. ESPN owes the cable systems a 60 second break every thirty minutes, so that makes it all the more puzzling.

Sophia said...

Wow...Blaney has bad luck, too.....taking out team mate

Anonymous said...

ok guys and gals....

how about some excitement from the booth.

lets hear it !!

The Loose Wheel said...

SF82:

I only agree to an extent. JGR is focused on developing Joey Logano. That IS their primary focus especially since he will be in the Cup Series next year. If he misses a race (all the rest of the schedule except Memphis are companion races) then they are limiting his laps and limiting his potential seat time.

Joey is only a few points out of first and the next race is a standalone...Bowyer could have a mediocre day and run 5-10th and Joey could run top 5 or win. He ran well in the last standalone race so it stands to reason he will again in the final one of the year.

Owners Championship is a shortsighted goal and if it was such a big deal I imagine they wouldn't have put Joey in the car the rest of the season and have announced it in stone.

Good job by ESPN clearly showing that Kyle Busch did not brake-check anyone and good job by DJ explaining the rules regarding restarting a race as the leader. I strongly dislike Kyle, but he did nothing wrong. I don't blame the 29's spotter for trying though, LOL.

Great ending with the finish line camera work... though I would still prefer a vertical drop-down of the finishing results.

That may have been the best ESPN broadcast I have seen since their return to the sport last year. Very solid effort all night:

- No pre-taped junk under green. Not once was the screen covered up with junk. No highlights from previous races, no pre-taped comments and gigantic head-shots of the drivers, no full-screen point standings as of now graphics, etc.

- The director looked for racing on the track all night and didn't follow a script.

- They were all over the Kyle Busch brake-checking allegations. Rival spotters and NASCAR officials accused Kyle of brake-checking and ESPN immediately showed proof that he didn't and had DJ clearly explain the rules regarding restarting as the leader.

- DJ did a great job looking out the window and catching incidents that began off-camera.

- Almost no commercials after the rain! Yes it was a fluke and presumably only happened because of the delay but you can't beat 2 minutes of commercials in the last 2 hours of the broadcast!

Very good job ESPN. PLEASE do the same exact thing in the Cup race and for the rest of the year in both series. Please please please please! No pre-taped junk, no hype, no storylines. Just televise the racing on the track, JUST LIKE YOU DID TODAY.

IF the guys in the booth had paid attention to the actual speed graphics on the two restarts where the big wrecks happened ...

They would have seen the DIP in the speeds ...

Sorry Booth Boys - But THAT is proof that he was pedaling the throttle ...

The 18 should've been black flagged ...

They did it to Hornaday a few years back ... because the 2nd place truck was not paying attention ...

hey sophia! had more than a few beers tonight at the rehearsal dinner: oh, to be 23 again and facing marriage! but i appreciate you taking care of it on my behalf! somehow, for me, racing = beer. otherwise, i'm all about the red wine -- no surprise.

karen: caught the 8th inning for my boys -- GO PHILLIES! -- but i am (unfortunately) in warren, nj, for a wedding tomorrow. to clarify: the location is unfortunate for me, NOT the wedding!

so, jd, what's the story on the long uninterrupted coverage? was that a consequence of the red flag period?

Dot,

GM has shocked the NASCAR owners by talking publicly today about Chapter 11 being a possibility.

They can merge with whomever they choose, but no one is going to buy full-size cars and trucks except business operations and commercial fleets.

I have an email into my ESPN rep to ask about the extended commercial free issue. Will post the answer tomorrow on the main page.

Thanks again to everyone for stopping by.
