Sprint Cup Series At Talladega on ABC Sports

SPEED has handled the pre-race action of practice and qualifying this weekend. Sunday afternoon at 1PM will be the first time viewers will be seeing the ESPN on ABC crew.

Allen Bestwick will start the ball rolling with Brad Daugherty and Rusty Wallace from the Infield Pit Studio. The NASCAR Countdown pre-race show should be interesting with Daugherty having just completed a deal to become a satellite team of Michael Waltrip next season in the Cup Series.

Other than The Chasers, there are some names at the back of the field like Terry Labonte and Kenny Wallace that may be a factor before the race is over. Not necessarily in winning, but in helping someone to achieve that goal.

Last season, ESPN was fascinated by "the big one" and said it over-and-over again during the pre-race show. Lost in the shuffle was the actual story of the race field and what viewers could expect other than accidents.

Dr. Jerry Punch will take over at 2PM and begin the race coverage. He will be joined as usual by Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree. Tim Brewer will be in the Tech Center. Down on pit road will be Shannon Spake, Jamie Little, Dave Burns and Mike Massaro.

It is very hard for the announcers to see the backstretch, so they will be basically watching the same pictures as the viewers at home when they are calling the action on that part of the track. The choice of whether they look out at the track or continue to follow the TV monitors in the booth for the other racing should be easy to determine.

The COT has shown both a tendency to allow two cars to run fast when hooked-up just right and to make for boring racing during the early parts of this race. If teams hang back and gather together it will be up to the ESPN crew to choose to inform the viewers or ignore it.

The TV gang has been making great use of the double video box effect that allows the race to continue for the viewers even as Brewer talks tech or a crew chief is interviewed. Look for increased use of the aerial shot and the speed shots, especially after a restart.

This post will serve to host your comments about the ESPN on ABC presentation of the Sprint Cup Series race from Talladega. To add your TV-related comment, just click on the COMMENTS button below and follow the easy instructions. The rules for posting are located on the right side of the main page. ken: yeah, i hear ya'. that's what led to my "shut the eff up" comment earlier. so much talk, so little said.

david: you most certainly called it with the tire issue. colin braun had a blow out in trucks and we all know about earnhardt's tire explosion in practice. guess goodyear doesn't want it to be the story yet again.

aarrghh. we'er at lap 58 of 188 and we just got the useless "where they are now in the chase points" graphic. hey mr director? that is STILL a tremendously useless stat and really does not provide any information at a "normal" track. at dega? even less.

hey, i didn;t even know sterling marlin was still in the race . . .

I guess the 21 who hit the wall behind JG doesn't get a mention, he is also off I think

It sure would be nice if ESPN on ABC would actually show the lap and lineup on the restart on EACH restart... Not just random restarts.

Did anyone say that Jon Wood had issues hitting the wall with Jeff Gordon's deal. Oh yeah, he's not a chaser.

I can still hear moody...sounds like he is watching an exciting race somewhere...

Daly Planet Editor said...

Please Doc, just raise your voice and make it exciting for just one lap!

stricklinfan82 said...

Yet another missed lead change.... 43 around the 83..... while focusing on a telling a story about a Chaser in the middle of the pack. Thanks ESPN.

In some parts of the track you can hear the ambient sound of the track announcer...he is definitely watching a different race than the ESPN guys.

And as I hit "send" they talk to Ryan

Anonymous said...

I have watched the last 60 laps without the computer or any other input and I give up, I have no idea what the hell is going on and I am so dissapointed, this is my favorite race of the year.

I really hope that there is some pxp help from the infield, because DJ and Andy are not getting it done today.

Ryan Newman interview. At least he wasn't asked about his feelings.

Vicky D said...

ri88girl - no DJ & AP seem a little quiet today. Maybe they were told to shut up and let JP do the PXP.

2 seconds w/Ryan better than nothing, I guess.

Amazingly enough, after the long in-car camera shot of the 29 was finished there was a new leader. Yet another missed lead change.

The 2 failures (Friday and Saturday) weren't what gave me this fear. The ARCA race had 9 failures all of which were random and THAT made me think this would carry over. Goodyear has a FAR better compound than Hoosier does however its still not quite good enough for this track.

Haus the MRN guys aren't watching the race on the TV - so they are calling what they are seeing. Much better than tv "coverage"

J.D.,

The HotPass director the Dale Junior is selecting shots that ABC/ESPN is not using. Rick Allen mentioned a big chunk of tire debris on the hood of the 48 car during the caution and then CUT TO: the chunk of tire on the track, as Rick Allen said it just fell off.

I wish I could had a choice of a Hot Pass channel with MRN but that will never happen.

No MRN in this market today because of MLB Post-Season. (San Francisco Bay Area)

Speaking of parades (just catching up) next weekend we'll have competing parades. In San Francisco, Columbus Day and the People's Republic of Berkeley will have Indiginous Peoples' Day. But I don't expect the ABC affiliate will bump NASCAR coverage for it.

hey david? is it your thinking it might be the TRACK as well as the tires? especially given the hoosier results at arca?

Yanno I've been thinking about this for 2 days straight and my BEST guess is that it is a track problem. Its strange to see 2 compounds fail like this so randomly. There is no tell like there has been at other tracks...quite honestly the tires just fail.

I do remember back to truck qualifying, Hornday said he had a tire out of balance...maybe that was a sign though I don't know if they ever changed it or corrected it.

This is a HUGE story and someone needs to get on the ball and talk to a Goodyear rep. SPEED BLEW it at the ARCA race to do that...

stricklinfan82 said...

The Big One happens while ESPN is on the air, but we miss it for full-screen billboards. JD, is it reasonable to assume that the production truck could have planned ahead and gotten those out of the way earlier during a caution flag, and thus spared us missing the wreck... or does it not work that way?

Interesting that Punch thought they were still in commercial and his first out-loud thought was "See if Carl Edwards was involved."

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know which cars were involved? You would think they would tell.

Anonymous said...

@alex--you're right! what were we thinking? They only show the commercial a million times...and can recite it word for word...how dare we think they actually break away! *giggle*

david @ 3:40 -- what makes it more interesting to me is that it's two different tire compounds on two different styles of car. and arca was a hot mess by the end.

i don't recall as many tires blowing out as have this year. and CUT tires at 'dega are understandable but that's not what we're seeing this weekend by any means.

(and brad? the #83 tire did not "go down": it exploded. there is a significant difference, my man, a SIGNIFICANT difference.)

Bruce E Simmons said...

Those involved in the wrecking yard creation fest:

Vickers, Gilliland, Truex Jr., Kahne, Skinner, McMurray, Labonte, Raines & Almirola.

Jeeze ESPN, tell us who was all involved rather than making us go look it up somewhere else.

alex said...

Another minor thing that annoys me about ESPN... If they're going to play music going to commercial, at least time it right. They play Crazy Train by Black Sabbath, yet only play about 3 and a half words of one of the verses. Maybe it's a problem of the transition to commercial, but it sounds out of place to hear 3 seconds from part of a song then cut right out of it.

Bruce E Simmons said...

Gee Truex, what did you see, how did it feel?

It seems to me like the entire broadcast got out of the blocks wrong and never regained their footing. The commentary, camera work, and overall coverage of this race is absolutely horrible. No story has been developed. There has been almost no calling of the action. There has been incessant calling of numbers (especially when the cars are shown in a pack, so it seems random at best).

This telecast is as much of a debacle in broadcasting terms as the Indy race was in tire terms. Goodyear isn't having a good day at Talladega, but ESPN/ABC is probably having the worst day I have ever seen. This is pathetic.

sad part is . . . i don't think he got it as he said it.

now, they're blaming the splitters, saying the splitters are cutting the tires and then they explode. not sure i can buy that one b/c the tires aren't going down, they are exploding. as vickers said: "a bomb went off under my right front fender." in my experience, that's NOT a tire that's gone down b/c of being cut by a splitter.

tires are becoming the story. once again.

absolutely! when a tire separates like that, it is NOT because it was cut by a splitter. the tires are exploding outward, not going down b/c of a "slit" cut in the sidewall by a splitter. i find it hard to believe that all these teams are dinking with pressures and camber in the same way to cause the same result.

ALERT
ALERT

I don't know if any other California fans are watching on KGO-TV, but on the AT&T Uverse channel - the screen is SPLIT. This is only on the HD channel.

There is a line down the center of the screen and the left half of the picture is on the right and the left is on the right. This is no joke. I cannot believe this. It is ruining the race. This is only HD channel performing like this. I have to watch on the standard non-HD channel, which is horrible reception on a HD tv. UGH.

FULL SCREEN REPLAYS AND tony Jr???

Dear GOD..they lost the split screen capabilities....

david ragan to the lead during commercial per MRN

Haus14 said...

unbelievable --- all of that nonsense about jr. and his "push" and he isn't even in the lead...show us that stuff when it matters...after the checkers has fallen and it is the winning move.

On a bad scale of one to ten, with one being OK and ten being absolutely unwatchable, where do you guys rate this race so far?

Anonymous said...

see that draft between the 88 and the 08? THAT'S what i'm a earnhrdt jr fan! took it right up there in the crap and kept his foot on the pedal! awesome job and GREAT puch by the 08 car!

(and credit where it's due: that was a great line -- "junior was headed to birmingham!")

Daly Planet Editor said...

pockettens,

Give them a call or email them.

Haus14 said...

pockettens...mine is fine today, but this happened last year during one of the races as well...I have directv so I am not sure whose fault it is.

Unknown said...

Ha as soon as I posed they fixed it -- but that was about 30 laps RUINED by KGO in San Francisco. DAMN.

Sophia said...

pocket fan

Call your local tv station if somebody might answer the phone.

I do NOT have HD but once a soap opera came back from commercial with a black line on the bottom 1/4 of the screen and heads cut off..took them awhile to fix it but it was an HD versus regular station hiccup.

be glad you have alternative station if that's any consolation. Sometimes guys at tv stations are asleep at the switch or short staffed.

JD today is a solid 9.5
I'm watching the Boys on another channel & switching to race. I'm getting better race info on MRN - just got another thru the field.
Which is something this director can not do.

Newracefan said...

JD 3

Jessica said...

JD, the race from what I can tell is pretty cool, the coverage is crap. lets put it this way, every time I am annoyed with espn I take a drink...typing this comment was hard. So that would be a 8.

Anonymous said...

jd, on scale of 1-10, 1 at the top and 10 at the bottom? a typically poor job being done = 8 from me.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Thanks for the rundown, lets see how far they get.

Unknown said...

I did call (believe me - I called them long before I posted here. This has been about 30-35 laps!). 35 laps down the tubes - or at least watching on non-hd tv with frequent checking back. AWFUL.

alex said...

predictions for the rest of the race:
-3 more blown tires
-at least one wreck missed by ESPN doing something else full-screen
-break track record of lead changes
-a Wallace finishes Top-5
-27 more bumper cams.

Blown tire Denny Hamlin.

4 tires

Anonymous said...

JD--it's a 9...pushing hard to be a 10

And there's Denny's tire

Newracefan said...

tire for the 11?

Dot,

On the Hot Pass audio channel (we have three choices, network audio, team audio, and Hot Pass audio which has the team audio and PxP and analysis by Rick Allen and Phil Parsons), T. J. Majors -- JR's spotter -- said, "The 42 is coming to help on the outside."

My question: Does this mean the 42's spotter talked to T.J. and said he was going to help?" Rick and Phil said it's usually a judgment call rather than communicating the 42 team. T.J. sees the 42 with a run on the same line as the 88 and is warning him the 42 will be coming up behind him.

Thanks for asking.

(and sorry: it was the 8 and the 88, not the mythical "08" pushing the 88 wayyy up top! i was typing that while watching football for a moment)

"we definitely have some kind of issue here with these tires." "yes, we do."

Ya' think so?!?!?

Sophia said...

JD

I rate it a 9 due to MISSING things live due to full screen coverage of replays and EXCESS bumper cams/in car cams/roof cams. and other baloney.

If Mike Wells directing, this would be EXCELLENT...even sans booth info...great pictures means EVERYTHING to me..I will choose that over today's trainwreck.

ouch..hope Denny H is ok..hard lick in the wall.

Jessica said...

tony junior says...we done bought every tire nascar let us. Junior- it don't matter we're just waiting on who gets the next dud....

Kenn Fong said...

J.D.

Tony Jr. said the 88 team only has two sets of tires remaining. He's now using his penultimate set.

WOW they are getting out a stretcher??? OMG

Bruce E Simmons said...

pockettens and any other comcast customers: Comcast packs way too many channels into it's HD product so the apparent quality is not very good. I did an editorial on them some months back.

And another tire bites the dust!

That's 2 debris and 4 tire cautions!
Jeeze.

If this race gets down to 10 cars, ESPN MIGHT be able to cover it OK.

MIGHT I say.

Newracefan said...

JD I'm backwards I ment a 7 and I'm not even drinking, guess it was the paint fumes from this morning.

JJ worried about tires

Jessica said...

junior and tony "is he all right???"

alex said...

Hopefully Denny is ok, this tire situation is almost as bad as the Brickyard.

rich said...

JD, is 10 good or bad?
David, you hit it on tires. I cant believe that this is the same tire code that they ran in the spring

Dot said...

Leading the race can be detrimental to finishing today.

Does infinity count as a number? If so I'll use that.

I can't imagine being in that production truck saying "Alright, let's find as many different angles as possible to replay Junior taking the lead. Alright now let's show the crew chief's recation to it.... What? What do you mean there's a live lead change going on? Is that German you're speaking? What does that mean? Roll commercial!"

Now we miss another crash for a ridiculous "Up To Speed" among Chase drivers. INEXCUSABLE!
