Sprint Cup Series At Talladega on ABC Sports

SPEED has handled the pre-race action of practice and qualifying this weekend. Sunday afternoon at 1PM will be the first time viewers will be seeing the ESPN on ABC crew.

Allen Bestwick will start the ball rolling with Brad Daugherty and Rusty Wallace from the Infield Pit Studio. The NASCAR Countdown pre-race show should be interesting with Daugherty having just completed a deal to become a satellite team of Michael Waltrip next season in the Cup Series.

Other than The Chasers, there are some names at the back of the field like Terry Labonte and Kenny Wallace that may be a factor before the race is over. Not necessarily in winning, but in helping someone to achieve that goal.

Last season, ESPN was fascinated by "the big one" and said it over-and-over again during the pre-race show. Lost in the shuffle was the actual story of the race field and what viewers could expect other than accidents.

Dr. Jerry Punch will take over at 2PM and begin the race coverage. He will be joined as usual by Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree. Tim Brewer will be in the Tech Center. Down on pit road will be Shannon Spake, Jamie Little, Dave Burns and Mike Massaro.

It is very hard for the announcers to see the backstretch, so they will be basically watching the same pictures as the viewers at home when they are calling the action on that part of the track. The choice of whether they look out at the track or continue to follow the TV monitors in the booth for the other racing should be easy to determine.

The COT has shown both a tendency to allow two cars to run fast when hooked-up just right and to make for boring racing during the early parts of this race. If teams hang back and gather together it will be up to the ESPN crew to choose to inform the viewers or ignore it.

The TV gang has been making great use of the double video box effect that allows the race to continue for the viewers even as Brewer talks tech or a crew chief is interviewed. Look for increased use of the aerial shot and the speed shots, especially after a restart.

This post will serve to host your comments about the ESPN on ABC presentation of the Sprint Cup Series race from Talladega. To add your TV-related comment, just click on the COMMENTS button below and follow the easy instructions. The rules for posting are located on the right side of the main page. JD do you mean the race or the coverage ?Ithink the actual race is pretty good , passing lead changes et. The coverage / picture , camera angle on ESPN on the other hand is not .Good sound Though except maybe Doc trys to talk.

I said this tire thing in the pre-race.

The only person that saw this coming. Would have been happy to have been wrong...unfortunately thats not the case.

Denny got the heck knocked out of him. That really sucks, and ESPN missed it initially.

I can't believe how no one has taken this tire thing seriously until 3 tires failed, now they are panicing when the 4th has failed.

If anyone watched the races this weekend this should have been on their radar as something to watch. Its random so there really is no telling who is next.

Phathead said...

kind of a classless way to go to commercial there. There's a driver who may be injured, you would think they would show a bit more respect.

bevo said...

On HotPass a 2
On ABC when I switch the audio and watch the top right hand box a 9

Jessica said...

from trackpass scanner...lots of guys worried about denny. They know a bad hit when they see it.

Vicky D said...

this would be a good time for a field summary of the ENTIRE field.

Dot said...

Why does JP keep saying concrete? Just shows he's a decade behind the times.

rich said...

Wow, didnt look like Denny hit that hard

Anonymous said...

OOPS! My bad. Not paying attention on the rating. I meant the broadcast is really bad but thr race is good!

Anonymous said...

hey look! there's ray evernham. what's up with that?

PammH said...

JD, this is an 9 for sure. But I'm listening on MRN mostly.

Dot said...

BREAKING NEWS!!!!!

There's a tire situation. Good grief.

Phathead said...

Rich - In my eyes he hit a TON. A few years ago that kind of hit would be a rather severe injury.

The Loose Wheel said...

Ray Evernham of ALL people should have seen this coming. As an owner these are things he SHOULD be looking out for and should have seen a pattern over the course of the weekend. It should not have taken 4 in-race failures for him to snap out of it and talk about it

Bruce E Simmons said...

dot: LOL... thanks

rusty: how the bloody hell can the DRIVER minimize the effect of a tire compound problem?!? this is NOT a car/tire relationship issue that the driver can impact: it's what goodyear brought that sucks.

damn it: put the responsibility where it belongs!

Anonymous said...

race coverage is a 9

Anonymous said...

DH hit going about 180 mph, and then theres the angle and all. What concerns me is the other drivers being concerned. They know a bad hit when they see one.

Goodyear refusing to talk yet.

Sophia said...

hmmm too high of tire pressure? oone theory

The Loose Wheel said...

THANK YOU GIL MARTIN!!!!

That is the best explaination thus far. Makes sense too with the separations and such.

Bruce E Simmons said...

I'm having real issues with ESPN on ABC playing cool rock music to the video of the wrecks.

They're glorifying the damn events that are putting people's lives at risk.

Then again, last year, Dougherty was cheering at a Talladega wreck last year as the wreck slid past the announcement booth.

Nan S said...

Looks like Evernham is dying his hair now.

Phathead said...

BruSimm - that's exactly what I said a little bit ago. This is the first time in a long while that I can remember an actual driver injury on the track and they're glorifying it with this 'cool music'

bevo said...

Those are the worst ones, the spectacular ones dissipate a lot of energy. This kind does not.

Yet another reason to ALWAYS have a NASCAR official in the booth to explain the sanctioning bodies thoughts in the midst of a race.

IF AND WHEN someone appears in the booth will be after this problem gets way too serious.

Jessica said...

junior has a bad vibration....

Dot said...

If Gil is correct, won't NASCAR mandate the tire pressures for the rest of the race?

Sophia said...

I have the tv on MUTE.

Did we SEE Denny carried into the ambulance...I did not

I hope he's ok..why is TONY needing to ask three times to get an answer...does this mean they don't want to say how bad he is?

I wonder if he has temporary amnesia..that happened to my late father once after an accident..but 15 minutes later he was ok..thank God

Unknown said...

JD you asked how I rate this race and I rate it as 10 UNWATCHABLE. I am not a troll but I am a casual enough NASCAR fan to not nitpick every broadcast. But this one is horrible.

The cherry was just on the cake -- Denny Hamlin went out on a stretcher after a horrific crash and ABC mixes it to a Journey song for the out-to-commercial bumper. DISGRACEFUL.

Anonymous said...

Brusimm I wasn't going to mention the tastelessness of the music, since you did I agree. Really bad taste since we don't know...

And Brad is such a #$%^ - not a fan. I've heard fans go silent or gasp
at real bad accidents only horses#$%
cheer @ wrecks. or add music...

david said...
THANK YOU GIL MARTIN!!!!

That is the best explaination thus far. Makes sense too with the separations and such.

yeah, but ya' know what, david? after earnhardt jr's explosion in practice and maybe the first 2 tires today, there's not a crew chief out there who wouldn't have already dialed down any pressures that were a touch too high.

sorry, it doesn't play for me. whenever the tires cause such serious problems, we get told it's either crew chiefs messing with tire pressure OR camber or a driver taking it too hard into the corner. maybe, just maybe, it's the junk that goodyear is bringing to the tracks.

and maybe the booth ought to let us know they're trying to get info on hamlin. frankly, i'm not a fan of his but until i know how he's doing, i'm not too focused on the race . . .

Anonymous said...

Jessica,
Yes, goodyear is resopnsible for the tire, but NASCAR controls when to alter race conditions if there is a problem - which there clearly is. All weekend, all series, all tire types.

Jessica said...

"alert and awake" that's the best we have on denny...bummer.

Newracefan said...

Denny to hospital, hope he's OK. At least ESPN gave us that info

rich said...

Denny awake and alert but being taken to hospital per Jr channel

Bruce E Simmons said...

Jessica: "junior has a bad vibration."

It's probably the ESPN roof cam on the car.

bevo said...

Rick Allen says Hamlin going to the hospital

The Loose Wheel said...

True on the tires but if Goodyear recommends a maximum air pressure and the teams knowingly exceed it then who is to blame? Alot of them have gotten away with it and have probably gotten bolder with what they are running. Heat cycles on the tire have shown to bring out the problem as well...

I don't wanna be on old tires late in this one, especially if there are a series of restarts late

stricklinfan82 said...

Okay, so we see Stewart take the lead. The cameras go back to focus on Dale Jr. in the middle of the pack for a sustained period of time. When the camera returns to the front, Paul Menard is leading and Stewart's 5th. No one at ESPN in the truck or the booth even cared to notice or acknowledge the lead change.

What are these people thinking?

Newracefan said...

44 way off the pace, almost to a stop I wonder what the deal is. Oh by the way Schrader back on the lead lap

Sophia said...

Ditto to Red's comment on Denny

No updates???

I agree I take my 9 back JD and rate this a TOTALLY TASTELESS 10 with the 'fun bumper music' as they went to commercial after Denny's impact.

I had griping so much but htis network just stinks.

Hold my breath JP says? how about hold my nose?

jim hunter on MRN talking about Denny..being taken to hospital..he was alert and talking...but that's all we got

Anonymous said...

sophia: "temporary amnesia" sounds like a grade 2 concussion.

"alert and awake" makes me wonder if he was the negative side of either of those when the safety crew reached him. if so, that also sounds like a grade 3 concussion: loss of consciousness and/or going in and out. that level = a mid-week visit to dr petty for a neurological exam before nascar will let a driver back in the seat.

Anonymous said...

Denny's being taken to the hospital for further observation / evaluation

Bruce E Simmons said...

ESPN needs a neurological exam

Newracefan said...

I've heard JP say awake and alert before but for some reason this one makes me nervous

Dot said...

Sophia said...

red:

the accident to my late father was 40 years ago and he ended up not going to the hospital (but we had a doctor in the family) and sense he bounced back so quick and had no headache IIRC, we thought it was combo shock and impact. It was from falling off a horse onto his head. A horse we gave back that we had on loan.

Jim hunter gave little info...we will all feel better when we know more.

stricklinfan82 said...

ESPN focuses on the 3 cars running way behind the pack. By the time they return to the front there's a new leader. I seem to be noticing a trend here.......

Sophia said...

I have heard awake and alert from NASCAR powers that be can mean one step awake from life suppports as they like to downplay injuries....

I hope we hear more on SPEED report or by the end of the race.

Anonymous said...

OK JD its now a 10 UN watchable! Bumper cams the last 3 times I flipped back to see race!

Anonymous said...

I think they really need R&D on this tire cot combo, not a good track for this to me happening.

Anonymous said...

thank you rusty and AB for the tire info

Jessica said...

is it me or has the race been much better this year? no single file parade. the coverage on the other hand....

Anonymous said...

what keeps coming to my mind is that the best coverage of 'dega is when the camera shows the entire pack and we can watch all the cars jockey for position. anything else and the real skill involved in running there is just lost.

the lead changes are constant and i don't really understand why the booth gets excited about how many there are per lap. it's what happens at this track and who's where is (almost) unimportant until the last 5 laps.

The Loose Wheel said...

Seeing Denny scratch his head and hearing he was talking to people in the care center, I imagine NASCAR is being overly cautious here since he did hit a ton.

Had we gone under red and they had to cut him out of the car then I would really start freaking out.

Anyways I am going to try and watch the end of this one. You all know my sentiments on the tire issue.

I wanted to try and find a link to email ESPN before the race to ask if they thought it'd be an issue. Pretty sad when fans are doing a better job forecasting the race then the "experts"

Bruce E Simmons said...

I want to expound on my Dougherty comment: Last year during a Busch race at Talladega, the big one hit and the whole pack slid sideways past the broadcast booth.

There was an inadvertent camera angle as we watched Brad shaking his fist and cheering as if he just won the lottery as the slid past.

I've not been too hot on this guy but trying to give him a chance. But as time goes on, they seem to continually develop his NASCAR ties: "Friends with the Frances," Used to be a team owner, now is one..."

I just got suspicious that they didn't tell us all this up front when he first started covering NASCAR last year, but rather fed this info to us over a period of several months.

I don't wanna bag on Brad. Everyone needs an opportunity, no matter who you are, but more on the processes around his job / task / position.

stricklinfan82 said...

There are two records in serious jeopardy today...

75 lead changes: 1984 Winston 500 at Talladega

worst TV coverage in NASCAR history: 2007 Sonoma Cup race

Dot said...

I find it amazing that Brian France/NASCAR will change the Bud Shoot out for next year in the middle of this season, but will not go with a better wheel for the COTs. I've heard and read that this could make better and safer racing.

no, jd, it could NOT be more obvious.

but so what? we see it clearly but, IF espn sees it, they are not inclined to change it this season. so we're stuck until next year.

bevo said...

Either Jr just hit a giant bug or something REALLY nasty got tossed up on the track :)

I will never know why Bestwick ended up at the gas pumps. He must have either ticked off the wrong person or someone else has their head up someone's (***), kissing it.

Newracefan said...

Why AB is not in the booth is the best kept secret in Nascar.

Anonymous said...

The AP report (Jenna Fryer) posted 8 minutes ago says Denny was alert and awake but favoring his right foot.

The Loose Wheel said...

Im not surprised the goodyear rep said that. They have to be clueless here because I'm thrown for a loop too.

I would understand JP being cautious in reporting injury updates, but he should be the one doing the injury updates as the staff physician.

Anonymous said...

Oh I know...yes other tracks you're "safe" doing that (not that I want/need it at all) but since they're apparently watching a different race than I am, I've seen folks today be in the lead one second and out the next. With tires going and people being caught up in the mess, until the checkered flag waves and everyone has crossed safely, we don't know *who* stands where.

ESPN laughed about it and thought it was funny.

Anonymous said...

geee when did Kenny get a full body transplant and name change?

Anonymous said...

dot, they tried but, in all fairness, it just isn't the sort of racing that allows for that: by the time one gets thru the first 3, they get freight trained by the other lane and they're now running, oh, 15th+.

Anonymous said...

I loved seeing the Michael McDowell video graphic when talking about Kenny Wallace!!! Hey ESPN - McDowell isn't in the race!!

Phathead said...

Well I cant say ive worked for Goodyear or really ever done anything in racing. Spent the last year in Mooresville, NC going to the NASCAR Tech school out there and recently just moved back to AZ since my financial situation is pretty bad and I can live at home for awhile lol. But this tire thing...I've watched racing for over 10 years and I've picked up alot on the way. That, and I am a storage bin of useless information.

School taught me a little about tires, not just race tires but passenger car tires and how the forces they are put through on the track (even when they don't fail) is amazing. High air pressures make sense to a degree but so does the incredlby close tolerances they have in the fenderwell clearances. With a good bump draft into your rear clip and already close wheelwell tolerances it could stand to reason the tire gets a small cut all the way around the tire and as the pressures build the tire peels away from the sidewall and the caps separate...

hopefully this helps with the person that asked where my well of useless information came from lol

Can we get an update from Michael Waltrip's or Joe Nemechek's crew chief? I bet not.

Sop I actually think Harvick is missing a brace bit it's on the side, at least that's what I think I saw

Kevin did a great job with that one.

Bet Ragan needs a shorts change, though.

thanks Strick for noticing MY EARLIER gripe...BUMPER cam at latest incident.

I think we need sound effects for the booth..crickets chirping for punch.

WOW, he LOOKS GREAT ON TV!!! JD, how can he sound so bad at this position but look so well on tv? great smile, looks coherent. What the heck is the deal with the dear doc?

JD..you would think that, but that would imply ESPN using common sense. And since JP is still in the booth, and AB is not..well. Nuff said. Nothing personal againse JP, I just feel AB is better for the booth. Give old Doc a firesuit and mic.

it does in trucks as well.

it only becomes a factor if you go lawnmowing through the grass.

kyle busch had issues with it in Daytona in the truck race for awhile i believe...maybe it was Charlotte

Thanks JP for that update on Harvick...I saw the brace broken as soon as he got out of the grass

That was an odd interview with Brian...

Send in the sheet metal, Do Not update Denny, & for the love of heaven More bumper cams & graphics - I see cars on the track!! Fix that!!!
Nice to hear Doc excited - unfortunately it was about next weeks race....
Sheeshhhh...

JD - I expect a scathing review up later today or tomorrow. This cannot go on like this with ABC.

nrf, you'd have a career with espn if you could just learn to ignore information like that for a bunch of laps! you're providing information WAYYYY too quickly for espn standards.

Odd wads out front. That blows the script.

The name's Bruce Gang. I've posted here before under my real name, Bruce Simmons.

No to mention, helping this hit 600!

Odd Wads LOL

If an odd wad wins the silence will be deafening! And the graphics will be wrong for him.

The funny thing is, this would be so easy to fix with just a couple of simple changes. Hopefully, we can expect that during the off-season.

Sophia said...

JD better have a scathing review or there will be an uprising.

Actually with this being the CHASE and "FIXATION ON bleeping bumper cams" and the like, this blows...sophia types as another bumper cam....a good idea run amok...

ESPN should be FIRED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This coverage is the worst i have ever seen! Keep the wide shots! They have 28 cars in a pack with tons of movement and they keep switching to bumper cams and close up shots.
AWFUL
