Sprint Cup Series At Talladega on ABC Sports

SPEED has handled the pre-race action of practice and qualifying this weekend. Sunday afternoon at 1PM will be the first time viewers will be seeing the ESPN on ABC crew.

Allen Bestwick will start the ball rolling with Brad Daugherty and Rusty Wallace from the Infield Pit Studio. The NASCAR Countdown pre-race show should be interesting with Daugherty having just completed a deal to become a satellite team of Michael Waltrip next season in the Cup Series.

Other than The Chasers, there are some names at the back of the field like Terry Labonte and Kenny Wallace that may be a factor before the race is over. Not necessarily in winning, but in helping someone to achieve that goal.

Last season, ESPN was fascinated by "the big one" and said it over-and-over again during the pre-race show. Lost in the shuffle was the actual story of the race field and what viewers could expect other than accidents.

Dr. Jerry Punch will take over at 2PM and begin the race coverage. He will be joined as usual by Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree. Tim Brewer will be in the Tech Center. Down on pit road will be Shannon Spake, Jamie Little, Dave Burns and Mike Massaro.

It is very hard for the announcers to see the backstretch, so they will be basically watching the same pictures as the viewers at home when they are calling the action on that part of the track. The choice of whether they look out at the track or continue to follow the TV monitors in the booth for the other racing should be easy to determine.

The COT has shown both a tendency to allow two cars to run fast when hooked-up just right and to make for boring racing during the early parts of this race. If teams hang back and gather together it will be up to the ESPN crew to choose to inform the viewers or ignore it.

The TV gang has been making great use of the double video box effect that allows the race to continue for the viewers even as Brewer talks tech or a crew chief is interviewed. Look for increased use of the aerial shot and the speed shots, especially after a restart.

This post will serve to host your comments about the ESPN on ABC presentation of the Sprint Cup Series race from Talladega. To add your TV-related comment, just click on the COMMENTS button below and follow the easy instructions. The rules for posting are located on the right side of the main page. That's pretty sad. Not sure if you saw the coverage maps for this weekend's NFL, but the Bills-Cardinals game was only available in the New York and Phoenix markets. The Bills are a good team, but I blame CBS for that one. Though they're not as bad as ESPN. (had to keep it somewhat on topic)

I think the commercial free part is an advance appology for the fact they will not have post race coverage. (unless somehow the race ends in 5 minutes so we can get a 2 minute post race)

Well, espn/abc got their wish. They have decreed that the big one has happened.

At least they aren't laughing & can't add music to this accident.

If any ABC East Coast stations leave the coverage at 6PM, make sure to tell us that right here with the call letters of the station.

The Biff is pretty cool considering 99 wrecked him...

Wow. That "Chasers Involved" graphic just proved what ESPN thinks of the non-chasers.

After seeing the graphic on those involved in the big one....

WHAT THE HECK ESPN THERE WERE NON CHASERS INVOLVED!!!!!

BTW, anyone notice Nemechek is 2nd?

Anonymous said...

They only listed the chasers involved, are you kidding me??!!

Anonymous said...

well, my name was on the nose of the #88 today and i figured it'd be bump-drafted off by the end of the race. ah well.

too bad espn missed it . . .

jimmie's voice sounded a bit . . . high and stressed just then. guess knaus was trying to make him laugh but johnson wasn't having any of it. i can't say i disagree with his decision to just ride around in the back for the last 10 laps.

Sophia said...

Ok...up first Shannon Spook with biffle....guess Jamie will ask about "feelings".

somebody just needs to STARE at her quietly when she asks that junk...and make her squirm for her own follow up.

Wow..where is Mikey...could he? Where's Kenny wallace?

I guess the good news is so many Chaser were in this and it might not mess up the actual top 12 that much...my math is fuzzy.
WOW..Roush saying Carl started it...would hate to be in his meeting tomorrow.

TWIN should be interesting.

Below yellow line at Daytona/Talladega OK on last lap: Drivers throughout the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series garage were still talking about last week's three-wide finish at Daytona International Speedway. While they admitted the finish was good for television, most wondered why NASCAR allowed Johnny Benson to drive below the yellow line - Daytona's out of bounds line - to jump from third to second in the final 200 yards. Benson wasn't penalized because "if you can see the checkered flag on the last lap, anything goes," according to NASCAR spokesman Owen Kearns.(Augusta Chronicle)(2-24-2007)

I thought Tony gave him plenty of room to get back above the line. I think the problem was that he didn't go back to his spot before he went below the line. Thought that was how it worked, but ESPN certainly wasn't helpful in telling us so I can't be sure!!!!!

Bruce E Simmons said...

Actually Jo, Stewart did come down and make contact with Smith. Smith went low to avoid wrecking him.

Regardless, it will be interesting if NASCAR makes a distinction between Cup and Truck rulings or if that's an "across the board" stance they have on the yellow line.
