In-Progress From Texas: Sprint Cup Series on ABC

Three races to go and this may be the one that confirms Jimmie Johnson as the 2008 champ. The ESPN on ABC bunch is going to be facing a very high-speed track with multiple grooves and lots of fast-paced racing.

Allen Bestwick will start the show at 3PM ET with NASCAR Countdown. Bestwick will be joined by Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty. There have already been two races at TMS this weekend so it will be interesting to see if Countdown chooses to show Nationwide and Truck Series highlights.

The knock on the ESPN production team is that this stretch has been "all Chasers all the time" since the final ten races began. Today may be the litmus test of that theory as Johnson is in position to lock things up with a strong performance. Keep an eye on the topics discussed in the pre-race show and which drivers and personalities are interviewed or profiled.

Once the race coverage begins at 3:30PM, Dr. Jerry Punch will have 17 minutes before the teams take the green flag. Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree will join Punch to call the event. On Saturday afternoon, this trio handled the Nationwide Series race and ran out of gas long before the cars on the track.

This is the second season of NASCAR on ESPN and the network is looking like a group of outsiders. Racing action on the track is now pushed aside for Chase-driven coverage. Interviews and features are all about Johnson, Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle. Perhaps, there might be a Jeff Gordon soundbite thrown-in for old times sake.

It seems as if the reality of this bad coverage has put the ESPN group into some kind of denial. Unfortunately, anger is not going to solve the problem of never telling the story of what is happening on the track beyond the first five cars and the Chasers.

Even in the Nationwide Series race on Saturday, the ESPN crew could never pull-off a full field rundown and struggled to keep viewers understanding who was where and why. Today, with the double agenda of the racers and the Chasers running side-by-side that challenge will only be much more difficult.

Jarrett and Petree are again going to be asked to carry a significant portion of the play-by-play load as Punch has relegated himself to repeating car numbers, driver names and the most basic of information. It is only when he is sending the network to commercial break or reading a scripted promo that Punch regains the excitement that fans used to know from his NASCAR days in the 1980's and 90's.

The ESPN pit reporters are going to have to be ready to deal with a wide variety of issues. This is the time of the season where the casual words and happy chats are over. Tight tempers and drivers fighting for jobs will dominate the agenda in Texas. One too many questions from a pit reporter may result in some rough answers.

With only Phoenix and Homestead left to go, this Texas race is going to be the last truly high-speed and fast-paced live TV race for the NASCAR on ESPN team. A good broadcast will go a long way toward putting things right for next July when the group again takes over the Sprint Cup Series coverage.

The comments about SPEED's F1 broadcast team are interesting - you're right, those guys are always exciting. So is the SPEED crew that covers the Grand-Am series. So are the SPEED crews that do pre- and post-race NASCAR coverage.

There is a common theme here.

This may constitute a blinding flash of the bloody obvious, but has anyone ever thought that maybe it would be a good idea to have the live coverage of America's most popular form of motorsport done by a channel whose raison d'ĂȘtre is motorsport? A channel with a name like, oh, I don't know, SPEED?

On Hotpass I just saw Chad Knaus look to the left.... and then, wait for it, he looked to the right! ESPN tape room, get that on film so the production truck can roll that replay on the full screen under green too. There must be a "hidden signal" in that crazy series of movements too!

Dot said...

@ Strick, you're killing me.

I've read all the comments and others have already covered all the usual problems.

What a mess!

Thanks for the site, JD.

We've been racing for 2 hours...have 2 more to go...it's going to be a long 2 hours.

Now I have some political guy in a TMS sweatshirt and Ryan Newman pillow...:sigh"

I'm curious what ESPN would do if JJ crashed and didn't return from the race.

They'd probably follow him to his motorcoach and watch him drinking a glass of wine, while talking about what he planned to have for dinner.

The Loose Wheel said...

vickers lapped? car just that far off on the 2 tires or what?

alex said...

Let's not give them any ideas...

Anonymous said...

You're a mess Strick!

Yes I love the F1 gang and the race was AWESOME! Literal edge of your seat to see who would win!

The Loose Wheel said...

thank you andy petree

Are you still a phenom when you're laps down?

J.D.,

It was interesting to read Junior's quote that the season is too long. Guess he read your article this week.

From Jerry Bonkowski on Yahoo.com:

Foremost in his mind: the length of the season.

"We have saturated the market with race after race after race," Earnhardt said. "The NFL, they do such a great job. I hate to keep comparing to them and using them as examples, but they do the best job.

"They give you just enough to keep you wanting more. The season ends before you want it to. You get just enough to get excited and then it's all over and there's such a long wait. The model works."

that was my thought, dot. you should be at least on the lead lap.

Daly Planet Editor said...

This Jimmie Johnson story has them all in knots. Not the script they practiced. Notice how they cannot stay with JJ and actually tell the story for a bunch of laps?

Charlie said...

43 cars still on the track. That is pretty good. If they showed something more then just one and two car shots you might know this.

Daly Planet Editor said...

dot,

Punch does the driver name, the car number and one catch phrase about each driver.

Watch for it and it will make you crazy.

Anonymous said...

lagano I think, won't live up to the hype next year.

Anonymous said...

Amazing how little ESPN has to say about the dominant driver in this race.

Anonymous said...

anon..what can they say? he is blowing the field away.

Anonymous said...

I keep going from HotPass to ABC/ESPN, kind of like seeing that guy pulled over on the side of the road your glad your not him but you want to see what happens to him.

Tracy D said...

Hi all, joining you late again. Can only take so much ESPN. Nice that DJ keeps talking up Reutimann, who is doing a great job.

Vicky D said...

JP you are breaking our hearts talking about JJ. Give us a break!

Matt said...

To the Logano comments.. I kinda feel bad for him. So much is expected of him, yet he's being thrown into this.. just like Casey Atwood was.

stricklinfan82 said...

Dot, I'm not kidding, he really did! The movement was done at a slightly faster rate than what ESPN showed us on that last full-screen replay, so I'm sure all the crew members are well aware that he was trying to get a different message across with that particular hidden signal. ESPN has completely caught on to them so I think Chad's going to have to use the NFL coach method of putting the play sheet over his face at all times so his "signals" aren't stolen. I can only imagine what would happen if he sneezed, ESPN might faint! A Bill Belichick / Phil Jackson / Joe Torre comparison must be in the works here by ESPN pretty soon. What we've seen from Chad today with all those hidden signals on that pit box has been that brilliant.

Michael Waltrip could have a field day tomorrow with this manufactured intricate hidden system of signals angle ESPN has played today.

Dot said...

The coverage notwithstanding, this race is pretty boring.

I agree, Matt.

Kenn Fong said...

J.D.,

The only criticism I have of HotPass is the crazy way they display the laps. They start out with the actual lap number, and at the half-way point chance to "Laps to go."

3rd round of green flag stops. If JJ can catch short runs, he will get back on the lead lap. If it keeps having long runs, he's dog meat. The car is horrid after 30 laps.

ESPN is confused. Its long green runs, with JJ a lap down and Carl leading...no shrub, no JJ, no wrecks to play rock music too...they must be losing their minds.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anyone listening to the radio call? How is that going? Are they following the JJ story or just concentrating on the race?

The Loose Wheel said...

black car without a sponsor....probably the 01. the 38 and 28 both have sponsors since the 28 is white and blue and the 38 is flying the citi colors

JD, SPEED blurb by Punch for the CTS. Did you see it?

PRN is mostly following the race complete with a full run down. PRN has lots of Commmercials. Also today they lost their minds a couple of times with "if the race ends now the points would be..." but someone keeps saying "it won't end now" lol

Tracy D said...

Thanks, David.
Wonder if Reutimann would rethink bumping the leader out of the way today?

The Loose Wheel said...

nah dont make shrubby a young gun!

i like the guy but he wouldnt fit that mold.

BK or dinger would work...perhaps reed

Dot said...

@ Matt, I'd rather see Reut get up his a$$ and pass for the win. Turnabouts fair play.

Anonymous said...

Tony just went lap down Jr is next. Time for caution. Bring out gum wrappers...cue the debris

Daly Planet Editor said...

Tell ya what, they better start to establish a storyline right now if they want to pay it off later.

All this car-hopping and scattered coverage has left things a mess.

Now, Punch is hosting a talk show and introducing soundbites under green flag racing.

It'll be interesting to see if Bevo says the race was as boring as ESPN is making it to be.

Dot said...

Jr a lap down. In line for LD when we get the "debris" caution.

The Loose Wheel said...

Here is your storyline, #2 in points is putting together a masterful performance in pursuit of the #48 for the second straight week, racing their guts out. Meanwhile 2 guys hungry for a win are chasing him with superb runs of their own. Reutimann, McMurray and Edwards should be the storyline. Yes, keep tabs of JJ because your obligated to keep the points situation monitored, but it IS NOT your main storyline of the day. Its secondary to the battle for the win since the winning battle involves #2 in the points.

Matt said...

@ dot,

Haha that sounds even better.

alex said...

JD,
Very little JJ talk on PRN. They're currently doing a field rundown, but all they're saying about JJ is "6th car one lap down". Most of the talk is lead lap racing.

stricklinfan82 said...

A lap-by-lap summary of how the points margin between Johnson and Edwards has changed all day long huh? Let me help you with that ESPN, because the information you displayed there was erroneous:

Lap 1: +183
Lap 25: +183
Lap 79: +183
Lap 120: +183
Lap 200: +183
Right Now: +183

The usefulness of a "Points as of now" graphic can be argued, I don't mind them so much because it is nice to occasionally know how the points race will be impacted if they finish this way.

However, what I don't think anyone can argue about is how completely useless outdated "points as of now" graphics are. What does it matter how many points ahead Johnson would have been if the race ended 20 laps go vs. 65 laps ago vs. 150 laps ago vs. on the pace lap?

I just don't get that one, I'm sorry.

Anonymous said...

@david your new script makes sense. sounds like radio coverage of the real race.

Vicky D said...

I wish Bevo could check in with us to see if the track announcer is talking about JJ all race.

BEST RUN OF THE YEAR????????????????

Anonymous said...

So I just turned the race on a few minutes ago and wondered why so few cars are on the lead lap? This isn't a short track race. Did a lot of cars get caught out by making green flag stops and then a yellow?

Next question, are the nonChase drivers running in the top ten getting much coverage?

The Loose Wheel said...

Dale Jr caution...

@ Jo, no, Burton gets it. Someone in the tower was asleep at the switch. After watching this race, who can blame them?

@ JD, yes, once for gum wrappers. A guy was picking up a few things on the track. Too small for us to see.

stricklinfan82 said...

I think I've finally figured it out. ESPN is trying to get themselves "fired". They want NASCAR to dump them so they can turn around and sue them for everything they're worth for violating their contract.

They've done everything to make a mockery of this sport since they started covering it. It's been mocked across the board on ESPN shows, fewer and fewer practice sessions are aired on TV, tape-delay has been re-introduced to NASCAR on a full-time basis, races have been dumped to ESPN Classic, drivers and owners have been inappropriately portrayed in negative ways on TV, and on track racing has been ignored for scripted storylines.

Now today they're manufacturing this ridiculous garbage about hidden signals on the pit box DURING pit stops and blatantly alerting viewers to listen for inappropriate language to come across the air.

There can be no other excuse, this must be sabatoge.

"misjudged" his run off 2...

I was close to what his excuse would be...

It was payback. you could hear it in his voice.

PRN interview: same stuff as the ESPN one

DG was just a tad disingenyous there . . . and then Dr. Punch says "we'll let NASCAR decide"

Excuse me - maybe you should be "impartial", but DJ, Rusty etc certainly do not.

Blamed the spotter in turn 1, then he "misjudged his run" off turn 2.

-DG on PRN.

I wonder if DG realy believes his story of what happened.

Good - they got JPM and DG (who isn't a very good liar), now get a NASCAR official.

Oh, Shannon should have called BS on that one live on TV

Come on, John. That's just asking too much of her--for starters, she'd have to understand what happened to be able to do that.

DG "misjudged" ???

Oh, give me a break.

Boy, DG tap danced all over that one. One poster called it. Don't remember who.

It feels like DJ and Andy are loosing their mojo. This should be the best part of the season...and we all just want it to end.

I have no clue what is going on. Not the least bit sorry I went and watched a movie for an hour and a half. I hope that Twin does a hefty recap Monday so I know what happened.

JD...Shannon call him out on national TV?

Do you really think she has the credentials to do such a thing?

I wish they would have had a Massaro on this one or a Dave Burns because those are 2 guys I think that could walk the fine line between calling BS and yet still keeping it professional
