Live Blog: Sprint Cup Series Banquet Telecast 9PM ET

Tonight we will be watching with you the post-season banquet for the Sprint Cup Series on the ESPN Classic Network at 9PM Eastern Time.

The program is going to be originated live and will be hosted by ESPN's Dr. Jerry Punch. The musical guest is Matchbox Twenty and the comedian is John Pinette.

Believe it or not, NASCAR has a deal in the works with Kevin Costner and tonight he will be providing a historical feature in the banquet telecast. Click here to read the story about his bigger involvement in other NASCAR projects.

Tonight is going to be unlike any NASCAR banquet I have ever seen. The major US automakers spent the day asking the Federal Government for financial help in order to survive the next few months.

The news of the demise of Petty Enterprises as an entire organization still has many in shock and there may well be more news of that kind even before the telecast. This is a very tricky road to walk where a live TV show is concerned.

Pay too much attention to the economic topics and the wind goes out of the sails where the racing and the top ten drivers are concerned. Meanwhile, trying to pretend that everything is just fine gives the illusion of millionaire drivers who could care less about the struggles of everyday Americans.

One positive note is that Punch is a veteran host and is outstanding in these types of situations. He is well-spoken on a big stage and was a good host of this event in the past. Hopefully, the participants from the teams and the sanctioning body who also speak will reflect the reality of the evening in terms of striking a good balance in their comments.

ESPN Classic has been the home to this event since the new TV contract began in 2007. The show will re-air on ESPN2 on Dec. 8th from 2 to 4PM Eastern Time.

We welcome your comments before, during and after this telecast. Before you submit your opinion, please check the rules on the right side of the main page. Comments will appear shortly after they are submitted. Thanks for taking the time to stop by on what should be a very interesting night for NASCAR.

Winding down with thanks to all MRN and who worked this year.
Just signed off.

JD, Sorry I got distracted. Jimmie finished about 5 minutes ago. MRN is wrapping up.

AMS, thank you very much. Just trying to get a handle on it for the column.

So, in real life the entire banquet is over and yet on ESPN Classic the live banner is in the corner of the screen.

Imagine that....

RED: Makes sense... Johnson seems to have some hollywood friends... you see different ones in his pit box through out the season.

Thanks Richard as well...

This is as close to "Live" as NASCAR will get.

Why do they insist on lying?
Oh I forgot, BSPN knows better than us,fans

I'd *love8 to see Jeff Burton run for office! He's a great speaker!

TexasRaceLady said...

BSPN is just working in the commercials so they won't miss the "excitement".

Guess that's how they can cheekily put LIVE in the corner.

OK - I'm now done with this "comic" mute is on till he is off.

omg Frosty the snowman!!! Nan Zipideli looks like she is having fun

so, jd: in all seriousness, what is espn's thinking behind continuing to present the broadcast as "live" when it's clearly not? i mean, is the thought that no one will know? or care? do they think they gain points by claiming to be broadcasting live even when folks KNOW they aren't?

i'm not being sarcastic (for once): i just truly fail to understand the thought process. do you think anyone from espn will come clean about this?

Daly Planet Editor said...

red,

They might not come clean, but we will make sure fans know the real deal...no Wendy pun intended.

Glenn said...

Pretty much JD.
It looks like ESPN is mixing up the order of what's went on. That is only a guess, I've only caught parts of the video, but it seems some of this happened different than the radio.

JD, just put your feet up and have a glass of wine. Makes the evening much nicer.

Newracefan said...

I think the Music and Comedian are strategically placed for TV and mostlikely not in the same order as the actual banquet. The drivers obviously have to be and may have been one after another. I think Petty was before dinner then so was Costner and BettyJane.

Anonymous said...

That second set by the comedian was pretty funny I thought. Yeah it didn't have to do with nascar but whatever. It looked like the crowd was having a good time.......except for Humpy. He was behind a group of people laughing just totally stone faced. If that didn't say the overall feel of the night. Hey, that gives me an idea. Why not have Humpy come up with the banquet format? He'd have things blowing up and stuff!

Anonymous said...

hmm jerry punch doing commercials for other sports while hosting a nascar thing..just like he does during the races.

JD, you'd be better off "herding cats" than trying to keep this bunch out of trouble. ROTFL

red said...

JD said (in part):
"They might not come clean, but we will make sure fans know the real deal..."

but see, jd, that's the problem. as great as this site is for all of us, there are literally millions of fans watching the banquet right now who are not looped in here and who have no idea that what they're being told is "live" is anything but.

espn will, of course, "get away" with it once again and will not be called to answer by their media colleagues (for the most part.) it's dishonest by espn and lousy reporting by the rest of the media. all it would take is a single column, headlined "ESPN "live" coverage?" by say, Sports Illustrated and the lie would be exposed.

any wonder why i detest espn?

Glenn said...

I almost did.
Richard provoked me.:)

Well, I'm an English teacher(retired) and I'm not frowning. Since he's referring to BSPN, "live-er" is perfectly acceptable --- I mean, after all, they make up sports stories, we can make up words. Right?

I really don't see the big deal about it being tape delayed as long as we get to see all of it. They insert commercials in the races and look what we miss. Did any of you think this banquet would be commercial free?

jennifer6973 said...

@Tracy

It's not a big deal that it's tape delayed, it's just a big deal that ESPN is saying they are LIVE in the corner of the screen.

Especially since we know the show started at 7 on MRN and is now over.

red said...

karen, it's not about wanting it to be commercial free.

first up, it's about being honest. saying it;s live when it;s not is dishonest. why not just drop the "live" tag instead?

second, it's the banquet, for heaven's sake, not a race! they can take a commercial break whenever they need to just by how they manage the stage!

and now lewis black is finished. what to do? what to do?

Dot said...

In defense of BSPN. The show was live when they taped it.

Sophia said...

For red and others

Great Googly Moogly is a phrase which has been used in popular music lyrics (particularly Rhythm & Blues) by various artists dating back to the 1950s [1]

Known examples include "Weird Al Yankovic's "Genius in France", Frank Zappa's "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow" medley [2] (1973), The Temptations' "Ball of Confusion" (1970) and Howlin' Wolf's recording of St. Louis Jimmy Oden's Going Down Slow (1962).

There is some evidence (unverified) of earlier uses by other musicians:
At the very least, R&B legend Screamin' Jay Hawkins uttered it as an exuberant exclamation of extreme excitement in "Person to Person" (1957): the line in question finding SJH extolling his far-away (cheerbabe?) girlfriend to "bring your big fine foxy great googly moogly lord-look-at-that self on home."

I’ve got some vague recollection that SJH used the phrase in other tunes – and I know Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper lovingly borrowed it on a track or two of their first few albums in the mid-1980s. --[3]

How can you time shift a program (though they won't cop to it), and still run over by this much?

Its BSPN & they can ( & will)do anything! It doesn't need to make sense. Its a BSPN thing

bad directing? stupidity?

seriously, anon, it's espn: they've mastered this sort of sloppiness.

They even left the "live" graphic in during the closing rollout. What knuckleheads.

Mystery Science Theater 3000. It's a show that riffs bad shows.... this would have been perfect for them.

They're now called Cinematic Titanic.

Claire B. said earlier that JJ seemed to be looser than the other 2 years and he was having fun this year. I thought he had a very good speech. He's had enough practice.
I hope all those who cut out early did record it. The best part was the ending.
I still love the bottom line "2008 NASCAR Awards Banquet Live". Amazing
