Live Blogging The Nationwide Series And Camping World Trucks

It's a back-to-back NASCAR TV doubleheader on Saturday. ABC covers the Nationwide Series race from Talladega and then SPEED hosts the Camping World Trucks at Kansas Speedway.

Allen Bestick will begin the TV activity at 2:30PM on your local ABC television station. Rusty Wallace is still on vacation, so Dale Jarrett will join Bestwick and Brad Daughery for the pre-race show.

Jarrett will then head upstairs (no easy task at Talladega) and join Dr. Jerry Punch and Andy Petree to call the race. Down on pit road will be Shannon Spake, Jamie Little, Dave Burns and Vince Welch.

This TV production team is looking to recover from a rough outing in Phoenix last week. The entire telecast focused on Carl Edwards and Kyle Busch from start-to-finish. Green flag racing on the track was actually put aside while viewers watched Edwards' damaged car being inspected in the garage area.

Punch could hardly contain his enthusiasm when Busch got a lap back in the race. Needless to say, neither Busch or Edwards won the event. ESPN had egg on its face having wasted all this time profiling the two Cup drivers. All the stories of the other teams and drivers were pushed off the table.

Talladega should offer an opportunity to get back on the right track with long laps and pack racing. Hopefully, this event will allow the ESPN production team to highlight all the drivers and include as many sponsors as possible in this struggling series.

ABC is on the air until 6PM with the Nationwide coverage. SPEED comes on at 5:30PM with the CWTS pre-race show. So, once again NASCAR fans will be asked to choose between two NASCAR TV partners due to a scheduling conflict that should have been resolved long before this weekend.

Krista Voda is in Talladega for the NASCAR on Fox coverage, so Rick Allen will host the CWTS pre-race show from Kansas. Phil Parsons will join Allen while Ray Dunlap and Adam Alexander will handle the pit road coverage.

The trucks have a very diverse field that should result in some interesting racing. The TV crew has a very basic set-up and fans should see the old-style racing coverage that emphassizes the racing and keeps things basic.

This post will serve to host your comments about both the Nationwide Series on ABC and the CWTS on SPEED. To add your TV-related comments, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting.

Thanks for stopping by The Daly Planet.

Wow! Thank goodness Matt is ok. They should have not shown Katie until SHE knew he was ok, not when tv knew he was ok.

And speaking of Twitter, what do you think about Michael McDowell twittering during the race (if it is really him)?

darbar said...

Well, Matt did say RAGAN was the cause of his crash. Like he said, you can't hit that hard when they're changing lanes.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Jamie is on a roll today. And it's not a good roll.

Sophia said...

I was APPALLED the CRASS shot to his wife before we knew he was ok.

BSPN..you just keep jumping the shark a little more.

WOW. JD, I won't forget that either.

TASTELESS and INVASION of PRIVACY

@ Karen, we'll never know. He's the "invisible" Earnhardt

At least the have someone covering the infield care center

Daly Planet Editor said...

That guy Bob Parsons from Go Daddy is the creepiest guy I have ever worked with. Why and how he can stay in this sport is amazing.

If you have ever seen the crap on his website, including the videos, it really will creep you out.

Jamie has said some crazy things today - she should have taken a pregnant pause before making that statement!

Jamie on a hard roll...that's a lunch I'd pass on. ;)

Daly Planet Editor said...

I just replayed that crash and there is mostly silence. Punch has reverted to his reporter role in asking questions.

kbaskins said...

That was really tacky showing a very pregnant Katie freaked and crying before we knew if Matt was OK. ESPN are like a bunch of vultures, just waiting for something bad to happen.

Hard roll...mmmmmm.

Dot said...

@ VickyD. you're killing me.

I don't think Ragan is totally at fault. Who wouldn't fill the hole in front of them? I'm sure he wasn't expecting Matt to come back down.

hotaru-raganbaby_6 said...

This should be interesting.

darbar said...

The crap on the Go Daddy website is real nasty. I guess that's why we have freedom of speech, even creepy speech.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Imagine how high a Mike Joy or Rick Allen would have the excitement level right now.

bevo said...

I was one of those last year that said to give Jamie a break. She did a pretty good job back in the IRL coverage but I can't handle her anymore.

hotaru-raganbaby_6 said...

Dot- THANK YOU!

Also watching the Rolex Sports Car race... where my driver there just got bumped off course.

Anonymous said...

It was awhile ago, but Jerry Punch said something about Newman being Algaier's PENSKE teammate.

Anonymous said...

I'm glad I was reading and missed them showing Katie. That was horrible timing :(. BSPN is batting their usual 0 for 1000.

Now we have to add Twitter to our list of sites we have to turn to in order to find out WHAT'S going on.

@darbar--it's REgan Smith and David RAgan for easy reference. Like the spelling of Robby Gordon vs. Robbie Resier or Robbie Loomis "if you're a Gordon it's a 'y' if you're a Reiser or Loomis it's an 'ie'". A gal on one of my Yahoo groups would go nuts if she saw you spell it Robbie Gordon.

darbar said...

The ABC station in Milwaukee has shortened the screen to show the NFL draft.

Anonymous said...

Oh No! Mr. Alligator and Gerhart :(

Newracefan said...

I actually backed it up to see if the shot of Katie was as bad as I thought it was, it actually was worse. Say all you want (and I have) about Fox they never would have done that and Mike and the boy would have handled the crash 100 times better than that. Oh Lord here we go again

The J said...

poor gerhart this is 2 days in a row with a hard hit

Dot said...

I told roommate Shruba Dubba would cause this. They really need to penalize these drivers who bump in the turns.

@ darbar, poor you.

Vicky D said...

The older you are the more it hurts when you hit the wall!

hotaru-raganbaby_6 said...

MRN is behind... poor Justin and Bobby...

And with 3TG.

In reference to the driver spellings- It upset me whenever my dad confused Smith and David. One is waaaaaay better looking than the other ;)

Drat, that Gainsco 99 won at VIR. Can't stand that team.

Anonymous said...

They need to add a camera or two on the backstretch ...

The in-field cameras just are missing too much ...

bevo said...

@VickyD-

Who needs a wall for that? :)
Heck I've gotten to the point where I hurt myself while I'm sleeping

darbar said...

Newracefan, I just did the same and you're right. Just plain insensitive and stupid on the part of ESPN

hotaru-raganbaby_6 said...

I'm so nervous 'bout the end, I'm shaking.

Dot said...

@ bevo, now you're killing me. Happens to my roommate too.

darbar said...

Why the heck does Jamie always have to say "you heard him say". No kidding, Jamie. She's really awful.

hotaru-raganbaby_6 said...

Leave it to y'all to calm my nerves!

Here we go!

darbar said...

Man, I get nervous getting within a few feet of the car in front of me on I94

The J said...

oh man it looked like raines was gonna win it for a second

Anonymous said...

Congratulations to David Ragan and all his fans :)

Dot said...

That'll make up to Jack.

kbaskins said...

That was perfectly timed!

Well done David!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Someone please wake Jerry Punch!!!

He missed the entire thing because the script did not work out for Jr.

Wait till you guys go back and replay that finish line call.

I gaurentee you we will be hearing the radio call on all the replays.

Dot said...

@ hotaru, congrats.

Dot said...

Congrats to David!

bevo said...

Dot said...

JP got the replay right.

congrats to ragan on his win and now it's time to switch over to the trucks!

Sophia said...

Bevo

I am with you on those SHAKEY CAMS. Dang. Can't they afford to steady it.

I hate needing anti nausea meds to watch a race.

Course, with the broadcasts we have seen, it's always helpful. :)

P.S. he can't help it but am SO TIRED Of the HOME DEPOT commercial

Dot said...

I'm afraid we're stuck with Punch.

Haven't you noticed in the world today you can screw up your job and still keep it? Think of the CEOs of the car companies, banks, etc.

Newracefan said...

Did JP just call him Ken Ragan

Dot said...

Let's hear from the "mouth" Clint.

@ nrf, yes he did. I just asked roommate if Ken won the race.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Truck Series is looking like RaceDay with the Hollywood Squares deal. Interesting.

bevo said...

nrf-

Just be glad he didn't say Ronald Reagan :)

red said...

ahhh, man, i am so sad: truck pre-race show is looking suspiciously like a fox piece of crap. what happened to our "best in the business" broadcast team? "nascar tools"? really?
i'm embarassed for them right now.

The J said...

i dont know whats sadder, that speed actually did that, or that thse drivers dont know what nascar stands for

Dot said...

How does it feel to see someone else win the race? She has got to go.

red said...

hey the J? did you find yourself yelling at them like i did? as i say: embarssing all around.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Not the best day for Jamie and Shannon.

Dot said...

@ bevo, I can no longer type. I'm dead from the Planeteers killing me.

Vicky D said...

Glad Raines got the interview on tv for finishing 4th.

Charlie said...

I have not read all the comments on this forum yet but I don't understand why the sound is off with the people talking.
And why did Shannon when talking to M. Waltrip bring up the comment by Clint when she knew that it was not M. Waltrips fault hitting Clint because she had already seen the replay and knew it was the 20 car that caused the wreck and that Clint will be taking back what he said after he sees the replay. Was she just trying to stir things up?

Dot said...

JP just stuttered over the who won the race. I bet he wanted to say JR.

Sophia said...

@Dot

I still LIVID over showing Matt's wife.

Vicky D said...

I hope by the next race Jamie & Shannon read the book - Pit Reporting for Dummies - before they ask one question of a driver retiring from the race.

SonicAD said...

Pre-race ceremonies were probably done during the pre-race show and skipped over on the broadcast (though I didn't see it), because rain is on the way and going by the radar it's gonna be there pretty soon.

Sophia said...

Positives:
- Good coverage of series regulars today
- Liked # of interviews of people taken out of the race and after the race
- Pretty good camera angles
- DJ, Andy, AB, Dave Burns and Vince Welch fantastic as usual

Negative:
- I didn't like the shot of Mrs. Kenseth right after the 16 flipped over. It isn't right.
- I feel for Jerry Punch because he is stuck in a position he just isn't meant for. We need Marty or Allen in the booth.
- Still did not advertise Cup series.

The J said...

btw, if anyone didnt get a chance to see the espn shot of kenseth's wife after the wreck, its already on youtube

Daly Planet Editor said...

The Kenseth thing and Jaimie confronting Michael are going to come back to haunt this crew.

bevo said...

They finished the Indy Lights qualifying 20 minutes before the start of the Trucks and rain is on the way

bevo said...

JD,

I still say people need to be at least suspended for that stunt and it needs to be made public.

That was beyond tasteless.

bevo said...

Looks like rain in 15 minutes and heavy stuff in an hour

Newracefan said...

I think more than anything is the backlash that should happen from the drivers/teams for taking advantage of their family. As far as the Mikey/Clint thing, Mikey may not be a Jeff Gordon but do you really want to fight a war of words with the man, I really do not belive he is as much of a goofball as he pretends to be. He parlayed that goofball image into cup ownership that is has a driver 9th in points.

Sophia said...

@ JD 6:22, what could happen to them? And who would punish them? I watched the Youtube clip. If you blink, you'd miss Katie. It's still wrong to show it though.

@ hotaru, Sorry. I added an extra B in the duba.

Newracefan said...

OT, sorry, JD.

A lot of S&Ps in the truck race: #08, 47, 57, 21, 22, 7, 85 (all parked in first 30 laps)

Anonymous said...

MRN said that the Kansas Speedway area is also under tornado watch ...

Dot said...

Boy, talk about the S&Ps. Only 21 trucks on the lead lap. The others are laps down or off/out.

Dot said...

@ Anon 6:36, didn't mean to copy your comment. Great minds......

@ Karen, I wondered the same thing.

bevo said...

@Karen-

Looked like they went below the line during one of their laps. Barnhardt was reviewing it.

hotaru-raganbaby_6 said...

I'm sick of the All Star stuff too. Makes me not want to watch.

Karen said...

Bevo, yep. Just watching Dario and looks like he did go below the white line.

Dot said...

What kind of advantage do you get going X feet under the white line?

Just being rhetorical.

bevo said...

@Karen-

Sorry, forgot they were televising it now. I watched it live earlier on the Indy site.

They're about to get hammered at the track. Big storm rolling into Lawrence. Lots of hail.

Karen said...

Helio, too. Do they have to go to the back?

The J said...

@NRF

you'd think with the amount of times theyve shown promos, we would have the date and time memorized.

bevo said...

@Karen-

Yep, starting 21 and 22

Dot said...

How soon will they stop the race to get the fans out of there?

Why are there no lights @ KS. Isn't that one of the France's golden tracks?

Dot said...

Comment con't. Lights won't help today/tonight with the storm brewing. I meant in general.

bevo said...

Not good when you've got one of those storm chasers streaming from the road :)

Karen said...

Yep, starting 21 and 22.

Well, that blows.

Dot said...

@ Karen, IRL using NASCARs rule book. It's not like they were driving on the apron the whole lap.

bevo said...

Yeah, they have to get the fans out of the stands. Hail and lightening are not to be messed with.

The J said...

would this be 2 postponed truck races in a row?? cant be good for the series

Newracefan said...

The only good thing about the all star race comercial is that I finally saw the T Rex car.

Daly Planet Editor said...

They should empty the grandstands and stop fooling around.

bevo said...

@Dot-

NASCAR can go below line for qualifying. IRL can't.

Dot said...

They really should stop the race for today. Nothing like sitting on a metal seat in the stands. I'd already be on the way to my car.

@ JD, I was typing when you made your comment.

@ bevo, thanks. It does seem like a dumb rule to me. It looked accidental when I tuned in and saw it with Helio.

bevo said...

You can watch the storm chaser following it on tornadovideos.net

bevo said...

Uh Rick? It's coming from the southwest. Not really a good thing to see clearing to the east :)

Tracy D said...

Hi all - been watching downstairs on the big screen.
Does anyone know anything about Frank Deiny Jr and what happened? He's a local racer with his own shop in Hanover County. I had no idea he got a truck ride! I see he's out.

Karen said...

Bevo, puts Danica in 3rd spot.

Dot said...

Can JB work on his helmet during a red flag? Don't they consider that equipment?

Funny, he couldn't find his pit either. And he wears glasses. Time for a new prescription. lol

bevo said...

BTW the speedway is at the northwest corner of I-70 and I-435 and 35 if you're using radar

Dot said...

@ Tracy, he replaced Fitzpatrick.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Tracy,

There were some field fillers in this event that started and then parked.

He might be in that club.

JD

Tracy D said...

Dot, thanks! I thought Fitzpatrick's team was calling a time out for lack of sponsorship. Bet Frank brought Bailey's with him - he's had them for years as a sponsor.

bevo said...

@Karen-

She usually does pretty good at 1 and 1/2 tracks, just depends on her pit crew

Tracy D said...

I'll bet that's it, JD. The son of a good friend of mine works in Deiny's shop, which is why I'm interested.

Anonymous said...

I'm a bit late to the Nationwide party here, but, the constant, constant, constant, constant use of bumper cams has got to stop. I want to see the pack, not Junior's hood or or any driver's bumper. It takes away all perspective of what is going on.
Why do the director's love that shot so much? I know we'll see it in the Cup race too.
I've gotten to the point where I get really angry every time they switch to that shot. I go from seeing twenty cars to about ten percent of one car.

red said...

so, during this rain/lightning delay, can i just add my two cents about the katie kenseth shot following her husband's wreck? i didn't get to see the race and so have now watched it online.

the producer who decided that was "a money shot" should be ashamed of himself. it ran so far counter to traditional nascar media practice following a severe wreck as to be unfathomable to me. there is no excuse for having the camera follow her as she headed to the care center and somone had to have made a conscious decision to follow her as she left the pit box (where she usually watches and scores the race) and began the walk to her husband on his way to the care center.

in my mind, drivers are fair game and post-wreck interviews are part of the business for them. but families are off limits -- no exceptions.

and the fact that it was a brief shot of katie doesn't make it acceptable. the decision to even have that shot televised-- however brief -- is what is so despicable to me. that camera person was following a wife who didn't know how her husband was following a horrible wreck. WHO thought that was a great piece of tv work?!?

appalling. just appalling.

Have to agree with you on Kyle B and Logano. Though i am weary of the hype around Joey he has NOTHING to do with that and for a young man, except for a couple of comments he made, seems to do well for an 18 year old kid.

I would've been an idiot at his age with that kind of pressure.

KY must have never been taught about GRATITUDE.

stricklinfan82 said...

I just got back from watching the Nationwide race and didn't want to read any other comments in fear that I might have the outcome of the Truck race spoiled, so please forgive me if I'm repeating others' thoughts long after the discussion of the Nationwide race ended. I just couldn't sit down to watch the Truck race until I made my thoughts on the ESPN production truck heard.

I didn't think the production of the on-track racing portion of the Nationwide race was bad at all. I did however have a giant problem with two very poor judgment calls that truck made today:

1.) Taking Clint Bowyer's radio comments about Michael Waltrip in the immediate aftermath of their crash out of context AGAIN (just like they did at Bristol or Richmond or somewhere a year or two ago, I don't remember the exact race off the top of my head) in an attempt to create "drama" and "controversy". It was clear (just like it was on that other night as memory serves) that Michael was an innocent victim and Clint spouted off before he knew the 'whole story'. Despite this, ESPN again decided to air the out-of-context taped radio transmission on a delayed basis, and then immediately run to Michael with the comments during his live interview.

2.) The second was far more serious and completely disgusting. The first incident was clearly intentional and malicious, but I really really hope the second was an honest mistake. If it wasn't a mistake and some member of that production truck actually uttered the command "switch to that shot of Kenseth's scared to death, crying, pregnant wife!" just seconds after his horrifying flip and before we had a clue if he was okay, that was perhaps the sickest thing I have ever seen done on a NASCAR broadcast. I didn't catch the post-race show so I apologize if this already occurred, but in my opinion at a bare minimum ESPN and the individual at fault for making that decision owe the viewers and most importantly Matt and Katie Kenseth a since apology.

Anonymous said...

@stricklinfan--as usual you're spot on sir! Those were the same complaints we echoed here! Yes it was sickening to have them once again try to create drama and rivalry where there was none. And showing poor Katie who only knew Matt was in a horrible crash and no clue on his condition! I missed the original airing during the race due to reading in another tab but just watched it on YouTube and her face was so heartbreaking!

I cannot believe (!) that ESPN is again trying to create friction between Michael Waltrip and Clint Bowyer. This is the second time Bowyer has said insulting things about Waltrip in an incident he will later learn was not Waltrip's fault (at all - this was Logano's fault). But that doesn't stop ESPN from airing comments -- not so much of Bowyer's frustration, but of him insulting Waltrip's talent and standing as an active driver.

Really sickening. I am just glad FOX has the race tomorrow because if ESPN was doing Cup they would probably replay it again!

ESPN's shot of Mrs. Kenseth was unacceptable, but it HAS unfortunately been done before. A few years ago in the July Daytona race, FOX (yes, FOX) showed a live shot of Martha Nemechek reacting in horror as her son Joe hit the wall head on (this was only a year or two after Earnhardt's death, and the crashes looked a lot alike). Joe was fine, but the network had no way of knowing it at the time.

FOX was also the network that showed an in-car shot of a barely-conscious David Reutimann after his crash at California a couple of years ago.

Just pointing out that ESPN is not the only network that has made such an insensitive, cold, idiotic decision. It seems to be an industry-wide problem.
