Live Blogging The CWTS Race From Dover On SPEED

This is live coverage of the rain-delayed Camping World Truck Series race from Dover that was supposed to run on Friday afternoon. SPEED is covering the race live and it should be a good one.

Krista Voda starts the telecast with the pre-race show at 5:30PM. She will be joined by Ray Dunlap and Adam Alexander as reporters. Once the race coverage is underway at 6PM, it will be Rick Allen calling the action. He will be joined by Phil Parsons and Michael Waltrip.

The day has already seen a fast-paced Nationwide Series event and the track is fast. Passing is still at a premium because the track is green from the Friday rain, but the Trucks should be able to put on a good show.

This is SPEED's normally straightforward presentation of racing. No infield, no cutaway car and no hype. Just classic race coverage and good commentary.

This post will host your comments on the SPEED coverage of the Truck Series race from Dover. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting.

Thanks for taking some time out of your day to stop by The Daly Planet.

Did I hear Krista correctly, they cleared the stands of the NW fans for the fans to attend the truck race? Wow what a hassle that sounds.

Daly Planet Editor said...

That is always a hassle when there is a doubleheader with different tickets.

Anonymous said...

Why is Kyle Busch referred to as SDDD? Been racking my brain for a while and thought I would go ahead and ask...Thanks

Daly Planet Editor said...

One of our regulars is a Kyle hater. He has a pet name for him that others like.

schruba-duba-ding-dong. I think he has lots of time on his hands.

Karen said...

They should turn those NW fans right around after ticketholders for CWTS get to their seats and let them in for free.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Hope these guys stay safe, this is a tough track for these types of vehicles.

The Loose Wheel said...

Im still bothered by how they did that pit road. figured it would make more sense to extend it off of turn 1 instead of turn 4 since it was already one of the toughest to get onto.

Should be a good race though...SPEED looks solid so far

Hotaru1787 said...

Me... I came up with it during a trip to South FL back in April.

Okay, this race I can watch/listen to start to end. LOVE the trucks.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Every time I watch Krista host the CWTS pre-race show I wonder about how having her in the Hollywood Hotel would chance the NASCAR on Fox telecasts.

Anonymous said...

I wonder how a freshly pissed off SDDD will be in this race. He may be on a mission :)

@Vicky--it really does.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Kyle has a little something to prove...huh?

bevo said...

Well ought to be an interesting race, Kyle might be on a rampage ;)

Dot said...

I bet SDDD will be driving like he has a bee in his helmet.

Vicky D said...

It didn't take long for a yellow. Poor JR but good truck control for Skinner.

Hotaru1787 said...

I didn't want to do any more whining... but, SDDD, darn it again!

Different race, same complaints from me.

cvt said...

Today is my first time joining the blogging on TDP,although I read it daly.

I've concluded if this microcosm is any indication of the larger NASCAR audience, then the drop in ratings is due to the Kyle Busch derangement syndrome.

Vicky D said...

Update. This isn't Nascar but Paul Tracy will be driving the #14 AJ Foyt indy car this weekend at Milwaukee. He's in for Vitor Meira who is recovering from back problems from last weekend.

Anonymous said...

@cvt--glad to have you with us :)

The Loose Wheel said...

Vicky, heard that on SIRUS earlier in the week. Good opportunity for PT...be pretty cool if he won in a Foyt car I think...

Dot said...

Read that a McCumbee crew member failed the drug test.

Third caution already. This could be a long race.

@ cvt, I find it easier to not watch a race when KyB is leading. I want a repeat of the NW race.

Daly Planet Editor said...

big NO on the flashing lights on the split-screen.

Hotaru1787 said...

Came back to... SDDD leading? I might not listen for very long. Problem...hit the 51.

Vicky D said...

Haven't heard a word on David Starr yet. Too much on KB & Skinner.

Anonymous said...

Oh no Grampa :(

bryanh said...

Is there a free live leaderboard for the trucks? I think Trackpass has it, but not free.

Dot said...

Dang it. KHI not having a good weekend.

bevo said...

Man they really missed the Hornaday incident

Hotaru1787 said...

Those flashing lights are back? Yeah, they were in place during the qualifying session. Gave me a headache.

Ron is out.

Vicky D said...

I don't pay for leaderboard like the one on Nascar.com but not running for the truck race.

Dot said...

@ bevo, they'd rather show the underneath of Skinner's truck.

Who is Bainey?

cvt said...

bevo said...

Not a good start for the Speed crew today.

Dot said...

I wish they would change that pit road rule.

Fun fact about Miles the Monster. He actually holds a real life sized race car.

bryanh said...

Thanks Vicky, I use Nascar.com for cup, and Nationwide also.

Anonymous said...

@bryanh--there's not one that I know of the truckseries site use to but I think they only do quals now :(

bevo said...

Anyone see red in the stands yet? :)

Martin Vincent said...

@Gymmie - TruckSeries.com has never had a race leaderboard that I know of.

Karen said...

Been looking for Red myself, Bevo.

Vicky D said...

I wish Red had a sign to wave to us!!!

bryanh said...

Gymmie you are right about trucks.com, but thank you for the info.

Martin Vincent said...

Scott Wimmer ran well enough in the Nationwide Series race to put the #40 Key Motorsports team in the guaranteed positions for the Nashville race. He's on his way to the front in this race also.

Vicky D said...

Since SDDD had trouble in the NW race, Speed is making up for it and having a lovefest with him.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Wonder why those Wrecked promos are driving me nuts this season?

bevo said...

Think Fox will be so wrapped up with the Jr situation and Shrub that they don't notice the tire issue until everyone starts crashing tomorrow?

Martin Vincent said...

What a traffic jam behind Brian Ickler after he hit the wall. Chad McCumbee is lucky he didn't get rear-ended trying to avoid him.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Wow....could be tiregate tomorrow?

Dot said...

@ JD, I was thinking the same thing.

Is it the tire or the set up?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Straight from track: Kyle and Joey have spoken. Kyle not mad at Joey. Kyle was losing a RF tire which caused jam-up.

This from Gibbs PR folks.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Kind of interesting that ESPN did a very solid and straightforward race telecast and now SPEED is all about Kyle and flashing colored lights and missing the tire story.

Weird...

Martin Vincent said...

@Dot - Didn't see an answer to your question, Tim Bainey Jr. was a USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series driver who's making the move up to Trucks.

Anonymous said...

@JD - there is no -need- for the tiregate to happen. Alas, you are probably right - NASCAR will give (maybe) 1 extra set of tires for a much longer race at about 1/2 thru the race. The lack of attention to detail from NASCAR is a never ending amazement to me.

Martin Vincent said...

@JD - Funny that Fox, ESPN and Speed all seem to have on weeks and off weeks. It's almost as if the broadcast directors draw straws each week to determine who's going to work which race.

Dot said...

Thank you Martin V.

If only some channel would show other racing series instead of reality shows, these names might be familiar.
Or, if the booth guys would mention them. I'm sure it's a big deal for Bainey to be in a truck.

@ Martin V, funny comment to JD.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Jojaye,

Imagine being ESPN. They are set to spend over a hundred million dollars on the last seventeen Cup races...beginning with Indy.

Right now, the tire cannot get every to 20 laps. This is after the disaster of last season.

After the summer lull and the TNT six-pack, ESPN might wind-up beginning their coverage with another nightmare.

Not too sure that the Cup guys would settle for ORP next door, but at least their tires would last.

JD

darbar said...

I know this is for the Truck race but did anyone here see the post race interviews from the Nationwide race? The reason I'm asking is because I was listening to Nascar on Sirius and Clare B Lang made references to some pretty nasty commets made by Kyle Busch. And then the callers were in a tizzy about the same thing. Clare even went so far as to refer to Brad K as the anti-Christ because of comments made by Busch.

Daly Planet Editor said...

MV, I am trying to get a confirmation of who is at the controls. The SPEED Truck producer put those flashing lights on the shelf earlier this season.

bevo said...

The continuing tire problems do raise an interesting point that I wish someone would talk about. Both NASCAR and F1 have made giant changes in their cars the past two years. Bridgestone hasn't had one problem in F1 even though those tires have much more stress put on them.

Martin Vincent said...

@Dot - Tim was slow in qualifying, it's a good thing 4 trucks withdrew since the preliminary entry list came out or he might not have made the race. Mike Bliss would have taken the champion's provisional if the #40 Key Motorsports truck had come to Dover.

Vicky D said...

Darbar what could BK do? We don't have that radio so had to watch the broadcast and Joey seemed upset with what happened. Good job Todd, but he'll lose a lap or two.

Martin Vincent said...

There goes Todd's left rear. This is bad!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Remember, Kyle found out that he had been replaced when he was testing with his Hendrick team.

It wasn't Hendrick who told him, it was a reporter.

Not too strange that he has taken some swings at the person who replaced him (and his business interests) and tried to win every race to show Hendrick what he lost.

Unfortunately, his personality makes it a double whammy. Fun to watch, however.

Dot said...

Poor Todd. Which would NASCAR prefer, driver getting to pit road safely or go around and bring out a caution?

cvt said...

Goodyear will pay IMS to pave the track after next Wednesday.

Daly Planet Editor said...

I agree, they should have waived that penalty.

Anonymous said...

@JD - This tire fiasco is unbelievable, and is a blame NASCAR for real. Goodyear wanted/advised a slightly larger, wider tire & NASCAR nixed it. Who would you go to for tire recommend - NASCAR or Goodyear. I'd listen to Goodyear.

ESPN will really go nuts if tires pt.2 happens again.
ORP would make more sense or move the race to Kentucky. Not to far away, & stock cars can run there. Indy is really a F1/Indy car track.

Anonymous said...

Michael Waltrip continues to kiss NASCAR, Good Year, and Aaron's behind as usual. Yes, the tires that are falling to pieces are not the right rear, so the track and rubber issues are supposedly not responsible, but the fact we are having so many other tire failures? It can't be running over debris, so what is it?

Daly Planet Editor said...

cvt,

Should be interesting to see what Despain and Miller have to say about the IMS issue on Wind Tunnel.

Something has to be changed because they cannot afford to lose the Brickyard race.

Now that Tony is not the guy in charge things might happen that make sense.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Wonder what the conversation is right now inside the Sprint Cup Series trailer in the infield?

bevo said...

Punctures are to be expected at Dover, a lot of the debris goes down to the bottom into the racing line. The wear is a whole different issue.

Anonymous said...

@bevo - Maybe because F1 lets the tire experts be tire experts & not micro manage like NASCAR does to Goodyear?
IMHO, I could be wrong.

Anonymous said...

@Dot--I know I hate that rule. I'd rather them be able to stop safely and get down then go around and bring out a caution because their tire blew a few feet later and now they have both a tire to replace and a fender

bevo said...

Firestone doesn't have a problem at Indy...

@Jojaye- I think they learned their lesson with Michelin :)

Anonymous said...

@Anon 712 - Mikey is a slow second in the kissing dept. to Mark Martin who did a much slicker job on Trackside last night.

Made MW look like a disgruntled old man!

Anonymous said...

@bevo - which proves F1 teachable because they pay attention.

NASCAR - not so much LOL

Dot said...

Is Hornaday back out?

Glenn said...

Has anyone heard Max Papis mentioned?
Do we know how many trucks are still in the race?

darbar said...

OK, I'll admit I'm tire-disabled. What is it about the tracks that destroy the tires? I've not paid attention, but are all race track paved in concrete or are some blacktop? I read that the track at Indy is grooved, is that right? So, if that's the case, and it's those grooves that rip up the Nascar tires, why don't the open wheel cars have tire issues? Is it because those cars are so much lighter? Please assist a dummy

Vicky D said...

Glenn that's the problem with not having a live leaderboard it's really hard to me to keep up with the field summary scroll. The booth should be doing more updates for us.

Hotaru1787 said...

*yawn* and grrr... SDDD is STILL ruining my Saturday.

Cut a tire Kylie!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Bummed Max missed the Cup race.

Martin Vincent said...

Intervals were last given at lap 111, 23 trucks were running, all others were out except for T.J. Bell and Ron Hornaday Jr. who were listed as Off.

Vicky D said...

And also, Glenn, have they mentioned Setzer and he's in the top 10!

Hotaru1787 said...

JB thinks he got a tire down... at least under caution.

Why Johnny and not SDDD?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Rick Allen said the fans are getting a show today?

Is this Bizarro World? Did the ESPN and SPEED teams switch personalities?

What a weird Saturday.

Anonymous said...

Oh look...another flat tire.

cvt said...

If they don't have a tire compound at the test Monday-Tuesday that'll run a fuel stop,Goodyear will have exhausted its options after Wednesday.

SallyB said...

Well, if we have another tire fiasco tomorrow, maybe it will take the spotlight off the Jr./ crewchief change. I'm as sick of hearing about it as Junior must be.

Glenn said...

I guess I was asking if we have had an update on current drivers or the drivers that are out of the race from the booth?

Anonymous said...

LOL. The triple pits failed. 2 shots of the 13 of Johnny Sauter. uhoh.

Vicky D said...

Who wants to see 2 shots of Johnny Sauter's car!

Anonymous said...

@darbar - yes there are grooves cut into the racing surface at Indy. I don't get the entire explanation, but Hubby says its due to the fact open wheels are so much lighter & the tires aren't under the car per se. It helps the cars stay on the track.

bevo said...

Something is wrong with the Speed crew today, usually the best coverage by a mile.

@darbar- You got an hour to kill about the tires? :)

Martin Vincent said...

Scoring error on Benson? His crew chief says they shouldn't be a lap down.

Anonymous said...

At 7:39 with 58 laps left, will darkness be a problem?

Daly Planet Editor said...

MV, no way. He literally got lapped by the field when changing his tires. If he had gone through the pits and rejoined the tail of the field he would be OK.

Nice try by his crew chief though and he kept a straight face!

Dot said...

JB the LD.

Daly Planet Editor said...

can someone get the official sundown time for Dover from a weather website?

Anonymous said...

sundown at 8:30

Martin Vincent said...

@JD - Must have missed that, I'm multitasking, watching, blogging and eating.

Sophia said...

been busy vacuuming and cleaning carpets (using Host dry clean method, low chemicals, safe for pets, etc)

Just read the posts here...glad I am not paying lots of attention since it seems the SPEED team is not on it's game. Bizarro world for sure.

Dot said...

@ JD, 8:21 pm.

bevo said...

Dover sunset 8:21 Eastern

Anonymous said...

TWC says 8:21 pm for sunset

Daly Planet Editor said...

Thanks for the sundown info. TV is no doubt cranking the iris of the cameras nice and wide to give as much light as possible.

MV, SPEED did not show it at all. Like the guys have been saying, this TV gang is off-balance today.

Dot said...

Don't the camera lights light up the track?

Are there no lights at all there? Even in the parking lot?

Martin Vincent said...

Update on rundown, 24 trucks running, 19 of which are on the lead lap. Hornaday still Off.

What happened to Scott Wimmer? He's 8 laps down.

bevo said...

Adam needs to project his voice better, tough to hear him.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Dot, there are no lights on TV cameras like this that shoot events.

You may be thinking of the little lights on the news cameras your local TV station uses.

Dover is a horse racing track and a casino. There are no lights to run events at night and no plans to install any.

Glenn said...

I do "feel" Ray and Adam give the most useful pit road info. I think they're pretty good.
It does sound like the last 10 laps or so laps could get ugly, with so many not planning to pit anymore.

Anonymous said...

@Dot hotel on 1 side of track grandstands and all block the lights from outside the track. Dover has no track lighting. Its already got some serious shadows/shade by the sky tunnel or whatever its called.

bevo said...

@Dot- I guess they could line the track with all of the slot machines and a bunch of extension cords :)

Daly Planet Editor said...

Do you guys remember when Robby Gordon had a car fire at Watkins Glen and it turned out to be the in-car camera power box?

I wonder if that truck series driver who had smoke billowing from his passenger window had the same problem?

Dot said...

@ JD, I remember seeing a race and the track was illuminated but all around it wasn't. Don't remember what one. That's what I was talking about.

Glenn said...

That's one way for Max to get some tv time.

Dot said...

Very funny guys.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Wasn't that with Sauter? The same one who put Skinner in the grass at the last race?

bevo said...

JD,

Wasn't that back in 2000 or so?

Vicky D said...

JD - and into the wall on his side after the slide in the grass!

Martin Vincent said...

In-truck camera still working on Buescher.

Wasn't Robby Gordon in the lead at Watkins Glen when that happened to him?

Dot said...

I'm feeling a GWC.

Vicky D said...

There's our David Starr!

Martin Vincent said...

All of the track but the frontstretch is in the shade.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Yep, he was fighting for the lead and it was before this new TV contract, so probably at least five years ago.

Daly Planet Editor said...

This is a freaking PR disaster.

Martin Vincent said...

It was 2001, out with a status of "Electrical".

http://www.motorsportsone.com/2001-r22.htm

Vicky D said...

OH no SDDD has a problem - too bad!

Dot said...

Not to be negative.........hee hee.

bevo said...

Kind of looks like Kyle tried his best to bring out a yellow

Hotaru1787 said...

Yes! SDDD had that problem I wanted.

Oh no, Colin too! :(

Anonymous said...

Kyle has a flat tire & hits the wall! Braun has a flat tire in 2nd too! Now David Starr might have a flat tire. Is there a tire failure button in the control booth? Good Year fails again.

Martin Vincent said...

It's going to be an interesting 12 or 13 laps...

Daly Planet Editor said...

hot, tone that down a bit my friend. We can root for our favs, but we don't play the hate game.

Kyle is the story in this race just as he was in the Nationwide Series race.

It is just a shame that this is telecast got way off track. No pun intended.

bevo said...

Poor red is probably covered in tire dust by now :)

Martin Vincent said...

Kyle must be fuming, seeing all those service trucks on the track. He's going to call for a red flag.

darbar said...

bevo, sure I have an hour about tires. Just waiting for my Penguins to start and hopefully take one of the two at the Joe

Daly Planet Editor said...

Isn't the bigger issue that this is the Cup tire for tomorrow?

Anonymous said...

Shame for Colin - 2 fer 2 for Shrubby, maybe he can blame someone for this too.

Goodyear is really not having a good day. The Sprint hauler meeting is now passing out jars of tums.

Could these tv peopel quit slurping Kyles koolaid please.

Glenn said...

Goodyear is taking a beating. I'm sure they try really hard, but this is bad.
Knowing all the testing that has been done at Indy this doesn't look to good.
I hate it most for all the in car test "dummies". These guys have to be tired of hitting the wall.

Hotaru1787 said...

Sorry, I just am sick of SDDD. Colin blew a tire too, so it balances out.

I'll try to tone down the whining.

Hotaru1787 said...

jojaye- That's a new brand of koolaid.

I've heard of Kiwi koolaid (from a few Scott Dixon fans I've come across)

Anonymous said...

should read people - lol even w/spell check my spelling is bad lol

Vicky D said...

At the beginning of this race, I was telling my hubby that this race will be fast and we can go to dinner afterward. Gee we're starving and there's still 10 or so laps left.

Glenn said...

Does the NASCAR.com commercial get anyone to the website?
Not me.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Man, I am really freaked out that Rick Allen is ducking the tire issue. Really changes my perspective on him.

SPEED is getting good at avoiding the obvious.

darbar said...

Is the COT part of the tire problem or is it just the bad tires? At times I swear it's more like bumper cars than race cars/trucks. If these are the same tires for tomorrow, you're going to have a lot of very unhappy drivers tomorrow

bevo said...

JD,

Bigger issue, yes. For this broadcast? No. We always complain on the Truck and NW races when so much attention is paid to Cup instead of the race at hand.

Anonymous said...

@hot - the Kyle koolaid is from DW and given generously only to media members I think

Hotaru1787 said...

Not me.

Though I barely get on there except as a 'last resort' for reasearch.

Martin Vincent said...

NASCAR.com wouldn't blow away feathers, it's so slow to load...

Daly Planet Editor said...

That website is a disaster. No Nationwide or Truck or regional info. Just embarrassing.

Dot said...

Could a truck regular win?

Hotaru1787 said...

I think that's the way it is with most of the mainstream sports media... Sprint Cup over everything else in racing (except in rare cases).

Anonymous said...

Vicky D - Already went to dinner. Got home about 10 laps before SDDD cut down tire. Beautiful!

bozo said...

can you imagine if they both blow up on the last lap.. they may be missing that the tires cooled down during the caution

darbar said...

Don't you love it when a full time truck racer wins, especially a newbie? I love it !!!

Hotaru1787 said...

All right Brian! Two good winners today!

Let's hope the Magic make it 3! :)

bevo said...

@darbar- the problem is Trucks and NW haven't changed like Cup with the COT. They want similar compounds so the rubber laid down on a weekend is the same - hence the complaints from the Trucks on IRL weekends.

Most tracks are asphalt, this one is concrete. Rubber adheres to asphalt easier than concrete.

Anonymous said...

I thought nascar.com was only videos and selling stuff. They have news stories?

Anonymous said...

Congrats to Brian Scott & his crew & fans! Sweet he wants to do a burnout on those tires!

Dot said...

Yes, he can.

Vicky D said...

Good going Brian Scott nice win! Miss David Starr winning but he was a close 3rd.

Daly Planet Editor said...

There will be a new column up about Saturday stuff shortly.

Thanks for hanging with us all day long. Should be interesting to see how things pan out for tomorrow.
