Live Blogging The Sprint Cup Series From Dover On Fox

This final Sprint Cup Series race on Fox has suddenly emerged as one with multiple storylines underway. There has to be a mix of apprehension and excitement at the TV crew prepares for four hours at Dover.

NASCAR's Ramsey Poston announced that the decision had already been made to stop the race at lap 30 and check the tires. Saturday, the CWTS event turned into a disaster for Goodyear and NASCAR with right side tires blowing before a full fuel run was complete. Added to that problem were the current rules of choosing either fuel or tires on each pit stop in the truck series.

There was another major rainstorm on Saturday night at the track was scrubbed clean of the small amount of rubber put down by the Nationwide and CWTS events. Dover is a concrete track and the fear is that the COT will scrub the rubber off the right side tire very quickly on this abrasive surface.

Added to this mix is the continuing Dale Earnhart Jr. story. Lance McGrew was supposed to be starting in his role next week, but since Brad Keselowski did not make the Cup race, McGrew will be on Junior's pit box this Sunday along with multiple Hendrick Racing veterans.

Kyle Busch dominated both the Nationwide and CWTS races on Saturday and didn't win either one. Fox continues to focus on Busch and it should be interesting to see how DW handles this issue on the final race for the network of the season.

Dover makes good pictures, especially from the low level speed shots. Those are the cameras that do not move and let the cars fly by with great audio. Remember, Dover has two bridges over the track at each end of the backstretch. One mandatory TV element is to eliminate these two structures from the telecast.

The only times that the two bridges will be seen are from the aerial shot and also when a driver's in-car camera is being used. Look carefully on the shots from the roof, out the front window and out of the rear of the car to see the bridges fly by.

Digger's last day should be interesting. Recently, the animated character has been pulled back a bit after fans made it clear they had reached the breaking point. That is perhaps the biggest issue, how to judge just how much of something like this is enough. Look for the final cartoon, the animation over restarts and the still shot of Digger on the low-level cameras.

This TV team is the most experienced of all the NASCAR TV partners. Chris Myers will lead Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Hammond onto the air from the Hollywood Hotel at 1:30PM for the pre-race show. This should set the tone for how Fox is going to approach the race today.

Larry McReynolds posted on Twitter that the theme of the race today for the NASCAR on Fox team was going to be having fun. That may be tough with tire problems, Junior stories and Kyle Busch on a rampage. Add to that a couple of hard crashes and Dover may become exactly what is almost always is, a big grind for all concerned.

Mike Joy, McReynolds and Waltrip should be on the air around 2PM and the green flag flies fifteen minutes later. Krista Voda, Steve Byrnes, Matt Yocum and Dick Berggren will handle pit road. This is the cream of the crop where TV pit reporters are concerned and this race will certainly keep them busy.

This post will serve to host your comments about the Sprint Cup Series from Dover on Fox. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting.

Andrew, thats been the MO on Tony all year. They don't say a word all race as he slowly moves up through the field, but with about 50-60 to go when he is in the top 5 they act surprised.

LOL the S&P race might be the most interesting one out there...

Vicky D said...

And is Vickers really a lap down already?

Dot said...

JD, why do the cameras dodge the bridges? We could still see cars racing.

Erik said...

My view of start and park owners are no different than oil speculators. They may not be doing anything against the rules, but they can screw over everyone else.

red said...

ya know what would interesting, jd? getting some feedback from marty smith about watching a race at home on the tv. heck, there's still what? 300 laps? get him on TDP with us! bet he's learning a ton about why nascar ratings are down . . .

Sophia said...

I was going to turn on MRN, apparently today station is coming in ok..but now lawn is getting cut and I need close captioning on tv.

I see myself tuning into the IRL soon on the second tv (besides the NASCAR race) and note the better broadcast. But it is ABC today also known for ONE CAR FINISH ...so Fox musta learned that from them.

I hate when a big track looks like Bristol due to excess in car/bumper cam/driver cam.

ok, suggestion for fox for next season: ALL pit stops should feature 3 windows and stay with an entire stop. pick your choices carefully and intelligently.

also, live action should always take a larger box than a replay.

hmmmm. wonder if we know anyone who could tweet him about that idea? hmmmmmm.

stricklinfan82 said...

And now the 87 came back on track to run a couple laps and pass the 66 back, and then went right back to the garage.

TV could really make a mockery of this situation if they wanted to and instantly raise the level of public outcry against this ridiculous start-and-park dance, and probably force NASCAR to get rid of it altogether.

If you believe the behind-the-scenes talk, the TV networks stand to gain financially if the start-and-park was done away with and fields occasionally ended up a car or two short of 43, so I wonder why they don't choose to speak up against it.

Martin Vincent said...

@bevo - I wonder if NASCAR told the 66 and 87 to stop trying to outdo one another by a lap. We know the reason they're out is bogus anyway.

Did we see John A hit the wall before the replay? I was in the kitchen.

again, as someone noted yesterday: at dover, debris *tends* to silde down the banking pretty fast. usually, what hangs around up top is rubber but debris really heads down to that bottom line.

bevo said...

Officials trying to get the 33 behind the 77 before they will open pit road

stricklinfan82 said...

I commend NASCAR for throwing that debris caution flag in the middle of green flag stops. Yes it really screws up the standings, BUT if we are to believe NASCAR only throws debris cautions when there is an immediate threat to driver safety than there should be no wiggle room to wait until after the round of stops is finished to throw the yellow. If debris isn't dangerous enough to bring out the yellow at an inconvenient time than it should never bring out a yellow at any time, period.

PammH said...

Do we have any idea why pit rd was closed sooo long?

red said...

@pammmmmm: i noticed that at the race yesterday as well. alli can add is that the trucks made a complete round of the track each time a yellow came out, regardless of where the debris was spotted or where an incident occured.

Martin Vincent said...

Could be up to 9 cars at the tail end of the lead lap on that restart.

9, 16, 00, 2, 1, 26 probably will be ahead of the leader.

Andrew said...

@strick - I agree with you, but I don't think we ever saw that debris. I could be wrong.

@PammH - Apparently someone didn't want to get back in line.

JR 7th???

shhhhh. we're trying to maintain a low profile and give the guy a break. in fact, mike davis just tweeted:
"Hesitant to type this for fear of prematurely raising people's hopes, but we were faster than Jimmie on that last run. He's the leader."

stricklinfan82 said...

Cue the chaos that ensues when NASCAR allows a bunch of tail end of the lead lap cars to restart in front of the leader.

I don't agree with DW's wave around desire, because every lapped car would stay out on every caution and steal laps. I just wish this rule would change to move those cars to the inside line and allow the leader to always be the first car on the outside line.

If you're on the tail end of one lap down between the pace car and the leader you have to restart on the inside. Just make the tail end of the lead lap cars do the same thing.

stricklinfan82 said...

This approach to yellow flag pit stop coverage is tough to watch. I just don't see the logic behind saying "Why let the viewers see 3 pit stops in their entirety when we can show them small pieces of each of them, one after another, instead?"

This approach clearly lets the viewers see less than the other NASCAR production trucks do, so this is not a positive innovation.

Not just ESPN, but how about Speed and TNT as well JD? Shouldn't a production truck's goal be to give the viewers the best coverage possible? I'm all for innovations that give the viewers more, like this same truck's green flag pit stop / on-track leader split screen. But why do something worse than everyone else, in a manner that gives the viewers less, just to be different... as you are speculating is the reasoning? It just doesn't make sense to me.

An easy fix for start and park.Base their payout on laps run. Like 40th pays $65,000 and the race is scheduled for 400 laps. The team has no pit crew or tires and goes out early gets paid according to laps run. He's out at 50 laps he gets 1/8th pay. Show a blown motor or crash you get paid in full.

What was left somewhat unsaid, but seemed to run under that report on Smith and the #78 - was that the alternative to only showing up when you are ready to race is to "start and park."

The 78 car gets engines from Hendrick motorsports, so they conceivably could qualify on time whenever they pleased and collect the check following a "handling" failure.

Does the name James Finch ring a bell. Not the Hendrick part, but certainly the "race when you're prepared and start-and-park when you're not". I kinda hoped that would change after the huge Talladega win but obviously that wasn't meant to be.

I can just picture that communication now:

"What the hell is this Steve?!"

"you said you wanted the shock Denny had...well...thats it. Strap that baby in and dig!"

Why does Fox this year hate wide shots that show more than 1 or 2 cars? Dover is great place for wide shots esp. coming out from bridge area?

~~~
been my main gripe all freaking season. Think FOX will answer on Twitter? not bloody likely
Internet is slow and I am getting lots of "negotiating the connection" messages on Twitter.
Guess the FAIL WHALE sign is used up?
@david: no HD for this luddite. so that can't be the solution . . .
Tracy D said...
So right, Bugs Bunny and I are not acquainted. Grew up overseas, didn't have TV.
I dunno, DW, looks to me like the 78 is holding up TWO cars.
Sophia said...
See we saw Digger when they said Martin was UP HIGH on the race track. Thanks for paying attention Mr. Joy.
Digger time to take a permanent nap.
The Loose Wheel said...
Well im with ya red...so im wondering if its just part of the SD package. Dont know any people with HD complaining of it.
I dont notice it on ESPN...but ill listen more closely next week for it.
KB really does pay way to much attention to Jr. When he had his meltdown he sounded like he had taken lessons. Now to add insult to his injured ego - he got the lucky dog!
@ dear Sophia, red & dmo, Our ages are showing. I know what a maroon means.
red said...
@tracy: you must be kidding! bugs is classic cartoon sarcasm. you absolutely MUST get your hands on a dvd of anything you can. i guarnatee you'll enjoy it!
Martin Vincent said...
John Andretti is back out, must be trying to protect that guaranteed starting position even though Scott Speed is closest to him and out of the race.
The swooshing has been in the audio for years. I've heard it. It is nothing new.
Thanks folks for the clarification on "Maroon" vs moron.
I do know the difference and can spell. :-0
I can hear Bug's voice in my mind. Appreciate the explanation trouble accessing twitter to get info
attention fox production truck: i am a fan of the 88 team but please: duct tape the booth's collective mouth right now! i do not want to hear anymore about this team and all the new -- and equalyy unrealistic! -- expectations of this team.
zip it, pinheads!
Good point by Joy about the first date for JR and Lance. Time will tell.
Hey, Fox has all the tools in place. ESPN makes changes every two years as a rule and changes the entire network logo every five.
Couple of changes and Fox will be fine. I think those changes might be happening for 2010.
You all know my opinion, Krista in the Hollywood Hotel and Wendy on pit road would change the broadcasts.
JD, I think the on-air personnel is fine in its current structure, though I agree Wendy Venturini should be added to the mix. In my opinion they just need behind-the-scenes leadership to take the shackles off Chris Myers and let him act serious, use Digger like Cletus the Fox NFL robot and not be an invasive part of the coverage, and get rid of these ineffective production truck innovations that give the viewers less instead of more (namely the yellow flag pit stop coverage and the finish line blur cam).
Good FOX, show JJ all by himself while interviewing Hamlin.
That engine problem for Mikey better be just him.
bozo said...
with JR they are missing the point that in the past he was starting ok, but loss ground as the race went on, hence why everyone thought tony jr. had to go, he couldn't keep up with the track during a race.
agreed but i still don't know where it's coming from. just curiosity on my part today.
Anonymous said...
@Dmo do not bother - Fox will not comply w/fans wishes.
Daly Planet Editor said...
stricklinfan, the only problem with that is Myers is not a NASCAR fan and Voda knows everyone.
Dot said...
How come FOX can show a TNT racing comml, but not BSPNs?
Waltrip is out with a blown engine.
55 out engine - leaking oil on floor
Biff's truck ride would have been perfect for RD.
@Red, my cultural references often have huge holes, LOL. And every now and then, I simply don't know an English word for something I want to say. Don't get me started on my problems with idioms. I mangle them constantly, and I've been back in the States for ages now.
I turned the sound on the TV off. What's up with the 55 engine?
Tracy D said...
Ah I see, blown engines. Thanks.
it's junk. ironically enough, we could hear it on the tv! he blew a hole in the engine and is leaking oil on the floor of the garage.
Dot said...
All that booth excitement for debris? I thought there was a big wreck.
Sophia said...
Tracy
Remind me not to use any references from "Green Acres"(Monroe brothers, Mr. Haney truck) or "Beverly Hillbillies" (Elly May Clampett or Jethro Bodine comments) in your direction!
You are at a severe disadvantage ;-0
How about Seinfeld? Not that there's anything wrong with it.
ok, just asked room mate to tape the IRl. I can't do it today. two tvs, blogging and twitter.
somethings gotta give (a movie and a Seinfeld line...a twofer)
bevo said...
How about this for telemetry?
On IRL Race Control Danica Patrick is doing 234,777 mph.
As they used to say on SportsCenter "that would be a record" :)
Love that Bud commercial no matter how many times I see it.
No offense Tracy but where in the world could you have grown up and not had TV or have heard of Bugs Bunny?
Daly Planet Editor said...
Wonder if MW will step aside and get Truex in that seat next season?
Been a very tough year for that car.
Dot said...
@ bevo, and she wants to leave the IRL?
