Live Blogging The Sprint Cup Series Race From Richmond On Fox

The umbrellas came out around 5:30PM just as the track was beginning to dry from an earlier shower. The weather radar is showing a group of storms over Richmond, but there is a break in the weather after that line.

The NASCAR on Fox team may be facing a very long night of racing and possibly a delay in the event until Monday.

Chris Myers is up first from the Hollywood Hotel at 7PM. He will be joined by Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Hammond. Look for Talladega aftermath, weather forecasts and a review of the Kyle vs. Junior scenario from last season.

Waltrip moves up and joins Mike Joy and Larry McReynolds if and when the race begins. Joy did monster duty for SPEED on Friday and has to be commended for his performance.

Luckily, Fox has the best crew of pit reporters on TV and hopefully access to the drivers will continue to be available. Slightly before 6PM, NASCAR moved all the cars from the grid to the garage area and put them under cover.

This post will serve to host your comments about the NASCAR on Fox telecast of the Sprint Cup Series on Fox. To add your TV-related comment, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting.

Thanks for taking some time out of your life to stop by The Daly Planet.

With the forecast calling for rain until about Tuesday, one way or another they're getting to halfway tonight.

NorCalFan said...

Listening to the 24s radio feed. Says he can't see his pit sign from the track. lol

alex said...

Middle of the 9th Inning. The Braves have to bat before FOX can pick up the race.

Dot said...

Does BV get credit for leading the first lap?

Hotaru1787 said...

Slow... but going.

Haven't really gotten an update on weather conditions, so I don't know if anything's on the way over there.

Anonymous said...

Yes, vickers gets credit. laps are counting as if it were a normal caution now.

Haus14 said...

I don't think Speed will dump the race for AMA. The AMA race is from 4/26.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Once they turn them loose, it is going to be a sprint to halfway for sure.

Mike said...

If they go to full green flag within a minute or 2 after the Braves-Astros game gets over, it's obvious of what was going on.

alex said...

@ Dot,

Yes, BV has led the first 4 laps so far.

Newracefan said...

Dot Yes leading lap under caution counts, so this should too

Sophia said...

are they really drying the track or also waiting for all baseball to be over! ? :)

got my cookie dough mixed up to bake later or in rain delay.

Had a second batch of coffee about 4pm (RARE for me but tired) Now thinking a bad idea so having glass of wine to cut down on rants-er critisms.

Vicky D said...

Surely they aren't going to show "points as of now" under yellow. Glad Astros are ahead too they are having a terrible year!

Dot said...

Ask and they answer. Yes, he does.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Well, things worked out pretty well for both Fox and NASCAR.

Race green at 8PM, SPEED covered the baseball over-run and the weather cleared. Nice deal.

Geesh DW. Nice job changing the subject away from our short tracks to your brother.

Green on SPEED for me.

Anonymous said...

@Dot--Mike just answered your question...yes he does :). Thanks anon 7:57 I thought that's how it worked but I couldn't remember since we rarely start out this way

Love it over 200 comments before the race has begun...we rule!

Anonymous said...

SPEED is sticking with the race. the motorcycle race you have to watch out for is at 10EST.

Sophia said...

ok..appreciated DW's words after BBB!

:)

alex said...

In Atlanta SPEED has pre-empted the motorcycle race.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Hanging with NASCAR on SPEED. No crawl or explanation for AMA fans.

Hotaru1787 said...

We weren't mired in full speed racing, so lots of comms.

Newracefan said...

Guess the 66 can park it now

Sophia said...

Blaney has the worst luck this season..what is the deal.sigh

Daly Planet Editor said...

That's one way to start and park!

Haus14 said...

awww a start and park wrecked.

Anonymous said...

Darn! Caution already! Poor Blaney :(

Anonymous said...

JD, the AMA race on SPEED right now should be a re-run, however I think there is a another race at 10EST.

Hotaru1787 said...

Start-WRECK-and park (maybe?)

Newracefan said...

Soph what did DW say I couldn't tell

Anonymous said...

Karma for the #66. They barely have damage and they are calling Dave to the garage. Pathetic!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Poor AMA fans are clueless right about now...what? NASCAR on Fox?

Dot said...

@ Gymmie, yeah, I wasn't sure either. Thanks to those who answered.

Hey look, it's the king.

HaHaHa same thing I was thinking!

red said...

nrf: pit box told blaney to take it to the truck -- already. guess the resources aren't there to attempt to pound it out and fix it.

Anonymous said...

So much for the "must carry green flag" rule. Though, this is how it should have been done anyway. They learned their lesson from last year.

Haus14 said...

square butts commercial count...1

Glenn said...

Still got baseball here in ATL.
If they switch mid sentence from Speed to Fox I'm gonna be P****.
Wow, we missed the first green flag laps, so much for contracts.

alex said...

JD,
Is the SPEED simulcast nationwide, or can it be switched back in certain markets that have the race on FOX?

Hotaru1787 said...

haus20- Keeping track on that, I see.

Karen said...

BBB. Lord, please don't let it rain any more is what DW said.

Anonymous said...

red- They have the resources, they just lack the effort. This is the same MSRP #90/91 Nationwide team that has parked in every race they ran.

Dot said...

Re: Blaney, at least they can take it back to the shop and S&P next week.

Hotaru1787 said...

I would asume NW... we've got both channels playing the race... I just checked

Anonymous said...

SPEED will have the same programing Nationwide since it is not distributed through local stations.

DW said something about Please don't rain anymore..or somethin' like that. :)

Dot said...

How hard is it to pass 2 rookies? Good grief. SDDD already.

alex said...

The Braves game is over. Not sure how quickly they will make the switch. After commercials at least.

Anonymous said...

that is an abomination for race fans in ATL, a complete violation of the NASCAR contract.

Good sign- getting info from the pits tonight

Newracefan said...

Bevo I was thinking the same thing hopefully it's not a fluke and they keep going further down the field

alex said...

The braves game ended 13 laps ago and FOX has shown commercials the entire time.

Dot said...

@ Alex, interesting. JD, does this mean fewer later?

Daly Planet Editor said...

alex,

all the local spots they missed in the NASCAR timeslot no doubt.

The braves game ended 13 laps ago and FOX has shown commercials the entire time.

well, that's enough to make you plotz right there!

alex said...

Once the Braves game ended, I got a good 6-7 minutes of commercials before race coverage.

Fox in Atlanta picked up the race on lap 43 (though baseball ended around lap 25).

The end of the baseball local commercial break ended during the simulcast commercials, and until the commercials were synced up on the two feeds, I got a blue screen with this message:

Attention stations: This is the first local break of the COMBO LOCAL.

Why it takes FOX 20 laps to switch to the original programming is beyond me.

Dot said...

Prediction: very few cars on the lead lap soon.

Newracefan said...

Note to FOX we can't see the battle between JJ and Kevin if you keep showing the car camera!

alex said...

I had typed that last comment waiting for commercials to end... It wasn't 6-7 like I said, more like 10 minutes.

SPEED back to original programming.

red said...

nice gesture, thanking speed for carrying the race while the baseball games were on.

Daly Planet Editor said...

There ya go, off go the SPEED folks to....what? celebrity race???

Dot said...

SPEED now showing the LB celebrity race.

Anonymous said...

wow! that's interesting Alex! :(

Anonymous said...

SPEED dropped in the Celebrity race with no warning Although it was at the same time FOX went to commercial.

Glenn said...

Good switch here in ATL

Charlie said...

Thanks Alex and Vicky D for keeping us updated on the Atlanta game and the Fox telecast.

Good Job!!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Did the Supercross Lites in Utah get rained out?

Sophia said...

I MISSED any warning..speed here in Cincy just promoted Jamie Little winning some car race from last year..so that's coming on now.

Anonymous said...

JD, like I said, the Motorbike race that was supposed to air now is not very important because its is a re-run. I beleive there is a live motorcycle race at 10EST however.

kbaskins said...

This is stupid. Between reading 260+ comments here, following Twitter (for the first time), listening to my driver's radio and checking the TrackPass leader board, I haven't watched a complete lap of the race.

Who needs TV? :-)

--KarenB

Vicky D said...

Alex here in Houston after the game was over also so many commercials about 6/7 minutes as you said. Now more commercials it's hard to catch up what's going on.

Anonymous said...

JD, motorcycle race was not live.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Wow, does it get any more blatant than that?

red said...

here's hoping someone will keep us informed as to what happened with the riggs car . . .

Sophia said...

@KarenB

I hear ya about who needs tv?

:)

NorCalFan said...

Daly Planet Editor said...

anon 8:19PM,

It was listed as an original air in the Supercross series. Do you have other info?

Newracefan said...

NAPA sponsor a through the filed will you this sucks!

SonicAD said...

Yeah the live AMA Supercross race isn't until 10, though they have taped coverage of a road race at 9. Right now is a tape delay of last week's, shouldn't be an issue.

red said...

aaarrgghhh! isn't this crap what the pre-race is for? i REALLY don't want to be watching green flag racing thru the 55's windshield while drivers talk about how to brake at richmond.

i detest this!

im sorry, 'it'?

jane said...

Is it just me or does it feel like we're watching commercials with racing in between? And then there was just that napa break thing that apparently required split screens.

Dot said...

@ red, Ditto.

bevo said...

Too many useless in-car shots. Show the racing.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Karen,

Pretty soon you will be able to put your computer window, TV and any other applications on a big-screen and only have one source for info.

Whoever comes up with a good one is going to make millions.

Anonymous said...

yes, my information is not calling it an original airing.

Dot said...

Bumper cam? Wouldn't an outside shot have given us a better perspective? 77/26.

Unknown said...

Fox Where Bumper Cams Are King!

JD,

DirecTV listing shows Speed with a rerun of a bike race

Sophia said...

@jane

Yes it's all commercial all the time.

I know NASCAR needs to pay the bill but the PRODUCT PLACEMENT is getting out of hand and FORCING SPLIT SCREENS/in car cams and bumper cams. SHEESH.

Do they sponsor each batter in baseball...or each OUT in baseball. Mercy.

Anonymous said...

I'll take plate racing at Talladega rather than this snooze-fest at Richmond any day.

red said...

can this fan hope for some shots of glowing rotors as the evening gets darker? that's always been one of the best parts of short track night racing.

Anonymous said...

well there is a difference. You have you bumper cams, and you have your roof cams. I see FOX using the Roof cams more often which I like and think they are tolerable in a positional orientation sense.

Unknown said...

Wow 20 or so switches of nothing but roof, incar, and bumper cam shots. Thats just sad.

I guess they really are the king of bumper cams (and digger TM) :)

Dot said...

JD, funny you should mention that. I was thinking that if someone could set up cameras around the track and let us (via computer) choose our own shots anytime we want. If you want to follow your guy, you can. Pit stops? the ones you want.

darbar said...

Nascar needs their own network. Maybe they can show a race rather than commercials between 4 laps of racing.

Newracefan said...

Dot I believe that is called Racebuddy

Sophia said...

And NASCAR WONDERS why RATINGS ARE DOWN?

We never see the race.

Only the "director's cut" of toys HE wants us to see..and that totally STINKS.

Stinks, I tell ya.

red said...

word from mrn is riggs has possible "electrical issues."

Mark said...

But Racebuddy only comes with TNT

Anonymous said...

Why doesn't Fox use the full 16:9 display when they go to their 2-box screen? If people with old TVs can't see everything, too bad, so sad.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Thanks for the info. So, the 10PM race is live and the Utah race was rained out so we get celebrity cars instead of cycles. Hmm...

Anonymous said...

Anybody have the weather radar up?

Anonymous said...

Wow -I can't believe under 100 laps & +300 comments. I wish I was working - between MRN & Twitter I got better coverage than tonight with tv. I just fired up old computer w/new HD screen for Fox tracker.

The Loose Wheel said...

the 36 is NOT a start and park team. they are legit

I don't know what is going on tonight. The #71 and #36 are not S&P teams, they have attempted every race they qualifyed for. I'm confused.

Mike said...

Must be the way is Fox is doing it with the sponsored pieces. I notice they do stuff like that constantly during their Saturday afternoon baseball games. Everything has a sponsor.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Jo, you missed the Digger cartoon!

bevo said...

So if NASCAR and it's media partners say that split-screen action during commercials (like the IRL) diverts attention from the commercials doesn't it also mean that showing a cartoon character diverts attention from the product billboards when they come back to the action?

Sophia said...

maybe I am multi tasking too much but I see WAY TOO MANY IN CAR CAMS and again. not enough wide shots..and again another IN CAR CAM.

Anonymous said...

A S&P is when a team shows up to the track with the intent to park. They can't/don't buy the amount of tires needed to race.

The reasons to Start & Park - Look at the purse money. You only make a couple thousand more dollars running 400 laps compared to 50. That gives little justification to go broke buying tires and end up as a 5 lap down roadblock. I don't agree with it, but money-wise, it makes sense.

do you think when picking pit stalls that they now are making deals with the early parkers?

SPEED as the simulcast channel, no 4-video box on pit road and graphics changes.

@ Buschseries61 said...
"A S&P is when a team shows up to the track with the intent to park. They can't/don't buy the amount of tires needed to race."

i get the reason why a team is S&P. but the "traditional definition" seems to be failing us currently. and i don't know how we can determine who has an "intent" to S&P -- unless, as you intimate, they don't arrive with tires or a pit crew.

seems to me that the reality is what mike @8:37 suggests: "a car that has run an average number of laps per race that's less than what the pit-window average has been."

IF nascar was serious about S&P -- altho' they've backed off big time on that -- then they need a consistent definition.

so if i don't win the pole, i'll pick behind front row joe because i know that stall will be free after 20 laps. has to be someone's strategy

Daly Planet Editor said...

david, interesting to see Fox changing things in the middle of this run.

Remember, the fox producer is also the TNT producer. Will be interesting to see if they carry it over.

Martin Vincent said...

A S&P team doesn't even try to make it to the first round of pit stops. I was at Watkins Glen last year and saw one of the 2 MSRP teams "set up" their pit stall. One pit box and two crew guys not in fire-proof uniforms, which must be the NASCAR-mandated minimum requirement after Joe Ruttman got parked in early '04 for not having a pit crew at Rockingham. They put all their effort into a fast qualifying lap (Terry Cook's starting positions this season as proof) and drop out for bogus reasons after 5 to 20 laps.

The Loose Wheel said...

JD, I like that they are willing to adjust. Just because the season started, it shouldnt limit the production crew or network to a box that is established in Daytona or California. FOX was good for a long time of adapting to what the fans wanted, over the last few years its been rough but I think progress has been made. Now if they just get rid of the "flagstand" camera and run that shot from across pit road instead I might be a wee bit happier. For some reason that angle just bugs the heck out of me since 50% of the shot is flagman/grandstand.

Martin Vincent said...

@bozo - A car magazine (Car & Driver, I think) had an article on MSRP Motorsports a few months ago.

Dot said...

Why did NASCAR drop the S&P issue? For full car count? How unfair to the real Odd Wads.

Martin Vincent said...

@red - The S&P teams usually qualify mid-pack, so the good teams generally pick their pit stall before the S&P teams do.

The Loose Wheel said...

NASCAR never made S&P an issue though. The freelance media did.

NASCAR has not even acknowledged S&P even exists...

red said...

well, that was a serious lack on context there, guys! obviously, the producer called for that replay of the 7 slamming into the 1 but there was no explanationas to why it happened. sorta just hung out there.

The Loose Wheel said...

So DW said Jr would run well tonight, so far midpack is the best they've been. What excuse does he make for them on the Darlington pre-race next week if they can't turn it around tonight?

Newracefan said...

OK I think the S&P are having their own race, 71 back on track to get in front of all the others and now he's gone again. Sad. Jeremy is back, actually he's only 4 laps behind so he wasn't gone long good for him
