Live Blogging The Sprint Cup Series Race From Richmond On Fox

The umbrellas came out around 5:30PM just as the track was beginning to dry from an earlier shower. The weather radar is showing a group of storms over Richmond, but there is a break in the weather after that line.

The NASCAR on Fox team may be facing a very long night of racing and possibly a delay in the event until Monday.

Chris Myers is up first from the Hollywood Hotel at 7PM. He will be joined by Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Hammond. Look for Talladega aftermath, weather forecasts and a review of the Kyle vs. Junior scenario from last season.

Waltrip moves up and joins Mike Joy and Larry McReynolds if and when the race begins. Joy did monster duty for SPEED on Friday and has to be commended for his performance.

Luckily, Fox has the best crew of pit reporters on TV and hopefully access to the drivers will continue to be available. Slightly before 6PM, NASCAR moved all the cars from the grid to the garage area and put them under cover.

This post will serve to host your comments about the NASCAR on Fox telecast of the Sprint Cup Series on Fox. To add your TV-related comment, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting.

Thanks for taking some time out of your life to stop by The Daly Planet.

Nascar.com did an aticle this month on the S&P situation. It is kind of long, but gives a lot of interesting information.

How about someone mention Hornish again?!

For the bashing he got a year ago from DW and the FOX group, he deserves some credit for what has been a total 180 here in 2009

bozo said...

bottom line is the start/park qualify for the race..the other teams that want to do the whole race need to improve their qualifying

The Loose Wheel said...

They said they would investigate why they were falling out, but given the state of the economy and the small teams in general I dont expect this to get much attention from the sanctioning body until after this year.

Remember, the #78 has added races to their schedule so far this year, it makes me wonder if side deals are being made to put competitive cars out there...

The speakers are out on my TV.

Have they talked about Ambrose at all tonight? The guy is having a good few weeks, would be a shame if they don't give him a shout out.

red said...

@david: just some info from another site on the 88. apparently on that last round of stops, the pit crew made the wrong changes to the 88 and eury jr held the car until that was reversed and the called-for changes were executed.

given that they started so far back, i don't have great expectations tonight . . .altho' i'm more than willing to be proven wrong.

as for S&P: what i would like to see if some objective definition that could then be enforced. for example: no pit crew = no qualifying run. pit crew w/no firesuits = no qualifying. not enough tires for two fuel runs = no qualifying. start with the obvious ones that can be definitively documented.

let's get rid of the teams that are there to qualify, not race. sorry they can't make it but in all honesty, they don't deserve to be there if they can't run the race.

Anonymous said...

Pretty solid coverage tonight so far. I'm not going to say any more & jinx it.

Dot said...

Why aren't we seeing these love taps live?

The Loose Wheel said...

Red, if a team who plans to run the full race cant go fast enough in qualifying to do so, why are they any more deserving then a team that got it done for 2 laps and earned the spot?

If we had 50 cars at every race and 5 cars were going home that intended to run the full race while 5 start and parks were out there doing their thing my tune might change. But given we have 45-ish cars every week and only 40 are trying to run the whole race, there is no harm no foul in my eyes.

The Loose Wheel said...

whoa, SAM!

hey! lookee here, david! they be talking about hornish. you sure got someone's ear, dude!

Martin Vincent said...

@red - I like your idea about the S&P, make them spend X amount of money (on flying and lodging a minimum of 7 crew members per car, buying a set amount of tires) to make it hard for them to make a buck.

Martin Vincent said...

@David - Guys like Mayfield and Riggs are trying to run full races, but the S&P guys (#66, #09) are making it impossible for them to earn points and contend for a top-35 spot in the points. I see your point about Mayfield and Riggs having to run faster in qualifying, but then they'll be uncompetitive when the race starts.

Dot, I wish I could say I was a big wig tv network guy but alas my $190 a week paychecks from FedEx indicate otherwise...

I kinda figured if Sam had a run tonight they might talk about him since he was on trackside, the whole green flag pit lap-in thing was a huge shock to me. Pleasant as it was =)

Now lets bring back the rear bumper cam "shelf" so that way we can see the sponsor decal and know who it is without having a giant graphic waste a fifth of the screen doing the same thing and we're set.

Maybe work the camera back to about 7th and watch them guys just making their steady march to the front...

seems to me if you know you're only gonna run a few laps and not the whole race, you can do some pretty drastic set-up for qualifying, something that you obviously would not choose to do if you were planning to run the full race.

i understand the point you're making: if the non-S&Ps want in, they need to step up and qualify better. but maybe they're just trying to get into the show and not destroy their stuff in quailfying and then have nothing left for the show.

i am excited about racing b/c of the competition level, something that was important to me when i was an athlete. i want my competitors to be in it 100% and not just showing up. i wanted to compete against people who wanted to win as much as i did. otherwise, their appearance made a joke out of what i was doing and all the work i put in to be able to compete.

in my opinion, S&Pers are just "showing up" each week and that offends me.

Anonymous said...

Jack Roush has made his way to Stremme's pit box to have a discussion.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Harvick always seems to fly under the radar with these guys.

The Loose Wheel said...

Martin, thats the hole guys like Tommy Baldwin and TRG accepted when they started their teams.

Some of the start and park teams are only doing that because they are day to day with sponsorship. Nemecheck was a great example at Talladega. They got a sponsor so they ran the race. Bliss has the sponsor on the 09 tonight and they are giving it a go. But when a sponsor doesnt sign with those teams, they dont stand a chance and it makes more sense to park.

Otherwise you have a situation like Blaney had tonight or like Todd Bodine had in Bristol where you wreck a car, and all that purse money which has to repay travel, entry fee, inspection fee, payroll, etc, also has to go to buying/fixing another car.

bevo said...

OK, who's going to be the first one to make a crack about the 47 not being worried about running out of gas tonight???

Im not a fan of the S&P phenomenia. But there isn't a clearcut solution to fix it. You cant mandate to a team to run to 2 fuel stops because what if you have a legit engine failure like Kenseth had a Vegas on lap 10?

Hotaru1787 said...

Exactly!

Martin Vincent said...

@David - I didn't mention Nemechek because I know he wants to run full races. The #09 and the #66 clearly are not in it for full races and I doubt Miccosukee is a "paid sponsor" in Cup, it's just extra exposure for the money they put into Finch's Nationwide deal. The #66 only had sponsorship when Terry Labonte assured them a starting spot.

Bliss is still running a lap down.

Every time that car has had something on the side, its given it it's all. Problem is, this is only the 3rd race they've had something on it.

I agree on the #66 as well as the #64. Those to me feel like total start and park teams. The 09 is edgy depending on the week. Im wondering what happens to the 34 if they fall out of the top 35...

Martin Vincent said...

@bevo - Dale Jr. needs to pay attention so he finds his pit stall, but pit strategy and adjustments are Tony's job, I think. :)

Haus14 said...

how cool would it be if newman and stewart made the chase???

Anonymous said...

@Martin--From what's been stated, Mr. H doesn't have an issue, but I believe it's Jr. who needs to realize it. When they broke up at DEI Jr. was not happy and made it be known. He's always had family on the box and I really don't know if he's capable of truly having someone on there who isn't family. With Pops and Cousin Tony he can talk "rough" and they can talk "rough" back and I think that's what he needs. Someone who will let him be "rough" and abusive yet know they'll still be friends at the end of the day. Even in his personal life, he wouldn't have been able to survive without Kelly and that's why he depends on her to run his business and help with his contracts.

The Loose Wheel said...

ragan, the reason i have a problem with it is because you don't get an overall view of pit road, only the race off. Therefore if something happens your having to count on the eyes of the guys in the booth or a good pit reporter, which to be honest in contrast with MRN's coverage this season, has been pretty poor and behind in many areas.

I just like to see an overall view of pit road because if Im following someone who isnt in that triple pit, I can still get an idea of what they are doing.

I have some problem with exactly how to deal with the S & P-ers to avoid unintended consequences. I really have no problem with a team that dogs it one race or two so they can afford to actually compete the next week. It does seem to me that the prize money across the board should be reduced and in place give each team that qualifies 4 or 5 sets of tires. I understand tires cannot be turned back in for a refund. Maybe a car should not be allowed to start a race if it does not have a pit crew.
