Let The Indy Rain Dance Begin (5:30PM N'wide Qual - ESPN2)
SPEED updates NASCAR Live will be at 7PM with a full wrap-up of the day in Indy.
Confirmed - ESPN is now going to split the coverage between the Nationwide Series qualifying and Sprint Cup qualifying.
1:30PM - NASCAR staying on ESPN2 and tennis moving to ESPN Classic.
1:15PM - Nationwide cars are now practicing until 2PM. NASCAR is saying possible Cup qualifying at 2PM. No idea where they are going to televise it yet. Stay tuned.
Noon ET - Jet dryers are out but the mist is still falling and there is a focus on getting Nationwide Series race started tonight.
11AM - Rain again and the track drying is halted. Now long delay into afternoon. No TV schedule updates yet. SPEED and ESPN are going to have a long day.
10:15AM - Lost both tracks to rain again, schedules out the window. Will advise when changes come from NASCAR at both IMS and ORP.
Rain is going to be a factor today in Indy and that is going to leave the TV networks scrambling. Both ESPN and SPEED were all set for a sophisticated dance of splitting time on the air from the same location. Rain will change all of that.
NASCAR fans are going to have to stay on their toes to keep up with the potential changes that weather may bring to the Saturday schedule starting with the 10AM ET live qualifying scheduled for the Sprint Cup Series.
The complete TV schedule as originally planned is listed on the right side of the TDP mainpage. We will use this post to keep up with the schedule changes and get your comments on the ESPN and SPEED coverage during the daytime.

I was worried when I saw that video and heard Massa was so agitated something else was going on besides he was just angry.
Also a tweet to an article I read made no sense. Said Mass had "life saving surgery" but was in satisfactory condition? Wow, one is usually in critical condition or guarded after such a case.
I worried about blood on the brain...but nothing was hinted or mentioned at. Because he spoke "immediately" after the wreck, he was fine.
Hopefully he will be. Folks have died for years after hard bumps on the head (in sports, or other accidents)because they waved off medical help or went home and went to bed.
I hope he has a good medical team PAYING attention to his monitors.
How in the world did he fracture his skull when that spring hit his helmet? Unbelievable. Said an F2 18-yr-old driver last week was hit in the helmet with something that flew off another car, much bigger piece, and he died. Freak accidents both.
I saw the clip on Massa's incident. Just how far ahead was the Brawn car? I didn't even see it. Thankfully Massa collided with the tire barrier. Amazing that that spring could've flew anywhere and it hits him in the head.
Double coverage? BSPN giving us a treat?
WCD: dale plans to drive tomorrow and has said so in no uncertain terms. he conceded that he needs to hydrate (which likely will mean trips to infield care for IV treatments) and that kez is on back-up duty.
but he pointed out that this is lance's first car, from the wheel up, for them and he fully intends to run. says "they're" just being too cautious.
he says a stomach flu that had him sick: "i ain't never been sick like that before." certainly dehydrated and looking forward to just resting tonight.
but that qualifying lap was sweeeetttttt!
Crawl on ESPN2 says Massa's fighting for his life. Sad. He had surgery within one hour of arriving at hospital.
Sorry, JD, for OT, but such a shame.
@ Karen, the force is what did it. Helmet or not. Plus, it was near the visor.
The F2 driver was hit by a tire.
Agreed, freak accidents.
If we are getting double coverage, why aren't we seeing cars on the track?
Dot that is the million dollar question. We had all this rain fill and we couldn't have seen this earlier and actually be seeing cars on the track. This is just BS
I'm surrounded again.
@ JD, Do you need Cialis? ExtenZe?
Oh Dot that was just wrong on so many levels :)
in re: massa accident: the helmet was actually torn open above his left eye: visor snapped off the peg on that side and his left eye swollen shut before they even got him to the helicopter. one of the videos shows the spring flying directly at his helmet. it is miraculous that he didn't lose his left eye immediately.
this is the second serious head injury in open cockpit racing in two weeks. 18 year old henry surtees was killed when he was hit in the head by a tire from a competitors car (apparently the wheel tether snapped)
sad to hear that massa's condition is deteriorating.
Have you guys noticed the place is a bit empty these days?
@ Nrf, JD knows I love him.
JD It's the summer time and people vacation. I was MIA last week, wasn't taking the laptop to the beach. Did catch up when I got home.
JD, I'm taking a break now until the beginning of NW race. Don't want to OD before tomorrow. You can hold your own, I'm sure, being surrounded by so much estrogen.
That's not exactly what I mean, but I got ya.
Per crawl, Massa fighting for his life. Hope he lives to race another day.
So is Espn going to show Happy hour and just show highlights of qualifying of the Nationwide race?
You would think it would be the other way around.
@ Charlie, YAY more testosterone for JD.
If more CUPpers were over there we'd see NW qual. Plus, can't slight the big track.
ESPN is damned if you do, damned if you don't with respect to Cup Happy Hour and Nationwide Qualifying with you people. Whatever decision they make, you guys won't like it.
I'm late to the party --- again.
Been busy doing all the household chores so I won't be bothered during race hours. Clothes don't wash themselves, you know. LOL
Come on ESPN, keep us up to date with the N'wide q'ing.
@Anon, 5:47
Not mad at ESPN, just frustrated that the weather has forced us into this situation.
Off air, as cup quals were finishing up, ESPN was talking like they knew they didn't have enough to fill NNS quals. They were saying that they'd cut in for a big story or run, but that they'd stick with Final Practice for most of the time.
Poor ESad, you look funny and you smell, too.
@red...thanks, glad we heard the same thing. I also saw/heard Dale after qual lap. Just wondering why someone said he qual'd 4th, not 3rd. Was trying to dispel the thought he somehow might not be able to race tomorrow.
What was that piece with the booth guys in a boxing ring. Had TV muted. Unmuted for a second, saw Brad D in weird shirt saying something I cared not to listen to, muted, unmuted to hear Rusty saying something while the Mission Impossible (I'm old) caption comes across screen.
ESPN...go away...give your races to TNT...please.
@WCD ---
Brad was "refereeing" the discussion among all the former Indy winners.
Kind of fluffy, no real information.
Any update on why Kurt was soooo bad in qualifying
Anon 5:47PM,
Who cares about Cup practice? Televising the Nationwide quals and updating the boring laps changing setups at the Brickyard is a no-brainer.
But not for the WWL. Terrible decision driven by hype and not common sense.
Ah JD finally got your quiet comment. I am a little bit behind too. You were referring to no DJ and AP right.
Wow, another estrogen filled room for JD! :-)
JD I think more folks are out in nice weather and apparently more taping/dvr's all this NASCAR stuff these days.
re: Massa, am hearing all sorts of mixed reviews..alleged one place in UK said one source (Sky?) had already removed the story FM was in life threatening situation.
All I know is a bang in the head is always bad and at that force..critical to have observation of a savvy staff.
re: Jr
@Red Did you see where Kez can't be back up due to never being on the track and never raced at IMS before. Not allowed. So NO standby for Jr at all.
Still be SMART to have backup. I had a G.I. Virus once for 2 days and lost 16 lbs..I fought off IV's (my brother in law was a doctor) but took days to feel better. Even with IV's your electrolytes don't just SUDDENLY balance out..plus the stress of driving and being warm in car.
Common sense needs to win out here..reflexes are slowed after such illness to...
lecture, or rant, er off soapbox. :-)
You're right JD. We should be watching NW qual.
Just in time to see Steve Wallace to qual. A highlight for Rusty, he's 2nd.
Man, I tuned it to watch NW quali, saw Erik Darnell lose the pole then... CUP practice?
Practice is BORING. We want to see qualifying. Looks like they dropped the ball.
Kes is next to q'fy. He could still make some big track practice for Junior.
uhhh, i could be wrong but keselowski hasn't run any laps at ims, has it? if not, he can't take over the seat for earnhardt jr tomorrow, right? and can they get kez over to ims from orp to turn at least one lap?
I'd rather have a head cold than the other end problem if I were a driver.
@ red, that's what I read. How can one lap qualify someone to run a race anyway?
oops, sorry sophia: i posted before reading your post in re: kez and dale.
bottom line is: kez HAS to run at least one lap before nascar will let him run at ims and i still haven't heard if kez'll have time to do that today as he's at orp.
regardless, dale is planning to have his butt in that seat tomorrow.
I don't get to post much but always on this site via iphone. We have the pool in the family. And apparently the only refrigerator
YAY Morgan. Hope he makes the race.
Told you guys NW qualifying was not going to be cancelled this week.
That being said, will not be able to join you guys until next weekend since the net is off at the house.
Carry on my friends.
ESPN has massively hyped their pre-race according to what I heard on SIRIUS so lets see how that goes.
Good luck to your drivers tomorrow, mine will need it.
Really hurts seeing T-Lab in that #08.
I was disappointed with ESPN2 showing Carl's and Kyle's cars qualifying when the substitute drivers were driving really slow they could have gone over there a different time to show some other drivers who really want to make the race.
To me there doesn't seem to be a lot of commercials.
@Red
I only read it on Twitter earlier by somebody (don't member who)that kez was not going to be able to drive a lap thus no stand by for Jr.
Trish how do you post here? Cell phone or Iphone or Crackberry? I take it one of the latter.
I don't text. I use my landphones, sometimes cell (not as intimate as land phones) and don't have need/use/afford Crackberry :) )
Just amazing how folks read here.
Ok a cat on a recliner here will not move for HOURS..so when I get up I have to move laptop to table and climb over side...if the leg drops down, cat will slide off. (I know but it's rare a cat sleeps here for HOURS and it's a handicapped cat...you can't tell much by looking so leave him be)
in my their next life, a friend said he wants to come back as one of my cats because I am such a good cat mom. lol.
Back to the race.
Is it just me or the junk on the screen is JUST TOO MUCH ESPN. Honestly.
I am waiting for my cheap filet mignon to marinate another hour..then I am eating (marinating in ginger tea, bay leaf, garlic, onion, sesame oil, salt, touch of wine)
See get too much estrogen here and we start swapping recipes. Ok, i'll stop.
Have one of the pit reporters gone over to Carl's cc or even Carl to find out why they qualified so slow (compared to the other cars) and now is running 2nd quickest? What's the story?
Vicky, Carl had said after his run they really have no idea what happened.
They were slow in practice, and qualified bad. Basically they just missed the Q setup completely.
Thanks David I missed Carl's interview. I'm trying to cook dinner, feed doggy and check blog so I miss some important info.
Im not even able to see anything right now. at the library checking up on everything since im offline until next friday at the earliest.
Just heard that tidbit from Carl.
More curious on the Kurt Busch thing since that was a weird situation.
Bummed Jamie Little didnt put Skinner on the spot after he got lucky making the race.
"Are you going to attempt the full distance tomorrow?"
Not difficult, but lets tiptoe around the start and park yet again...
Was shocked at Skinner's response to the #08 since he is out there doing the exact same thing..
The "no brainer" decision for ESPN is to promote the race you've paid the big bucks. That would be the Cup race, NOT the Nationwide race.
The Nationwide series should always be a distant second fiddle to Sprint Cup coverage. It is nowhere near as important.
If practice is so boring, why do you moan and groan when practice sessions aren't shown live on TV?
Sophia, I use an IPhone. Not as great as a laptop but never at home in summer. Sundays are usually kayaking. i will be lucky to be able to check this site tomorrow as we are hitting the rough section.
When summer is over I will be in recliner watching tv.
@trish
Thanks for the explanation! I wondered how some folks did that..I know some tweet from restaurants, games and such. :)
@david
Did not catch Skinner's comment to 08 if he indeed is doing the same thing. I am used to Mike in trucks..forgot in CUP it is a S&Park team...sigh..torn there.
BUT I really wanted Max to make it. If Skinner parks after a few laps tomorrow, I will be irked.
I UNDERSTAND S&P (some need it to survive) but stop the tricking of the engines to get IN the race or whatever they do that's over my head.....sigh
@ dear Sophia, ditto to your comment to David.
OT
re: Massa read this tweet..if this is true my mind is wondering what the hell is up with his eye and the brain injury. Thoughts and prayers to Felipe and his family and medical team for a quick recovery.
Ferrari's Felipe Massa is now recovering from surgery for a skull fracture. Won't race tomorrow and is likely out rest of season
Not much "tricking" of the engines to make these races actually.
If you do the math trying to trick out an engine just to make a race means you have to rebuild it after every attempt, and engines are in the ballpark of $60,000 a pop. Not cheap when your on a budget. Thats why they qualify in 20-30 something-land most of the time.
I did see Red Bull covering its butt fielding the car for Nemecheck just in case. Expect that car to park quickly.
I was pulling for Max too, I get the S&P thing and don't have too much issue but I dont want to hear S&P teams complaining about OTHER S&P teams. I draw the line there.
Bayne get pole for NW?
Sophia, i figured that would be the case on Massa. Severe injury and with the G loads those things go though, he is most definiately out for the rest of the year, the season is already half over and there is no rush to get him back if he isn't 100%
I only hope he doesnt lose his ride as a result come next season if he can still race.
@ David, yes Bayne on the pole. He's one of the youngest. Funny, one of the oldest is on the CUP pole.
Bayne vs. Coleman will be interesting.
The Lagasse situation is a joke. Cant believe the mess CMJ must be in to lose both the driver and the sponsor after Iowa.
Never shoulda canned Keller....
@David Yes the 99 car Trevor Bayne got the pole
N Live on Speed right now. Guide is wrong. I taped Monster Jam @ 3:30. Yeah, I know JD warned us.
@ David, what IS the deal w/Lagasse? It doesn't involve the Wallace dust up, does it?
Alright my friends, away i go. should anyone care to talk during the event I will hang around one of my messengers on my cell. Data is too expensive to browse during lol.
Enjoy the race, Im pulling for the Darnell kid.
aim--timberwolfy52
Back next week for the Poc-oh-no-zone.
No idea dot. im out of the loop severely. no internet since early in the week. wont have it back until next friday at the soonest.
thats why I ask. I imagine its nothing to do with the Wallace thing and is more a "business" decision by CMJ. If the driver and sponsor are leaving together, then something probably isnt right inside the organization.
He had run well this year but has alot of torn up cars to show for it, its a team on a budget so that might answer that.
New post is up for the Nationwide Series race on ESPN tonight.
