Live Blogging Monday's NASCAR TV

Update: ESPN has added a re-air of the Watkins Glen Sprint Cup Series race at 9PM ET on ESPN Classic. Great move.

The RaceDay gang says they are raring to go at Watkins Glen and waiting for 11AM to come on the air. SPEED will handle the one hour pre-race show and then ESPN will start live coverage of the rain delayed Sprint Cup Series race at noon ET.

John Roberts, Jimmy Spencer and Kenny Wallace are the RaceDay panel. Wendy Venturini and Hermie Sadler are the reporters. This program should feature the weather, the Nationwide Series race and reset the grid for the Cup Series event.

ESPN has Jerry Punch, Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree calling the race. Down on pit road will be Jamie Little, Dave Burns, Shannon Spake and Vince Welch.

The racing should be outstanding with the new restart rules and hopefully good weather will allow things to go off without a hitch.

This race re-airs on SPEED at noon ET on Wednesday in a three hour timeslot. NASCAR Now is on ESPN2 at 5PM. Will be pushed back if race runs long.

This post will serve to host your comments on the Monday NASCAR TV from SPEED and ESPN. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thank you for taking the time out of your Monday to stop by The Daly Planet.

32 laps in about 50 minutes

thay COULD have run yesterday before rain hit.

No Dot. They are clueless.

NP Dar. I pay attention to the sponsors sadly...SIRIUS always promotes the race with it's title sponsor unlike certain television networks

boyd said...

dot Probably trying just 2 or 3 pits stops

The Loose Wheel said...

I know annon @ 1:16. I know.

darbar said...

WOW, they are actually talking about someone not in the top 5. Good job for Kenseth, my homeboy

bevo said...

Shades of TNT's meltdown in Sonoma if everyone remembers that

Anonymous said...

ESPN - The role of the play-by-play announcer is to inform the viewer what is going on. Clueless

Tim Brewer & Andy Petree are your expert crew cheifs. Tim is gone, (but I'm sure they have a pre-recorded piece on what a brake rotor is). Andy is lost. Clueless.

I finally found a station with MRN!

darbar said...

OK, do they have to show both the commercials from yesterday PLUS any commercials from Sportscenter, the show they're replacing? Sure seems like it.

Daly Planet Editor said...

bevo, remember when Weber interrupted Kyle saying a team prayer? Priceless...

Jason said...

this race is boring

Sophia said...

Mike PRICELESS comment about driving 1700 miles.

LMAO :-)

Multi tasking and in and out of room with radio JD but enjoying MRN...just the VIBE it gives out and the details as they come in.

Tv is robbing us of any good pictures due to camera work that is rubbish at best. What's with all the useless split cams?

K Bu is leading...sigh...Jamie Mc back in garage..not sure what made his car slow...CC says transmission problems :(

I LOVE MRN!!

thank you FM station for stronger signal.

Haus14 said...

My reply to Marty Smith, "Marty, I feel your pain, I am watching the ESPN broadcast too. I have had the MRN broadcast on since lap 3."

bevo said...

When is the contract up with ESPN?

Anonymous said...

From MRN: #26 lost a gearbox - to the garage.

From ESPN: Commercial

The Loose Wheel said...

Garbage like this really makes one miss RaceBuddy...

boyd said...

I wish Marty was there, then maybe I would not be so lost with this commercial block.

This is just gawdawfull

really awful

Joey Logano spins out

Broke transmissions in Texas for Jamie M and now WG

Logano spins in turn 1 back on course now.

What were the crew chiefs of Kahne, Kurt Busch, and Ambrose thinking? If it was just a blatant mistake, I wanna hear it. If not, what is the thinking?

Phathead said...

I'd really like them to show some other racing on the track... I'm getting bored watching JJ

Charlie said...

Logano gets loose slows, Reutimann runs into the back of him and spins Logano. Logano gets going again.

@JD-remember it well.

Did AP say he didn't know what was going on coming out of the break?

aw, why bother showing it, right?

SalB said...

I found an MRN station on line that I can listen to....thank heavens!

They spend so much time replaying spins/passes they miss so much green flag action.

For the 3 late pitters

no mistake...2 stop race...pitting under green is good on a road course

If you were listening to MRN/Sirius you would understand

Bob said...

NO Smoke on Hotpass either this week.

Only Mr Ed, Shrub, Big Daddy and Montoya - sorry no nickname for him - any help?

boyd said...

Bob, how about John Paul?

Phathead said...

Jr missed his pit sign again...

Sophia said...

Dale JR into the wall head on

CRIPES!!!!!!!!!!

boyd said...

Phathead, but found the tire wall

Charlie said...

Caution 3, Lap 41, Dale Jr. in the tires. Dale Jr said he lost his brakes. Dale Jr hit Sorenson with no brakes.

Phathead said...

boyd - good point lol

Sophia said...

MRN said Jr lost his brakes I thought :(

Anonymous said...

Since this blog is about TV I'm not commenting much - TV is muted & I'm listening to green flag racing on MRN

The Loose Wheel said...

Someone, anyone that has an MRN stream please share!

Hit up the email

boyd said...

Okay, not a JR. fan, but couldn't he have downshifted when he knew he didn't have brakes?

Haus14 said...

Sirius got the Stewart channel fixed.

Phathead said...

boyd - downshifting woulda most likely caused the rear tires to lock and he woulda went spinning uncontrollably on the track. Woulda caused a lot more problems that way

boyd said...

Thanks Phathead.

Phathead said...

So no one can critize Kyle Busch when he pulls his whiny BS on a weekly basis, but Ambrose's crew makes one questionable call and they throw them under the bus repeatedly?

How does THAT work?

Charlie said...

Most cars are staying out. Marcos does pit.

Anonymous said...

I am not really watching closely

but are the pit reporters actually there?

not used much as usual.

boyd said...

The pit reports aren't need, JP is asking all the questions of the driver (DJ) and the crew chief (AP)

Daly Planet Editor said...

Phat, just like in 2007 this Cup season on ESPN is now all about controversy.

Even DJ's scripted question to Marcos about being ready to "ruffle feathers" for the win was lame.

Hope they remember last time the drivers revolted.

boyd said...

Never mind they're not actually racing on the track.

The Loose Wheel said...

found MRN! Thank God!!!!!!!

SalB said...

With the lack of useful info we get, be glad they aren't depending on the pit reporters!

From JGR media rep:

Almost every car in the top 15 coasted down the front stretch! It was completely silent - strange experience.

I don't know how many times under this caution JP has said "we're under caution". When he keeps repeating himself like that, he's about done for the day.

Phathead said...

JD -

Oh I get the controversy part, I'm just wondering why the never acknowledge when Busch pulls crap yet Ambrose is up there for a change and they're ripping him to hell.

Makes me wonder just how jilted their agenda really is

these laps under caution would be a good time to rundown the entire field but NOOOOOO...gotta have commercial

Phathead said...

Sophia said...

Jr tried to miss the 43..he went to brake and they were gone...he tried pumping them and they were gone.

gravel trap and barrier and HANS device helped...asked if that was his hardest hit he'd taken...he said no...

can't help but think of his Dad at these times...those sudden stops :(

MRN said Jr was disappointed but still gave them a smile at the end of interview. he sounded disappointed obviously.>TOUGH year for Jr

The Loose Wheel said...

First race at Talladega drivers revolted for real lol.

Glenn Jarrett interviewing Jr. Great interview. Man, these Jarrett's cover races like nobody's business!

SalB said...

It's interesting to hear Jr.,s interview on MRN. Much more forthcoming and chatty than he is with the ESPN crew.

The Loose Wheel said...

Pretty much a lap behind but beats what I had.

Bob said...

Did they just think KB was the leader?

I have 18 channel on HP and they had him as #2 during caution

huh?

bevo said...

We might as well be watching rush hour on any freeway in America with the insight ESPN is giving us on these cars

TexasRaceLady said...

I think I'm going to take a nap.

I'm sure not able to watch a race.

The Loose Wheel said...

WOW, HUGE difference between the MRN and ESPN interview. Nuff said.

MRN interviewed Jr before espn. just saw video

The Loose Wheel said...

me too JD. He is always a pleasure

boyd said...

Wouldn't it be nice to hear a driver just say, 'it was a piece of crap, and I'm glad I don't have to drive it today'?

Sophia said...

ESPN sound with Jr interview can't hear it? volume up all the way

just as well...he sounded more dejected there..guess reality is sinking in or ESPN vibe or both.

Tone of Jr's interview between MRN and ESPN completely different. wow

bevo said...

That's because Glenn and Dale grew up in the sport and know how to talk to the drivers

darbar said...

Does anyone else think that ESPN has three cameras mounted on donkeys? With the bad shots, it wouldn't surprise me.

SalB said...

Kyle B says that all the time!

The Loose Wheel said...

The Loose Wheel said...

Charlie said...

What a difference in this race and Saturday. This race been shown now would make you think why go to this race. It is boring.
Maybe it is not the race but Marty Reid vs. Jerry Punch.

Anonymous said...

David, did he say that on ESPN the world wide leader in sports?

He did.

"Can they get you back out here?"

"Man, I hope not"

Charlie said...

Lap 53, Newman gets tapped by Carpentier, Newman spins but keeps going.

darbar said...

I had to rewind the broadcast to see if what I heard was correct. Vince said "you can see where the water is coming out of the car. On the side that's overheating". I had no idea a car can overheat on one side only. LOL

bevo said...

The reason pits are so busy "all of a sudden" is because they count backwards. Nice way to be prepared ESPN

The Loose Wheel said...

Find myself tuning more and more out of this ESPN kindergarten performance and 70% listening to the radio. Bummed ESPN might ruin the race for me today. Wow, big calls for these guys that made it to pit road. Bummer for Reed.

Charlie said...

Sorenson in the gravel. May not be able to get out. No reason given on Tv. Tv to busy covering pit stops.

Good to see the brand new interns are picking the camera shots today.
Nice of the Director & Co to give them experience.

Now could the real Director please take control back?

Just got an update from ESPN. They have added a re-air tonight on ESPN Classic at 9PM ET.

Good deal!

The Loose Wheel said...

Fuel only for Vickers. Very interesting call.

Bill Jordan said...

Anyone watching ESPN have a clue whats going on in the race?

I sure don't.
Heck they cant even run a 1.5mile oval and keep us up to date on a race, what was I expecting out of a road course......

bevo said...

I'm out, going to listen to the rest of the race on Sirius. Yall have a great day!

according to MRN Harvick back on track.

Charlie said...

Kurt Busch pits, Tv just shows pit stop of Busch even when the race is still green.

Anonymous said...

Didn't the 47 just pit a few laps back?

I think ESPN missed it.

The Loose Wheel said...

Reporting Ambrose needs to save 2 laps. 2 laps short on fuel

Anonymous said...

thought rule for road course is pit when you can make it to end?

Anonymous said...

More in car/single car /dash cam.
The donkey must have overheated on 1 side Sheesh.

If not for MRN I'd be lost with these camera shots. Could they do a few more single car shots!

SalB said...

J Gordon and Mark Martin have been invisible on TV today, haven't they?

Lot of questions out there to be answered and no answers on Tv.

I cant get radio coverage in my building. Finally had to go load the live leader board from nascar. At least now I know whos were and so on.

Race Buddy where are you???

The Loose Wheel said...

18 short on fuel too. Coming back from break going to updated ALL fuel situations. Why can't ESPN be this efficient?

Sophia said...

I'm out of here too.

Can't take ESPN even on mute as the camera work is totally disjointed.

As usual.

Why are ratings down? Try watching the race on tv.

no thanks if you have MRN or online choice

We just missed a crash on ESPN. They were in commercial and came back to the damage already complete. Jeff Gordon one of the involved.
Not surprising.

boyd said...

Wow, that was bad

The Loose Wheel said...

Wow! least they got a camera right there off 9 now

darbar said...

Oh man, what a horrible hit !!! Hornish was just spinning and really hit Gordon. That was nasty

MikeC said...

Evidently, that's not enough of a violent hit for Jerry to get excited about.

Charlie said...

Caution 4 lap 61, Kahne gets into Hornish and sends Hornish into the tires. Hornish bounces off the tires and spins, taking out Gordon, Burton. Lagaon involved to.

petree has been exposed as a joke today. ESPN has always been one in regards to their nascar coverage since their return.

i know more about the race from Race Trax and TDP. Feel like I'd be better off following this at work and not at home with the TV.

The Loose Wheel said...

Good report by MRN, saying JPM got a piece too. Admitting they have to use sprint vision because of where it occured. love full disclosure!

MikeC said...

Wonder what's going on....as Petree and DJ have not been able to follow the strategies correctly. I wonder if it's because the cameras are focusing on just certain cars or what the deal is.

Amol said...

It's not the armco that bounces the cars back onto the track, it's the tire wall at the outlet of turn 9. The same thing happened to Jason Leffler in Nationwide practice. The issue is that the track narrows up there because of the armco at the other side of the track, Gordon hit the armco at the right side of the track.

Can't believe they missed Ambrose's gas-and-go stop on Lap 55...wish there was some online timing feature that told you when each guy pitted and how long they were stopped for.

Anonymous said...

N.com didn't even say. Thanks guys.

Charlie said...

Red flag lap 63 for cleanup.

Matt said...

Are the ESPN annoucers doing this race from the studios in Bristol? They are so detached from what is going on they must be in another state, right?

SalB said...

That's twice now that Hornish has been involved in a hard wreck. I wonder if it was better hitting the sand barrels last year?

Anonymous said...

Red flag. Now I can catch up w/comments. Sorry if I asked things before reading.

I love TDP.

Sophia said...

MRN guy said Hornish fell to ground on his own volition after the wreck? I take it he meant after he got out of the car?

Lightheaded maybe..did they mention that on ESPN...am watching the reply...OMG..vicious indeed...poor Sam

Sam was overwhelmed obviously

THANK GOD he is ok we hope

Anonymous said...

Phathead said...

That's the kind of incident you jump out of commercial for

The Loose Wheel said...

Sal, probably was because it doesn't rapidly change the direction of the car like the tires do. The Gordon hit was probably just as bad as the initial hit though. Bad day for my fantasy team. Dangit.

boyd said...

With all that NASCAR has done for safety, will they do something about this section of track?
This is the third wreck this weekend in this turn, and they were all bad.

Bob said...

not defending them but they are sitting at the start/finish line and cant see most of the track so they have to use the monitors.

Charlie said...

Sharp pit reporter talking to Marcos crew chief. He says they aren't using fuel while the car is shut off.

Unknown said...

ESPN has completely missed the pit strategy several times. Petree has kept saying Ambrose has to pit again about 10,000x... and the team obviously said he was done pitting. We coulda figured that out a long time ago. ESPN is useless, missed the road course pit strategy big time.

Anonymous said...

Kahnes car stepped out made Hornish loose - Hornish could not recover - into wall, then airborne across track collected the 24 and others. Hit on Hornish was so bad it ripped fuel cell out of car. Jeff walked to ambulance. 31 was also involved.

Amol said...

2 straight years, 2 straight huge wrecks at the Glen, didn't think that was going to happen.

Bill Jordan said...

Anonymous said...

Can someone give a detailed account of the crash? I'm stuck at work.

The 9 pushed the 77 off the track. The 77 hit the wall, then came spinning (violently) back across the track hitting the 24. Causing the 24 to go HARD into the metal wall and the 31.

Phathead said...

Hornish did 3 helicopter spins

YES, he (Kahne) got loose. That's what led to the wreck!
We should know. We're watching, aren't we?
I am...sound off on TV, radio turned up to MRN.

Haus14 said...

That was a bit of sobering crash for me. I was run off of the left lane of the interstate this past spring and came back across 3 lanes of traffic. Fortunately, by the grace of God, I wasn't hit by another car and just went down the embankment off the side of the interstate. Totaled the car and I was sore, but that was it. Obviously, I wasn't travelling quite that fast, but it is sobering to think of what could have happened had I been hit by a semi travelling at 70 mph.

Phathead said...

Why does Jerry keep saying 'Marcus' Ambrose?

The Loose Wheel said...

Glen, love what he did. He led Sam by saying he had a great car and let Sam talk about his race then talk about what happened. One simple line then let the driver take over. THATS how its done!

Charlie said...

Jerry Punch making me look bad. When they came out of commercial Punch said it was lap 61 when the wreck happened and it was really lap 63.

OK, I am going to try something a little different today.

There will be a new post up right after the finish without any comments from me.

This will let you all offer some longer-form comments without having to agree or disagree with me.

Lost on the Straightaway said...

Do they have any room to widen the run off area of that turn? Looks like it could use a wide gravel trap and a thick tire barrier beyond that.

inkthatpaints said...

I love how Andy completely blew off and ignored the bean/gas joke by Punch. Not even a sympathy chuckle.

The Loose Wheel said...

Lost the problem with that is it is actually the opening for the boot which is the excess of the course that is not used. So putting gravel there is impossible. Unfortunately the tires are the simplest, easiest thing to clean up in event of a wreck. Remember how we had foam off of 11 in the past and how much of a pain that was to clean up?

Tv has talked to all the drivers involved and all are ok.

Haus14 said...

Darian Grubb: "Thunderstorms starting to pop up 17 - 18 miles away."

boyd said...

The other mic is for the drivers or whoever he is talking with.

The Loose Wheel said...

the headset is probably to talk to producers as well as to talk directly on the radio where the hand held is specific for driver interviews

Once again the weather could play a role in today's outcome.

Let's see if ESPN production team will show the radar and add this element in these closing laps.

Line of storms already developing between Buffalo and Watkins Glen.

This red flag only allows these storms to move closer to the Glen.

Is ESPN on top of this ??

I don't know why, maybe my age is showing...I got tears in my eyes when Sam was interviewed on ESPN..then when the girl walked away, Sam's expression changed like he was still shook up at what he went thru...then he was ok for MRN a bit later.

Glad those cars are safer.
