Live Blogging The Nationwide Series From Watkins Glen (2:30PM ET - ESPN2)

Here we go with what might be one of the best races of the season. ESPN2 will be covering the Nationwide Series event beginning at 2:30PM ET.

Allen Bestwick will have thirty minutes to set the table for the race from the Infield Pit Studio. Bestwick will have his regular panelists Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty alongside. This show should revolve around the wide variety of personalities in the field.

Sprint Cup drivers, Nationwide regulars, road course ringers and one-time Watkins Glen specials will make up the field. The result is going to be a very different on-track dynamic than fans have seen so far this season in the Nationwide Series.

Once things get underway, it will be Marty Reid calling the action with Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree alongside. On pit road will be Jamie Little, Shannon Spake, Dave Burns and Vince Welch.

The weather looks good, the TV crew is experienced and the track is poised to feature the new NASCAR restart rules into a very exciting Turn 1. The ingredients are in place, we shall see how it all plays out.

This post will serve to host your comments about the ESPN2 coverage of the Nationwide Series from Watkins Glen. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks for taking the time to stop by.

Ready for a shocker, everyone?... The #91 MSRP Motorsports car may not start and park today. The car looks to be Peyton Sellers' backup car and Peyton may replace Dave Blaney in it since he failed to qualify. Another scenario would have Mike Bliss getting in the car to maintain his position in the driver point standings after getting released from the #1 Phoenix Racing seat. Mike practiced the car in the final practice session.

Martin Vincent said...

Update: Chris Cook moves from the #90 to the #23 and Mike Bliss replaces Cook in teh #90. No word yet on if Peyton Sellers will be moving to the #91.

Anonymous said...

Punch just said that NW race is 200 miles - is this correct?

Martin Vincent said...

@Anon 2:30 - Yes, 200.9 miles. (82 laps x 2.45 mile)

The Loose Wheel said...

MV, Bliss has been stated as a start and park if he runs.

Story has it thats what he would do if he ran an MSRP car on SIRIUS all day. However, he may run the 87 the next few races if they can put a deal together that would allow him to run several races.

As for the #1, they are trying to get drivers past this week. Some are reporting Bowyer running the next 2 after this week, SIRIUS says no.

Now if either MSRP actually RACES, id be SHOCKED. Never in the organization's existence have they tried so why expect something new now? lol.

Little bored of the REPETITION here this weeekend.

@David - If Peyton Sellers is shown as driving the #91, it would probably run the whole race. It's Peyton's car, they were planning and had the finances to run a whole race with the #77 and they have the crew on hand to pit the car. That's the only reason I see that the car was identical to Peyton's car except for the number.

The Loose Wheel said...

ok. had not seen the 91 so did not know that was the case.

good move by sellers' group though

Daly Planet Editor said...

I really can't believe Rusty did not ask Mike Helton if he could get a Sprint Cup Series race for Iowa.

boyd said...

Maybe there's a ban on begging and tweeting

Vicky D said...

JD - it looked like Rusty was at a loss for words - which hasn't happened very often although I have hoped that would happen sometimes during the races. Would have been an ideal question to ask him.

when and how did the famous chicane become "the bus stop"?

its kind of an insult to race fans.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anyone have the updated forecast? I heard them talking about rain tires.

Martin Vincent said...

@Anon 2:48 - I've always known that series of turns as the Inner Loop. It does look like the path a bus would take to get out of traffic, pick up passengers and then rejoin traffic, so the analogy works.

Patrick said...

Brewer: "De-accelerate"????

boyd said...

Weather.com says no rain until around 7 local time, then storms Sunday and Monday.

Martin Vincent said...

Lots of rain passing over Lake Erie right now, having just passed over Buffalo and West Seneca. The hour-by-hour forecast doesn't show showers until 7pm though.

TexasRaceLady said...

Tomorrow looks wet. *sigh*

Anonymous said...

Wasn't the Inner Loop installed after JD McDuffie was killed in Winston Cup at Watkins Glen?

Patrick said...

Anonymous at 2:48,

A "bus stop" is a common term with that type of chicane/double chicane. Daytona has one on the road course to break the momentum while on the oval portion of the track.

Haus14 said...

did anyone else notice that the music used during the Brad K highlight piece is the same music that the NFL network uses as their bumper music for their Thurs. and Sat. NFL games on the network....I thought it was interesting for two reasons. 1st I would have thought that the NFL network owned the rights to the song. 2nd I would think that ESPN would want to use something that was not associated with another network.

Martin Vincent said...

@Anon 2:55 - Yes, I believe it was a year or 2 after J.D.'s fatal crash. I'm sure Tommy Kendall's IMSA crash was a factor too.

The Loose Wheel said...

Iowa getting a Cup race right now would be overkill to me. No way you'd add the race and where would it come from? ISC nor SMI are going to "give" one of their dates to Iowa so that probably kills that discussion I think

Daly Planet Editor said...

Haus,

The choices are to create original music that is owned, rent library music that is themed or use current popular music and pay the rights fee.

If I told you how much a certain TV network paid Aerosmith...remember that...you would croak.

Daly Planet Editor said...

David, there are several dates right now that are in question because of the economy. You already know the truck series is being cut back for next season.

Don't be surprised if things change for the Cup Series rather dramatically for 2011.

Dave Blaney still in the #91, according to NASCAR.com's Live Leaderboard.

S&P today: 91, 90, 49 and 0. #41 is a possible.

kbaskins said...

JD, the only good ones this year have been the military bands, and the guy who regularly sings the anthem for the Pocono races. He absolutely nails it.

I figure these other singers (and I use the term loosely) are just using the opportunity to pad their portfolio, so they have to tart up their anthem performances. It's an appalling practice.

Do you really think Iowa can handle a Cup race today without a major infusion of cash?

Thats where I just scratch my head. Both Kentucky and Iowa have alot of work to do before they are Cup-ready facilities, but thats just my opinion. Both need to add grandstands, Iowa BIG time if they expect to handle a Cup crowd, plus the infrastructure around the track has to accomodate 80+ thousand people for a weekend. Remember Rockingham and Wikes?

Im not against it, just asking a fair question. We got in trouble just "awarding" dates to tracks like Homestead, Vegas, Chicago, and Kansas without seeing the consequences as TWO of those tracks have undergone MAJOR rennovations since they got on the schedule.

Plus still, ISC and SMI hold dates that neither side I am sure will budge on. Im skeptical of a massive schedule overhaul in Cup. Especially with the lingering Kentucky lawsuit. Still a dangerous wild card in my eyes.

Trucks cutting back, thats a crime in my eyes

Daly Planet Editor said...

Martin, that's not bad for the way the season has been going.

Karen, I still think they should let the fans vote for which one to play back on the Sprint Vision screen.

Get the fans into it.

Martin Vincent said...

Telluride and Megan Linville (the anthem chick) are doing a post-race concert tonight at the track.

Daly Planet Editor said...

David, they showed they could get 55 thousand for a Nationwide Series race and it went off without a hitch.

They would have to make some permanent seat additions, but the racing and the resulting radio and TV coverage was outstanding.

kbaskins said...

@NASCAR_NNS just tweeted that the Canadian national anthem was just completed. I'm relieved I didn't have to listen to that "singer" butcher my national anthem like she did yours. I'd like to thank the director for not including that in the broadcast. :-)

See, Twitter does have a place in NASCAR. It just put a smile on my face.

Well, California was a disaster, Atlanta was empty, Phoenix was totally empty and Martinsville is just about out of time. Should be interesting to see Kentucky and Iowa get in the mix.

Martin Vincent said...

@KarenB - Thanks, I'll try it today instead of NASCAR.com.

@JD - A few of the DNQ today would probably have been S&P: 31, 05 and 52.

Martin Vincent said...

@KarenB - Two years ago, the singer sounded like Canada was spelled with an "e". Maybe she thought it was Can-eh!-da.

The Loose Wheel said...

Still a skeptic for now JD. They would HAVE to force Cali to dump a date as well as Atlanta before any new tracks got added. My guess at least.

We really need to dump the in-car reporter gimmick. I hate it.

kbaskins said...

@bobpockrass tweets that all the teams have one set of rain tires mounted and ready to go on the cars.

I hope they do. Last year in Montreal (not Watkins Glen, like Mike Helton said) was crazy fun watching them race in the rain.

--KarenB

Patrick said...

Nice pictures of the first lap. Wide shots and straight on shots through the middle turns. So far, so good. Just one momentary on-board shot. Not too bad.

The Loose Wheel said...

Phoenix was totally empty? They do pretty well considering. Never understood why we got a 2nd date, but we can look at ISC for that one.

Both ISC and SMI HAVE to be willing to budge for other tracks to have a chance and I just dont see it happening. When some of the folks running ISC also have an interest in NASCAR, ISC budging is a long shot at best. Phoenix and Cali were awesome as single date tracks. Martinsville, they are a victim of poor scheduling. Atlanta and Bristol bookend it. You KILL your crowd in this type of an economy just due to simply poor scheduling.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Cali might be doing a lot more than just dumping a date if things don't change...

Nice to have Marty Reid calling the action right now. Still exciting after three laps.

boyd said...

Hey, notice that the PxP guy is making statements during his commentary, rather than asking questions?

Daly Planet Editor said...

The Loose Wheel said...

JD, thought Conway's schedule was done for the year

Patrick said...

That's my point. It's Joe's car.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anonymous said...

I just realized Ryan Newman is driving the James Finch car today.

Patrick said...

Daly Planet Editor said...

I know the ads ended, I just wondered what he was up to

Is that a pun, JD?

The Loose Wheel said...

Well Conway was not running Joe's stuff in his races. It was I believe his ARCA team fielding the car just Joe listed as the owner. Joe runs Chevy's when NEMCO fields the car, Conway was in Toyota's which is his ACRA make. Much like when Bayne ran his first race, MWR might have fielded the car and equipment but they were paid to do so by the person who invested in Bayne. Thus why Aarons was not on the car until the races Mikey was supposed to run but decided not to.

Conway may not have had a car ready to race, plus I think he only had a 5 race deal which is done. Joe is rumored to have Mike Bliss in his car the next few races if they can strike a deal. Joe is running to keep the car in the top 30 in owners points plain and simple.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Hehe, he seemed to be a nice guy but I never got a clue what his future was and how those ads may have affected it.

Vicky D said...

I've been checking Fox News about the crash in NY and trying to keep track of the NW regulars here. It's a good broadcast so far.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Have you all noticed that we are watching a live race on ESPN and no one has negative comments on the coverage?

What a concept...we are actually watching!

Martin Vincent said...

@JD - Conway's deal with the #87 was for 5 races, Dover, Nashville, Kentucky, Gateway and ORP.

boyd said...

I have the radio ready, but haven't thought of turning it on yet.

TexasRaceLady said...

@JD

It is nice to be able to watch a race, for a change.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Vicky, the best news reports on that issue have been coming from regular citizens using social media to connect with the cable TV networks. Amazing...

Imagine what ESPN could do if they harnessed the energy and the excitement of the fans?

What a blast that would be...

Patrick said...

David,

Good info there. Thanks.
About Bliss: while I'm not a fan (his personality seems belligerent and complains a lot), it would be a shame to let his driver standings go to waste (6th?).

Anonymous said...

David-

The Bayne situation wasn't a pay driver deal like some of them. Bayne's actually was a DEI development driver before that team turned into a bit of a disaster.

Ty Norris who used to run things at DEI and now works for MWR made a deal to have Bayne run a bun of non-companion races in the 99.

kbaskins said...

@ JD

We're seeing Danica's godaddy.com ads instead of Brad's because she seems to "have what it takes" to be a Go Daddy girl. Brad's gonna have to grow some man-boobs to get his ads on TV.

They call the "inner loop" the "bus stop chicane" during Indycar weekend. And the ABC Indycar lead announcer is in the booth today, probably explains the change in name.

Daly Planet Editor said...

karen, they actually filmed those Junior commercials to cater to the NASCAR crowd. That is why I was asking...strange.

Anonymous said...

Breath of fresh air to hear this coverage. Play by play pertinent and elucidating.

Charlie said...

If there going to show full screen pit stops for everyone pitting we will miss quite a bit of the race on the track.

The Loose Wheel said...

Annon:

I was under the impression that the co-owner of Tommy Baldwin Racing was footing the bill for Bayne to race the #99 at Nashville and Kentucky and that once he ran well enough, they gave him more races.

Norris may have made that deal with him, but that was because they were needing to put a butt in the seat and fund the car for those races to again maintain owners standings because regardless your standings if you skip an attempt, your GOGH the remainder of the year. Roush learned that the hard way last season as did JGR.

Believe that Norris did make that deal since he ran DEI for so long (killed them when he left I feel) but there was a 3rd party involved in funding those races as well.

Martin Vincent said...

Didn't know Kris Szekeres was going to S&P and my suspicion that Tom Hubert could park has just been confirmed.

The Loose Wheel said...

thanks again MV. Couldnt for the life of me remember his name lol.

I do know he is involved with TBR though too.

kbaskins said...

@ JD

The ads with Danica obviously drive more traffic to godaddy.com than Junior's or Brad's. Go Daddy doesn't care if it's a NASCAR or IRL race, they're gonna broadcast their most popular ads. It's strange from our viewpoint, but we're not their target demographic. Young men who want to look at Danica's funbags are.

It makes you wonder why they bother to sponsor Junior and Brad, though. Maybe it's just an excuse to run their Danica commercials during NASCAR races.

--KarenB

Martin Vincent said...

@JD - The #31 of Daryl Harr looks to be a legitimate entry this week and the #41's purse just adds to the income to finance the #31. That's exactly what Brian Keselowski said he was doing whenever he's fielding the #96.

Using Tom Hubert just guaranteed that they would make the field instead of attempting it with a guy like Justin Hobgood.

Vicky D said...

JD, Rusty could have been put in that car and parked it just as easily!

kbaskins said...

Dale and Andy seem to be getting more comfortable in their roles as the race progresses. They seemed kind of hesitant at the beginning.

--KarenB

The Loose Wheel said...

Same reason Rensi brought out the #35 at the end of last year. Helped run the #25 even though Bobby Jr paid out of pocket. Every dollar counts when your race to race

Vicky D said...

They need to show more NW guys but I guess they are stuck behind all the cup ones (except Vickers) or they were replaced by them.

The Loose Wheel said...

Kinda shocked Andy hasnt mentioned that some teams will reverse the front and rear carriers and changers for the Glen so that their routine getting around the car is not majorly different to either guy in how they maneuver.

Either way, much much slower stops this weekend. Probably what happened to the 18

good race to show in and out times off pit road including stops

Daly Planet Editor said...

karen,

Like I said in my original column, this is a big deal for ESPN.

Marty, DJ and Andy may be the face of NASCAR on ESPN next season.

Punch and Evernham just did not really fit in upstairs. Remember, ESPN is doing the MIS Nationwide race live WITHOUT a play by play announcer.

That will give DJ a chance to see how he handles the lead role without admitting what it really is.

That should be interesting....

Daly Planet Editor said...

I wish they had DJ Copp in the Tech Garage today instead of Brewer. Who needs him for a road course....

Martin Vincent said...

In addition to the #86 and #0, it looks like the #91 is about to pull off as well.

boyd said...

So can I JD.

Martin Vincent said...

#91 is hanging in there, you gotta wonder if they were really serious when they said they were start and parking until they could find sponsorship...

kbaskins said...

@ JD

I've actually been kind of worried about this race, because I'm hoping it's an audition for next year. I've had my fingers crossed that Marty, DJ and Andy could have some great chemistry in the booth that would make it impossible for the ESPN brass to ignore.

The beginning of the race was not what I was hoping for, but the guys have definitely improved as the race has progressed. For the good of the sport, the broadcasts with these three guys need to be so fantastic that ESPN management can't ignore the problems with the Cup broadcasts.

--KarenB

The Loose Wheel said...

MV you think maybe because the 91 is not their car and is instead Sellers' car that they are giving it a run?

They've had Cajun Industries on the cars a few times this year yet still S&P'ed so I dont totally buy that claim on sponsorship = race with that group anymore.

Anonymous said...

Well either I've finally gotten used to the bottom ticker or they have finally decided to keep the speeds on the top & bottom tickers near even. I haven't needed big chunk of blue tape today.

Actually just enjoying the race. Good shot selection today & the hyperactive director is not working today. Or they put him/her on meds ;)

Holmes said...

I think Reod's audition is going well. Cameras seem to follow his lead, thankfully.

The Loose Wheel said...

LOVE that toyota commercial

Martin Vincent said...

@David - It's a different deal though, Cajun was only on the car because Terry Cook was driving in both the Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series that weekend. Cajun is Cook's sponsor in Trucks.

In this case, SFP is totally unrelated to MSRP Motorsports or Dave Blaney. They may have made a deal with Cardinal Motorsports to run their backup car and run the whole race if Sellers failed to qualify. As per Peyton's website, the sponsor was "hosting a pre-race event with Sellers at Growmark in nearby Caledonia, NY" and they must have a hospitality tent at the track.

Anonymous said...

Ah David, you were talking about how he first got in the car. Yes that's true too.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Little easier to swallow that ticker on a road race ya know? Lots of different cameras and angles. On a superspeedway, different story.

The Loose Wheel said...

I knew Cajun was his sponsor in trucks, but they were on both cars. At some point, like when they started top 5 last week, you have to give it a go just to show a sponsor "hey, we CAN race up there, we just need help to do it every week" before someone will sign on with them. Which is the double edged sward to being a start and park. Yes, its a bridge till you can get a sponsor, but what sponsor in their right mind wants to spend that much money on a car or team that cant even finish a race?

I hope Blaney gets a good finish, good guy that deserves better then where he is at right now. If its a sponsor's even that makes sense of why they would try and run the full race then.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Vicky, I think if they would have put Rusty in, he would have decided that he had a "rocket ship" and that he could "drive his guts out" and get to the front. He would have run it out of fuel before he would have parked it no matter what the crew chief was telling him to do.

Robby Gordon needs to be parked and banned from tomorrow's race.

Look out for Toast on the track!

gotta admit that Robby makes sure hings stay exciting. You would think by now people would know better than to push his buttons.

Nice.

Or strike first and harder!

kbaskins said...

OK, Robby only needs to get in trouble if he caused that accident. I wish there was video of the event.

When a driver tries to injure another, like Robby has the last couple of weeks, he needs to have a time out for a race or two.

And we thought TNT knew drama!

Holmes said...

Every network should have one camera dedicated to Robby Gordon at all times. The Robbycam.

The broadcast talent has lost all objectivity when it comes to the Kyle Busch story... over and over, the punk can do no wrong in their eyes.

Isn't that a little harsh?

Anonymous said...

Busch's crew chief calls Ambrose's move in the Bus Stop "cheap"? What world does this guy live in, because it ain't ours!

Steve L. said...

I don't think it's too harsh, I get tired too with all the announcers covering up everything Kyle does as if he can do no wrong.

Yay Joey!

"You can't fix stupid...".

Love it. :-)

Kenny wallace was right there with Robby and Joey. Will be interesting to hear what he says about it tomorrow.

Joey & you can't fix stupid - I love it.

Robbie needs a time out to calm down, if anyone raced him like that he'd have fits

The Loose Wheel said...

Marcos forced it there. If he gets hit it will be earned in my eyes. If he doesnt, he got a break

Holmes said...

This group of guys aren't nearly as bad concerning Kylemania as some others have been, but yeah, Kylemania could go away.

He's been drinking the Kyle Kool-Aid.

Holmes said...

If Marcos Ambrose doesn't race for position, he loses respect in the eyes of all his competitors.

Vicky D said...

Great shots of Carl & Kyle. Go Ambrose!

The Loose Wheel said...

That was impressive what Kyle did to pass Carl

Charlie said...

Any of you that use the radio, ever turn it on for this race?
Good Stuff in the booth.

Either we hear why Kyle did a great job, or why Kyle was wronged, or why Kyle deserves to be up front.

Contrarily, notice that when Kyle blows it or gets passed, the crowds go ballistic with joy.

I guess that's what matters.

Anonymous said...

With two laps to go, we're watching Kyle highlights?

Vicky D said...

Congrats Marcos.

Daly Planet Editor said...

And ESPN ends the day by missing the Kyle and Marcos after the checkers and not watching the race across the finish line.

Patrick said...

the most shocking thing is this: #91 finishes 13th.

Charlie said...

In car camera when the other cars are finishing, Sad.

w00t! w00t! Congratulations Marcos, Dot and all the Tasmanian Devil fans w00t! w00t!

The Loose Wheel said...

nice job wrecking the car doing the burnout marcos

Anonymous said...

I guess only 6 cars finished the race. Then cut to Marcos & crew celebrating. Followed by a look at possible drama between the 18 & 47 & more possible 'angry words'. Same old network. A play-by-play change can only fix so much.

MikeC said...

That in-car served no point....you really couldn't see Marcos celebrating.

364 days later, Ambrose wins again in NW at the Glen. Wow.
