Live Blogging The Nationwide Series From Montreal (2PM ET - ESPN2)

There should be an opportunity for a very interesting pre-race show from the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal today.

The field for this event normally contains some Canadian drivers, but this year the list is even more international. Familiar names like Max Papis, Patrick Carpentier and Jaques Villeneuve are in the field. Also racing Sunday are Jean Francois Dumoulin, Alex Tagliani and Antonio Perez.

On the American side, Jeffrey Earnhardt is back as is Brad's brother Brian Keselowski. Familiar road course ringers include Boris Said, Ron Fellows and Andy Lally. It should be a challenge for ESPN to get the fans up to speed on the line-up.

Marty Reid will call the play-by-play with Rusty Wallace and Andy Petree alongside. No real indication of why Randy LaJoie is not on the telecast and that is a shame. LaJoie is closely identified with this series and works very well with Wallace and Reid. LaJoie provides the fun with his comments and that will no doubt be missed on this telecast.

Dave Burns is on pit road with Jamie Little and Shannon Spake. Burns will probably be hosting the pre-race show as he has in the past for these stand-alone races. In many ways, having the host roaming pit road is more effective than three men in suits sitting in an infield studio.

This road course has seen its share of TV adventures. From the rain tire debacle to the Robby Gordon vs. Marcos Ambrose slam-fest, the track seems to make for tight tempers whatever the weather.

The challenge for ESPN's crew is to keep the leaders updated while searching for the best racing on the track. Unlike an oval where the director can keep one designated camera on the leaders at all times, a road course requires keeping track of multiple cars while continuing to cut cameras constantly.

The use of in-car cameras has been a huge issue since ESPN took over the Sprint Cup Series. It's almost as if the network has discovered this technology for the first time. In a recent race, the director actually cut to an in-car camera angle in the middle of a high speed crash on a superspeedway. Viewers saw nothing but smoke and blurred images.

In Montreal, the TV team will have a new challenge. The director must first show the cars and establish their position in the race and on the track before cutting in-car or the TV viewers will have no point of reference. This is not Watkins Glen, where familiar turns are easy to identify even from the in-car angle.

The weather is a 30% chance of showers with a high of 70 degrees. Looks like this may be a solid road course race for TV after all. The diversity of the field may lead to some outstanding racing and that is exactly what the Nationwide Series needs right now.

This post will serve to host your comments before, during and after the Montreal race on ESPN2. To add your opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thank you for taking the time to stop by.

Steven Wallace...why nepotism doesn't work

glenc1 said...

I watched the Grandam race yesterday. I don't remember being bothered by in car and bumper cams. It is narrow and it makes it a challenge, I can see, but all road courses have those issues. even now, under caution, you can see the options open to them....and it's not from inside or underneath.

The Loose Wheel said...

This is why I don't like ending on wets. You can get a solid day, then get caught in a silly mess late like some guys have had and lose a ton of points.

Lets face facts, Helton pretty much said without saying Cup guys won't run in the rain because of what is at stake with the Chase and over a $5 million dollar championship share.

Andrew said...

@Anon 6:30 - And if it were a road course issue, which I can easily see, there wouldn't be nearly as much negativity posted. But it's the same problems, week in and week out, on every single type and length of track. The directors are not choosing good shots. In-car cameras and bumper cams do not work while cars are racing side-by-side. Tight shots of cars cause us to miss action happening around those cars that would be seen in wide shots. And pit stops should not be showing the helmet cams on the first time through.

TV guy, where you been for the last three years?

Drop me an email or google insider-racing+new+john+daly.

We know the deal from top to bottom and are in direct contact with all the NASCAR TV partners on a regular basis.

Emailing with SPEED right now about next week in Atlanta.

Who is producing for ESPN today?

pookis said...

Yup, its partly cloudy here, doesnt look to threatening for a while. Just want these lengthy cautions and race to be over. And I am also in the compound. Lol.

Anonymous said...

David: The F1 guys have even more at stake and they are real drivers, run in the wets.

Go Marcos! Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! Oye, Oye, Oye!

Sophia said...

yes the end of the IRL last night was some of the best racing and camera work I'd seen on the final laps...3 wide in Open Wheel? Nail biter.

:)

bevo said...

Hope this puts an end to the idea of racing in the rain.

Jimbacca said...

Cautions are entirely too long. To the point you lose track of what it was for in the first place.

As far as cameras. My question is this. Who controls the zoom? Alot of the shots would start out good then start zooming in. Then you have zooming in after zooming in shot of an empty track.

Daly Planet Editor said...

oops insider+racing+new+john+daly.

Love my laptop....

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anyone smell another caution flag?

glenc1 said...

all Rusty can think about is how much money it's going to cost him...it's kinda getting old!

The Loose Wheel said...

Annon, they also have twice (or more) the downforce, half the weight, MUCH lower COG, run road courses week in and week out, in comparison to Cup tires have wider tires in comparison to width/weight of car.

They are two totally different types of racing and really shouldn't be compared. If F1 ran an oval once in awhile maybe they'd get compared to IRL or NASCAR with their oval or lack thereof oval skills...

Somebody needs to tell Steven to hit the pace car.

Anonymous said...

Man, someone needs to pull Steven Wallace off the track. That kid needs to be black flagged, big time

Anonymous said...

edwards and bush, no love there

Andrew said...

Can we just call the race now and declare Ambrose the victor? Might save a few teams some money not having to repair damage from wrecks.

A REAL TV guy...seriously said...

What do you mean where have I been the last 3 years? Ive been working Nascar races every week. Or are you implying I should know something that I dont. As for the producer, Im naming names, but he does NHRA and did cart and other road courses. I could care less to btw, if noone believes i work for the tv crew. All I have to say is I got here on Tuesday, and work began wed. And the Petty Experience really delayed us setting up.

kbaskins said...

Crap! I was hoping this would stay green.

This has been a disastor. At least 3 wrecks a lap.

Anonymous said...

Steven Wallace---The Human Chicane. He's definitely NOT a road course ringer.

Vicky D said...

Stephen again????

How did the State Fair demolition derby get on TV?

The Loose Wheel said...

TV guy, i think he means why havent you posted the last 3 years.

Not like you just appeared in the universe from thin air.

The Loose Wheel said...

Who was calling for wet tires again?

Guys I have to leave for work. Sorry. Will catch the end on MRN but must get off here.

Take care all.

Patrick said...

Maybe Steven should opted for the 3-hour energy. I don't know if the rest of the runners can take his full 5 hours

Andrew said...

Does anyone else feel like we've gone back in time to the 2008 Brickyard? Can't run more than 10 laps at a time (now not even 1/10th of a lap before someone spins) and the announcers trying to tell us how this carnage is actually a great thing?

Sean said...

Sometimes I wonder what Steven is thinking

Steve L. said...

Nothing like seeing the wrecks AFTER the fact in replays... UG..

Daly Planet Editor said...

TV guy,

Relax man. We started this blog to follow the new TV contract that began in 2007.

We have followed every single race, TV series and special event.

No one had any idea how all this would pan out and it's been fun to watch.

If you want to offer your opinion on the race telecast today, you are in the right place.

The Loose Wheel said...

Leff must have hit the kill switch because tire must have been going down and brakes might not have been working that well.

Andrew said...

@Sean - Steven thinks?

Sophia said...

see ya David!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Man, I wish we had race highlights to show.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Later David.

A real real tv guy, believe me said...

Ive posted before, believe me. Its just sad how everone here just bitches. You guys would rather bitch and blog than watch a race, or listen to it, or seperate yourselves, and go outside for a while. I dont think 99% of you know how much work goes into this stuff. How about when something is good, you never hear about it, because your so hateful, you cant see it.

Anonymous said...

"I've never seen nothing like this in a long time."

Think about that pearl of wisdom from one Rusty Wallace

Anonymous said...

I'm a TV race technician also, let's all just chill and watch the finish....

Anonymous said...

You would think if that much work went into it, it wouldn't be as bad.

Steve L. said...

I guess he missed the TNT races, didn't he?

Andrew said...

@Steve - Or even the FOX races, where our main complaint was Digger.

The Loose Wheel said...

Last one:

TV I can only imagine and appreciate the work everyone does. At the same time however, criticism should be taken in stride. Efforts have not been made to correct glaring issues it seems and when we get the exact same product week in and week out, while you guys are working your butts off to bring it to us, it gives a preception that you DONT CARE. That is where our frustration and "b***hing" comes from.

TNT made adjustments that have worked. FOX listens and makes changes when they realize they have problems. Wish your network would do the same more quickly then they do.

That is all.

SalB said...

I'm biting my tongue. I'm afraid if I get started....

After all, we're just fans, what do we know, right?

Anonymous said...

as a TV tech I have to agree, Digger is horrible!

Sophia said...

the TNT was a love fest here for 6 weeks indeed.

Least for me.

RB was great.

Booth was great.

Camera Direction?

PRICELESS!

xoxo Mike Wells

:)

Daly Planet Editor said...

dude, that is hilarious. TDP readers come from all over the country and are all ages and backgrounds.

The one thing they have in common is they love NASCAR.

We yelled at Fox about Digger and loved the TNT coverage with Mike Wells.

No one made ESPN's director use in-cars and close-ups to the point where you can't even tell what race you are watching.

If you are a tech, that's great. Go talk to Neil or Shifty after the race and tell them about our comments. Got it?

Sophia said...

longest caution laps in history aren't they?

bevo said...

Actually plenty of us end up listening to the Fox and ESPN races on MRN or PRN. Many of the audience apparently also go outside during races if you look at the ratings.

Look at the comments from the Indy NW race for plenty of praise for an ESPN production.

Anonymous said...

JD you are soooo right! Let's watch the end of this....

kbaskins said...

He must have also missed the TNT races, where we absolutely slobbered over how awesome the coverage was.

I guess the tv guy only reads TDP during the ESPN portion of the season. That's his problem. He missed all the fawning we did this summer.

YES! My boy wins!

I feel really really really bad for Marcos though. I really like him too.

Dang, what a finish!

--KarenB

Sophia said...

what is the crash?

I AM SICK of Carl and Kyle show but ...sheesh

guess Marcos did lose it

SalB said...

OMG! Don't believe Ambrose made a mistake on the last corner! What a shame.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Eli did a great job back in the TNN days, he certainly is a character.

Anonymous said...

Darn..it!...I...was..so..hoping..Marcos...would..have..won!

Congratulations...Cousin..Carl

Labbie said...

Poor Marcos!!!:(

Anonymous said...

Edwards did no deserve this win. Edwards caused that big wreck and then gets nothing but a win for it. Why didn't they throw the yellow at the end?

Vicky D said...

Hid all the sharp objects from Dot!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Get a camera on Steven Wallace. That should be interesting.

Patrick said...

Unbelievable. Really thought Ambrose deserved that one. Congrats to Carl for capitalizing. Who finished after Ranger?

SalB said...

Kes finished 5th. good finish for a long day. Lots if interesting drivers in the top 20!

Vicky D said...

Congrats to Carl & team.

kbaskins said...

Actually, in spite of being an Edwards fan, I would have been OK with Marcos winning too. If for no other reason than Carl screwed up his day yesterday.

You have got to be kidding me! TSN just switched to SportCentre at the top of the hour, right when Carl was stopping his car! What kind of crap is this?

--KarenB

Newracefan said...

I'm behind and not too sure I even want to watch the end. How disappointing for Marcos.

Sophia said...

WOW! Marcos too upset to talk..poor guy.

That was PAINFUL for him

Anonymous said...

I don't know how Rusty can sit there and watch his son do nothing but play demo derby. Steven is an embarrassment.

Anonymous said...

Why would they have thrown the caution? Everybody was out of the way and moving.

I think almost everybody caused a wreck out there today... haha

kbaskins said...

I hate TSN! You guys think ESPN is crap...

That STINKS about your canada station. boo hiss

Patrick said...

Wow! I've NEVER seen Marcos act that way. He is really pissed at himself.

glenc1 said...

You know, if it was Kyle Busch I'd be griping, but that's because it's common for him...but Marcos had to be so disappointed.

Those fans are cool. They're still yelling & singing.

Dot said...

Well dang it. Dan doesn't know so we'll still watch.

From the comments, I doubt NN will race in the rain again. I want to see the wreck fest so I'm glad no one got hurt.

Daly Planet Editor said...

I had an IT guy once working on my PC, and he got so fed up with the escape key not working that he pulled the plug, threw it in the garbage and went to get me a new one right on the spot. One of those pressure air sprayers might loosen it up too.
