Early Friday NASCAR TV From LMS

Let's offer a post for comments on the early Friday TV coverage from SPEED and ESPN2. The full TV schedule is on the right side of the main page.

This should be a good couple of hours leading up to the Nationwide Series race. Without Chasers and on a cool and very fast track, the Friday race could wind up being the highlight of the weekend.

Just a quick note, Marty Reid will be filling in for Jerry Punch on the Happy Hour coverage for the Sprint Cup Series tonight. Punch has a scheduled off night for a function in the area.

We will be live blogging the Nationwide Series race tonight, but in the meantime please feel free to add your TV-related comments on this post. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks.

DJ has been very quiet during NW qualifying and I've heard AP speaking up on several occasions with his opinion so he's really watching the cars. Don't know what DJ's job is to just be silent, I guess.

Not a bad show for qualifying. But it's pretty easy to do a show like that.

Hey, I wrote this to JD, but did all of you read in USA Today that HBO will be doing a 4 part show on Jimmie Johnson starting in January? It's supposed to be a 24/7 access special about the guy, which they will start filming in December and will start in late January. All I can say is "Boring"! JJ went to HBO himself and suggested the show. OK, JJ may be a nice guy and he's probably going to win his fourth straight Cup, but other than his ardent fans, who wants to watch a show on JJ, robo-driver? At least pick a guy who's got an interesting personality.

Got NN on now. I can tell you that I just watched most of Speed's coverage of practice. Lots of showing cars going around the track or in the garage stuff. However, when HH comes up on BSPN, I WILL not seeing lots of cars going around on the track, but fun stuff like driver's dogs & their handwriting analyzed. Won't that be special? And if I'm wrong, I will backtrack..don't think I'll have to tho.

I just watched yesterday's NASCAR Now, and let me just say: DJ Kopp deserves an Emmy! Not only are his segments always unique and super-informative, but he always does the entire thing in ONE TAKE! At the rate he's talking, and with 1-2 minutes to fill, that is no easy task. I am sure he has a blooper reel a mile long but that he is able to week after week crank out these perfect little one-take segments is amazing.

Before you say "BORING" about the 24/7 show, you should see some of the 24/7 shows HBO has done about boxers. Most all of those shows are really amazing, and even if you don't like JJ, the 24/7 show is guaranteed to be a look into the sport that you've never seen before. There is no way HBO has spent the last two years building up the 24/7 brand as exciting, interesting, intense documentary filmmaking only for them to water-down the brand for a Jimmie Johnson commercial. I think it will be a really cool all-access look at his life, and I can't wait for it - even though I root for the Gibbs cars.

While previous shows on HBO's 24/7 may have been good, the basic premise is that you have to start with an interesting personality, which Johnson is not. Might be a good driver, and a nice person, but his personality is akin to watching paint dry. And seeing that they're filming in December and January, when nothing Nascar is going on as far as the drivers are concerned (no testing or anything like that means a two month vacation), what can they really show that will be interesting?

Anon 6:25, you are assuming that all the world thinks like you. I can assure you that we don't.

Actually, I was going to post on Marty Reid's comment about how final practice was either Happy Hour or something that rhymed with that if your car wasn't very good. That says it all.

Maybe he has been told to 'tone it down'!

Interesting how they keep talking about Hendrick's current dominance but don't talk about how Roush was pretty much doing the same thing just a couple years ago and is why we have the four-team limit now.

What function is JP attending?

I would recommend a reformat and OS reinstall. It always speeds things up around here.

I'm in agreement with that statement, Andrew. With NASCAR taking JJ's car home with them every weekend and keeping it long enough he can't run it in two consecutive races, I thought that would handicap him a little but I guess not.

I wonder if JJ will do any golf cart canopy surfing on his HBO special? If he intends to demonstrate he is not robo-driver this show may be entertaining. I doubt it.

@ dead horse 6:53, you're killing me.

I'll be late to the party tonight. Hold you comments until I sign in, kidding.

See you about 5:30/8:30ish.

Oh, OK, I remember reading about that on here earlier this year. Duh on me.

I, for one, thinks Marty is doing a great job of practice and AP seems to still be giving good input and DJ's talking a little bit more, although I find some of his comments don't make sense. These different paint schemes tonight are great, aren't they. Oh my goodness, Tim is busy tonight. Can't wait for this practice to be over and the NW race to start.

I hope TB meets all his contractual obligations by the end of the evening and is sent home for the rest of the weekend. I like TB and recognize his accomplishments but he is in the wrong role here. It's not like ESPN hasn't ever done that before.
