Live Blogging Both Saturday Races (SPEED and ESPN2)

Update: Both NASCAR races are live at the same time, we are using the comments section of this post to update both.

The rain delays at Martinsville, VA began with Sprint Cup practice and will continue with the Camping World Truck Series. SPEED is scheduled for the pre-race at 12:30PM and the live race thirty minutes later.

Krista Voda is going to start the day with The Setup and then we will see what SPEED decides to do when the race is delayed. Rick Allen, Phil Parsons and Michael Waltrip are waiting to call the race. Adam Alexander and Ray Dunlap are the pit reporters.

Martinsville is a great track for the trucks with good close racing and lots of double-file runs through the corners. SPEED keep the coverage simple and works hard to keep the perspective ahead of the racing.

SPEED has no live programming today after the scheduled truck race, so the network will have a window until sunset to stay available and get it in. We will continually update the status of the event in the comments section and on the front page.

This post will serve to host your comments on the TV coverage of the Camping World Truck Series from Martinsville. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks for dropping by.

Thanks to ESPN's Ryan McGee for the picture.

The booth is doing a good job keeping on top of all the action and telling the story of the race. Unlike last week where everyone got it wrong.

Dot said...

Well, we know what happened to Eddie this time.

The Loose Wheel said...

Dash 4 Cash is a program involving all drivers that run the full Nationwide schedule. It consists of 4 races which are NW standalone events, 25 grand to whomever wins the race, if no one wins, it rolls over to the next race. No one won the first 2, Brad K. won Iowa and earned 75k. There is also a running points total of the 4 races and whomever scores the most points in all 4 earns an additional 50k bonus.

Since Kyle and Carl run the full NW schedule they are eligible. Only ones who are contenders that arent are Reuti and Kenseth

Tripp said...

@dot... I still don't actually. All I saw was Eddie sideways on the track and Darnell piled into him.

Tripp said...

@JD... Can they do that since they don't have the infield studio? Doesn't Allen normally do that?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Little lost right now, hope they clear up how a car is stopped in the middle of the backstretch under green.

Dot said...

Here's the highlight reel.

Anonymous said...

Ty David, again you have the answer, how do you do that? ;)

The Loose Wheel said...

Recap.

Tripp said...

OK... I guess they can do it without Allen.

The Loose Wheel said...

Ri, magic. And an awful lot of free time. lol

Unknown said...

@Johnathan - No Happy Hour broadcast. All Cup practices were canceled. ESPN shouldn't have to cut the post race AT all. They have til 7:30.

Wow! A slight recap. How about a recap of ALL the cautions?

Daly Planet Editor said...

I am going to update the Mayfield story and also preview the Cup race tomorrow with new columns tonight shortly after this race is over.

Mayfield is slinging bombs again.

bevo said...

I'm back in. Got a new netbook to play with and this is the first post using it. Hopefully I can get a good connection at Texas in two weeks and do some live posts from the Truck race while yall watch on tv

NorCalFan said...

Just read on several twitter sites that both Cup practices this morning were cancelled due to rain. What was to have be shown later today was to be tape-delayed. Bummer.

Dot said...

Maybe Kez thought the 11 car was Hamlin.

Glenn said...

I sure hate to admit this, but I'm actually enjoying the Nationwide race broadcast on ESPN.
I have heard so many driver names I can't remember them, I think the pitroad "persons" have given relevant information,(it seemed to fit the time), announcers that are watching the race AND know what they should say,(not what is in the "script".
This also must be a "B" team crew behind the cameras, so here's an "atta-boy-girl" for all you too.

(and no i don't think it's the perfect broadcast but it ranks up near the top)

Anonymous said...

awwww

Unknown said...

What is Rusty talking about new tires? I thought that the leaders stayed out.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Never put the window net down. Did ESPN not see that??

Anonymous said...

i think it was kevin lepage

Anonymous said...

thank god for the safer barriers

Vicky D said...

Hard hit for Eric glad he looks ok except favoring that ankle.

Charlie said...

With what we have usually watching on Espn it wouldn't take much to make it better.

The Loose Wheel said...

Eric sure did drill that wall. He is quite under the weather today so that firesuit may need a run to the cleaners. =\

I missed what happened with Keselowski and Bliss

brad said...

that was a nasty hit Mclure took.

Dot said...

@ Glenn, as in the past, good NW coverage, bad CUP coverage. Enjoy it while you can.

I hope Eric is OK.

Vicky D said...

Enjoyed that ESPN basketball commercial.

Anonymous said...

@ the awww was for Kenny and his blown tire. he had a good qual

The Loose Wheel said...

Thank you Marty for crediting open wheel racing for the SAFER.

great thing to have. Mikey sure was right when he said "Someday we will race and look back then say 'I can't believe we raced without soft walls.'"

Dot said...

Wow, 40% less body impact. To think, we could be seeing a dead driver right now. Love the safer barriers.

Daly Planet Editor said...

That could have been huge.

Newracefan said...

Well just starting to watch the NW race and have added 2 hours to the recording looks like I'm going to need it. Hope Eric is OK

The Loose Wheel said...

So its confirmed Keller is leaving the 27? I had heard he was open to look for a new ride since they hadn't had sponsorship but I imagine that with their new partnership he might stay and at least try to wait it out through the first few races.

That combination with Keller and Baker-Curb has been a good duo, would love to see it continue.

Think Bliss is making a strong case to CJM to keep him for 2010?

glenc1 said...

David, I had the same reaction to Marty's comments. NASCAR was very late to the party, not a pioneer. And it was the tracks that put them in, I don't think NASCAR had much say about that, did they (although presumably they eventually encouraged it.)

Anonymous said...

Brewer in Martinsville!

I reassert a previous point, why not have Brewer in the studio known as the Home Depot garage back in Bristol, CT?

glenc1 said...

btw, I just stopped in, but without reading 235 comments, is anyone else's sound cutting out intermittently?

bevo said...

Try this again... What a difference it makes having a real professional reporting from the pits. Jack Arute has been missed.

Dot said...

@glenc1, yes.

The Loose Wheel said...

glen, I credit open wheel because they developed it. NASCAR went and tested it for stock cars since there was doubt it would hold due to the increased mass of a full bodied stock car. It held, NASCAR I am sure encouraged several tracks to install it, plus any new tracks they go to are required to have it that will host CWTS, NW or SCS. Also, the France's have interest in ISC whom owns several tracks. =)

Bires drove it the whole way. Looks like a 2007 repeat...

Tripp said...

@glenn... Yes. It's done it a few times.

@all... Bires didn't lift when he was into Alguire. Kinda did it to himself.

bevo said...

@glen- Yep, DirecTV SD

Dot said...

YAY, Eric.

The Loose Wheel said...

Randy: HUGE advocate for safer race car drivers

TexasRaceLady said...

In fact, the cutting in and out is beginning to get annoying.

Great news about Eric.

Vicky D said...

Rusty has said "right now" so many times today.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Glen, looks like it is fixed...for now.

Dot said...

Randy is giving away secrets about wrecking drivers.

glenc1 said...

thanks bevo & TRL...I'm on DISH. Maybe some interference at the track or something.

The Loose Wheel said...

Dot, I doubt Randy would say wrecking Buckshot qualifies as a "driver" ;)

LOL

The Loose Wheel said...

SD cable here, sound was intermittent.

Tripp said...

@Dot... When has Randy ever held anything back? (grin) His candor is one of the things I like most about him. He was doing it way back on the old "Inside Busch Series" show.

Glenn said...

I'm glad to know it's not my sound, it goes completly silent.
To bad it couldn't happen when R**** repeats what R**** says, then this might be a perfect broadcast. (hehehehehe)

Tripp said...

Nice update on Gonzo. Imagine him running on the bottom. (grin)

Dot said...

@ David, funny.

@ Tripp, that's why I like him too.

Glenn said...

Opps, I forgot about that garage guy who tells us how to turn a screw.
(not necessarly the guy, just the crap he has to say and waste time, mostly waste time)

Anonymous said...

glenc1 -

I've got Comcast in Seattle ... But, I've had the sound problems on espn2 / SPEED / Universal Sports today ...

Sun spots?? Solar flares??

Tripp said...

Marty: "Spraying for mosquitoes". That's bloody funny.

Dot said...

See? Keller got cursed.

Anonymous said...

wow that was a tough choice, smoke on the track, or interview the guy who knocked down the wall. I'm glad they stayed with Eric

Daly Planet Editor said...

Looks like Marty could not see that Eric McClure's windown net was still up from his position in the TV booth.

That makes a lot more sense as to why they kept talking and laughing.

Dot said...

Rusty, Rusty, Rusty. Learn the names of the drivers. I can't even type what he made DiBenedetto sound like.

Vicky D said...

Plus Randy keeps track of a lot of the up-and-comers in the NW series and mentions them during the race. Guess they don't have a "script" for this race.

Anonymous said...

I wish Disney would hire Arute & the other guy to replace the blonde girls & BD ...

Tripp said...

@6p... Roger THAT!

Tripp said...

Gonzo to the lead. Go Brennie!

Anonymous said...

VickyD - The script for this race ONLY says "lots of cautions / wrecks" ...

Can we force espn to make Kyle the IRR every week???

glenc1 said...

Randy & Marty have been in rare form today...actually having fun, imagine that. this has been pretty good today.

The Loose Wheel said...

Uncle Brennie!

Anonymous said...

well what do you know...the bottomline ticker has broke down...for once we get to see a nascar race with no score ticker on the bottom of the screen

The Loose Wheel said...

I don't think its enough time..

What the heck?! Paper?!

LMAO Randy! "Binoculars"

Dot said...

Dang it. I thought Steven would bring out the caution, just for the irony.

TexasRaceLady said...

Paper???

Oh, well. *sigh*

Unknown said...

I feel your pain Marty. Please don't tell me it's a piece of paper.

Dot said...

@ Tia, don't we wish.

Vicky D said...

Jack Arute and Rick Buhl (s?) are great pit reporters. Why can't we have this same group every NW race?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anyone think this is going to go green the rest of the way???

The Loose Wheel said...

Dot, not all of us hope that...

haha

The Loose Wheel said...

Vicky, Rick as a weekday job here in Phoenix as a new anchor

The Loose Wheel said...

news*

Anonymous said...

@Vicky becareful what you ask for, we might get it and then there would be NO HOPE for cup races ugh!

Dot said...

@ David, sorry. xoxo

Anonymous said...

Jack is really good, but he also has all kinds of things on his plate that would preclude him from being a regular.

In fact, he's leaving ESPN at the end of the year to do all sorts of stuff for Verus in semi-retirement.

The Loose Wheel said...

Thank you Mr. Edwards. Brightened my day.

Dot said...

Kez, again?

Vicky D said...

Geesh Randy saw that coming.

The Loose Wheel said...

At least Brad K is an equal opportunist offender.

Might Denny have been a bit accurate..?

Tripp said...

88's hit everything but the hotdog stand today.

Anonymous said...

@tripp

give him time hes talented dontcha know

Dot said...

@ Tripp, maybe he did. You know how BSPN doesn't show us everything.

@ David, could be.

Anonymous said...

Pink cars = JINX

Sean said...

Keselowski wrecking some more people, nothing new there

Tripp said...

@ri88girl... He's exhibiting one "special" talent today.

Sally said...

It's like Brad wants to be the kyle Busch of the Nationwide series.

Tripp said...

@Dot... That's where the next to last caution came from. That paper was a really big hotdog wrapper.

Vicky D said...

Similar finish when Randy won his last Busch race. He was running 3rd with 2 laps or so to go and the 2 cars in front of him spun and he squirted through and won the race.

The Loose Wheel said...

JGR hangs all the #11's bodies, gives them some tech support. Would be good to see Bliss pull it off. I like Annet's gamble though

Anonymous said...

at least steven w had the decency to look sheepish when he did sh*t like that. Not brad pump up the volume.

Sally said...

Ya gotta love a move like that!

TexasRaceLady said...

Did anyone else hear what Rusty said?

"He's got the same amount of tires on his tires as Bliss."

Dot said...

Karma for Kez coming up?

The Loose Wheel said...

If someone doesnt wreck the 88 I'd be shocked.

That last move was clean, but just been far too an eventful day and it has to be wearing some guys down

Anonymous said...

is that Rusty's fist Yogi-ism?

Vicky D said...

I certainly want to see a full time/regular NW driver instead of a cup driver win this race.

Sean said...

Hopefully Kyle wrecks Brad right now

Dot said...

@ VickyD, ditto.

Dot said...

Think RWI loses 2 cars at the end?

The Loose Wheel said...

Bliss gonna have 1 last shot at em

Anonymous said...

well Rusty took that well, good for him

Vicky D said...

Write another check Rusty!

Anonymous said...

it six to go when is ESPN's off time did you say, 7:30? sure we'll be done and into post race?

Anonymous said...

Ha, did ya catch when RW said, If he wants to throw his helmet this week, let 'em!

Dot said...

Good finish.

Anonymous said...

OMG what a race, KB tried to boot him I like it!!!!!!

Sally said...

Hell of a job hanging on to that car! Glad a Nationwide regular won it...and the big bucks.

The Loose Wheel said...

Man, Kyle tried.

Brad played some restart games there late but I cant argue with his last 13 laps. Just before that though...

Can't blame Steve Wallace either. Frustrating.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Much better TV than we will probably see tomorrow.

Good pit reporters. Thanks to Jack Arute who hung in there while sick.

Understand now why Marty did not see the Eric McClure window net deal.

Good race!

Anonymous said...

So they DON'T show us what happened between Stephen & Matt ?!?!?

Dot said...

Uh oh. Rusty was quiet. Hope we see a replay.

Weed back to his old ways.

Vicky D said...

What a nice guy Kyle is! He didn't want to spin him out. Glad BK beat KB.

Sean said...

Kyle could've wrecked Brad if he wanted to, class move by Shrub right there. Brad deserved to be wrecked after the way he was driving that race

Sally said...

I like Randy pointing out that having a bushwacker punt a full timer is uncalled for. Kyle really doesn't like ti when another driver pushes as hard as he does, does he?

Sean said...

It's safe to say now that Brad wrecks more people than Kyle

The Loose Wheel said...

So Brad half-heartedly appologizes....

-sigh-

Great effort by ESPN today though!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Rick did a good VL interview.

The Loose Wheel said...

LOVE that question by Marty Reid!!! THATS what a PxP guy SHOULD do!

Sean said...

The ESPN 'B' team is more enjoyable than the 'A' team

Tripp said...

Again, ESPN shows themselves how a race should be covered. Great stuff from the booth, cameras and truck. In-cars used when it was appropriate and some good, wider shots. Now you all can watch them go over to the dark side tomorrow. I won't be there.

Two other things: Kyle bumping Kez in turn 4 was classic Earnhardt Sr.

Also, good on my boy Eddie Mac. Drives to 22nd in his first Nationwide race after being involved in not one, but three wrecks. They should be proud.

The Loose Wheel said...

JD, Jamie and Shannon need to take note! That is how you interview!

PammH said...

Sounds like they are going to dump coverage very soon-that's a shame. LOVE these 3 in the booth!

Anonymous said...

seems like NASCAR as a world is riding a good wave, lets hope it doesn't end with a crash landing tomorrow. It really seemed like everyone was on it form the tv to the truck to the officials to drivers everyone what a great day of racing. Almost worth a whole half season of lousy coverage...almost

Beating A Dead Horse said...

ri88girl said...

"is that Rusty's fist Yogi-ism?"

Rusty Berra or Yogi Wallace?

Sean said...

"Two other things: Kyle bumping Kez in turn 4 was classic Earnhardt Sr."

I would agree with that. Keselowski better watch his back though the next couple races, he's got a lot of guys itching to wreck him.

Anonymous said...

They do all kinds of interviews ... but didn't show the incident on pit road with Stephen & Matt ...

The Loose Wheel said...

Last Elvis trophy as well.

Pretty good lil short track, wish we had more of em!

Dot said...

I'm behind. Graphic showing and Marty talking about tickets for a race at TX on Oct 24th. Huh?

Dot said...

No banquet for RWI this year.

glenc1 said...

the only thing that concerns me about Brad's interviews is that he seems unaware (or really doesn't give a crap) about the consequences of his actions. Teams trying to get/retain sponsors, drivers 'auditioning' for rides...guys potentially getting injured. I like Brad's honesty, and I think he means what he says about the fans. But I think maybe that attitude will be adjusted over time when he has a chance to see some bad stuff. Like when he gets in that 12, lol.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Thanks again for hanging in there with all the crazy rain stuff today.

Be back to semi-normal tomorrow with live race blog and two new posts later tonight for your comments.

9AM - Mayfield on OTL
10AM - NASCAR Now on ESPN2
11AM - RaceDay on SPEED
1PM - Cup pre-race on ABC

Unknown said...

@glenc1 - He's aware. I read that Jr. took him aside after Dover and the incident with Hamlin and told him he needs to calm down and back off a bit. Kez's response was leave me alone, it's my deal.

Decent job by the broadcast from what I paid attention to. Not much was made of the Cup guys having to come through the field (but I did miss the beginning due to the truck race) which was a good thing. If it were JP, every time a Cup driver was mentioned he would also add that they started in the back.

glenc1 said...

so Melissa, you're voting for the 'he doesn't give a crap' choice, lol. But I still think as he sees some stuff close up (and, as they all do 'grows up') he'll take things more seriously. Someone compared him to Big E, and I think that happened to him too.

Sophia said...

Hmm...I guess today's telecast was ok? I did not even try to stick with it...SPEED was ok but more in car/bumper cams than normal earlier..so I decided to SKIP BSPN.

Will probably do the same tomorrow...just not worth the aggravation.

So I went for short ride to look at gorgeous tree color.

And mood is better than after watching a race.

and you all can bet TOMORROW will not be as good as today.

BUT what was the finish line shot today in this race? flying heads? Only one or two cars then CChief?

REmember last year Middle series races got better at end of year..but Cup still STUNK!

:-)

The Loose Wheel said...

Glen I am with you.

He may be alert to it, but it hasn't registered in his head. I still think he has a humongous chip on his shoulder especially after that deal at Charlotte last May and he has amped it up this year. I credit him for not rolling over on anyone and giving it his all, but he has to find that equilibrium between giving it his all and respecting his competitors.

He will find it, hopefully by season's end. Might be a school of hard knocks when he goes full time next year...

Only caught the last 2/3rds of the NW race today but REALLY felt like ESPN had a solid effort. Probably the best effort since ORP in my opinion.

Sicklajoie said...

I cannot WAIT till Brad goes to Cup next year. He's got half the field lined up already waiting to give him a taste of his own medicine. Let's see how well he can take it since he seems to dish it out so well.

Dot said...

Re: Brad. Didn't Jr have a talk with him before? May be time for another one.

Again, good coverage today.

Jonathan said...

it was good cause of the combination of the 3, there all down to earth when there together! Could it be this race was much better because the normal producers are in Martinsville, VA??? We had different pit reporters today, better camera shots, better everything.... Probably because it was a stand alone event on a cup weekend so it was your normal guys who produce the Sprint Cup and Nationwide races when there together??? Just a thought but I see tomorrows broadcast to be just as bad as last weekends. Remember how jacked we were at Iowa speedway when it was such a great broadcast, then the cup event stunk broadcast wise. OH well cant wait for tomorrow Sprint Cup woohoo!!

Jonathan said...

opps my bad I ment to say "Probably because it was a stand alone event on a cup weekend so it WASNT your normal guys who produce the Sprint Cup and Nationwide races when there together????"

glenc1 said...

yes, David, you said it better than I. He 'knows' but he doesn't really 'know' because he hasn't been close enough to it. Maybe if Carl had been hurt in that 'dega wreck, (not that I want that) he would have understood. But I do think when he gets to Cup he will eventually 'get it.' He's young, and this younger set might be lulled into a false sense of comfort because of all the safety features (LaJoie seats, SAFER barriers, etc.) But that didn't stop Dario F. from breaking his ankle last year. Things will still happen. I know we're digressing a little from the broadcast, but it just shows up in Brad's interviews so that's when I think of it.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Thanks again for all the great comments and for hanging in there during all the rain chaos.

See everyone on Sunday for the Cup race!
