Live Blogging The Sprint Cup Series From Talladega (12PM ET - ABC)

There is a new post up for race comments on ABC at Talladega. Thanks.

Here we go with what could be a deciding race in the Chase. Allen Bestwick has a crowd in the Infield Pit Studio for the one hour pre-race show.

Ray Evernham will join Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty as the panelists. Daugherty has a strange fascination with accidents at Talladega and this is not perhaps the best place for him to be a cheerleader.

ESPN has been in love with Jimmie Johnson since the Chase began. Trying to keep a balance between the Chasers and the racers has been a downfall of this TV coverage since the Chase began.

Talladega's truck race on Saturday showed that by using few in-car cameras and keeping the cameras wide the race can be tremendously exciting. This is the challenge for the ESPN Producer and Director, who enjoy tight shots of single cars and extensive use of the in-car cameras.

Pit stops are going to be important, but green flag stops cannot take up the entire TV screen as they have during the ESPN coverage. Split-screen is mandatory so fans can keep up with the action on the track.

Caution flag pitstops need the triple-video split to show the top three cars. Losing that effect to go full-screen for Jimmie Johnson has often caused the ESPN crew to miss the race off pit road.

Jerry Punch has to keep it exciting on every lap. Silence is not a effective way to relay to viewers what is going on in the race. Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree should be on their game, as this big track is tough for the TV crew to see and they will be jumping back and forth between the TV monitors in the booth and the view out the windows.

On pit road will be Shannon Spake, Jamie Little, Dave Burns and Vince Welch. In the Tech Garage will be Tim Brewer. Using Brewer live during the race had better be presented in a split-screen. Action happens to fast for live tech features.

This post will serve to host your comments on the ABC coverage of the Sprint Cup Series at Talladega by the ESPN TV team. To add your TV-related comment, just click on the comments button below. Thanks for stopping by, let's go racing!

If they don't reset the field after this we are all going to be confused.

my respect for newman has ebbed and waned over the years but his comments right there have moved him to the top of the pack!

Anon@4:39: do we know for a fact that the safety team didn't have a set of jaws? granted i didn't see 'em but that doesn't mean they weren't there. they don't always get taken off the emergency trucks right away in civilian life . . .

ok, i gotta hit my meeting as soon as this ends so i'll catch up later, jd!

Boy, oh boy. Nascar will have some research to do over the off-season....that wreck kind of put a kink in the works, didn't it?

Sally said...

So many cars low on fuel, so we have more caution laps. That helps, doesn't it? Guarantees a wild finish.

I wonder if Ryan's next stop will be the Nascar hauler for his comments?

Spider said...

Jamie, in all her brilliance never asked him what happened? BUT I am glad he got his jab in to NASCAR. He is an engineer. He knows what is wrong and showed us what NASCAR biggest fear was when they made the new rule today. They know that the rear wing is and it is just that, a wing that has the ability to push the car's rear down while going forward and--- push the rear up in the air while traveling backwards. Just like the model airplane you played with in elementary school. Oh My!

TerriSanislo said...

Jaws are dangerous....things snap off and can hit bystanders, and like red said, just move things. They did it the right way with the sawz-all.

Haus14 said...

ESPN is trying to follow TStewart into the motorhome lot during the commercial and tony's pr guy just told the cameraman to turn around!

The Loose Wheel said...

they cant reset the field because it keeps changing. guys keep running out lol

Newracefan said...

In ESPN defense they can't reset the field cars keeping running out no one knows where they are suppose to be

The Loose Wheel said...

watch the wreck

Sophia said...

person with all the numbers after your name? Get a shorter handle please ..your comment about Ryan throwing NASCAR under the bus and running over it multiple times made me LAUGH!

Thank you! :)

No Reset?!? What a confusing disastor!

yes Bravo to Ryan! Maybe they'll finally wake up but not holding my breath :(

The Loose Wheel said...

9 says he will run out

Dot said...

And there you go.

KoHoSo said...

I wonder if Mark Martin still feels lucky? :-(

Anonymous said...

Yet another car has flipped over. NASCAR has A LOT of work to do in the off season.

boyd said...

WTF

The Loose Wheel said...

blame the teams stupid enough to stay out there who knew they would run out

Anonymous said...

man is over. Jimmie Johnson is gonna win the title.

Dot said...

An Odd Was one. 33 yr old McMurray.

Dot said...

"won". Dang desk top.

Sally said...

The end of this race was a massive cluster**** with Nascar's rules.

The Loose Wheel said...

Crown Jimmie now!

Anonymous said...

Gracious! what an embarrassment!

Congratulation to Jamie though

Haus14 said...

Mark Martin, just lit up the tires and drove to the start finish line...after flipping over. unfortunately no one saw that.

Anonymous said...

All I can say is what a joke of a race - great job nascar - NOT!

Sophia said...

who is o9??

TerriSanislo said...

What a friggin' mess. I hope Nascar is satisfied.

Sally said...

Think the high center of gravity of the COT has anything to do with this? Ya think?

glenc1 said...

the irony is...I hate this stuff, but my driver won the race...

Anonymous said...

This race was so unsafe. NASCAR made it worse with the bump draft rule. I feel terrible for Mark. There was nothing the drivers could do with the box they were placed in. That said, Jamie deserved this win, and I'm happy for him.

TerriSanislo said...

People passing under caution. I bet Nascar has no clue where anyone finished. That last restart was a joke. And so was that last lap.

Sally said...

Good for jamie. He ran up front and deserved it.

Anonymous said...

NASCAR continues to embarass itself. Good win for the 26 though.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Being told MW is saying Brad K should be parked for life.

TWIN is at 8PM on SPEED.

Tracy D said...

sophia, 09 is Brad Kez

boyd said...

Wow, that was out of control. NASCAR needs to re-evaluate their rules.
I don't know much but I do know that handcuffed racing isn't what I want to see.

Haus14 said...

I believe the chase is now over...Gordon, Martin and Stewart wrecked.

Anonymous said...

the race is over and we are still talking about JJ. Who care. Show me Mark Martin driving to the finish line!

The Loose Wheel said...

guys flipped in the old cars...

Its not the car. This is plate racing with any car and any plate.

Unless they decide to race at 50 mph, guys will flip at various times.

Its not the wing, or the plate, or the COT.

Haus14 said...

of course the in the clutch moment would go to the 48....r u kidding me? How about in the clutch for the 26 He avoided all the wrecks by staying in the front.

Anonymous said...

WTF u have got to be kidding. The 48 gets the 'in the clutch moment'? Can they pander to the 48 any more?

Newracefan said...

Gotta areaa about the 48 not deserving the clutch momnet and I'm a 48 fan. McMurry yes he deserved it

Sally said...

Good lord. Now we are going to hear even more about JJ and his '4 time championship'. Sorry, he's a great driver, but I just don't feel a 10 race 'champ' is the same as one that takes an entire season. Just my opinion.

Haus14 said...

Waltrip said the 09 should be parked for life.

Anonymous said...

@Sophia--she knows it's an issue with the openID login that she uses to log on here. Six is one of her nicknames so you can call her that :)

@David--exactly unless his car doesn't start the next two races it's over :(

boyd said...

Gordons,
'glad we got to get back out and destroy the car' comment was priceless.

bozo said...

waltrip should get the clutch award, i think he saw the beginning of the spin and went down on the apron and just missed it... dale jr. did a pretty good job also if you watch on slow motion, just missed it

Anonymous said...

WHY'D they put Shannon in Victory Lane??!?!?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Don't leave yet! Our "Your Turn" post is up.

Please give us your summary of the ABC telecast today. We appreciate it and that post is one of the most read during the week.

JD

Sophia said...

yes hearing lots of negative on Brad K.

WOW. heavy comment from Waltrip there JD

HMcP said...

What the hell was that finish? Hey, looks like I'm done with this sport. I liked nothing about what was put on the track today. Motorsports will come around again, but this is not the way.

Anonymous said...

Johnson is 181 points ahead after this. The ESPN Jimmie train is only going to get worse next week. I'm so happy for Jamie though.

Anonymous said...

David - The COT was supposed to make races safer. Watching 2 cars flip like feathers in the wind within 1 hour of each other is unacceptable. There has to be a way to keep these cars on the ground. We have advanced from the old car, it is no longer an excuse.

Anonymous said...

Glad Jamie won. Can't wait to see how NA$CAR claims it was a great race

Anonymous said...

Mark Martin is playing games with Jamie. Still bitter?

Haus14 said...

Jamie to Mark, "What happened, what did you see?" Mark - "Nothing!"

TerriSanislo said...

Whoever has the pit of the driver that wins gets the Victory Lane interview.

Jamie is awful.

boyd said...

Drivers aren't giving NASCAR any kudos today. Maybe time for a new PDA like the old days.

Sophia said...

Ok..this was such a mess...I am not going to post on JD's your thoughts for a while.

Maybe they DO need to regrade Dega and take out the steep sides....

This was just too, much, and a mess of an ending.

TerriSanislo said...

And now DSPN takes their leave. What a load of crap.

Vicky D said...

Good comment from Jeff Gordon!

Anonymous said...

Mark didn't seem happy to speak there eh?

The Loose Wheel said...

Busch, the answer is clear. go 50 mph.

IDC what car you give them, if the car wants to flip it will. Look at F1, IRL, etc. Those are even more advanced cars and they STILL flip.

Its just the law of aerodynamics.

The drivers are safe and walk away. That needs to be what is noted.

bozo said...

they gave us the point standings but the not how people finished in the race...

glenc1-26 said...

David is right...they still flipped the old cars...the COT IS safer, because Newman got out safely. Old car maybe not. But I do think it's something they'll take a look at.

Sally said...

It's seldom the spectacular, tumbling wrecks where drivers get hurt. It's the wrecks where they run into something head on and stop.

DrTeplisky said...

The time that ABC/ESPN NEEDS a long post race...they get the Billy Mays Shamwow special of 8 minutes...grr. But on WIVT it went to NASCAR Angels--instead of the Shamwow special.

MikeC said...

If this holds, Johnson can virtually clinch at Phoenix....he'd only have to start the Homestead race.

Vicky D said...

And 50 year old MM is bummed.

Daly Planet Editor said...

New post is up and we are moving post race comments to that location.

Thanks,

JD
