Live Blogging The Sprint Cup Series From PIR (2:30PM - ABC)

The storyline is going to be the troubles of Jimmie Johnson at the last race. The focus is going to be on the Chase. The same questions will be posed to the same drivers. The challenge for the NASCAR on ESPN gang will be how to generate some interest on this next-to-last pre-race show.

Allen Bestwick has been the best thing that has happened to ESPN's NASCAR coverage in a very long time. Bestwick has taken the Infield Pit Studio and made it a credible and vital piece of the TV coverage for both the Nationwide and Sprint Cup Series.

Sitting alongside of Bestwick this season, Rusty Wallace has been exactly what ESPN wanted him to be. Opinionated, animated and emotional describe what Wallace brings to every race. Paired with Bestwick, Wallace is having the best TV season of his life.

One person who is having a rough year is Brad Daugherty. Other than a goofy feature built around food, Daugherty is pinned in the infield with little to add. This week, Ray Evernham has been added to the panel and will be providing the crew chief perspective to the conversation that should have been there all season long.

Once Bestwick and company are done, they will be passing the ball to Jerry Punch, Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree. Saturday afternoon, Jarrett and Petree worked on an exciting Nationwide Series race with play-by-play announcer Marty Reid. The duo was enthusiastic and opinionated from start to finish.

Now, they face a long afternoon on a relatively short track that provides lots of racing action throughout the field. Keeping up with the action and providing the excitement on this type of track is not a strength of Punch. It will be interesting to see how much Jarrett and Petree cross over and provide help with the call of the race.

On pit road will be the regular ESPN team. Shannon Spake, Jamie Little, Dave Burns and Vince Welch seem to be

Fans know ESPN has overhyped the Chase for the last three years. By focusing on only the Chase cars, the network has alienated the loyal fans of other teams and driven them away from the coverage. This week, stories like Casey Mears starting in the top ten, Michael Waltrip rolling off in eleventh and Max Papis with a great qualifying spot will never be covered.

As the race unfolds, the pressure comes as the stories of the race leader begin to clash with the stories of the Chase contenders. After the Johnson crash, TV abandoned the race and continually updated the Johnson crew's efforts to rejoin the race. While some media members liked it, none of the fan emails or website comments spoke of it favorably.

Pictures from PIR are great. The scenery and the track layout makes good coverage easy to do. This track has a bridge, a dogleg on the backstretch and a wonderful hill behind Turns 3 and 4. Aerial pictures and high cameras show a wonderful scene and a full house would really add to the visuals.

"Points right now" is a phrase that makes lots of fans crazy. Interrupting the racing action to update Chase points is a TV production decision every single time. Perhaps, out of commercial, under caution or even after pit stops makes a little more sense as a time to offer this information.

In many ways, this telecast will tell the tale of ESPN's entire NASCAR season. Next week in Homestead is very different. As the final race, the production and emphasis will be clearly on the Chase Championship. It will be PIR where the ESPN team should be able to show everything they have learned this season about presenting a race in a form that fans embrace.

This post will host your comments about the coverage of the Sprint Cup Series from PIR on ABC. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks for taking the time to stop by.

Thanks to Max Papis for the great shot of PIR and Rattlesnake Mountain.

Jerry Punch, just call the action.

Anonymous said...

that was a weird view of nothing any TV comment?

JD, OK, I understand so let's do it sometime. Discuss the takeover. You know it will happen sooner or later. Please think about it as a topic. I will save my post and opinion for that day. And of course no need to post this note to you. Thanks and you are doing a great job!

Punch is reading us the ticker at the top of the screen. There's a race going on, but he hasn't noticed.
NASCAR pretends there's debris on the track and throws a caution. The restart causes an honest caution and six cars pay the penalty.
The "Play By Play" is more like "Dumb by Dumber," and the debris is imaginary. Ratings will be down, but no one will know why!

@red

I've heard of upchuck but not chucked into a corner...upchuck somehow makes me think of ESPN though. :)

Isn't it liberating to just KEEP the tv OFF! I feel like I just burned my, er, never mind.

MRN helps one's mood IMMENSELY.

Could replace prozac :)

Anonymous said...

Dot--not sure what TV is saying as they're not showing in due to the Jimmie Show but Marcos is having a nice battle with Ryan

Anonymous said...

Anyone know why John Andretti is in the garage? The top 35 battle will be close next weekend. Too bad ESPN doesn't care.

Anonymous said...

nice update about AJ Allmendinger from the MRN guys. Very pleased since I am a fan.

PammH said...

yes-messin' w/the ticker is also driving me crazy! if you aren't gonna talk about anyone but 2 drivers, at least let us see where our guys are!

OSBORNK said...

Showing cars isolated by themselves takes away from the telecast terrible. It might as well be a practice session.

Anonymous said...

battle going on betwwen kyle and AJ and no mention from ESPn. They love Jimmie Johnson

Vicky D said...

BS61 - I don't think the tv booth will ever tell us what happened to Andretti but maybe he had worse damage from wreck with Mikey.

Anonymous said...

Can someone force MRN audio into the producer ear because I'm hearing racing/battles that AREN'T being shown on TV :(

All TV is showing is Jimmie cam :( and wide shots of nothing

Jimbacca said...

Turned on Hotpass (Tony Stewart Channel) and they are actually reporting about other drivers. Got an update on Dinger and others. Shocking. Even a quick race rundown that got out the info and made sense.

If you don't pay attention to abc you won't notice, because the race is just background noise. But if you do start paying attention it really is sad the difference in announcing.

Anonymous said...

Sorry Kurt Busch & Clint Bowyer - you are not in the top 3 in points. No pit report for you.

Now we review Jimmie's championship senerio for the third time today.

The Loose Wheel said...

Busch he may have gotten a piece of that restart mess. He was right behind Mikey

red said...

best part of mrn just now: threw to local station ID and no one from local station jumped in so i got to just hear track sound: sweet!

terrisanislo said...

More debris???? Got that from MRN because ESPN is in commercial.

Anonymous said...

Thanks Vicky D & David. I thought John got through with minimal damage, but there is more than the eye can see on a small tv.

The Loose Wheel said...

Dave Rogers: "Save fuel buddy, 148 to go, we can make it on 1 more stop if you start saving right now"

Kyle: "Not this again..."

Ken said...

The "debris" we see is not on the track. It is what we are seeing on the screen.

Anonymous said...

Sophia - "Chuck" means to throw something hard semi-willy nilly ...

Mebbe it's a West Coast term that Buckeyes haven't heard of ... LOL ;-)

Dot said...

@ Gymmie, zero on TV about Marcos and Ryan. But, they're not HMS drivers.

dara2K said...

It must really be challenging to create excitement and interest in a very dull racetrack with such a predictable result (All Jimmie Johnson all the time...4th Championship, yada yada... It is legitimate to talk about points "as they run" at this point as well. However, ESPN/ABC could manage to do more. What's up with Tony Stewart's car? What about that Hamlin/Kesolowski deal with Nascar chatting with Kesolowski? What's up with Vickers and is he living up to his position in the top 12? What about Michael Waltrip's full-time career winding down? What's up with the guys that have no rides for 2010 yet? Come on..there's more out there than snake meat, isn't there?

terrisanislo said...

Ha! Never mind me! I had ABC on pause and forgot to restart it because I was concentrating on MRN!
hahahahahahahahaha!

I give up. This is just too bad to bear. I'm going to go scrub toilets or something more interesting.

@ red

re: Throwing to local station on MRN. YES I LOVE hearing quiet and then precious few minutes of engine noise....little things isn't it?

The Loose Wheel said...

BS61, I too thought he got through relatively clean, but he may have run something over that did damage under the car. That being said, he also may have just called it a day since Texas cost that group alot of money (I doubt that option though)

Top 35 really is a non-issue this year with so many teams about to go under this offseason

BIG WRECK!

Anonymous said...

That just collected half the field...

caution breeding cautions :(

Vicky D said...

Oh no not my fav, Matt!!

The Loose Wheel said...

Okay, here is the story on Dale Jr. He may have had a fluid leak, they were checking his pit stall when he spun.

Sophia said...

Dale Jr bad luck again.

:-(

:-(

TerryG said...

Tony got screwed too. Damn.

Vicky D said...

Mikey is back!

The Loose Wheel said...

Jr was leaking fluid. Left his stall and was showing fluid. If you look at the angle of him spinning you can see alot of dark fluid on his right front behind the right front wheel.

Good job MRN

Daly Planet Editor said...

Awesome replay from Newman's front bumper cam....

Sophia said...

WOW that sucks for TONY!! and the others...Vickers...

I am thinking somebody on Jr's team is a turncoat.

This is just too bizarre. :-(
Hendrick needs to clean house

Well it looks like Kez is a non factor now.

The Loose Wheel said...

The Loose Wheel said...

Dot, he was a non factor when the green fell =)

MRN interviewing Bobby Labonte

The Loose Wheel said...

Bobby Labonte: "I woulda drove it back but we ain't got enough money to crank it up and blow the motor up driving it back"

The Loose Wheel said...

MRN talking to Kez too

Ken said...

MRN being behind the race doesn't have to be a problem if you have a DVR. Just pause the DVR until MRN catches up. You can then listen to MRN and see the race as they describe it.

Ann_Ominous said...

Top 35 battle doesn't matter. With one car from Roush gone for sure for next year, the top 36 will be locked in for Daytona.

The difference between Speed (36th) and Andretti (35th) is enough that Mark Martin has a better chance of taking the point lead away from JJ than Speed does of passing Andretti even with Andretti in the garage.

The cars 37th on back have no chance of catching either Speed or Andretti.

Of course, more than one car will probably go away over the race season, but taking about that would take time away from talking about JJ!!!

Anonymous said...

The story of the race: Cars can't pass. 15 laps of hard racing for every inch, then 30+ laps of survival until the next pit stop.

The Loose Wheel said...

Wow, ESPN actually interviewed someone out of the race? TWO?!

Knock me over with a feather

Dot said...

@ David, now they start getting at the end of the season. Dumba....

The Loose Wheel said...

Ann_On

26 goes away, the #44 goes away, Odds are either the 96 goes away or the points go with Bobby to the 71 if HOF teams up with TRG, the #07 will probably be at Daytona but that might be it if no sponsor is found, Robby just said he can only run 8 races next year right now so you may get as far back to 40th in OP's locked in for next year.

35th really does not matter at all this year...

Sophia said...

Ken

not everybody HAS DVR.

Still choose MRN over tv...even if tv on muted (now after 2 wrecks) I am NEVER looking at it..doing other things online..listening, this blog and Twitter :-)

& ENJOYING it immensely.

PUTRID CAM WORK is not worth it. You known TUNING in to BSPN same ol' same ol', they got $$ don't care. The end.

The Loose Wheel said...

LOL @ Dot. Love ya!

ESPN no reports asto why Jr actually spun. Shame on them. At least MRN had some report...no one has talked to Jr yet though.

Vicky D said...

According to MRN, they are trying to fix Jr's car and get it back out on the track.

bevo said...

Now this is funny!

ESPN is so bad that the pirate sites with the race are using HotPass. :) Right now they're on the Martin Channel.

Amazing.

The Loose Wheel said...

Report on Jr: cut oil line, showed under the hood.

Vicky D said...

Also, hotpass is showing one of JJ's team members in the pits being tended to by a medic of some sort.

Dot said...

Why aren't the other HMS teams helping Jr?

The Loose Wheel said...

LOL Andy Petree trying to backpedal now...

This is sad.

Anonymous said...

Petree just threw Jamie under the bus with the oil leak ...

MRN said that JuneBug had a cut oil line ... like 5 minutes ago ...

Sophia said...

@David

Is cut oil line a common problem??????

I still stand by my earlier comment & Jr's team (5.13 comment)

Daly Planet Editor said...

That was kind of funny. Worried more about what they said earlier than what was right.

GinaV24 said...

@sophia -- they showed drivers kissing? Daggone, I missed it. LOL (just kidding) I hate when they cut away from the flyover, too. The trackpass ticker was all screwed up a few minutes ago, I had to go out and restart it since even refresh wouldn't fix it. I skipped the pre race garbage and since they had snakeeating I'm glad I did. Yuck.

I hate the ticker changing between where they run and the points spread. Heck, does anyone NOT know that this is a done deal for the 48? Chad won't allow them to have 2 bad races in a row, not this close to the end. I hate single car shots. They did a few better ones of the field on the restarts, but I'm definitely channel surfing.

The Loose Wheel said...

Sophia, not overly common. After a wreck it is but Jr had that issue BEFORE he wrecked. Uncommon.

Tia, MRN reported a leak of some kind from Jr right after the wreck happened. Well over a half hour ago now. ESPN cares more about the points race than the actual race going on. That fact proves it. The most popular driver in NASCAR has an issue and ESPN is still "speculating" asto what happened.

Dot said...

Since BSPN won't tell us, Marcos is 11th.

Vicky D said...

I just noticed that on live leaderboard. Maybe he can get by KB.

Dot said...

@ VickyD, hope hope, pray pray.

The Loose Wheel said...

Jr confirming oil led to his spin and that it was oil down the right side of the car.

I love MRN.

Daly Planet Editor said...

I got kicked out of Twitter, when I try to re-enter it wants me to download a file. Isn't this fun?

bevo said...

Coldplay? Interesting combining that with Guns N Roses...

Sophia said...

Jr just interviewed..said they are STILL looking for issue..never mentioned cut oil line.

I am in kitchen making dinner with MRN :)

red said...

mrn talking to dale: had an oil leak, oil all over the side of the car, spun out, something broke on the motor where the oil is, been leaking the whole race (!), feels bad for everyone else, he tried to avoid them but couldn't get the car out of the way.

Vicky D said...

I just heard Jr's interview and how can Nascar let a car out on the track leaking fluid the whole race?

bevo said...

@JD - no problem with Twitter for me. Signed out and signed back in.

Sophia said...

but does oil leak MEAN cut line.

stupidquestionsophia :)

red said...

see ya later, gang: off to dinner!

Anonymous said...

David - Yes, I know ... I have MRN on ... I was referring to MRN saying there was oil all over the under side of the hood ...

Dot said...

@ Vicky D, HMS mean anything?

Ann_Ominous said...

@David, I heard that about Robby. But, if he shows up at Daytona he is still locked in. He's still guarenteed a starting spot for the first 5 races until he fails to show up for one.

There is one thing that is getting on my nerves - and even PRN is doing this! They keep on talking about clinch scenarios saying things like if Jimmie finishes 4th in the next 2 races he has clinched the championship. Uh duh, there are only two races left. If he does that he has WON the championship, not clinched it! It isn't like ROY where some committee meets and can dole out bonus points for things like charity work. You don't clinch the championship at Homestead - you WIN it!!

The Loose Wheel said...

If Jr said something broke on the motor then no...leak does not mean cut.

He was not sabataged.

How can a car run all day with an oil leak? Spotters only see the left side of the car that are in the infield, and when they see the car down the front they don't see the right side cleanly. If no one behind him was reporting oil then they had no reason to suspect. It only got really bad after his stop before that wreck.

terrisanislo said...

Time for a "Miss Terri Debris" caution.

The Loose Wheel said...

Ann_O: Same logic applies for the #07. RC won't leave Casey hanging. Even without a sponsor I expect that car to show up for the 500 which it would be locked in for. I fully expect 2 cars to completely vanish, 3 if HOF does not get a new place to take their money/points. 82 and 71 would lock in when the 2 go away, so the 71 is locked in regardless. Unless they field a full 2 car effort and put points on the 70 and use Bobby's PCP to get in the field.

09 I think is 38th, I expect them to be locked in too.

Its interesting to speculate at least. Much more so than Jimmie's clinch scenario or championship winning scenario

The Loose Wheel said...

Kez and Jr back in the race

Daly Planet Editor said...

It's just so hard to see them ignoring the rest of the field.

bevo said...

Ticker kind of useless during pit stops

Dot said...

@ JD, like I said, all others debris to BSPN except JJ, MM & JG.

Jr and Kez back out.

The Loose Wheel said...

Kyle saying Jr is still dropping fluid

The Loose Wheel said...

NASCAR watching the 88

Anonymous said...

at one point, lance said they needed another octopus which sounds to me like 8 more ways to loose fluid. Poor Jr.

OSBORNK said...

The drivers in the top 35 at the end of the year will probably start the first 5 races next year whether or not they find sponsorship. They can start and park for 5 races and take home a tidy profit.

Ann_Ominous said...

sheesh! BSPN doesn't seem to have the running order straight. They say one thing but put up a graphic that has something different. Or put up two conflicting graphics.

They actually talked about Ambrose and Speed earlier. Guess they didn't know what to do when JJ was not in the lead due to pit stops!

The Loose Wheel said...

OSB, a minimum of 2 of those teams will cease to exist meaning they forefit the spot regardless.

an RPM/Yates car will go away as will the #26. A 2nd HOF/Yates car may disappear too.

Dot said...

AAARRRGGG, split screens during GF racing. And now the 48 pit. Make it stop.

Ann_Ominous said...

There has been speculation that one car will continue to run under the Yates banner just for the points. Be interesting to see if NASCAR allows it.

I agree speculation on who will go away and who will then be locked in for Daytona would be more interesting talk that all the point scenario talk. I guess that's why they aren't talking about it!!

Daly Planet Editor said...

This is brutal and what Punch just said is embarrassing. It's like ESPN does not realize THEY are the ones respsonsible for bringing us an exciting telecast!

terrisanislo said...

What did he say???

Unknown said...

I think this has been the worst broadcast ESPN has put on since their first one in 2007. They have made zero effort to show other battles and other cars.

Daly Planet Editor said...

terri,

He read a scripted line about Superman being back and junk...talking about Johnson.

It was just horrible...

Anonymous said...

DJ / Petree - Gibbs cars smoke on deceleration because ...

They run LOOSE valve guides ...

So they suck air & burn oil ...

GinaV24 said...

I assume someone wrote that for Punch -- if the racing is exciting we aren't seeing it. And yet NASCAR still says that things are wonderful in the racing world?

Not for the fans subjected to this mess every week.

The Loose Wheel said...

Ann_O

I am not sure they will. It kinda depends on what happens with Paul Menard though. Some say he is staying, some say he will walk.

HOF is the other domino I am waiting on. They actually have money from DLP and ask.com

The Loose Wheel said...

Tia, where did you hear that? I knew they had been doing something with their package that forced the cars to do that on high braking tracks but I had not heard where that was the exact reason...

Unknown said...

I just pray the scum sucking bastards that run Nascar let them race it out instead of throwing a bogus yellow here.

GinaV24 said...

I'm sorry but honestly having the leader, whoever it is, run off by several seconds does not make for compelling racing.

I supposed Pete Pistone will tell us again this week, how ESPN told the right story. I get that the 48 winning a race and another championship is good for them, but its NOT the whole story.

Karen said...

JP saying the new show on ABC called V about aliens is his favorite. Anyone surprised by that? Takes one to know one.

Unknown said...

Pete Pistone is a paid for by Nascar shill for Nascar. There is a reason why he was put in that position and that was to spread the word. Anybody that doesnt believe that needed to pay attention when he claimed the Brickyard was an "amazing" race.

Vicky D said...

Karen - good one!

Dot said...

@ Karen, you're killing me.

Ken said...

They're having a hart time finding anything to say. They're boring themselves to death.

Vicky D said...

Hotpass still giving us info all around the track but mainly JJ now.

The Loose Wheel said...

MRN calling the Kurt/Bowyer battle, ESPN showing Jimmie all alone.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Refusing to go back through the field. Absolutely refusing.

This is horrible coverage. Silence and awkward moments. I think DJ and Andy are probably steaming right now.

Unknown said...

I will say one thing for ESPN. They are the absolute best at spacing their commercial breaks as to give the final 50 or so laps commercial free. Theyve done that very very well since theyve started and I think that has something to do with Neil Goldberg.

What do you think Mr. Daly?

Anonymous said...

David - It's an OLD engine builder's trick ...

Run loose valve guides (even old valve seals) ... engine sucks air ... burns more oil ... creates MORE power (cause of the increased air into the combustion chambers) ... Thus, the smoke on deceleration ...

First time my Dad saw a JGR car he said "They suck ... suck air" ... LOL

dara2K said...

Game...Set...Match...Jimmie just sealed the deal for No. 4! It's so very anti-climactic. Congrats to Jimmie and HMS however, next week's coverage on ESPN/ABC should be more punishment for the fans...If you think today was a snoozer, wait til next week!

For WT fans, DW on with Despain. Should be interesting what he has to say.

The Loose Wheel said...

Thank tia, I don't know if anyone at JGR has confirmed that, but I knew there was speculation since it was something they showed big time at tracks like Martinsville where it helped their braking actually.

Didn't notice it on the higher power tracks, probably because of the sustained RPM's and not wanting to burn the piston.

Jimmie really is impressive. That whole team is. Its not them I am upset with, ESPN could have put on a great telecast while still paying credit to JJ

Unknown said...

The difference between Marks superman comment and Earnhardts wonder boy comment was that one was made by one of the classiest human beings in Nascar, the other was made by one of the worst.
