Live Blogging The Sprint Cup Series Race From Texas (2:30M - ABC)

Three races remain in the 2009 Sprint Cup Series season and all of them will be on ABC.

Allen Bestwick leads the NASCAR on ESPN team on-air with NASCAR Countdown. He will be joined by Brad Daugherty and Rusty Wallace. Tim Brewer will contribute from the Tech Garage.

Jerry Punch is calling the play-by-play action from TMS. He has Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree alongside of him for the race. Down on pit road are Jamie Little, Shannon Spake, Vince Welch and Dave Burns.

This race is fast and dangerous. Accidents happen very quickly and the on-track action under green leaves very little time for features and the playback of recorded material.

It is hard to use the in-car cameras at this track live because there is almost always passing and action going on somewhere in the field. The aerial shot is effective and really puts things in perspective in terms of track positions. It should also show the double-file restarts quite well.

The low angle "speed shots" at TMS work quite well to deliver the reality of the speed to the TV viewers. They are most effective on restarts when the pack is still bunched together and coming up to speed.

Pit stops under caution should have the normal triple-split video coverage. The race off pit road is key once again. Green flag pit stops demand a split screen, as the action continues at full speed regardless of the cars cycling through pit road.

There has been great sound and pictures from TMS on Friday and Saturday for the truck and Nationwide Series races. With all the TV toys available to them, it should come down to smart choices being made by the ESPN producer and director to keep the focus on the racing and update the stories unfolding during the event.

I've switched to CBC to watch "Steven & Chris" ... Then I'll be going to Universal Sports to watch figure skating ...

Have fun with the Jimmie Love Fest ...

I'm DONE!

TexasRaceLady said...

Doc, I hate to tell you, but I DO NOT CARE what parts and pieces had to be fixed on "the 48 car."

See my last comment about free radio..is out there but I only found out from email & great peeps here :) We can't put links, gets JD in trouble

Dot said...

Wow. Did you see Marcos and Reut running together? Accidental camera shot?

Vicky D said...

Dot, I blinked and missed MA & Reut.

Anonymous said...

ESPN now on mute. Thanks for the radio links friends!

Anonymous said...

Good runs going for Ambrose and Reut

Anonymous said...

There attitude seems literally to be, well, we'll just have to make do and get by until Jimmy gets back on track...

It is just unbelievable.....the annoucers give the impression that that it would be better if they stopped the race and waited for the 48 to get his repairs done, then they would have something to talk about.

Delco said...

Can you imagine the 'Jimmie watch' we will have once he gets back on the track? Oy.

Sorry about the link, new here.

PRN saying Reut helped wreck Hornish who wrecked JJ

Daly Planet Editor said...

It's so bad you can send radio links. I check them out and if they are bad I delete them.

I feel bad for DJ and Andy. This is ruining their careers on TV.

Fans are screaming in email they have no idea how their driver got to his current place and they are pissed after last week.

Sophia said...

PRN saying JJ will be out in about 10 minutes.RRq panel not doing well..speaking way too much about this...I hear banging...sheesh.

Beating A Dead Horse said...

I love me some Hotpass and PRN.

Chris from NY said...

Back and forth between Giants and ESPN, PRN radio on.

Johnson's car is coming out.

DrTeplisky said...

The Dr is in--packing for Florida next week (some vacation, then Homestead), and is beating his head against the file cabinet trying to understand modern television sports production as executed by ESPN.

Opportunity City? I like it when the Doc explains the medicine behind emergency extrications much better.

I would like it even better if the Doc were prowling pit road, and Allen Bestwick were anchoring.

It is poetic justice that the script had to be thrown on the dung heap.

Dot said...

Rolling out JJ. Script back on.

New NASCAR mid term race rule change. JJ gets the 112 lap wave around.

Beating A Dead Horse said...

How many cases of bear bond is on the 48 car?

red said...

ok, radio guys just said in re: 48 car: "they're having to bolt some things on, hammer some things on, as you can see . . . "

no, i am not making this up.

now they're telling me they're following twitter updates from nascar media and say utter says mcmurray going to EGR next year is confirmed.

is ANYONE paying attention to the race?!?

kinda liking that stealth 48! what about you, nrf?!?

Dot said...

And here is big box Tim.

JJ now full screen over 100 laps down...wait he has to share it with Brewer. This is a new all time low.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO not the tech garage.

And Doc says that car looks terrific. Oh no there's TB now.

wow this is really bad tv coverage

Becky [@hightechredneck] said...

I am so frustrated with the quality (or should I say the lack thereof) of the ABC/ESPN broadcast that I think I'm going to watch some shows on my dvr and listen to the race on PRN. I'm getting nothing from the tv coverage right now as it is.

Chris from NY said...

Full screen Chad.

Real nice.

Anonymous said...

BROTHER! Turned to the JTV tab to see Captain Obvious in the big box and JJ in a small box :(

Sophia said...

Well my room mate just started lawnmower, can't hear beans from apple butter (windows open, NICE day) but the camera pics as usual are not telling us anything except. . . . JJ if back on and NOW they have Timmy B splaining.

Have some candy, or an adult beverage and just enjoy the trainwreck before us.

I thought Bengals played at 4pm but they played AND WON earlier game...

GEEZ are there cars running under GREEN FLAG> WHY are we seeing the pits?!?!?!?! w JJ

TexasRaceLady said...

Why are we watching Chad?

Heaven help me --- THERE'S A RACE GOING ON!

Charlie said...

Are we under caution since they are just showing JJ car.

The Loose Wheel said...

Okay, now I'm pissed off.

This is a JOKE! There is absolutely NO reason you should be fixated on Jimmie Johnson right now. I understand he is the points leader and all that jazz but still. They have NO reason to be focused on his exit from the garage, stop for new tires, etc. Update from time to time, but other than that he is JUST ANOTHER CAR.

-sigh- ESPN, what more could you want from the WWL?

The Loose Wheel said...

Lions lead 17-0 after 1 in Seattle. I'd rather watch that...

Even if Shrub-a-dub-dub IS leading, ESPN doesn't care...

bozo said...

can't believe they didn't have a can of white spray paint and put Lowes on the hood, that would have been good.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Too funny! I would laugh if the telecast were not just so sad.

To see this sport become a sideshow for ESPN is disheartening.

Anonymous said...

I have to rely on Nascar.com leaderboard, PRN, TDP, Twitter & ESPN on mute to figure out what the heck is going on.

Sally said...

I wonder if it has occurred to anyone in Daytona or ESPN that trying to jam the 'chase' down fans throats is part of the reason so many of us absolutely hate it? And this fixation on JJ....

Anonymous said...

oops...just saw your tweet JD take back what I said about Captain Obvious THIS time :)

Newracefan said...

Red, have started drinking for obvious reason. Someone on Twitter called it a mean looking 48, I'm calling it the PO'd Knaus look. Jimmie is trying to have the car drive better and Chad is trying to keep the tires from rubbing yet they are both calm. I'd be screaming my head off.

Chris from NY said...

PRN is BSing us with a Kentucky pitch.

Sophia said...

I think you need a column after this and then our comments.

JJ wreck just confuzzled everybody even more.

Even the radio guys can't leave JJ alone.

Anybody have Barney Hall's phone number? :)

Is anybody RACING besides JJ? I see cars on my tv. .

Anonymous said...

Whenever I'm having a great day, I can always count on coming to TDP and seeing 200 people tell me what a horrible race I'm watching.

Then again these are the people that cheered when JJ wrecked, so the amount of intelligence and class is just as suspected here.

Anonymous said...

This is like a Nascar Performance show, not a race broadcast. They could make a great half hour segment about repairing a race car. Only one problem,

DURING THE RACE IS NOT THE TIME TO DO IT!!!!

If I can ever get my hands on the monkey and football in the prodcution truck, the monkey will be dinner the football will look like a piece of cow dung...AARRGGGGGG!!!!!!

I beg your pardon, I do NOT, EVER, cheer when a driver wrecks.

Chris from NY said...

I was here on Friday.

I'm watching the Cup race because I always do.

Dot said...

@ nrf, I'm sure they did. Funny comment from you, road course. :)

The Loose Wheel said...

I was thrilled, I cheered. I admit it and won't hide behind that. That being said, Jimmie was already driving back to the pits when I did it, was already on the radio, etc.

ESPN has not a clue what is going on, I don't believe they've reset the field once unless ive missed it...

rich said...

I am watching Hotpass. They usually have one box for the driver whose channel you are watching and a smaller box for the ABC broadcast. I thought that they had changed to the 48 camera because all I was seeing was the 48 team working on the car. I finally learned that was what the broadcast was showing. Wow, you have got to be kidding me.
Once they get a script they can change it can they.

Jonathan said...

Texas im sorry but I was all over the cheering when I saw JJ crash! its about time this chase gets a little interesting!!!! I know i know if your here for the crashes please leave but this is one crash I had to cheer. Just been sick of the JJ good luck charm and this was awsome! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Is it just me or do the annoucers actually seem more comfortable that JJ is back in the race. I mean serioulsy, while he was in the garage there voices were just off, as if they were nervous and didn't know what to do, now that are back on there couch all comfy again.

am I nuts or did any of you hear a noticable change too?

@ Sally 4:51...

I predicted right when the first trial balloon went up about the chase that this is what we would end up with...upset fans and upset sponsors. I believe that, no matter what TV network got this portion of the schedule, the nature of the beast would make it irresistible to not focus on just a handful of drivers. I just wish that I still had some of my old articles and forum posts as proof of my "I told you so" even though the tipping point came later than I expected.

KoHoSo said...

I am really just beside myself at this point. Here the whole ESPN crew has a chance to throw out the pre-determined story lines and really let themselves shine and they are instead giving us what I believe is the worst race coverage I have ever seen. Updating us on Jimmie Johnson is the proper thing to do but the manner in which it is being done is ridiculous. If this is bothering me with my very small amount of amateur television production training received almost 20 years ago, I can only imagine how terrible it makes Mr. Daly feel.

The Loose Wheel said...

Conspiracy theory or not, I don't care who benefits, all debris cautions bother me equally. I would love to see a caution-free race. Don't really care if only 5 guys finish on the lead lap, it'd just be fun to see how a race would play out without manipulating it with timely cautions etc.

dara2K said...

What are the chances that one day we'll all wake up and read a headline that NASCAR is more like the WWE than MLB/NFL/NBA? I am not a hater. I am just thinking out of the box. What were the chances today that Jimmie Johnson would crash like he did after all the media bashing the predictable chase result this week? I felt this way after Harvick won in Dale's car the week after Dale passing. I felt this way after the Hendrick win after that awful plane crash. Nascar has such a tight control on everything and the rules are so grey/subjective. Am I just cold-hearted and jaded or are we all not getting the inside joke? Just sayin'.......

Anonymous said...

We get to see the points as they run yet again and Jerry says that JJ is on the track but not nearly up to speed. What does that even really mean? One of the many meaningless phrases he tosses out.

Ok, ESPN, take notes, listen HARD.

The 48 is 120 laps down. He will not win today. We do not need to watch him limp around the track. We don't need updates.

Jeff Gordon just spun out. He did NOT hit anything, he did NOT get any damage, he is NOT in the garage or out of the race. Don't write him off yet.

Also, Kyle Busch would be the first driver in 61 years of NASCAR history to win all three races in a weekend. This is true, but if my math is right, the Trucks have only been around 15 years or so. Meaning Richard Petty couldn't win a Cup, Nationwide & Truck race all in the same season. Don't make it sound like the CWTS has been there forever.

dara2K: i understand you're playing devil's advocate & thinking outside the box and as much as the 48 team makes me crazy w/how great they've been? i just can't accept that nascar manipulates the races to that deep an extent. phantom cautions to tighten the field? absolutey! but this? nope.

the 48 accident was, for me, just that: an accident. no racer would EVER agree to taking out another racer at speed, no matter what.

the chase became tighter when the 48 wrecked. having the 24 and the 42 then also spin and possibly lose points doesn't do much to make the points tighter. the two of them staying on the rack w/the 5 and making up points on the 48? possibly.

again, i get your point but it's not one i can share.

and not to drop and opinion and run but i have to do exactly that: time for the trip to the station. have a good rest of the race, gang! will catch up later tonight!

a certain fave driver is in the top 10 but I don't dare mention until the race is OVER.

KoHoSo said...

@ Makiki...

In all fairness, especially at this time of year, there are probably a lot of people coming into the race telecast at all times as they move away from football. I would just encourage Dr. Punch to mix up his phrasing instead of saying it the same way over and over again.

AJ Allmendinger in the top 10 and no mention.

I went out worked in the garage a while and came in to see the same ole same ole. Reminded of JJ wreck twice now. Wow, what a mess.

rich said...

Sorry ladies, I took it back

Sophia said...

120 laps to go per PRN

Dot said...

@ dear Sophia, I remember those things. Wow, haven't seen one in years. I wonder what kids would think of them today?

Re: JP and just joining our coverage. What he should say is. "in case you just flipped back from the football game".

I just turned on computer a little whike ago. Caught up w/twitter & comments here. Have TV on in background-barely watch it. Laid on couch most of afternoon & read 2 trashy romance novels. Saw the JJ wreck-looked up because radio guys got excited. Noticed lots of jj updates on repairs. if Kryle wins, means I don't have to watch VL or TWIN. never listened to any of my sirius this morn, since I knew it would be all shrub. beautiful day in MI for Nov. 60 degrees. Enjoyed the day outside w/my dog. Dark now, so here I am. Awful coverage, btw. Still full screen pit stops-guess that's one that really blows my mind. I'm ready for 2010.

@koho they don't update us on 3/4 of the field the entire race, the points leader though needs an update every 2 minutes?????

remember when the race each day was the story and the championship was the secondary concern....hmmmm i miss those days

Charlie said...

Tony Stewart in 5th, when did that happen.

KoHoSo said...

@ Makiki...

They just might if they know a little about NASCAR and realize that this race could be a big turning point in the expected coronation of King Jimmie. Then again, when they tune in and see a broadcast that is about as disjointed of one that I have ever seen on a supposed top-notch network, I'm not so sure.

I missed ur take back comment darn it! or maybe not. Just walked around the house..

I HATE new time change..getting dark.:(

Daly Planet Editor said...

The thing I am hearing on Twitter and in email is that fans are walking on this telecast.

Never heard that before.

Dot said...

AGAIN??????????? Make it stop. I need a drink.

Beating A Dead Horse said...

How many replays of the JJ wreck up til now?

Dot said...

Chad in full screen. AARRGG!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Oh my god. Two screens both showing jimmy, chad, etc. This is disgusting.

Anonymous said...

OK it's official, time to get the chicks out of the pits......

Richard Petty was right, the woman don't belong there

terri sanislo said...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I cannot believe this.

I am totally flabbergasted.

What on earth can anyone say?

More of the wreck, etc.

Lord, deliver us.

And a wreck happens and they have no clue. REPLAY

Is there a good football game anywhere?

I don't disagree with you one bit. The information and presentation between the necessary updates and announcements is abysmal, atrocious, horrendous, pathetic, and more words that I won't use on a family-oriented blog. ;-)

Dot said...

Funny Chad said he had to go, caution.

Vicky D said...

Looked like Jeff Burton's wreck during practice. They won't stop talking and SHOWING JJ.

Sally said...

Once again, missed cars coming off pit road.

The Loose Wheel said...

TRL there are a few. NO-Carolina should be a good 2nd half, Lions lead by 4 over Seattle, Giants and Chargers are tied, SanFran leads by 7 over Tenn. All the late games have been competitive...

Sophia said...

marcos got 4 tires and track bar adjustment and gasoline

Charlie said...

Ok as soon as we are back from commercial I want to know what place JJ is in. I don't care about the top 10.
Come on JP tell me where JJ is.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Missed every race off pit road under caution....every single one.

Vicky D said...

This would be a real stretch for a conspiracy but maybe Gordon really wants JJ to win the chase so he's doing everything to finish further back today.

Oh, and by the way, the 5 team members DID NOT assist Jimmie's team in the garage.

The ESPN pictures never seem to match the race PRN is calling. Perhaps the production truck could use PRN as their spotters.

pretty bad when the crew chief of a car running over 100 laps down cares more about what is going on ON the race track the television crews do.....

Sophia said...

127 laps remain? What? I thought it wasa 120 a bit ago.

Hmmm...made lemon cake last night, dark, we went for walk, and just heating up left over for dinners..

Oh, is there a race on. Hey they're FINALLY showing a reply of JJ race.

JD

if we hadn't done what we had to do earlier, it was dark, and the Bengals game over, wouldn't be here.

I'm still bummed Juan crashed.

Steve L. said...

I seem to remember everyone being upset with Fox and their lovefest with Kyle Busch. This is worse!

KoHoSo said...

@ TexasRaceLady 5:49...

LOL!!!

Oh, we forgot "putrid," too. :-)

Sally said...

And people used to complain that Jr. got too much TV time when he wasn't running up front. Guess this should show them!
