Monday TV Better Than Sunday?

NASCAR fans now have to program the DVR for Mondays. There are now three very interesting TV shows to watch. With only a couple of weeks remaining in the TV season, let's discuss them.

Last Sunday morning brought one hour of NASCAR Now, two hours of RaceDay and one more hour of the NASCAR Countdown pre-race show. Four hours of TV that essentially covered the same stories, originated from the same track and previewed the same race.

By the time the race was run and the post-race shows were finished, thirteen hours of non-stop NASCAR TV had been on the air. No matter how interesting the stories, how good the reporters and how exciting the race that is just a lot of TV.

Mondays have become a popular destination for fans who may not have watched NASCAR on Sunday and instead rooted for their favorite NFL team. TV ratings drop sharply when the football season starts and this year has been no exception.

Veteran fans may remember when Allen Bestwick was unceremoniously dropped from his Monday night show on SPEED. Along with Johnny Benson, Bestwick was sent right out the door without a proper goodbye and without a shred of dignity. Perhaps, some TV viewers shared my opinion that Bestwick was the foundation of that show. His tough but fair hosting allowed Michael Waltrip, Kenny Schrader and Benson to do what they do best. That is talk about racing and goof around.

Now, years later, Bestwick has taken over ESPN2's failing Monday night version of NASCAR Now and built it into a powerhouse. After a year of mixing the panelists, Ricky Craven and Ray Evernham have become the new "expert panel." Adding Randy LaJoie or Boris Said makes for some laughs, but the information comes from the duo of Craven and Evernham.

This hour is tightly structured, but Bestwick seems to be slowly pulling that back to allow for more free discussion among panelists. ESPN's mindset these days is glossy perfection and NASCAR just does not fit that mold.

Evernham especially has proven to be a great source of knowledge on racing specifics, including the new cars and technology. Craven is honest and upfront about his own history in the sport. This team is absolutely what ESPN is looking for in polished and well spoken analysts who look comfortable in a suit and tie.

The new wildcard on the TV screen is SPEED's Race Hub. This Monday through Thursday thirty minute show appeared out of thin air the week of the NASCAR Hall of Fame induction announcement. To say it was thrown together is basically accurate.

Now, several weeks later, things have taken a turn. NASCAR owners, drivers and sponsors have discovered that a short drive to the SPEED studios can put them on national TV live at 7:30PM. Monday's show featured owner Todd Braun and his new Nationwide Series driver Brian Scott announcing their partnership in a conversation with co-hosts Krista Voda and Randy Pemberton.

What SPEED is doing is capitalizing on the one weakness of Monday's NASCAR Now. That show originates from Connecticut, while SPEED is right down the street from the Lowe's Motor Speedway and near almost all the NASCAR team shops.

Now that the secret is out, this week already features Ricky Carmichael, Martin and his brother Ryan Truex together and a slew of the NASCAR regional racing champions. There have already been a mix of Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series drivers on the previous shows.

Race Hub has a very good reason to gravitate toward these guests and interviews. They are followed by one hour of highlights and race discussion on This Week in NASCAR. That is a franchise for SPEED that the network is trying to restore to a dominant position on Monday night.

Steve Byrnes has settled in as host with his sidekick and show veteran Michael Waltrip. Around this duo swirls the alternating panelists Chad Knaus and Greg Biffle. Recently added for the Chase was SPEED veteran Jimmy Spencer.

The result has been a show that is as fun to watch for the interaction between panelists as the content. Waltrip has changed completely from his original TV persona and is now a staunch NASCAR supporter. This new owner/driver viewpoint drives Chad Knaus crazy, makes Greg Biffle squirm and often confuses Spencer.

Byrnes pushes the panel through the race highlights, introduces some features and then offers a preview of the next race. Along the way, topics pop-up that would never make it to the NASCAR Now screen. The lure of TWIN is the potential for spontaneous combustion at any moment.

The benefit of this diverse Monday for fans is that three very different shows produced by three very different groups look at the sport from different angles.

ESPN produces the buttoned-up NASCAR Now with slick video editing and expensive neckties. SPEED produces Race Hub with bar stools, blue jeans and on-the-fly interviews. The NASCAR Media Group produces TWIN with an agenda to review, preview and promote the sport.

Can you share with us what shows you watch and why? We have a very diverse group of readers at TDP. Our interest is how you select the Monday shows to view and what you like or dislike about them. To add your opinion, just click on the comments button below.

Please remember, this is a family-friendly site so we appreciate your comments being offered without hateful speech or derogatory language. Thanks for taking the time to stop by The Daly Planet.

J.D.,

All three programs are on my DVR. "Race Hub" and "NASCAR Now" are recorded during the week.

I watch the Monday programs in this order: "Race Hub," "This Week In NASCAR," and "NASCAR Now." If I have to miss one, I miss NN, even though it's the best source for solid information. "Hub" and "TWIN" are just too much fun to watch to miss. But I usually see all three on Mondays although sometimes I don't finish all of them until Weds.

I miss Ken Schrader. I am starting to respect Jimmy Spencer on "TWIN," although I still think he's a tool on the weekends. I would trade Spencer and Biff for Ken Schrader, though.

Speed programmers: Please add a later replay of "Hub." I use my DVR, but my friends can't figure out how to use theirs. So when I tell them what I've seen, they wish they had a replay.

I agree Hub should be repeated for all time zones to catch easier even though I can't get into the show daily yet. Hard for me to start new tv habits.:-) Thus when I hear it's a good show I also wish it were re aired.

Same goes for WT. IT needs to be repeated midnights on Sunday.

I had other stuff going on for early TWIN but THANKFULLY SPEED REPEATS it at midnight!!

Thank you SPEED! I love my dose of SPEED & the boys and enjoy Jimmy on here.

Not gonna go there about Schrader. That's a pipe dream and he's busy racing dirt tracks.

JD, funny you should write this column right now.

I recorded NN, Hub & TWIN.

Turned on NN, saw Boris and deleted it. I refuse to watch the roundtable when he is on. It's the 3 Rs or no watching for me. Sorry to AB.

Got Hub on now. TWIN set to record @ 9PM reair. Accidentally erased the 5PM one. SPEED reairs that but, not Hub. Wonder why, too? Pass Time @ 8:30 was a rerun.

Now that I have remembered to record Hub, I watch it every night. I like the show. Funny moment, Steve on set w/Krista.

TWIN is and has always been a must see no matter who's on it. I'm even liking Jimmy S. He should act more like this on RD. Maybe it would have a calming effect on Kenny.

Fun stuff on SPEED, "tied" up stuff on BSPN. Will they lose the dress clothes next year?

I try to record N-Now and R-Hub every night to make sure I do not miss. I always watch those 2 Monday editions and almost always watch the bulk of TWIN. I do hope SPEED will keep R-Hub on the air year-round - and Wind Tunnel also.

I am a Boris Said fan and always enjoy hearing what he has to say. However, I continue to be most impressed with how very well Ray E. and Ricky C. are able to organize their thoughts and make things understandable.

Despite often griping, I do watch EESPN and EESPN2 frequently and I find N-Now to be one of the 3 or 4 best shows on any of the EESPN networks - and far superior to many higher profile shows.

Ok I really like this TWIN group. It was very lighthearted tonight with kibitzing among the guys.

I LOVE the addition of Jimmy Spencer on here. He really makes it interesting.

They kept commenting the producer in their ear was speeding them along...I like the questions at the end but they needed more time to answer. The one about keypad or something to Biffle went over my head, lol.

But I love all this stuff.
It's just a FUN show. I feel like the only thing missing on this show is a pizza & beers on the table.

PRODUCER, please give more time for questions and less video.

XOXO Sophia :-D

Well, I'd love to answer from a viewpoint of someone who has seen all three, but guess what? This week I've only seen TWIN!

In addition to SPEED not re-airing Race Hub in the Pacific time zone I also discovered that Monday's NASCAR NOW isn't re-airing until 2am Tuesday.

I have yet to see an episode of RH because although I have a VCR, it just aint worth my time to have to tape a show several times a week. And like Ken Fong, I feel that NN, while informative, is just too buttoned-down and not as entertaining.

Question for JD: What did you mean about MW changing his viewpoint completely? I go well back into the 90s with IWC and people have been complaining that he's a NASCAR shill for as long as I remember. His support of NASCAR's stewardship of the sport goes way back long before he became a car owner.

Just curious.

And as I've posted here before, I really miss Schrader, Benson and Bestwick too. Tonight's show had a lot of fun moments, but nothing today equals the chemistry and camraderie of the old show. No offense to Biff, Chad, Steve and "Mongo" who do a great job on TWIN.

Ditto to SOPHIA, re: too many pre-produced video segments. Yes, they are well-done, but how many times do I need to hear the details and the scanners from a race that occured six months or a year ago? I mean, I heard them the FIRST time!

These seem to be not much more than a way for some overpaid production people to keep their jobs, a disease that infects all of entertainment media.

Less BS and more on-air talent!

From the article, this part talking about TWIN...

The result has been a show that is as fun to watch for the interaction between panelists as the content.

This is one time where I must respectfully disagree with our esteemed Mr. Daly. For me, the only fun could be derived in a completely unintended way...like watching people act like idiots on a reality TV show or looking at old ladies back into parked cars at the mall during the Christmas shopping rush.

To be honest, I have been stewing about TWIN since last week but did not get a proper place to deposit my extreme displeasure as the blog topics went in other directions. I tried to start watching tonight but I became too disgusted. After the complete glossing over of some very important issues last week (such as Mr. Waltrip's direct involvement in how the sudden rule change was made for Talledega) and what seemed to me to be a total lack of respect for the dissatisfied race fans that bordered on calling those that didn't like what they saw stupid and ignorant, I have completed what I think has been a slow turn going on ever since the first big change in the show when AB was replaced by Dave Despain and JB got dumped.

I have long been a Mikey fan. Anybody that thinks otherwise should go back to my many comments left on this blog about TWIN and how I have defended him over and over again. However, his performance this year topped off by last week has made me lose all respect for him. Almost all of the humor seems forced (except that coming from Chad when he is on the show), the opinions are about as interesting as a wet piece of cardboard, and the useful information has completely disappeared. In addition, as somebody that goes back to watching NASCAR on Wide World of Sports since 1970 when I was only five years old, I certainly do not need to be lectured as to what I consider to be good, entertaining racing.

As for "Mr. Excitement," it has been too much to try to shoehorn his big personality into the show with Mikey's already there in the forefront. What the show needs is some breathing room, and the addition of Spencer does not provide that. It's like standing near the Texas coast in August being totally oppressed by the overbearing heat and humidity and one just waits for the refreshing cool breezes that used to be provided by Schrader, Benson, and AB that gave the show such great balance and freedom during its glory days.

So, to be completely honest, I watched just a few scant minutes of tonight's TWIN before that lack of respect I now have fully kicked in. I switched over to the hockey game on Versus and I will never watch TWIN again until Mikey, Spencer, and Byrnes are all gone (I mostly like Steve, but he should have been more forceful in his questioning about Talledega and at least tried to play a good-natured Devil's advocate when he had to know full well that fans were howling about the race and how it was covered).

TWIN is a joke. It never needed fixing in the first place. Since Speed won't put it back right and restore it to the form that made it so successful and I now feel like I am being talked down to instead of listening in on a friendly conversation, I will fix it by reducing yet again the amount of time that I watch Speed...which is now very little compared to years past I am sad to say.

As for Race Hub, I caught just the last segment of it. It shows promise from what little I got to see. Maybe it would make a good replacement for TWIN.

As for NASCAR Now with AB at the helm...it's amazing how great the show is while ESPN's actual race coverage is so bad. I wonder if anybody at Speed/Fox/NewsCorp ever regrets letting AB move over to ESPN/ABC where, with just one right move, he could be giving Mike Joy a big run for his money.

I love NASCAR Now. It is one of, if not the best NASCAR news shows that I have ever seen. I feel like others who have said that it is amazing that the race coverage can be so bad and the studio shows can be so good. I enjoy the fact that they are becoming more comfortable with the show. I though that it was hilarious when Ray E. said that he asked ESPN for a "packer" and since it was ESPN, they gave him a Green Bay Packer helmet.

Race Hub is growing on me. The first one was horrendous, but since then I try to catch an episode when I can and I have noticed that it is getting better. I don't really like the fake "garage" conversations that they try to portray as spontaneous. They look like high school drama students when they do that. Also, I understand that they are "softballing" the guests now, but I hope that in the future they will delve a little deeper than the normal sponsor news and new paint schemes. Sort of like the Wendy V. segments on the SPEED pre race show. Other than that, I think the show has potential.

It would probably be best if I don't comment on TWIN. I do hope for its improvement, but my current opinion of it would just offend 90% of the readers of this blog including Mr. Daly.

I normally will watch NN, but usually try to avoid it with Boris Sedd because in my opinion, he brings nothing to the table where Randy LaJoy is irreverently funny. I quit on TWIN after AB, Johnny and Kenny were unceremoniously dumped and used to be a MW fan, but his mouth and his incessant backing NASCAR at all costs have left me dry and refuse to watch it. I do enjoy the 7:30 show but don't always think to watch it and will take some doing and hope that it continues during the off season.

I always watch ESPN's NASCAR Now. It's informative and I really don't mind that interviews/guests are not in-studio. Make fun of the suits and ties, but there's something refreshing about a group of grownups talking coherently and making relevant points. And the panelists do seem to be having fun exchanging opinions.

I occasionally watch Race Hub. It's not bad but honestly, the set is a distraction. All that forced casualness just makes everyone look uncomfortable especially when they're standing 10 feet apart for an interview. But this show does seem to be a nice balance between ESPN's polish and TWIN's clownishness. I do hope it continues to air during the offseason so there's some racing news on TV and if so, I hope Race Hub resists the normal SPEED tendency to just cheer-lead and ignore unpleasant NASCAR news.

I just can't fight through TWIN anymore. Look, I'm all for fun and laughs and I love Steve Byrnes but it's too silly. Anyone with anything of interest to say has to battle to finish their sentences and so many potentially insightful comments get cut off. It's just not for me anymore.

MRM4 said...

Here's an idea. On race coverage, get rid of Brad Daughtery and replace him with Ricky Craven. I always thought Craven was well-spoken during his racing days. He's a natural.

Anonymous said...

I like NN by far the best...I keep forgetting RH, and yes, they need a 2nd airing. Allen is great, as is Ray. I like Boris, but he's not just comic relief, he is improving...several times the last few weeks (notably describing Martinsville) he has offered some insight into how the drivers actually drive on parts of the racetrack. Despite what some people think, he does know what he's talking about in respect to that. Craven is first rate, I like MRM4's suggestion, but I can't see them giving up their 'diversity'. I like Brad, but he's really just a great cheerleader. Let him sit out with the fans and do some interviews or give him a short 1-1 with a driver.

I have TWIN on PIP. Not a Spencer fan, not a big Mikey fan, and when he goes on about something like he's an expert when he's not he comes across like a 'know it all' til Chad corrects him, then he looks like an idiot. Sorta the same with Jimmy. I like the Biff but I just don't think he's animated enough for this show. He has more knowledge than MW or JS though. I think it's interesting that as busy as he is, Chad makes time for this show. He must really enjoy the TV work.

It's Race Hub and TWIN for me.

I've tried NN several times and keep trying, I just can't get into the buttoned up slick production.

I like Ricky Craven and the Race Wizard alot. I just can't get comfortable with the overall "feel" of the show.

(I get my Evernham fix on Tuesdays at 5pm CST on Sirius Speedway with Moody & Co).

Regarding the "Slick" production, that leads me to wonder why we get open collar logo shirts on the CWTS coverage, Practice, Qualifying, Trackside, Race Day, Victory lane, Twin, Race Hub and WT at SPEED,

Open collar logo shirts for the NW coverage on ESPN and back to the stuffed shirt and ties for the Cup races?

Quite honestly, I keep waiting to see the Mustard colored sport coats and matching ties show up on Sundays again.

I DVR all three shows. Just got done TWIN.
I'm also calling for a later repeat of RaceHub, sometimes my DVR fritzes.
NN Mon: I watch this show for AB, Ray and Ricky. I prefer Randy way over Boris, but that's just because I like Randy's humor as well as blunt opinion. Boris is trying, but he's too easy to bait. The button down look doesn't bother me any more than the casualness of the other 2 shows. I like the info NN gives as post race analysis, wish there were fewer flashback and more talking, but they get good interviews and have decent discussions.
TWIN: The reason I watch this show is because 2 panelists each time are actual race participants. I value their opinions, even if I don't agree. I look at MW more as an owner these days and would prefer his view as that. Biff and Chad's takes are what I pay attention to as far as post race analysis by the people in it. Don't like Chad but he's fair. Spencer was a good addition, for another perspective from a former driver (he's no Ricky) I like his blunt opinions, again even when I don't agree. I think MW has toned down since Spence's arrival, and for me that's a good thing. Steve tries valiantly to reign these guys in, it can be awkward but I don't mind. Again I wish there were less playbacks, and more discussion, the Q&As are good.
RaceHub: As I mentioned before, this show is doing exactly what I want, a touch on the day but main focus on stories and interviews of the people across all of NASCAR not just Cup. Its had ups and downs but overall, I think its going in a good direction. Just need that re-air!

I getting hooked on Monday's NASCAR Now. And this Monday was no exception -- even though I'm not that fond of Boris. Ray and Ricky were informative and articulate.

The Packer helmet had me howling. But I loved Ray's show and tell with the shock packer --- now I know what it is, where it is, and what it does. Thanks, Ray.

Oddly enough, the suits and ties don't even register with me any more.

I like the more polished, sophisticated, professional appearance of NASCAR Now, than the trashy, low rent show SPEED produces. SPEED is just talking down to the audience, thinking NASCAR fans are just a bunch of hicks.

Nothing can replace the days of Schrader,Benson, Waltrip, and Bestwick. Last nights TWIN was as close as they've come. After hours and hours of coverage on Sunday it is nice to get some insight with some entertainment and comraderie. Part of Nascar's appeal has always been the "fun buddy movie" aspect you don't have with other sports. TWIN and Trackside are the only place you can still find people enjoying racing. I hope the TWIN panel stays the same. God Bless Steve Byrnes. He does a difficult job well. I love Raceday as well but I think they could try a 4th person to shakeup that dynamic. RaceHub is just too awkward to watch. I hope that improves. Nascar Now is too much of a repeat of information we've seen all weekend on the other shows. Lastly why doesn't someone take advantage of Kyle Petty. He's interesting, refreshing and Brilliant.

I'm not a regular watcher of any of the shows any more. Motormouth has ruined TWIN for me and since he's become a complete and total NASCAR shill, he offers no reason to pay attention to any words that come out of his mouth. I think I stopped watching after the first time that he insulted the fans. I miss Schrader, too. You could count on him to keep Mikey's nonsense in check.

Like NASCAR, MW needs to wake up to the fact that "no fans, nobody to watch". I wonder what the ratings are for TWIN?

I wasn't impressed with Racehub, but it sounds like it may be improving, so I'll set the DVR up and see if I like it better than I did the first time.

NN comes on too early and although I think AB, Craven and Evernham are great together, I just can't get past the fact that it is ESPN. I don't even DVR this program any more, too much production not enough substance.

Sunday's overkill of pre-race is borderline stupid. How many times can you say the same thing? Four hours worth apparently. The only thing I watched was Wendy's Real Deal segment since I like the job that she always does on that. Otherwise, Raceday has become a joke and I can't be bothered with ESPN's countdown since it is downright boring.

I have generally been a fan/supporter of MW, especially regarding his TWIN role.

I like his general attitude of "we're here to have some fun." I can tolerate, and often appreciate, his silliness.

But, even I have had entirely enough of his NASCAR executive apologism.

Mikey, NASCAR executives can and do make mistakes. Stop pretending they don't, and be willing to criticize them when they do.

I will grant you that there are some people who are too negative when it comes to their criticisms, but MW is going too far in the other direction.

Otherwise, the show is generally good. Recently, with the addition of Jimmy Spencer, it has often felt too rushed, as the director is apparently trying to prod them along.

RPM 2 Night and Inside Winston Cup...wait what? You mean those got canceled? Oh darn, how about Totally NASCAR? That too?!

Yeahhhhh, haven't been able to ever totally devote myself to any NASCAR daily stuff since. Hub has been good when I've seen it, NN is okay when I've seen that as well. But I don't go out of my way to catch either.

I'm inclined to agree except then I remember that ESPN is the network that gives us Lee Corso dressing up in mascot costumes and Chris Berman with his "back back back" bit. NASCAR Now might be buttoned-up but as a network ESPN sure can serve up its own fair share of buffoonery.

I always look forward to the Monday NASCAR Now. The round table has been really excellent all year. Whoever said they delete when they see Boris Said is missing out, he has really improved and has great comments.

RaceHub seems like a mess to me. I will come back next season after they have worked out the kinks. Too many pre-taped segments that recap old news, not enough real analysis, and so far they have had ZERO of the access to drivers they promised they'd have by being in Charlotte. It's not a must-watch show.

As for TWIN, it's gotten better with a third person there, but they are always cutting off the panel to get to the clips. Unlike NASCAR Now, which uses the clips to set up the discussion, on TWIN the discussion is all about setting up the clips. I'm also getting tired of Waltrip's pro-NASCAR rants. I actually like NASCAR and disagree with many of the bashers who always criticize the organization. But that's different than being a blind cheerleader, especially one who interrupts other panelists to tell us how exciting a Fontana race is going to be or to tell us again how exciting a boring race was. I tune out when I feel like the analyst is telling me what he should say.

Anonymous said...

The biggest problem with TWIN is not Motormouth Waltrip, whose act has gone from funny to annoying. The biggest problem is Steve Byrnes.

Steve doesn't have any control over the show. He has no control over the panel. He has no ability to moderate. He doesn't even decide when to roll clips, that is done in his earpiece.

I'd feel a little more sympathy for Byrnes if he put up an effort. But frankly, he seems more interested in making Notre Dame jokes that only the panel gets. He needs to be able to cut off the panel when they go to long (like every time Waltrip begins with "This is what I love about NASCAR"). With Byrnes, you get the feeling that this is a guy who has fully crossed the line and is not a journalist covering a sport, but someone who considers himself a part of the sport. He's not going to ask tough questions, because he isn't going to upset his golf buddies Knaus and Waltrip. The way he talks about hanging out with them, the way he makes inside jokes with them, he's just a shill.

Concerning Sunday race coverage -

Wouldn't it be a great idea to have the network invite 3 of us from The Daly Planet to be part of the Tuesday production conference call ?

Some race horses won't run their best race until they take the blinkers OFF.

It's time for the networks to take their own blinkers / blinders OFF and really take advantage of what the race fans really want to see on a race weekend.

For instance, we seemingly always hear and see the same stuff when we go to a given track.

This weekend, we'll hear about Rattlesnake Mountain outside of turn 4. Probably send Rutledge up to the mountain to do some kind of spoofy skit.

ESPN will wear out the phrase "Valley of the Sun" & "Wild West Shootout".
Someone will probably go to that "wild west" movie set location in Tucson and tape a goofy gun fight.

We've seen all this stuff for years and years. I'm holding out hope that ABC / ESPN & SPEED can surprise us with something truly interesting this weekend.

Its time to changes things up people. TV ratings are dropping every single weekend. Tracks are seeing more empty seats than they have in 20 years. Race teams are laying off and terminating people as we speak.

Concentrate on keeping those of us who have been backing this sport for 20, 30 plus years interested.

It's obvious that there aren't ANY "new fans" coming on board, you, being NASCAR and the TV executives, are quickly losing a heckuva lot more than your gaining.

Do us a favor and please show us an attempt, at least, that you're willing to alter your direction from the TV side of things.

Your fans just may have some great ideas, if you'd be willing to listen to us.

For free I'll go ahead and give the networks a trivia question they can use on the air this weekend.... (lets see if any of us hear this or see this at Phoenix)

In NASCAR's modern era, what driver has the most Top 5 finishes on a 1 mile speedway ??
answer: Mark Martin - 32 top 5's

I agree with that 100%. He would be the best thing on any of these shows. But the TV people don't want him on these types of shows because he's too opinionated. We saw ESPN get called to the office last week along with McReynolds, Petty, and others for saying what's on their mind. We need more of that, but apparently NASCAR doesn't want it because everything is fine according to them.

I never saw the original IWC so TWIN works just fine for me. I prefer it with Chad but The Biff is doing just fine, he's grown on me with the way he has dealt with being on the wrong side of the chase "line". Yes Mikey can go off the rails but Chad and even Greg are doing a better job of getting their point across. Jimmy is much better here than on RD but he sometimes gets me confuseled. If I could only watch 1 Monday show it would be TWIN but since I can watch them all.... Race Hub gets better every day and while it may be the smaller teams that we see in the Hub I'm good with that. Krista and RP have good chemistry but I don't really dislike anyone and it's always fun when Ray D shows up. NN is starting to get a little less regimented and I think much of that is due to continuity. Boris doesn't totally aggravate me as he once did but I don't listen well when he speaks now when the 3 R's are there it's the perfect balance. Ray is NN's Chad and I like him very much in this role, he's another one that can explain things without talking down to me yet I still understand, that's important to me because I want to understand but I have NO car knowledge except for what I learned through the Nascar shows I watch. Would prefer they lose the ties but to be honest AB would look funny without one now.

"Blinders, also known as blinkers or winkers, are a piece of horse tack that restrict the horse's vision to the rear and, in some cases, to the side."

back to the shows,

I am sorry to see the same old bashing at personalities on TWIN but find it out of line to rip into Steve Byrnes. The producers tell he and the others when to move on to video or whatever.

AB NEVER had control over IWC & folks loved it.

To whomever brought up the NASCAR HUB SET as a distraction, I think that's what keeps me from tuning in, and the overacting on casualness...the roaming the stages.

Just let the hosts SIT in some decent chairs and TALK.

Like the comfy chairs on TWIN.

Now the high stools of a few years back. Set designers, Grown men and women should never sit in high chairs. It's not fittin'. Glad others are enjoying the hub, but I am just so over this season, thus not really interested in anything at this point.

I DVR all 3 monday shows. NN and TWIN are longtime favorites, although I have begun to get tired of the constant cheerleading on TWIN. I have been a MW fan for years. It is NOT exciting racing for the fans, no matter what Mikey says.

I think Race Hub is becoming better each week, and may supplant TWIN.

JD, When Bestwick brought up Jr.'s having run so well only to run out of gas on 5 laps to go, Boris Said asked why did they run him out of gas? Which was never answered. Evernham jumped in with comments about that team had finally found "speed", without ever explaining why it took them 2 years when the other 3 team have had it all along. Could it be that what NN started reporting last spring, that Tony Jr. was still making Jr.'s cars from DEI specs from 2007? Craven jumps in with it takes time to run how to run in the top ten again. Junior is a proven winner and I am sure that it is like riding a bike, you don't forget. If Evernham and Craven want to go on nationwide tv and sound foolish that is their choice. It raise the question of how much HMS is paying them. Drop them both and bring in someone like LaJoie to go with Said who have a backbone and care about the truth.

I would like to add that with all the money Jr. is bringing in to HMS they can afford to hire him a top tier crew chief, like Addington, and pay him what he is worth. What are they doing with all the money Jr. is bringing in...? Does it all go to making the other 3 teams the top in Spring Cup? I would like to see an audit.

I agree Nascar now is the best out of the 3! Have to say though id much much rather see Randy Lajoie take the place of Boris. He seems sooo out of place on the monday edition of NN. Hes good when hes by himself but dosent come off well on the roundtable! I have a great thought maybe we show throw the combination of AB, Ricky Craven, and Ray Evernham in the booth for the races??? I think that would do wonders but just my thoughts. Also TWIN was great enjoy that show as well... Like seeing the Biff on the show hes better than Chad! the hub is not so good and I dont find myself enjoying it as much.

I also dvr all 3 ,I used to love IWC but I find myself watching more of AB and NN and fast forwarding TWIN mainly because of Mikey can't stand all of his BS. The HUB seems to be getting better every show.

We thought Pemberton & Krista were a good duo on Hub last night. I don't particularly like the couch, but I liked seeing Brian Scott & Todd Braun on the show. I really like NN on Monday's roundtable and AB, RE, RL & RC are a good team on there. I don't mind Boris so much either. We enjoy TWIN a lot although JB,KS & MW are the best. Don't particularly like Greg since he looks sometimes like a deer in the headlight look. Hopefully, they will still be on next year.

I make NN on Mon a must tape. Catch the last 10 mins the rest of the wk. Much better w/out Boris, imo. Hub is growing on me & I'm done w/Twin until they get rid of Mikey. Can't stand him kissing up to Nascar anymore. JS is an improvement, from the couple shows I saw w/him.

Dvr NN and watch it after dinner every night. Solid news & analysis. Watched RH a few times; not impressed but maybe I'd look in on it more if it re-aired at a better time. I'll watch some of TWIN if Chad is on, but I tire of SB and MW pretty soon and start channel surfing.

Hi folks, all we ask from your comments is that they do not contain hateful speech, foul language or derogatory comments.

This is a great platform to express your views on NASCAR TV issues directly to those who matter.

Thanks again for all the great comments on this post so far...

No NN for me, it's on ESPN.
Watched the first episode of RH, just didn't get into it.
Quit watching TWIN a couple months ago, still have it recording, just can't make myself watch right now.
Unless the DVR breaks I will have the 2009 Cup Series, VL, and TWIN on DVD.
Yea, some is from ESPN/ABC but I want to have this history making (maybe) season recorded.

I am giving up on RaceHub.

The straw that broke the camel's back was when Krista Voda looks at the TV image of Steve Byrnes and says "Steve, where are you?" And then the camera pulls back and says "I'm here, right behind you!" and then Krista has to act surprised like "Wow how did you do that?" instead of "I am a grown woman who could hear your voice standing next to me" or "That came off just like we rehearsed it before taping."

When RaceHub does these little skit type things it is like a giant insult to me as a viewer. They are either saying "You are too dumb to know this isn't scripted" or "You are so dumb you find this entertaining." Neither is true and I really really really wish they would stop.

At this point in the season, I'm totally burned out on Nascar coverage. You get hour after hour of the same video clips and the likes of Kenny Wallace and clueless 'pit reporters'. Monday's NN is always must-see for me. It's a solid analysis of the weekend's race. Ricky, Ray and Randy compliment Bestwick's hosting. Twin needs a total redo. Chad can be counted on to give an honest, but low key assessment of the race and Spencer does much better than he does on Raceday. Biffle has gotten better, but Byrnes and Waltrip need to go. It would be refreshing to have a program where it was allowable to criticize Nascar, the Cot, Goodyear and the drivers. But don't hold your breath!

I don't understand why you deleted my comment on the irony of NN being hosted by former Speed talent and commentators

Whats "hatefull" or "off topic" about that?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anon, just drop me an email at editor@thedalyplanet.tv and I will be happy to help you out.

Thanks!

Michael Waltrip ruins any TV event by his presence, so I don't watch if he is involved. Spencer, DW and Larry "Rat Now" Mac are in the same category. These fools have driven many viewers away.

DW was smart enough to be calling TV the "big dog" back in 1981. Now the big dog is hurting the sport with too many talking heads riding the gravy train on way too much coverage.

Bestwick and Evernham are the best in the crowded field by far. As the bloated coverage inevitably shrinks due to lack of viewership and sponsor funds, I hope these two guys don't jump from the sinking ship and hang around.

As a Canadian, we dont have access to NASCAR Now so I cant say anything about that program, we do get Speed.

I had pretty much boycotted TWIN since it was Schrader-less and for a while my only TV came via antenna. Since we had cable put back in I had a chance to watch TWIN after the Talladega race, what I heard from Mikey and Knaus made me want to reach through my screen and give them both a fat lip. I won't watch again.

As for RaceHub, I haven't seen a full episode yet so I wont comment other than to say I liked what little I have seen.

I like that Race Hub is on later in the evening. Nascar Now is on too early and I've missed it by the time I get home from work.
