Anybody notice the "crowd" or typical California lack of it?

Daly Planet Editor said...

thanks MV, I have been watching that. Pretty good of them to hang in there with no money.

Anonymous said...

I bet NASCAR hates it when Marty Reid calls out a start and park. I love that!

boyd said...

Glad to have the field wrap up, instead of Danica low lights.
Doc, great pit reporting!
Don't need full screen in car of her.
Is she causing Jr. fans to turn against him?

@JD - Maybe the money they got from Menard / Roush last week for withdrawing Fuller's #97 entry is going to go a long way.

Didn't tune into NASCAR until after the Gators beat Ole Miss. Caught most of the 2nd practice and Happy Hour, now watching the DaniWide race.

I was going to focus on the race, but heard enough about Danica during Cup practice - the Cup vets need to get over their love affair with Danica.

If it wasn't for JD asking Dustin Long who got the Lucky Dog after the first caution, I wouldn't know.

I've got things to do. Don't want to waste my time. I'm going to leave The Deuce on, but won't sit and watch.

Hopefully everyone will get Ms. Patrick out of their system today.

GOOD GRIEF! She's how many laps down, running 33rd, yet had her radio w/ Tony Jr, and now Brewer explaining the issue.

How 'bout we talk about the guys THAT MIGHT ACTUALLY WIN THE RACE!

That's it. I'm done. Later Gators!

Anonymous said...

What lap will the next phantom debris caution come out?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Good to know male and female fans are equally out of their minds over Danica...lol.

Bye, Shirley!

The Loose Wheel said...

MV I think it was reported Nemecheck is going to try and run the full NW schedule, or at least the car is. I'm sure once the stand alones come up that car will probably get leased out to an up-and-comer that fields their own equipment. He did alot with no money last year too it was just that flip at Nashville that messed their season up

boyd said...

Wow just showed stands from blimp. Sparse crowd.
Why did they move Darlingtons date out here?

Vicky D said...

And then we get to see Tim's jewelry again oh he had some tape in his hand.

Anonymous said...

Oh jeez the Las Vegas Race is sponsored by Go Daddy.com We all know what that means. They buy commercial time and the #7 gets the TV time.

Sally said...

boyd...because they need a 'strong presence in the biggest TV market'. Quality of the product has never held Nascar back from making silly decisions. Just think of KC having 2 races next year...because they are building a casino! Perfect reason to award a date, eh?

boyd said...

It might be a better idea than this is.
Attendence at this track has decreased every year, at least at Kansas, they almost sell out.

Anonymous said...

The casino, and the fact that ISC and the France family owns Kansas and Calif as well.

boyd said...

Anyone else see the scoring pylon? Showed cars 3 laps down, but the 7 car didn't show anything although she was behind them.

GinaV24 said...

The braintrust currently running NASCAR (that would be Brian France) thought that the crowds would be better at California for terrible racing than great racing at Darlington.

I was at the last Southern 500 on Labor Day and it was one HOT day, baby, but I sure did enjoy the race and seeing Terry Labonte win it.

The backlash of the old school fans from that move of the race away from Darlington is still affecting NASCAR.

We went back the following year for the race that was in November and I saw race fans from everywhere who had bought tickets and come to the race at Darlington just because they were mad at NASCAR.

We haven't missed a race there since. The crowds for the one race (on Mother's Day weekend - which was supposed to be the kiss of death for the track) are great. I'd love to see them put the Southern 500 BACK at Darlington on Labor Day weekend -- run the sucker at night - Saturday or Sunday, I don't care.

Richard in N.C. said...

As I recall Fontana was lauded as a super facility when opened and, at least for Cup, used to sell out when it had just 1 date.

Daly Planet Editor said...

We talked about this for the past two years. No matter what they do, this is a rough track for TV.

GinaV24 said...

I worry about them taking a race from Martinsville instead of doing the right thing for racing and taking one from California. One race here might draw a better crowd because it would be part of the supply and demand business model. But then NASCAR would have to admit it is wrong.

Jonathan said...

I tell you something they can do... give this track some banking and turn it into a superspeedway!

Daly Planet Editor said...

How about this one? Caution for debris...in a pit stall!!

GinaV24 said...

OK, I just changed the channel as ESPN once again is focusing on Danica -- who cares that she got caught speeding? Do I really need to hear her radio about it?

Focus on the race. Can I go back yet?

Richard in N.C. said...

Hearing very little about DP on MRN.

boyd said...

@jonathon,
The promotor talked about that a year or two ago, making it just like Daytona.
Why throw good money after bad. Just make it like NFL, and don't have it out there.

Jonathan said...

I care that she got caught speeding. Hey shes in the race and it happened during the race. so why wouldnt they broadcast it?

GinaV24 said...

So are the crowds bad at Kansas, too? Is that why they want a casino? to draw fans who are spending money while not watching the race?

Sally said...

I guess Carl isn't any better at pit road speed than Danica?

GinaV24 said...

@Sally - did they play Edwards radio?

Sally said...

ISC is helping finance the casino. The crowd at Kansas isn't bad...but who knows if they will go the way of Cali with 2 dates?

Vicky D said...

Wow Carl just wants this race over too fast! Poor Carl.

Sally said...

Yes. Carl said they must be off on their RPM's for pit road speed.

Jonathan said...

yeah and they showed his in car and played some audio feed. see they do this w everyone who gets caught speeding not just Danica.

Richard in N.C. said...

MRN just announced that DP is 3 laps down, and on to next subject.

GinaV24 said...

I think that NASCAR's rapid expansion, plus the lousy racing, really affected their ability to draw a crowd. Sure the economy is not helping, but one way to work with that would be to cut back on the schedule - one race at each track, then you'd have a commodity that was more scarce and it might help increase crowds.

Having been to Pocono-that's a prime example of a track that doesn't need 2 races - dear heavens save me from boring. I went twice - have refused to go again, mainly because the sight lines are so terrible from the stands.

Just my 2 cents.

boyd said...

Carl Edwards figured it out!
Speed down pit road like Danica and you get TV time.

Jonathan said...

see Gina so come back to ESPN I dont understand how that could get under your skin so much that you have to turn the station. Nothing on my tv comes close to this and heck its CALI (not the greatest track) but nothing beats nascar. Wheres the love wow oh my 5 secs of hearing cars go by i almost feel over. ESPN needs sounds of the race

Anonymous said...

SOOO nice to not have the restart ruined by the Full Throttle crap. Thank you very much for listening ESPN.

GinaV24 said...

Jonathan -- LOL, Ok, I'm back! I do think that ESPN is doing a good job of calling this race. At least they are showing the racing and since they did equal opportunity with Edwards, I feel better.

jonathan said...

ALRIGHT thats better Gina :) im going to shut up now and watch the end of this race. enjoy everyone

Daly Planet Editor said...

Weird we did not get a Lucky Dog update on that caution...again...

Anonymous said...

No Lucky Dog or Wave Around updates huh?

GinaV24 said...

holy mackerel did Marty Reid just admit that the racing is usually boring? Wow, NASCAR will probably smack him for that.

He's right, this has been a pretty good race by comparison to others that I've slept through. The Cup guys are going to have a hard act to follow

boyd said...

So glad we're not having Danica stuffed down our throats as bad as it could be.
There are only 5 cars still running behind her.

Vicky D said...

I love that commercial with Logano, Waltrip & Truex. The look on Truex's face is priceless.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Bires up to 8th, awesome payback for Daytona.

Jonathan said...

any predicitons on the ratings for this race do you think this will get big ratings like the daytona race?

Vicky D said...

Good run for Bires - glad ESPN noticed him. And what a great blue color too.

GinaV24 said...

JD, I've been looking at Bires, too. That is great news. I hope he gets a good finish today especially with the Cup guys in the race.

Anonymous said...

Marty Reid is really a breath of fresh air. He shoots straight and just tells it like it is, good or bad. He's really the "voice of the fan" (sorry Brad). Much more pleasing to the ears than the PC crap Fox/Speed always gives us. The "start-and-parks aren't a bad thing" talk and "DW wasn't really cheering for Junior last week" talk from the Fox booth the past few days has been nauseating.

boyd said...

This isn't a marquee event, so the ratings will be so, so.
Maybe a small bump, but don't think so.

Vicky D said...

Danica is in Derrick Cope's territory. Guess they won't talk about him though.

Daly Planet Editor said...

That's why it is confusing that Marty did not mention the Lucky Dog or update the wave arounds....

Jonathan said...

HA dont compare Danica to Cope cause Cope would of been out of the race 112 laps ago mr start and park. Cope needs to go far far away, hand the keys to the cope sisters HOT HOT HOT!!!

Vicky D said...

Harvick is going to be upset!

Sally said...

Did everyone see Kyle's comments from last week at Daytona? He was complaining they spent too much time on Danica, and should have been giving time to the teams that need sonsors, etc. Funny he didn't seem concerned last year when the spotlight was on him to the exclusion of the 'regulars'.

Richard in N.C. said...

If you could have eavesdropped, I suspect there were a lot of EESPN, SMI, ISC, TNT, and other people cheering for Dale Jr.

GinaV24 said...

wow, they were going to break and caught that action. I'm impressed.

Vicky D said...

Dot's fav just spins

Sally said...

JWT is back to his old tricks again. Hope his dad is paying RCR lots of money to run him.

GinaV24 said...

I did catch that article where Kyle was complaining about the coverage of Danica. I almost snorted the tea I was drinking out my nose.

Pot, please meet Kettle! Considering the overkill of coverage that KyBu gets in the Nationwide series.

Vicky D said...

Sally your thoughts were right on.

GinaV24 said...

Anon - totally agree!

boyd said...

Nice triple pits. ESPN did good with NNS last year, lets hope it carries over to NSCS.
Liking the Marty Reid.

Jonathan said...

I hear they may debut the spoiler on the cup car in Phoenix?? That would be sweet cause im there every year for the Subway race that would be great

Ann_Ominous said...

Back from the grocery store... I see I haven't missed much... Danica 3 laps down but still getting talked about... cars still strung out... CAUTION!!!

I do think ESPN's coverage in general is much improved this year (except for a tad too much Danica), but this track is just too hard to make look good on tv.

Maybe the finish will be better.

And it still looks great in HD, but that is not all that matters!!

Daly Planet Editor said...

I think they got the message. Marty is a solid broadcaster.

GinaV24 said...

Jonathan, there sure has been a lot of speculation when they will first run the spoiler instead. I won't be at Phoenix, but it sure would be fun to see the 1st race with it in real life.

We've been talking about coming out to a race there - how is it to get in and out of the track in Phoenix?

Anonymous said...

Thought ESPN might try to slip in Full Throttle there too. Hopefully this means 2007-2009 ESPN is a distant memory!

Sally said...

I'm impressed with the improvement ESPN has made in their coverage. There's only so much you can do with a race at Cali, but they're doing a good job to try and cover most of the field.

Jonathan said...

sucks for Ricky

The Loose Wheel said...

Gina, getting in isn't so bad if your early enough. Getting out give yourself 2 hours. Haven't done a Cup race there, but it took roughly an hour to get to the highway after the Nationwide race.

It's better than it used to be, but still getting out your looking at 2 hours depending on how far from the track your staying or if your driving home

GinaV24 said...

It's good seeing the Nationwide regulars getting some coverage by ESPN in this race.

GinaV24 said...

Of course, they are running well, too, so that is a double nice thing.

boyd said...

Tuned in for Danicathon. Got enough of the 29th place car. Then went to JGRathon.
Like that Marty keeps telling us that this is better than other years. That's kind of sad for ACS.

Vicky D said...

Still haven't mentioned my hometown hero Kligerman. Guess you either have to be on the lead lap, or 3 or more laps to be mentioned/seen.

GinaV24 said...

Thanks, David. Well, that is not atypical of trying to get out of any track after a race.

I guess I'd better make sure to take the GPS with us.

Anonymous said...

people who are not race fans tuning in just to see Danica will not become race fans after seeing this. Cali track doesn't make for excitment, its a bore fest.

Anonymous said...

Schedule shake up in 2011. Surely NASCAR has the message and this track will go down to one race.

Vicky D said...

Anon at 7:37 - I agree with you on that comment.

GinaV24 said...

so in other words, KyBu is all about payback and figures that if he was leading and lost, the same thing should happen to other drivers.

Sad excuse.

Jonathan said...

I know Marty keeps saying this race is better than most here but from what i can recall the Ocotber Nationwide rac was one of the best nationwide races of 09

Remember DP you said how one of the greatest nationwide races of 09 was brought down by bad espn coverage?

GinaV24 said...

Anon, we can only hope, but I really doubt it. It would be a good idea, therefore it is unlikely to happen.

Richard in N.C. said...

It never ceases to amaze me that just about every new track built in the past 15 or 20 years has had to be rebuilt before there was good racing - even though Cal was supposed to be almost a copy of Michigan and then Michigan had some of the best racing.

I know it's just a footnote, but D. Cope deserves some credit for still running.

GinaV24 said...

geez, what is the deal iwth Menard?

Anonymous said...

Roger Penske was no dummy. He unloaded it to ISC

boyd said...

Yeah, Paul Menard just got full screen for being an idiot.

GinaV24 said...

oh boy, restart with just a few laps to go. Nailbiting time.

Vicky D said...

Good spin control by Brendan. He wanted to get the lucky dog too bad.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Hey, ESPN was ready for action but unfortunately....there was none!

Anonymous said...

2 for 2 today. Can always count on John Wes and Brenden Gaughan.

GinaV24 said...

Boyd, maybe that was his intention. All press is good press?

boyd said...

@GinaV24
Danica has proved that.
So why not.

GinaV24 said...

@boyd -- LOL Dale Jr & KyBu too!

boyd said...

I think that JP has brought the level of the other pit reporters up a little bit.
Haven't heard a feel question yet.

Sally said...

The Loose Wheel said...

Sally said...

Rats.

Anonymous said...

OMG that shot of the #7 car crossing the line at 31st place takes the cake.

GinaV24 said...

wow, that was an exciting finish. Did Kez spin out Joey?

Anonymous said...

Boy that was unfortunate for TV to miss the 27 getting into the 20. TV 101 - when the leaders are side-by-side keep the focus on them.

Sally said...

Was that really acloseup of Kyle giving the crowd the finger????

Anonymous said...

Gurr... ESPN still refuses to show every car finish. The flying heads still need to go.

Richard in N.C. said...

I wonder whether Kyle would have raced Joey as hard. I would expect not.

Still have not heard on MRN where DP finished, or even if she was still on the track when the green fell.

The Loose Wheel said...

Brad K strikes again.

alex said...

I just got home and turned on the race from the beginning... Two thoughts:

a) when David Reuitmann wrecked in 2007 at Fontana we gave FOX a bit of grief for showing an in-car shot before we knew he was awake and alert. I'm a bit surprised ESPN showed that same in-car shot today.

b) Hands down, that was the most ridiculous "Drivers start your engines" I've ever heard.

Frank said...

I'd say, "I can't beleive they cut away from the leaders and Logano spinning to show Danica finishing 30th and 3 laps down." but I'm not suprised at all.

Jonathan said...

WOW WOW Joey vs Biffle here we go. I never saw Logano so pd off awsome finish... I dont mind CALI its a nice track wish people actually came to the track. Great race wooooo

GinaV24 said...

heck, all the front cars were running together, it is hard to believe they missed it until they showed the spin. A decent broadcast for ESPN - good pit reporting.

Kez takes no prisoners but he sooner or later, payback is going to be the proverbial b****.

I can turn it off now, don't need to listen to Shrubby be interviewed.

Anonymous said...

Typical ESPN tries to stalk an fustrated Danica. At least they didn't send a reporter along this time.

Anonymous said...

Shame that a great day of racing got ruined in the last 2 laps. Missed the original contact in turn 1 on the restart, only saw the first 2 cars finish, then immediately cut to a car running by itself in 31st place.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Walk off?????

Jonathan said...

SO JD i know you gave ESPN grear reviews for Daytona, whats your thoughts on this race and the coverage of the race from ESPN?

jONATHAN said...

great*

Daly Planet Editor said...

Solid. Nothing to cover. Bad cam choices at finish.

Sophia said...

Why is Joey so mad at Biff? He didn't wreck him...I go into the LR to watch end of race on big HD tv..and come back to room after race and online MRN APOLOGIZING for all the foul language?! Who cussed on radio? Why isn't joey mad at BK???

Clueless

Sophia said...

horrible cam at the finish...did they ever show the wrecking of BK and Joey...we saw it happening and they switched cameras.

WHY wasn't BK interviewed. now I'm done.

Anonymous said...

Fitting end to today's discussion of NASCAR.com's ineptness... went to the site and clicked their unofficial results link to see the final results and got a "page not found" message. Well oiled machine this group is not. NASCAR needs to do something about this.

GinaV24 said...

sophia, you ask the questions that I'd like to have answered too.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Well, that was interesting. See you all tomorrow for the Cup race!!

Thanks!!

Sophia said...

I watched little of the race, listened on radio online only (LOVE.MRN!)

I went to Y earlier and asked to have one of the tv's turned to different station. Black guy working there asked "You want the LIFETIME channel on??!@##%" wth?
I said, "No, the race!" Turns out the guy is from Charlotte and grew up with NASCAR so we had a fun short chat. :)
but from what I saw ESPN had decent camera work?

Did they cut back on the in car cams?

Why. WHY. WHY? Does Fox/ESPN "Suits" push the in car cams. Now that we have DVR, we will NOT sit thru the races & watch all the adds/crappy cam work.

Neo Luddite turned INSTANT DVR snob Soph. :-D
My house mate uses that tv all the time and is enjoying the DVR & HD immensely !

GinaV24 said...

Sophia -- your reaction sounds like mine would have been. Lifetime, indeed! talk about stereotyping - LOL

Anonymous said...

Can't believe how terribly directed the finish of the race was. That was Artie Kempner bad. Why in the world would you focus on Reutimann's bad restart? He wasn't a player in the finish at all. Dumb dumb dumb. And Marty Reid couldn't stop tripping over himself throughout the entire race. JD, I'm sure you probably worked with him before/are friends with him, but he's barely any better than Punch. He's got energy but has no clue wasn't going on and can't put a solid sentence together to save his life.

Bad race til the finish, bad track, unsurprisingly another bad broadcast from ESPN. They cant change the booth all the want, the people in the truck still are the main cause of the problems. But Marty Reid certainly doesn't help. Punch is great back on pit road, but we need Allen Bestwick up there, that man knows how to call a race.
