Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series From Atlanta (12PM - FOX)

The Sprint Cup Series continues the 2010 season at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. The weather is clear and the track is fast.

Chris Myers opens the FOX coverage with the pre-race show from the Hollywood Hotel. He will be joined by Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Hammond. Last week saw more disorganization and less of a focus on the stories of the race. Comedy and inside jokes are pushing this show in a very different direction.

Perhaps, FOX is again seeking to entertain the exclusive casual fan, but after three hours of hardcore NASCAR pre-race news on ESPN2 and SPEED, it's just not working. Myers jokes are not funny and there is very little focus. Hopefully, the show gets back on track after a rough start.

Mike Joy, Darrell Waltrip and Larry McReynolds have been working this weekend on SPEED. They have already hosted the practice sessions and qualifying for the Sprint Cup Series. As they transition from SPEED to FOX, perhaps they can keep the momentum of the week going strong.

On pit road are Krista Voda, Steve Byrnes, Matt Yocum and Dick Berggren. Atlanta has a lot of action, so the reporters will be chasing strategy calls as the race progresses. The leaders can lap quickly here, so keeping viewers updated on the field will be continually important.

FOX has Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman coming from the back of the pack after engine changes. The network has Dale Earnhardt Jr. starting from the pole. They have Jimmie Johnson seeming to be bulletproof. This season, Kevin Harvick and RCR have found themselves and are running strong. There is no shortage of storylines from the drop of the green flag.

Darrell Waltrip holds the key to this race telecast. When he keeps himself in check and acts as a good teammate, things flow well. When he gets emotional and goes overboard with his comments, things fall apart. TV viewers have seen him do both this season.

Atlanta is so fast that it does not lend itself to using the in-car cameras live until the field gets strung out. The low level speed shots are tremendously effective on restarts and through the corners. Restarts on fresh tires are going to be the most exciting parts of the race. We saw that in the Saturday truck series race.

This post will serve to host your comments about the NASCAR on FOX coverage of the Sprint Cup Series race from the Atlanta Motor Speedway. To add your TV-related comment, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting.

Thank you for taking the time to join us today as we live blog the race.

see JD fox seems to be taking baby steps foward today

Interesting lead into that commercial break. They used footage from Kahne winning last Labor Day, which was on ESPN, but then used audio from an old Fox race to say Kahne wins.

Garry said...

I wonder how Hoosier Tires would react to this track? Just wondering.

Daniel Christopher Vining said...

looking ahead, do you think there will be a commercial with 20 laps to go?

KoHoSo said...

JD...no point of reference is exactly right. It's as if all they want to put on the screen is what looks "pretty" rather than what is telling a story. They are confusing fans whether they be hardcore 40-year ones like me or casual 2-year ones like my girlfriend.

GinaV24 said...

Going to go do something useful, like make dinner since obviously my driver is having a terrible day.

That tends to ruin my enjoyment in watching the race -- I know, I know, watch the race, not the man, but boy that's really hard.

jonathan said...

someone needs to just say screw it and take out Johnson. Why not whats the worst that can happen, you know how much exposer they would get??? Just a thought that entered my mind.

Anonymous said...

If #48 pulls this one out - TV ratings will drop more and more - as well as attendence at the track. There is really nothing compelling to keep steady interest.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Been that way for the last three races...

Sally said...

Wouldn't it be nice if we had a reference as to who is how many laps down right about now?

OSBORNK said...

A Hendrick Motorsport debris caution.

MikeC said...

Jonathan, the reason no one will take Johnson out is because you'd start to be like a gang-mentality. You take my driver out, I'll take your driver out, and it would never stop.

Sally said...

HMS only has one car on the lead lap now, right?

GinaV24 said...

Jonathan, heck, if NASCAR wants a rivalry that would be one way to get it AND it would sure make me more interested.

If the 48 wins this race, I'm not sure what I'll do cuz it just hurts my heart and my head.

Daniel Christopher Vining said...

Just saw the new Kobalt Toolbox commercial. AWESOME. Same box I own & use at work. #nascar #TheSpeedzine "Kobalt 41" Toolbox FTW"

Garry said...

OsbornK:Once again I agree with you. I still wish to heck they would show a complete pit stop for whatever the three teams are in the triple screen. If Johnson wins, watch how they make sure there are enough people in Victory Lane to create "cheers" so it sounds as if the whole grandstands are cheering. Meantime, watch the background and no one is there in the stands.

Jonathan said...

Gina I hear you. Ill be honest I like JJ I do, but come on!!! COME ON! enough is enough already. the race has been awsome up to now, why??? jj wasnt in the mix but now he is. I will never give up on Nascar but ok here we go this will tell it all

Jonathan said...

wow I loved that finish line cam they had during crank it up. that was hot!

Anonymous said...

Crank it Up needs to go away. Finally get unbelievable racing for a lap or two and all we saw was a face cam of 130 lap down David Ragan and stupid speed shots. Terrible!

Anonymous said...

So much for the #88. One pole doesn't equal a "resurgance"
Same old story for JR

Scott W said...

What did say earlier...Jr will let you down.... I know Hendrick is having problems...but still.

Daly Planet Editor said...

They just have not figured out what video to use during the Crank it Up segment. Need to decide on that one soon.

Daly Planet Editor said...

That's for sure!

The Loose Wheel said...

Truex in 10th. anyone mention that yet?

Garry said...

Can anyone update me on Harvick? He was the points leader the last two weeks, but apparently he drives a car that doesn't have a 48 on the side.

PammH said...

According to the pylon at the track, the number 3 is running 9th!

Daly Planet Editor said...

The updates are few and far between.

bevo said...

Still no information on the tire situation?

Is there a new person in charge of the pit reporters this year?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Thanks Mike!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Bevo, the Goodyear guy, Stu Grant, is actually in the media center talking right now.

Why he has not been on camera is anyone's guess.

Scott W said...

Why would Fox report on an issue that concerns a sponsor, that might cost them ad $$$$'s

Garry said...

The last thing NASCAR wants is a tire war. That's probably why Stu Grant is not on camera. That would all but acknowledge a tire problem. But just like in years past, it's never Goodyear's fault. That's why I floated the Hoosier trial balloon half jokingly earlier.Arca runs Hoosier's on old Cup cars, so I don't see why it be a problem to entertain the idea of another manufacturer.

Haus14 said...

I know this is beating a dead horse, but the godaddy commercials are officially dumb.

GinaV24 said...

Harvick is running 24th, 1 lap down, but he's not the first car one lap down so no joy there

Daly Planet Editor said...
Bevo, the Goodyear guy, Stu Grant, is actually in the media center talking right now.

to be fair: a no-win situation. if fox has him in the booth to answer questions about tires or give information, fans might be complaining about having that happen during the coverage. if they don't have him, fans might complain about fox not covering pertinent information.
in addition, they MAY actually report on what he's said/is saying fairly soon -- or not.

twitter's already given me the information from goodyear in re: various teams and tire wear and it's the usual answers: aggressive set-ups and debris.

the tires themselves? "nothing to see here; just move on."

Haus14 said...

For some reason Fox and DW think it is a Hendrick issue even though Darian Grub told Tony after his problem that most every driver has had extrememe tire wear.

Anonymous said...

PRN reporting Goodyear is surprised by - some- of the tire problems today.

GinaV24 said...

Jonathan, my brother is a 48 fan so I have to put up with it and pretend I'm happy about him winning all the time. It makes for a sticky deal for us sometimes.

I don't really advocate wrecking people on purpose, but it would make me feel better if once in a while the 48 ran bad

Anonymous said...

Garry - Ann Marie the Sprint Girl kinda blew it on Race Hub this past week ... when she said that the 48 team was in & out of VL in less than 30 minutes and how they've got the routine down ... It's too old hat for them ... They've lost the thrill / excitement of being in Victory Lane ...

The Loose Wheel said...

Haus, sometimes crew chiefs lie....

lol

Daly Planet Editor said...

red, but you owe it to the viewers to let the guy who provides the tires say his piece IMHO.

Anonymous said...

If Hendrick-Haas Motorsports adds a third team, err, I mean Stewart-Haas, I see Kahne going there. Pretty soon, it'll be the Hendrick Cup, as no other team can compete. NASCAR needs to tear down those cars the right way, not the kid-glove way.

GinaV24 said...

and yet - LeTarte said they weren't running an aggressive camber for the car, so why the tire problems?

but as everyone has pointed out - it can't be a Goodyear problem. Everything is beautiful, no worries, be happy. Sheesh.

bevo said...

@red- It could very well not be a tire compound issue but a set up one. Race tires are not a simple thing to manufacture but not hearing anything one way or another from someone in charge is not good. It's pertinent information that we should here.

The Loose Wheel said...

welcome back red. sorry your boy has had a rough day. i warned some folks tho on friday.

red said...

jd, do we know that stu grant is at all interested in doing that? did fox ask him to be on air? i'm just curious as to whether they asked and he declined because he's a busy camper or if they are just ignoring this.

but for me: with so many tires going bad today, grant would be better served to be down in the pits, trying to get some answers to this mess.

that being said: fox should be using their pit reporters to get the information FROM grant and get it on the air as "stu grant, from goodyear, just told me XYZ." and if he had anything to say in the media center, fox should have had somebody there to report on what was said.

regardless, i agree that tv fans should have the same level of information as twitter users.

The Loose Wheel said...

Don't often hear me say this but: Need a caution! Kyle about to get lapped lol.

Montoya FUMING over lapped cars right now. None giving any room

Garry said...

tiamatsrevenge: Thank you for that info. That's pretty deep information to have. You wouldn't by chance be moonlighting in the sport? lol.

Anonymous said...

Where's the caution to benefit Sammy?? Oh, that's right ... He doesn't drive a car with a 8 / 48 / 24 on it ...

Why hasn't Jimmie had the problems that have hit the other Hendrick-Haas cars???

The Loose Wheel said...

there it is. Caution

Anonymous said...

RaceTalkRadio just tweeted "No tire issues? Is Goodyear using Baghdad Bob as their PR guy today?" priceless!

Anonymous said...

Caution for Hamlin...blew an engine.

Garry said...

I need a Petty caution! Stat! Oh, what's the use. The Petty's have been cast aside years ago, ever since the big engine fiasco.....

red said...

@david: can't agree w/your assesment in re: the 88 focusing on qualifying & not race trim (if, in fact, that's what your speculating?). whatever this issue is, it appears to have little to do with that set-up and more to do with the build itself (ie parts, hub problem, etc.)

regardless, i'm still watching the race. just wish goodyear could give us some answers before this is all over.

Anonymous said...

If there are any more green flag commercials after this stop I will never watch Fox again...

MikeC said...

Approaching 32-33 laps to go which would be 10%....Fox will be able to get away with taking the 10% to go commercial break with it being under caution.

bevo said...

Fox sure does love them some recaps don't they?

Garry said...

A recap? A recap? Why?

The Loose Wheel said...

Red, my argument with some people was that there was plenty of time for the 88 to lose the handle between Friday and Sunday. Which they did.

Just because they went fast in Q did not mean squat about them being good for the race. That was what I was warning people of.

GinaV24 said...

obviously from those camera shots of worn tires it's not just a HMS problem.

What happened to Hamlin?

red said...

hey jd? yellow flag, cars circling, no racing? THIS would have been the moment to rely information for goodyear, doncha think? they sorta tiptoed up to it but then, just as they could have gone into a bit more depth? "nothing to see here; move on."

The Loose Wheel said...

Hamlin cut down a left front

MikeC said...

I think Fox does recaps now, because they probably figure people are just now tuning in to see who wins....as they want to get those people caught up.

Not taking a commercial under yellow. That means they'll probably wait until there's 20 to 25 laps to go to take their last break.

GinaV24 said...

LOL I was wondering why we needed a recap, too? filler?

Anonymous said...

Does the media even have a clue that people literally HATE Jimmie?? Why the overkill?? Other than the fact that he's driving the Kobalt Tools car ????

The Loose Wheel said...

and THAT is why Chad Kanus is the BEST crew chief in NASCAR.

Garry said...

O.K. That's NOT the Petty Caution I was looking for....I'm loking for the one that BENEFITS the Petty cars. You know like a Hendrick Caution?

Daly Planet Editor said...

That was just weird.

Garry said...

Looking :Sp.

A Bristol ad ??

GinaV24 said...

thanks, David

Sally said...

Amazing that they try to sell Bristol as a 'high contact' track anymore. It definitely isn't that!

MikeC said...

I'm guessing this break is the last one. At least they're doing it under yellow and not green.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Why are they still promoting Bristol as it was before it was repaved? Time lapse?

Same issue that bit them last year. Promoted it as the coliseum and it turned out to be two lanes wide all the way around.

OSBORNK said...

We need 10 laps of green flag so we can have a green flag commercial.

Sally said...

These days Bristol has to work to sell out, just like any other track. It was a close call last August.

bevo said...

@MikeC- the problem with a recap is we have a tire issue that has not been addressed and a few laps left. Tires are going to be the main factor determining a winner. We don't need a recap at this point.

The Loose Wheel said...

I love the new Bristol

Garry said...

JD, I agree. A car , no, two cars, spin out in front of the flag ,in front of 40,000 people, in front of NASCAR Race Control, nad it takes almost a half a lap to throw the caution? Were they waiting to see the 48 pass a couple of cars first?

Sally said...

Interesting that they have decided to put more SAFER barrier up to try to get back what they lost in excitement. They will have to scrap the cahse to make it like the old days.

Anonymous said...

Johnson restarting 18th - I say he ends up 5th

red said...

@tiamatsrevenge i don't hate jimmie in any way. i think that team is riding a crest and doing an amazing job and (as much as it pains me to admit it sometimes!) i think knaus is a genius.

what i am weary of is the fawning adoration that cause this booth to pretty much disregard any other team, even if the 48 isn't in the front of the pack. this having to keep an eye on the 48, focus on their every move and minimize the work being done by other teams is what infuriates this fan.

@david; still, i can't agree. i don't think they lost thehandle on the car. i think the mechanical issues made it tough to do the right thing for that car.

Garry said...

I've read this script before. Johnson pits, comes out 18th, someone miraculously spins with 15 to go, and everyone pits, Johnson stays out wins the race, Knaus looks like a genious, and Johnson invents the cure for cancer. Ad infinum.

OSBORNK said...

They're pushing Bristol because it is not sold out as it traditionally is. They barely "sold out" last year and this year is much slower. There are billboards, TV spots, newspaper spots everywhere locally with promotions in an attempt to sell it out to keep the streak. According to a friend of a campground owner near the track, they are concerned about the soft ground in the campgrounds. We have had a lot of snow and rain since last year and the ground is soft for about 2' down. They are contracting with large wreckers to tow the RVs out. It is also supposed to rain for about a week before the race.

Daly Planet Editor said...

JPM is suddenly 3rd? What?

bevo said...

Jeez can't they cut back on the speed shots and show the racing? Brutal direction.

Sally said...

Daly Planet Editor said...

No Hendrick cars in top ten...

Daly Planet Editor said...

Nice caution flag timing to take care of that last commercial break.

red said...

@david: can't completely disagree with your position on set-up/tweaking during the race issue. but if this particular issue was, in fact, a hub, i don't know how that can be quickly diagnosed or corrected in the race. sounded to me that folks thought it was "just the tires going bad" as others had happening. plus, there shouldn't be ANY reason to assume a hub issue.

that being said? there's something wrong in a deep way in the 88 shop, of that i haven't a moment's doubt. the driver's preferences for set-up and lines on the track are well known and i don't agree with some who said he's never been a good driver and/or he "forgot" how to race. is it the wing versus the spoiler? the cot itself? probably some element of both.

it's just not . . . clicking, ya' know?

bevo said...

After all of this time why can't Larry Mc say Keselowski correctly?

The Loose Wheel said...

I don't think its a hub though red. I think its an excuse.

We'll see though. Jr can drive, he just struggles when that car isn't ideal which it has not been in over a year.

His ability to adapt is what I question.

I always had a suspicion Carl was a bit of a bully (the Kenseth incicdent), and this just confirmed it. Like running into the side of Junior's car after the checker...with his hand out of the window. Don't think he really cares if someone gets hurt. Disappointing.

Anonymous said...

Wow! If I've learned anything today, its to just watch the last 30 laps. Much less fustration.

Stokely said...

People, unwind your panties. It was an inappropriate thing to do, but if the car had stayed on the ground none of you would be worked into such an indignant lather. NASCAR will set the guy straight. If anybody has a right to be upset, it's the Penske fabricators. Incidentally, way to completely blow the ensuing pit stops, Fox.

MikeC said...

Usually NASCAR's actions are all bark and no bite...I'll be really surprised if they suspend him. They'll do like they did with Kurt Busch a few years ago.....probably take his points away from today, and then fine him another 150 points....and put on probation and be allowed to race at Bristol.

Amol said...

@red: if he really needed to get to the NASCAR hauler, why do the interview at all? NASCAR could have easily said to Carl to come to the hauler immediately without interviews, and that could have been passed off to the network.

GinaV24 said...

JD the answer about Bristol is what it always is with NASCAR - money. they know that people don't like the racing as much as on the old config with the old car - so the only way to SELL tickets is to lie.

bozo said...

stokely, that's the point, at atlanta at 195 mph you can't do that, you are taking a big risk of hurting someone, so the penalty should be applied as appropriate. it was beyone stupid.

The Loose Wheel said...

Im with Stokely. Brad getting hangtime was not part of the plan. Putting him in the fence was. There will be a long discussion which is probably already going on. It wasn't right but it happened.

At least he didn't say it was an accident.

Stokley, that's why it's uncool to intentionally wreck somebody--you don't know WHAT's going to happen, especially at 190 mph. What if someone in the grandstands had been hurt or killed?

Isn't this the time for them to point out 'how much safer' the COT is? totally ignoring how many bad wreck drivers walked away from with the old car?

I agree with you, David. I always thought Carl's "aww shucks" demeanor was always on the fake side.

Bevo, i never said it was right. I know what he was thinking though and he was NOT trying to kill him. That is being dramatic when it was as simple as this: you wrecked me, I'll wreck you.

It was not the right thing to do. But I am glad Carl did NOT backpedal in his interview.

Well, they tried to wreck and give us another GWC finish, but thank goodness they didn't!

Wow. Junior must have had a great lasp lap...finished 15th!

Good for Addington... he's going to prove that Shrub was not all the reason for success over there.

There are tracks that they call payback tracks. This is not one.

true, true, so very true, jd!

I meant to just shoot him - i didn't mean to kill him...you can choose the action, but you don't get to choose the consequences...you have to live with those.

Should have thought about things a little more Carl.

bozo said...

david, the point is not whether he was trying to kill him, but on this track he easily could have, that's the point...in law its called attempted manslaughter

@Haus14...excellent! Well said.

so who thought elder Busch would win before younger Busch in 2010??? anyone?

Stokely said...

bevo (and others), like I said, the move was inappropriate, particularly at such a hot track. My comments were directed at the disproportionate outrage. People are getting more upset than they ordinarily would because the wreck was spectacular, which is just a coincidence.

Nice to see Paul Menard have such a good run. The guy takes more derision than anybody else in the field, and in large measure it's undeserved.

@Soloman - NASCAR doesn't run nascar.com, Turner does.

@David- Doesn't matter. Haus nailed it. Not being dramatic when you flip someone over doing 195 mph.

chris meyers comes through with some good reporting on edwards' past issues...

Why did the FOX guys keep saying Brad wrecked Carl on lap 30?? When the video shows Carl came down ON Brad as Brad was hugging the yellow line?? Sad, just sad ...
