Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series In Richmond (7PM - FOX)

The weather is great, the gopher is gone and the lights are on. The Sprint Cup Series is running at night on a short track that lends itself to great racing.

Chris Myers leads the Emmy Award winning NASCAR on FOX team on the air at 7PM ET. Myers will be joined by Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Hammond from the Hollywood Hotel for a thirty minute pre-race show. The green flag flies at 7:44PM.

Mike Joy calls the action with Waltrip and Larry McReynolds from the TV booth. On pit road are Steve Byrnes, Matt Yocum, Krista Voda and Dick Berggren. Voda will not be at the truck race Sunday in Kansas. Instead, she will head back to Charlotte and host The Speed Report.

Richmond is a short track with lots of action. It's tough to go in-car live for fear of missing action on the track. The aerial shot of the facility is beautiful and it also works to show a fantastic perspective on restarts.

The RIR pit road is great for the famous triple-split effect used on the caution flag pitstops. With the incredible importance on pit road tonight, it will be important to clearly document the stops. ESPN made a big blunder on the final stops in the Nationwide Series race and never recovered.

It's going to be important for the TV team to keep the intensity level high. Unlike the relaxed style that FOX brought to Talladega, the short track in Richmond deserves excitement from the TV booth. That means Darrell Waltrip may have to scale back his extended comments and stories this week.

This post is going to serve to host your comments on the TV coverage of the Sprint Cup Series from Richmond, VA. To add your comment, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks for stopping by!

I've been MRN-ing.

As I've said before, what drives me crazy is the NASCAR 'monopoly'. I mean, if you own the radio, and control the TV content (to some extent, through fear) we are never going to get honesty. We don't want 'we love NASCAR' or 'we hate NASCAR', we want them to tell us the truth. And they seem unable/unwilling to do that.

Showtime?

Really?!

bevo said...

@Charlie- Eventually it gets so bad you just have to laugh about it and mock it :)

GinaV24 said...

must be all adults on here tonight -- the kids are out on Saturday night! LOL

@David - Fox showed the pre-announcement logo. It is the Showtime Southern 500, but I'm guessing it's going to be "Sprint Cup Racing from Darlington" on Fox.

Daly Planet Editor said...

On the best races, there is silence! LOL! It was pretty quiet last night.

AB did a good job despite Rusty. Andy and AB just talked around him.

GinaV24 said...

oh David, you know it, man! And so hoping that no one including Jeff screws up.

I'm done for the night. Too tired to keep up with this mess....it requires too much effort with the radio, the computer, and muted TV.

GinaV24 said...

oh boy, I won't have any fingernails left.

GinaV24 said...

Night, Sally. If my guy weren't in the lead, I'd go to bed too

The Loose Wheel said...

We're talking the TV network Showtime right? Not the rotisserie cooker? LOL

Gina, I can imagine. I was doing the same with Kyle...he is starting to get all Shruby on the radio...

Martin Vincent said...

Promos are more important than the fireball on the track?

The Loose Wheel said...

I have my Crown Royal in the freezer, going drinking after this. Ah, my twenties...the glory years lol.

Sorry, I thought we were self-promoting like our idols on FOX!

I can't say I'd be upset with any of the top 5 winning tonight.

GinaV24 said...

LOL -- David, shrubby or rowdy? Yeah and this is why I'm still hanging in there with this sport no matter how mad they make me or how bad the coverage is -- I've been a Jeff Gordon fan when he was racing winged sprint cars and have taking far too much heat for my choice to quit now.

but when he retires -- I am SO out of here. My heart won't be able to stand that much investment in another driver

Ok Just turned on TV for End of the race.

WHAT is that on fire on the track? I did not hear the booth SAY after the commrcial???

16 to go

bevo said...

Amazing we could go the whole race without any kind of context about it. Just a bunch of random camera shots and words thrown out into the ether.

GinaV24 said...

and why are they always so fascinated with Jeff Burton's wife?

GinaV24 said...

wow, did someone punt him?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Meteorite.

GinaV24 said...

kryptonite I think.

bevo said...

@JD- Funny!

The Loose Wheel said...

Gina...do you really want me to answer that?

Ouch, Sam took a shot there!

Kyle was being Shrub. He is going to make this interesting though, my boy against your Gina!!!

Kyle Busch: "I want clarification from NASCAR, are his restarts legal. First one he slowed from pace car speed, on that one he went faster than pace car speed. That can't be legal"

Rogers: "We'll ask after the race"

Wow, tires....I think this is a bad call actually.

Sophia said...

Seriously..a ball of FIRE? Did they ever say..turned off MRN cause it's ONE MINUTE behind my tv race show...and a mess of cautions

The Loose Wheel said...

Sophia, it was probably just a chunk of rubber that caught fire under a car. Maybe a spring rubber that burned up. Nothing major. =)

cdh said...

Time for the Kim-cam!

bevo said...

@Sophia- brake pad.

GinaV24 said...

David, well Gordon is complaining that they are laying back behind him on the restarts, so he doesn't think it's legal either.

its all perspective

Sophia said...

David

THANK YOU! I had no idea. WOulda been nice to have heard on the air...if MRN mentioned it I turned it off too soon.

If tv mentioned before the commercial, I did not have the tv back on until after it

Karen said...

Kyle is gonna take this.

Anonymous said...

MRN wasn't even watching what happened with Sammy ...

How about that idiot Joey wrecking him ... like he did at Chicagoland last year ...

MRN was too busy watching Jeff / Harvick / Kylie

Charlie said...

Look behind all the racing.

Glenn said...

Since we're a little OT.
Alex Hayden does his show from Goldsboro NC and Buddy Baker does his from Lake Norman,NC.
I'm sad to hear the thoughts about Sirius. IMHO it's still better than not having any type of station in a Major market, like Atlanta, to keep the fans that are left something to listen to.

GinaV24 said...

congrats, David, your guy did it. Man, Gordon can't buy a win these days.

Sophia said...

I turned back on the tv for this? GROUND HOG DAY?

See, Kyle be always cries his car is bad...THEN wins the race. The boy who cried wolf too many times.

Was hoping Jeff would break his losing streak. Sigh.

The Loose Wheel said...

Sophia, its just my best guess of what could have gotten hot enough to catch fire. Had to be rubber.

Man Kyle NEEDED those restarts. Jeff did a hell of a job hanging on for 2nd though!

Had Jeff in my fantasy team too lol.

That was interesting for sure

The Loose Wheel said...

Kyle thanked Rogers, tires won Kyle that race because it really wasn't that great late. He willed it to win.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Waltrip's closing comments were just a jumbled mess. Can he never be wrong about anything?

Sophia said...

Just odd all the phantom cautions..then a small ball of FLAME on the track for ALL to see and nary a peep of a mention of the specificities of burning object? :)

Charlie said...

9 minutes to bye bye. It will be a quick post race.

GinaV24 said...

JD, I started to listen to DW and then realized that I just couldn't because as always he's going to secondguess the drivers.

Ugh!

GinaV24 said...

but we have to get those last commercials in

Daly Planet Editor said...

We have the "Your Turn" post up for your race wrap-up comments before you head out.

Weird that we can have a fun and exciting NNS race on Friday night and then on Saturday we have another tired and confusing Cup race on TV. Same track.

The Loose Wheel said...

Gina, I'm happy for Kyle but to be honest even after my years as a Gordon-hater I feel horrible for him. Jeff should have 3, if not 4 wins this year if things played out just a wee bit different. Instead he sits winless but it is refreshing to really see him get back to form and once he breaks through I think the floodgates will open

The Loose Wheel said...

The sky could fall and Kevin Conway could win, and you know what? DW would have predicted it!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Really appreciate everyone stopping by. Truck race tomorrow!

Sophia said...

David

Congrats on YOUR driver winning & thanks for answering all my questions :)

I never liked Jeff until last couple of years..and was hoping he'd win tonight during end of race.

Sophia said...

Didn't Chris just say to WATCH SPEED for more post race coverage? Don't see it as of 11:06

Daly Planet Editor said...

FOX just announced that they would again go to SPEED and offer an extended post-race.

No warning, no promotion. Very strange.
