Live Blogging Camping World Trucks At Pocono (SPEED - 12:30PM ET)

The Camping World Truck Series is set to debut at Pocono Raceway. After qualifying on Saturday morning, the race coverage gets underway with the pre-race show at 12:30PM.

Krista Voda hosts The Setup with Ray Dunlap and Adam Alexander as the reporters. Rick Allen and Phil Parsons are going to be joined in the TV booth by Darrell Waltrip. Younger brother Michael is in Belgium racing sports cars with his business partner in MWR.

Pocono is a track that can get boring very fast if the field strings-out quickly. If the trucks stay bunched, it can be exciting. The TV challenge is not a big one as the track is so big and so wide the director is sometimes just searching for any interesting visuals.

As with most NASCAR races on TV, the crunch times are the pit stops and the final few laps. Pocono has a straight and wide pit road, so doing a triple split for caution flag stops and keeping a perspective for stops under green should be easy to do.

The final run off turn three to the finish is long and straight, so crunch time on the final lap is getting the field through turns two and three. This is going to be especially interesting if there has been a green/white/checkered finish set-up.

Waltrip is now being featured by SPEED and Foxsports.com long after the FOX portion of the TV coverage has been done. This newer profile has gotten mixed reviews from fans at TDP, so it should be interesting how DW fits into this team with Michael absent.

This post will serve to host your comments on the Camping World Truck Series coverage from Pocono on SPEED. To add your TV-related comment, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks for stopping by.

Truck time from Pocono!

Happy busy busy busy Race Day Saturday Planeteers :)

Looking forward to all the racin' today!

Lots of news going out today...happy about some unsure about others. But that's for another blog topic, we're here to go racin' boyz and gals :)

I'm very disappointed with Pocono's scheduling for the day. 50 laps / 125 miles for a big-3 Nascar race is unacceptably short IMO. They should run ARCA on Friday for 200 miles and the Trucks Saturday for 200/250.

I did think the Speed broadcast of the new Truck qualifying was very good though. After watching ESPN bungle the road course qualifying format in Nationwide the last 3 years I had my doubts but they handled it very well today IMO.

This has the potential to be an awful experience - Pocono, DW, so many Cup drivers and an uncharacteristically bad Truck broadcast recently. On the plus side though it's a Truck race and hopefully a return to previous outstanding race coverage by SPEED.

Let's keep our fingers crossed.

I agree with the qualifying comments. Great job. Looks like lots of folks did their homework.

Daly Planet Editor said...

You just knew Mikey was going to find a way into that broadcast!

bevo said...

Got to disagree, this is the perfect distance for a Pocono race. Wish Cup would chop their race in half for this track.

MikeC said...

Yes, I sort of figured as soon as Rick Allen started talking about Michael that they were setting it up to bring him on.

MikeC said...

Wouldn't mind seeing them develop that qualifying procedure at some of the other bigger tracks, like California, Michigan, Indy, etc. Not sure it would work at tracks like Daytona and Dega because of the draft factor.

Vicky D said...

Too much talk about the cup drivers in this truck race to suit me. Very disappointing it's like a NW race telecast and the tv interviews a cup guy first! Hope a full time truck series driver wins this thing. They are already saying that KK has won every truck race he has raced in. Oh my!

Daly Planet Editor said...

There is a live online feed of the 24 Hours of Spa that MW is driving in today. Looks pretty wild.

You can Google to find it.

MikeC said...

Yeah, I don't believe there's anything wrong with the distance. Gotta remember this is a 2.5 mile track.....it's not like they're running 30-second laps.

red said...

this guy ALWAYS does a great anthem: respectful, on key, great phrasing.

MikeC said...

I just calculated it up....based on final practice speeds, it would take 50 minutes to run this race caution-free. Figure 15 to 30 minutes for caution time.....we'll still have close to a 90-minute race. I believe the Bristol truck race is run in about the same amount of time.

Even the prayer has to have sponsor hits.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Thought that was pretty funny! Not the first time.

Sally said...

I wonder if the sponsors make 'donations' to the church to be included in the prayer? Wouldn't surprise me a bit.

bevo said...

With the vast improvements in engine design the long race doesn't prove anything. It just leads to long, boring stretches of racing. Shorten it up and get more action and intensity.

Sally said...

Rats! I thought we might get thru the pre race without hearing 'roval'.

Anonymous said...

@Sally--no ma'am especially with DW there he loves that term

@red--I agree I love Mr. Luis! I miss that nice trooper we use to always get at Pokeynose :(

Looking forward to Bobby Jr. racing again I've missed him :(

Anonymous said...

Awesome! I just love when DW does boogity, boogity, boogity! Thanks, SPEED.

bevo said...

No need for a caution there

Sally said...

Thank goodness I remembered to mute the TV at the green flag!

bevo said...

Good job switching cameras on the spin to see action coming at us instead of focusing on the smoke behind it.

Vicky D said...

Really like Mr. Luis singing the anthem.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Pretty good so far!

PammH said...

muted the TV rite after the Set-UP. Listening on Sirius. The DW that said on the 3 Wide chat that he hated the Chase is NOT the one that shows up to call races. Too bad..

longtimeracefan said...

Lap 14 and they are already spread out pretty good.

Speed is doing a run down of the top ten cars with tight one-car and in-car shots.

Boring.

Glad this is only a 50 lapper.

bevo said...

Nice getting info from pit reporters during that stretch. DW has toned it down so far.

Daly Planet Editor said...

That was the risk, that this would be a flop because they got strung out and with no caution there would be no passing.

Started good, just needs some more racing inside the pack.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Wonder what happened there?

Got the look of a Nationwide Series race.

Vicky D said...

I realize the cup guys are leading but we need to know who is running like in 16th place.

Patrick said...

Got the look of a Nationwide Series race.

Except this race's qualifying was televised. Nationwide FAIL!

longtimeracefan said...

That 3 truck needs to get up front now.

MikeC said...

SPEED is starting to tape-delay this race to kill time. MRN is doing live green flag action right now as SPEED is still in caution mode.

longtimeracefan said...

Looks like a pretty good crowd in the stands for today's races. Good to see all those campers in the infield. Has anyone ever been there, done that? Looks like a good time.

Daly Planet Editor said...

They have been doing it like the quals. Showing every lap.

I like it!

Vicky D said...

I guess all of us here right now didn't get an invitation to the wedding either!

longtimeracefan said...

Wonder if Waltrip's daughter gets residuals for that Aaron's commercial.

Daly Planet Editor said...

OK, no spoilers folks! We are just going to let it play out on TV.

Sally said...

Just listened to DW on the '3 Wide'. I wonder if he will get fined uner 12-2-A for 'actions detrimental...' Amazing the he just recently started listening to fans about hating the chase. A bit 2 faced, isn't he?

longtimeracefan said...

Great overhead shot on that restart.

bevo said...

@Sally- Just give DW a couple of days and his opinion will change. He just blabs away without ever thinking about anything. Just depends on which way the wind blows.

Sally said...

So, is Autsin Dillon on Denny's 'revenge-o-meter' now?

bevo said...

Great replays by SPEED on the wreck

Daly Planet Editor said...

I think SPEED is making the best of this one.

Vicky D said...

Speed is doing a good job of the broadcast! Hope DS finishes in the top 10.

RJ_Number8 said...

At this track, smart thinking with the overhead blimp camera for restarts. Hope ESPN uses it as well.

I think DW has made some big mistakes in his analysis, but Rick and Phil keep saving him (as in with his description of what happened between the #30 and #3).

DW said something a big ago about Cup drivers "helping each other out" at these races. Anyone have any idea what the hack is he talking about? I thought drivers sign up for races to WIN.

No complaints from me on this coverage.

bevo said...

Love the way Rick calls it

Daly Planet Editor said...

Guess that is more than NASCAR hoped for when they added it to the schedule this season.

longtimeracefan said...

Good coverage by Speed. Nice win for Sadler.

Anonymous said...

That is exactly how the end of EVERY race should be shot. Every car crosses the finish line on screen with graphics to identify each driver by name and number. What could possibly be more important to televise than THE FINISH? Congratulations to everyone in production for doing the checkered flag show in the only correct fashion. Thank you, SPEEDTV, thank you.

Charlie said...

Good for Elliot. Glad to see him win.

GinaV24 said...

@Sally -- LOL, I saw that last night and said the same thing! All of a sudden DW and Larry Mac have "discovered" that a lot of fans don't like the chase.

Gee golly wow! Considering that last year Larry Mac ran with his tail tucked between his legs after NASCAR called him on the carpet for his interview with Dustin Long, I'm surprised he had the guts to actually say anything that NASCAR might construe as "negative".

Two faced is right!

Sally said...

Good coverage bySpeed...even DW was toned down and not so offensive today. Not too many in car cameras, good use of the blimp camera. Wish they could have talked a bit more about 'the rest' of the field, but all in all a good race.

Boy, that was short!

once speed began to time-shiftt, i mostly stayed away from twitter so i could actually WATCH a race. i thought the speed team did a strong job with solid overhead camera shots, lots of headlights and few taillights and generally good cameras.

the booth was fine. i even thought that dw's observations early on about the tunnel turn and how to enter and exit it were interesting and intelligent.

this is one of those times when we, as fans, can complain that we didn't get to see most of it live OR we can say "Thanks for showing us every single lap." we're so accustomed to having to be on twitter or the radio or some other alternative source for hearing and reading a race that we may have forgotten how to just watch it.

i chose to watch and to the speed team, i say "Thanks for showing me every single lap in such a good broadcast!"

GinaV24 said...

I just caught the end of the race, that was a nice way to broadcast the finish! Can someone please tell ESPN & Fox?

Good driver interviews at the end, it was nice to see the truck regulars up front and interviewed

Lisa Hogan said...

I thought that SPEED did a good job covering this race.

Great to see Sadler win.

I liked DW in the booth a lot more than Mikey. Mikey's jabber jabber really gets to me.

Daly Planet Editor said...

See everyone for trucks tonight at 7PM. Thanks for stopping by.

FABULOUS CAMERA work.

great shot of the finish line, too.

Thank you SPEED!

adamtw1010 said...

One of the best races this year, both with the racing and the TV broadcasting. I liked this short distance-maybe there should be a Pocono 500 and a Pocono Sprint Race? Just a thought.

Also liked the new qualifying format. Only watched it because NASCAR Fan Council informed me on Thursday they'd be surveying me over it, but it worked out great! Perhaps it will be implemented at other tracks in other series?

Patrick said...

See everyone for trucks tonight

Of course, you mean the Nationwide race. We just finished with the trucks.

The broadcast was way above average. So, I won't complain. Not sure how I feel about the time-shifting, but since there isn't any information/data available online, this works. I, too, avoided Twitter, so the finish wasn't spoiled. I immediately went the NASCAR.com to prepare for the NW Q and was surprised to see the Sadler winning as the headline. So, I'm glad I didn't go there any sooner.

Messy start to the ARCA race, just like the trucks with 1st lap caution. I wonder if DW will run out of steam with this back-to-back broadcast. I'm expecting it.

I watched upstairs with my neighbor, so no blog, twitter or radio. I really enjoyed the race And Ricks call of it. I realized what the heck makes those Cup races at Pocono so boring - they are way too long. Shorten them up!
Fox & ESPN need to watch the last GWC & see the field cross the finish line!

Thanks SPEED nice job!

Richard in N.C. said...

The half or so of truck race I saw was pretty good I thought, in spite of the king of S&P'ers. The big difference I noted versus Nationwide was no teams backed by Cup teams - sort of the way Busch was years ago.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Sorry guys, of course I meant Nationwide Series from Iowa.

I have a lot going on right now!
