Live Blogging Nationwide Series From Daytona (7:30PM ET ESPN)

It's rainy in Daytona, but the Nationwide Series is scheduled to run shortly after 8PM.

Nicole Briscoe is in the Infield Pit Studio with Dale Jarrett and Brad Daugherty. These three might see some serious on-air time if the weather situation continues.

Supporting the efforts on pit road are Dr. Jerry Punch, Dave Burns, Shannon Spake and Mike Massaro. It will be Allen Bestwick, Jarrett and Andy Petree in the TV booth once things get rolling.

ESPN is looking for a barn burner tonight. Dale Earnhardt Jr. is in the #3 vintage Wrangler car and there are a ton of Sprint Cup Series drivers crossing-over to race.

The network is ready to begin Sprint Cup Series coverage in just a couple of weeks with this entire TV team. This race will be a great dress rehearsal for The Brickyard.

This post will host your comments on the ESPN coverage of the Nationwide Series from Daytona. To add your comment, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting.

Thanks for taking the time out of your holiday weekend to stop by The Daly Planet.

Well JD, we can't even get ESPN on DirecTV tonight, it's pouring here in Houston (well all week) and we've got satellite fade. Hope the race goes on though.

Anonymous said...

Happy Race Night Planeteers :)

We're getting some nice well needed rain here in DFW :)

It'll be interesting to see who is left tonight from what I see 20ish teams still planning to S&P. Hope a good safe race is had for all :) <3

Daly Planet Editor said...

Hey all! Hear it's still wet.

Vicky, Houston has rain fade like no other city I have ever lived in!

MikeC said...

I loved that opening! Sent chills!

Ben in NC said...

That was the best opening for any sport on ant network that I have seen in years. Gonna be a fun one tonight sports fans...

Anonymous said...

agree Mike! That was awesome <3 Daytona...let's ride!

Anonymous said...

Hi all - Looks dry for now at the track. Its so nice NNS has no vuvuzelas!

Dave in OKC said...

Gymmie - Your well-needed rain will be upon us here shortly.

Couldn't help but notice that some of the usual S&P contingent isn't here tonight. Do we have a chance at seeing a mostly full field for most of the race?

The Loose Wheel said...

Negative, several will start and park. I expect 49, 28, 43, 89 without any doubt. There are about 7 or 8 more what if's.

MV feel free to help me out!

Daly Planet Editor said...

This telecast is sizzling so far!

Dave in OKC said...

David, I was holding out a little hope that if a team sprung for the R&D on the new car, they could run a few extra laps. Oh well.

Anonymous said...

Glad to share Dave :)

<3 the Mustang! Such a purdy car :)

Dave said...

This is a milestone night for this series. So far, ESPN is up to the task!

Martin Vincent said...

@David - I don't know. Any other race, I could think of a few teams that are secure enough in the top-30 that they could park early to save their "new" car for later in the season.

However, a lot of teams that could park either have new sponsors or have a driver behind the wheel that I don't think is there to S&P.

Even the #28 has a few new sponsors on the car, so it may go the distance, or at least try to.

The Loose Wheel said...

Dave, you'd like to think that but with the history of Daytona, some teams only have one single car here and they have to get to Michigan in 5 or 6 weeks. Can't afford to trash a car right now if your one of them. Steve Wallace has said they are in their Michigan car now since they crashed yesterday.

brad said...

It's not very often I enjoy a prerace show anymore but this has been darn good!

Anonymous said...

I really like Nicole & Dale on the pre race tonight.

PammH said...

And as usual, Brad brings nothing to the table...:(

brad said...

The Nascar move of the year award goes to the executives at ESPN for moving Jerry Punch back where he belongs. Still the best in the business on pit road!

The Loose Wheel said...

We may luck out though Dave, aside from the 49 and 43 as well as the 73 and 89 the others may actually try to run. 27, 28 are questionable. 04 and 01 should try to run. 05 has sponsor, they should run as well as 07.

10 should run but we'll see. Morgan barely made it to Daytona in time. Got a rare break from the powers that be to be able to attempt.

But, I expect to see some cars fall off the draft early on purpose to avoid getting caught up in a wreck. 28 has stated this is their only car so they are being conservative. Only ran 2 laps all weekend and had issues in tech. Not admitting they are S&P so we'll see.

Solid pre-race so far.

My sleeper is Shelby Howard guys. He was fast in Talladega and is fast so far this weekend.

Dave in OKC said...

Hang in there, PammH. Two weeks to Ricky Craven.

Vicky D said...

JD, Mike put ESPN on non-HD so it doesn't fade as much. Seems like we'll be able to watch the race. Hope our David Starr stays out the whole race too.

brad said...

Is it just me or does it seem like the content is much better during the shorter prerace shows? It seems that they just use quality pieces rather than using fluff to fill the time. All prerace shows need to be 30 minutes or less!

Dave in OKC said...

Marty Smith did a great job with the Earnhardt piece. I just wish ESPN hadn't already run it 27 times this week.

Anonymous said...

@Brad--yes it does seem that way. When they have less time they fill it with CONTENT when they have more time they stretch it out to what ends up being a hot mess of very little content and lots of fluff :(

Anonymous said...

Missed most of that segment with AB and the Dodge folks. Penske has a long history in designing its own chassis though in other motorsports ventures.

Anonymous said...

Shalom and amen . . . memories of the Rev. Hal Marchman

PammH said...

Wow, I have my Sirius radio on, but no sound. They run the line-up & it's giving me chills to the the number 3 in the 3 spot...

Vicky D said...

Good anthem and start your engines. Have a safe race everyone! Go Parker & David!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Man, these guys are hitting out of the park tonight.

Hope the race is good on the track.

Anonymous said...

3 chances at a green flag start?!?!? Why why why is he even there ???

The Loose Wheel said...

Brad D needs to just be an owner period.

MW55 too.

Don't forget about the free scanners tonight on NASCAR.com

longtimeracefan said...

Shalom and amen indeed!

Gentlemen start your engines.

Let's get it on.

Go #3, please.

Martin Vincent said...

That command excluded Jennifer Jo Cobb.

Patrick said...

David, you're forgetting Phil Parsons, too.

Sally said...

They really need to give up on this in car reporter thing. It seldom works right.

The Loose Wheel said...

Phil just needs to stop being an owner LOL

Patrick said...

What's the over/under on start-n-parks. Many teams don't have another new car.

Sally said...

I don't get why Chevy is so stupid about not using the Camaro for racing.

Anonymous said...

NO rain here in the Puget Sound ... Ha Ha Ha

brad said...

Thanks JD. My son just saw that you tweeted 2 of my comments from here. He thought that was the coolest thing. Granted he's only 13 but I will take what I can get.

The Loose Wheel said...

i can understand from a competitive aspect why Chevy has not run the Camaro. Logically you'd figure with that indent the Dodge and Mustang would be horrible, the Camaro has a similar design so why run it? Plus GM is not willing to badge the Camaro race car with a b-pillar since the street version does not have one.

The Loose Wheel said...

I'm saying 5 start and parks for over/under

Dave in OKC said...

@Sally - I don't get it, either. But it will be intersting to see if the old "win on Sunday, sell on Monday" mantra comes back into play for the Mustang and Challenger.

The Loose Wheel said...

LOL @ Brad Coleman behind Punch

Anonymous said...

And they're (KRKO-AM) tape delaying the Coke Zero 400 and airing it Sunday at 9am ...

What good does it do to tape delay an auto race on radio ?!?!?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Brad, ESPN loves it when we pass comments along like that.

Thanks for taking the time to offer them.

brad said...

WOW! A Days of Thunder reference by someone that was in the movie. Go Jerry!!

Patrick said...

I'm guessing 12 S&Ps. We have at least 5 or 6 with the old car.

Anonymous said...

Those cars just looked dang good on that wide shot! These cots look like racecars. Nice

Anonymous said...

What do Mike Joy and Allen Bestwick have in common? Among other things . . .. they always mention when people hail from New England, or elsewhere in Modified country

Patrick said...

Junior tried like hell to lead lap 3 in the 3

The Loose Wheel said...

No plates on these cars, only the tapered spacer. Should make for a good racey race. Much like Trucks are here.

Bestwick doing an excellent job thus far. Good camera work as well

Sally said...

Nice to see someone actually drafting with Junior. Hasn't happened as much as it used to.

Sally said...

Although, remembering Kyle during practice, I'm not sure I'd want to be racing around him.

The Loose Wheel said...

team cars. not what baker curb wanted to see there.

Patrick said...

Kez pipped Jr at the line on lap 6 per the camera. Kez has led all laps so far.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Need a better replay for sure!

Martin Vincent said...

@David - Team cars only in NASCAR's eyes. The #27 is run by Jennifer's Truck team and the #43 is a Chevrolet, so the owner points were probably "rented" by another team (possibly Shepherd who also ran Chapman in the last race).

Anonymous said...

Yet another wreck that they miss ... cause they were watching JuneBug ...

Anonymous said...

Hate that for Jen :( She's so nice and chats with us on Twitter :)

longtimeracefan said...

Too bad for Jennifer Jo, bad Jalapenos!

The Loose Wheel said...

still not what they wanted to see in owners points lol.

Wow they used a full screen tech center under caution! Great call!

The Loose Wheel said...

49 off

Martin Vincent said...

@Gymmie - Jennifer might run Chicagoland too as the #27 team, her Truck team has been preparing an "old-style" car for her in addition to this "new" car. Have you checked the pictures on her crew chief's page?

The Loose Wheel said...

Light FUN booth. For real, not the make believe FOX one...

Darcie said...

I'm surprised that the seats are as empty as they are, and that Earnhardt Nation didn't show up in droves for this historic drive. What does that say about the state of Nascar in general?

Patrick said...

49 back in the race.
56 appears to be off now.

The Loose Wheel said...

Major kudos to Jennifer for her honesty. Very refreshing

The Loose Wheel said...

FYI Daytona Track pres said the superstretch is CLOSED for this weekend. Only sold tickets on front stretch

Martin Vincent said...

Good to see Jennifer's OK, but sad to hear her team might not be able to run the other 3 COT races she had planned.

alex said...

So if no one has driven behind the 27 car, is that because she's always in the back?

Anonymous said...

@Martin--yes I have seen the pictures! I hate that too for her :(. Wish I had money to help her she tries so hard! That's a fan car I'd get behind!

Anonymous said...

Thanks ESPN,for the driver interviews from outside the medical center.

The Loose Wheel said...

Teams ran limited laps due to financial limitations so there were some people that ran totally in the dark. Cobb was one of them sadly.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Did Mr. Jesus just start and park?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Super of ESPN to interview Cobb and Champman.

The Loose Wheel said...

Yeah JD, looks that way.

Dave in OKC said...

Although they may neither finish well nor get much TV time, it's cool to see Sacks and Schrader in this event, bridging the gap between old and new.

Anonymous said...

Will someone tell Shannon to MOVE away from where she is??

There's all kinds of background noise that's annoying!!!

brad said...

Nice solid coverage so far. hope it stays that way all night!

Anonymous said...

Yes JD it seems Mr. Jesus did indeed S&P :(

Yes it was very nice of them to talk to Jenn and Johnny :(

The Loose Wheel said...

Wow, impressive by the Penske teammates!

Close call for Justin and a great catch by ESPN!!! Impressive work all the way around by TV and the drivers!!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Cobb is on Twitter and has a big Facebook fan page.

She is a business person and really works a hard deal.

Wonder when she will show up on SPEED's "Race Hub?"

Daly Planet Editor said...

Hey, this is actually......FUN!

Sally said...

Maybe part of the fun is that with the new car, no one knows what to expect....so, anyone really CAN win the race tonight. Unusual uncertainly, and not just waiting for the 'Big One'?

Anonymous said...

OK this is killing us here ( Ford retirees) that Charger looks really good. Mustang looks good too. But that Charger...

longtimeracefan said...

Big time fun indeed. It's an all out race. Whoo hoo!

longtimeracefan said...

Great coverage, cool images, this is what it's supposed to be like. Thanks ESPN

The Loose Wheel said...

Challenger =) No Chargers in this race

Martin Vincent said...

@Jojaye - Challenger

Martin Vincent said...

McClure was a moving chicane the first time he got lapped, wondering if he's going to be as dangerous to pass this time around.

Dave in OKC said...

We're about halfway, with only 2 S&Ps?

brad said...

This is what Nascar, ESPN and the Nationwide Series needed after a few lackluster events. This has been great so far!

Anonymous said...

Thanks guys Hubby corrected me the minute he saw it. Hangs head blushing.

PammH said...

I wish I could stay up for all of this. Furpal died this wk & I haven't been getting alot of sleep. Taping the race, but luv listening to jr on trackpass! And the broadcast has been excellent also...will finish it in the morn.

Anonymous said...

They've missed the last two leader changes ...

Go to commercial and it's Bowyer / Harvick ... come back and it's Kyle / Joey .... talk about & show Carl ... then it's Gator / Brad ...

RWar24 said...

Can't get a report from pit road to confirm if there's a specific reason Edwards dropped to the back?

Martin Vincent said...

Looks like Bob Pockrass' prediction of 20+ S&P cars never came true. Wonder where he got that impression.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Just got a tweet from Nicole Briscoe in ESPN's infield studio.

She and Brad are digging the racing just like us.

Man, she has come a long way from the freaking SPEED Report with Barbie and Ken!!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Jo, we're Ford peeps! LOL!

Dave in OKC said...

I can't wait to see these cars on a short track! If NASCAR was looking for something to spice this series up, mission accomplished.

Martin Vincent said...

Since when is the Impala a "pony car"?... Come on, Brad, get your head out of your...

NorCalFan said...

@RWar24 - was listening to Carl and he said it was too crazy up front with a crash due any minute so he decided to play it safe for awhile. Said he'd be up front at the end.

RWar24 said...

I love the front ends on these cars. It's amazing how not having the splitter braces can really improve the overal look.

The Loose Wheel said...

Thanks Gluck!

Kyle's radio said radar clear to the end

Sally said...

It's a thrill just to be able to tell the difference between the cars from a distance.

Patrick said...

I agree, RWar24
JD, I used to not like Gluck, but he's grown on me. Love that kind of talk from him.

I predict the next caution will be because of Bayne. He's sooo loose and is about to wreck coming off 4 every time.

Martin Vincent said...

@Patrick - Logano has been really loose quite a few times too.

Anonymous said...

@RWar24 - they do look much better - shame the Cup cars don't look this good!

adamtw1010 said...

Got a little white noise or some sorta hum on my DISH Network System a little while ago, but it's gone now. Good race so far, caution should be comin' up, it usually happens.

Patrick said...

talk of debris on the officials radio.

The Loose Wheel said...

caution out for debris

sbaker17 said...

All this fun!!
And NO Rusty

Patrick said...

caution. debris backstretch 3/4 down on the yellow line.

Martin Vincent said...

Scaks was 12th before the caution,... team rolled a tire across pit road.

Dave in OKC said...

Glad they showd the debris - if only for a moment.

Anonymous said...

Just curious with Rusty off tonight, have they ever put Tim Brewer in the pit studio?

Anonymous said...

Mrs Briscoe -

It's Hal - luh - pain - yo

Patrick said...

anon @ 9:34,

don't even joke about that. there's less opportunity to show off the manicure, anyway.

Dave in OKC said...

I'm sorry, but I cant shake the image of Jeff Dunham's Jalapeno-On-A-Stick.

Charlie said...

Be hard to put 'recorded earlier' tim brewer in the pit studio. ha ha

Daly Planet Editor said...

Man, this has been fun. Hope they keep it clean and not make it a wreckfest.

Patrick said...

you and me both OKC Dave

The Loose Wheel said...

The Harvick connection to the 3 is worth repeating as well.

Dave in OKC said...

Patrick- If we end up with more than one GWC, then keel me! :)

The Loose Wheel said...

Rare misstep by Bestwick, said Allgaier and Keselowski started on the front row.

Killing the program's momentum.

There have been almost no in-cars used in this race.

We have been talking about that since the start.

Thanks for joining us...

Both JR Motorsports cars running 11,12. Guess Sacks remembers how to do restrictor plate tracks. Good for him.

Yeah can't say I will make a huge effort to catch the IRL series until they get the new engine and car.

side by side is nice but its also the 4th.

tomorrow night will work for me.

Great...this is just LOVELY.

I still hate the style of bumper cam they use. I despise these new onboards with a passion

Martin Vincent said...

@brad - Don't forget Keselowski, he's going to be a factor.

Dave in OKC said...

Kyle overrides his crew chief. Should be interesting post-race if it doesn't pay off.

OK. GWC. No team mates or manufacturer ties in the front 2 rows. this could get dicey! Hope every body make the checkered unhurt.

I keep a small blog, same design I've always had there, & have to log in CONSTANTLY lately there, too, in recent weeks. Behind the scenes tweak at Blogspot. Not JD's new design. :)

Still too many bumper cams for me in 15 minutes. Shame about a real caution. GWC could be serious mileage issue. Glad they got the race in & rain stayed away!
Love Jrs car paint scheme. We need more EASY to read, nice schemes...

What a great night for Allen Bestwick to be in the booth. He was there for that memorable call in the 2001 Pepsi 400 when Dale Jr. won, and he had another memorable call tonight at Daytona! Nice job AB!

Suckered again said...

The script was written and the winner was determined when the announcement was made that Jr. was going to drive the #3 one last time. Professional wrestling is less predictable.

I agree, Jerry Punch should have done the interview.

FABULOUS T SHIRT!!

Anonymous said...

@Suckered again

Are you serious right now?

brad said...

I like Dave but that was a moment for Dr. Punch. The RC interview should be good.

The Loose Wheel said...

I won't call it a fix, but man the fact that no one really made a serious move there the entire last 30 laps was pretty bad. Pretty good race until that next to last caution. Kyle even called it on his radio, caution waved right after he was passed while ESPN was at commercial.

Toyota is getting a raw deal on the engine rule though because the Chevy's have the R07 and should be running the same spacer as Toyota.

Its cool for Jr, just wish we weren't robbed of that killer run Keselowski had coming!

Solid job most of the night by ESPN, commercials were really crammed in there but other than that cant complain

Kenn Fong said...

Agree with you, Suckered Again. I wanted Jr. to win. But if they're going to fix a race for him, they ought to be less obvious. To have him win at Daytona after his Daddy got killed, then he wins again in the 3 in memory of his Daddy... Geez.

Kenn

Sophia said...

I agree Jerry Punch DESERVED the Jr interview & would've done a better job. I hope this race helped heal some wounds but I can see while some are skeptical of the outcome..and I'm a Jr fan! :)

Daly Planet Editor said...

How in heaven's name do you fix a race like that?

This I have to hear....

Anonymous said...

You can't fix races at Daytona sheesh. People just don't know a good driver when they see one. Just like NASCAR fixed the races when Jeff Gordon won his 4 championships eh?

Im sure all the competitors tonight said "Yeah lets let the #3 car win cause we feel bad" COME ON!

Anyways.....good broadcast by ESPN. Commercials kinda backloaded at the end there.

Dave in OKC said...

It will be very interesting to see how tonight carries over to the Cup side for Junior.

brad said...

For the love of everything sacred. I know there are haters out there but fixed races? really???

Anonymous said...

the only fix is what was rumored after his win right after his dad's death..that his engine was allowed extra horsepower.. not sure in this case..but that other win he could pass people without anyones help..

The Loose Wheel said...

Plate races are actually easy to "fix" because it's as simple as putting a bigger plate under the hood.

Not saying that's what happened but I am saying if you were going to that is how to do it.

Patrick said...

Don't blame NASCAR for the "fix". Blame Joey for not having the attachments to pass. Experience will teach him that you got to stick your neck out there if you want to pass anyone at Daytona.

Anonymous said...

Fixed?!? These guys would slam their mother into a wall to win a race to the bathroom!
Probably believe in black helicopters too

Daly Planet Editor said...

David,

Did you really just say that?

Anonymous said...

Always conspiracy theorists out there. Afriad to face the facts.

Anonymous said...

David,

Plates aren't run on the Nationwide cars remember ;)

The Loose Wheel said...

JD, again not saying it is what happened here tonight but if your going to do it thats exactly how. Hell you don't even have to make the plate bigger just having someone hold it in their hands with some rubbing compound around the edges is an advantage right there. Thus why teams don't put their own plates on anymore.

I think it was a legit win tonight I was just playing the devil's advocate card.

Joey flat didnt take a chance and gave Jr that win. Then Harvick pushed him for 25 laps.

Id be curious if that is the R07 or SB2

brad said...

I suppose they must have paid off Harvick to spin his tires and then say so in an interview to make it look good right?? This is insane. What does anybody have to gain by making sure Jr wins a nationwide race? Don't you think they might break that long dry spell in the cup series. Unbelievable.
